  • Should there be a sugar tax on soft drinks? Would this reduce childhood obesity? That's what Jamie Oliver argues. He made the case before the Commons Health Select Committee on Monday - and he's been speaking to Evan Davis.

      +Ol Beef I absolutely agree with you why do we British allow our government and these sxxxbags to follow there rhetoric look if I do not want coca cola I do not buy it ,and if I want to buy a massive cream cake I want to enjoy the bloody thing sugar ,fresh cream the lot the way cooking used to be tasty and nice ,our food and ingredients taste like shite nowadays, government cut backs on salt,sugar,you can't eat this you can eat that ,nearly all pubs and clubs out of business ,alcohol, smoking,meat,eggs,milk etc etc etc, look with all of these governments labour and conservative shysters that have ran our country .there is no bloody work,no industry .in Sunderland we had,loads of department stores ,industry's, glassmakers,breweries, meat industry's metal forges industry, paper mills ,catalogue company's the tailoring industry's, shops all the way down the high street of the town and surrounding areas,fish shops, butcher shops,fruit and veg shops,wet fish shops,iron mongers,toy shops etc etc etc .and with our governments and there kissy kissy bed pals all with there snout in the trough of greed, corruption and being best pals with the corrupt bed pals the big boys have it all, the tesco,asda,sainsburys,Morrison's,etc etc they dictate the market with the direction from america be it what we eat or drink, and who we should bomb in lying illegal wars,irac,Libya,Syria,etc etc absolutely destroying there country's and killing thousands upon thousands of innocents and there leaders and causing all of these mass and flood of these homeless refugees driven from there homelands .and these are dictating to you and me through there cronies what is best for you and me .look you can't tell your mother or father how to cook as everybody used to proper home made cooking and it was proper food and kids where fed thoroughly and they ran about and exercised it off proper natural living ,now with these government shysters nowt tastes good. kids are encouraged to be fed pizzas,frozen food in fact crap,government are to blame, schools can't learn children esp girls preparations to be a housewife and mother to her children and now it takes two to be in work to afford rent on your house esp on these zero hour contracts .our governments past and present are to blame for the state of our country, what our forefathers and mother's built on sweat and sheer hard back braking work and struggle ,for these government (labour and conservative ), pigs in the trough of greed and corruption and fraud that has ruined our beautiful country ,and that includes the royal family's, and the church of england ,they can all piss off to another country when the going gets tough and dangerous to the ordinary British citizen .they have made little less than a absolute doss hole and betrayed all of its English inhabitants .and are determined to control you and me in what we eat ,or drink ,and even smoke or watch on the TV

      But what he is advocating is a tax that is designed to be punitive and change behavior. I am happy for large and clear labels saying the effect and related death as long they presented facts, so we could understand the decision we where making. We pay tax on income, NI and VAT to pay for the NHS to heal us when we have sports injuries, are giving birth and for the poor diet choices we make.
      All this will do is effect the poor who drink more of these compared to the average. It is like smoking people here in Hull; people still smoke loads as they have made that decision and hurts them the most when the tax goes up due to the large amount of poverty here. The same would happen with that kind of tax on sugar.

    • @maccbarney
      @maccbarney 8 років тому

      +Jac77794 it is when the taxpayer has to pay £8 billion a year to treat obesity, £47 billion if you include all the measures aimed at preventing it. I agree with you but whilst we still have the NHS they have to do something.

    • @Jac77794
      @Jac77794 8 років тому

      But sugar is not the only cause of obesity and there is an expectation to exercise the excess calories gained from food. Without forgetting that bread, butter, meat are all highly caloric. Are we gonna have to tax all food that isn't salad? It seems a ridiculous route.
      Alcohol and smoking are large direct factors for disease. Food is indirect and about overall diet and exercise.
      Basically their are more causes to obesity than sugar. The rich are statistically less obese so obviously cost of sugar is not an issue.

    • @maccbarney
      @maccbarney 8 років тому

      I agree over consumption is an issue but all of those food you mentioned were eaten 100 years ago and there was minimal cases of type II diabetes - and virtually zero in children. Most research these days actually suggest fats are good for you. Sugar has also been found to be highly addictive giving you withdrawal symptoms etc. The fact Coke are the main sponsors of many sporting events like the olympics, rugby/ football world cup sends the wrong message. They also fund their own research to confuse consumers. At least with a chocolate you know its a treat but people are drinking 3 cokes a day regularly just because they are thirsty - which is something like 36 teaspoons of sugar and surely you must agree that is not healthy.

      Not necessarily your diet but many people don't know what's bad for them. If people know what's bad for them, they should be sensible enough to not buy that many soft drinks.

    Blah Blah Blah. Fizzy drinks have been around for at least 120 years and I don't recall seeing pix of fat kids pre the 1980's. Millions of kids grew up in my era (early 60's & late 70's) and drank gallons of the stuff but, we were not obese - we also ate tonnes of chocolate and sack loads of crisps! So what has changed? It's nothing to do with the drinks...its to do with levels of physical activity and processed/fast foods. We had no video games, no laptops, tablets or phones which kept us immobile (though they are promoted as 'mobile') - we played outside and were active. Our mum's didn't phone for a pizza, kebab, burger, curry or Chinese because we just didn't have that kind of stuff. We had the typical meat, spuds and two veg and that was fine. Sometimes on a Friday night, as a treat, we may have gotten fish & chips. I also don't buy into 'busy schedules' - my mum worked full time, cooked, cleaned and didn't have a dishwasher or an automatic washing machine (i think she had what is called a twin tub and Sundays were washing day). We didn't have carpets upstairs (had lino) and didn't have central heating (had a paraffin heater on the landing [boom boom boom boo..Esso Blue - anyone else remember that ad?] but did have frost on the inside of the windows in winter! We would have bath once a week on a Sunday night (started off in the kitchen sink as a kid and then progressed to the bath as you got older). Used to dread Songs of Praise or Coronation Street theme tunes on the telly because that was the signal for bed time. Oh, and our tellies were black and white and stood on spindly legs and you had to get off your chair to change the station (BBC1, 2 and ITV only). Our telly had a box on the back and you had to put coins in it and turn a butterfly dial to make it work (it was rented). Our fridge ran on gas, yes gas and it even had a pilot light!
    Reviews what I wrote and stops before it sounds like Monty Python sketch and hears my inner voice, shudders and yup......... I have formally turned into my Dad! Wanders off mumbling 'I don't belieeeve it'.

    • @cassia3545
      @cassia3545 8 років тому +2

      It's not just the fizzy drinks that is causing the problem, it is also the processed foods and ready meals which contain added sugar and weren't around before the Second World War because the women didn't work so they cooked the food meaning there was no need for ready meals. There are people who were born in the 1960's 70's who are very overweight though. Fizzy drinks combined with the processed meals and sweets all add up to a worse result.
      Not to mention all the other chemicals in the drinks which weren't around 120 years ago.

    • @DaleAmigaman
      @DaleAmigaman 8 років тому +1

      +Michael Seddon Exactly! I grew up in the 60's/70's too and all these fizzy drinks were available then and there were no sugar free versions either. I think there was one fat kid in our entire school. It is not sugar in drinks that are the problem. It's parents that can no longer say "NO" to their kids. Our next door neighbour buys McDonalds for his kid every single time he stays with him, which is three times a week! We can see the kid getting fatter as the weeks go by. It's parents that need to be fined for negligence if their children are fat. If you starved your child they would probably be taken away from you. If you seriously affect their health by overfeeding them meat, dairy and sugar then that's fine apparently!?

    • @FeuerblutRM
      @FeuerblutRM 5 років тому +1

      It's a combination of multiple factors.
      - more sugar in general not only in beverages
      - high fructose consumption by switching from sucrose to high fructose corn syrup
      - less activity (kids favor their TV or Xbox over sports or playing outside, for instance)
      - more spoiled kids because of antiauthoritarian upbringing
      - more processed & fibreless foods (usually goes hand in hand)
      - low fat propaganda from the 70s based on Ancel Keys' Seven Countries Study (which we know today was wrong and manipulated)
      - hormones and other endocrine disruptors from pesticides and plastics in our food and environment which are messing with our fat metabolism
      etc.
      Cutting the sugar content and banning sugared beverages is by far the most effective and easiest thing to change from this list, therefore I support Jamie Oliver's campaign.
      Soft drinks and lemonades are the only items containing sugar which don't contribute in any way to our daily nutrition, unless you put artificial vitamins in there (which are doing you no good), therefore he is completely right about sugared beverages earning the right to be focused on primarily.

    People need to educate themselves on some facts here. It is not sugary soft drinks that are cusing this obesity crisis. I am not suggesting sugary soft drinks are good for u but the fact is, it's diet soft drinks that are cusing this crisis. When u drink a diet soft drink u are tricking ur body into believing its getting carbs which it is not. This causes a crash in ur system and ur body starts wanting the carbs it believes it should have, this will cause u to become overly hungry and over eat, this is whats causing obesity. e.g if u buy a large take away meal and drink it with a diet coke u will eat far more than if u drunk a regular coke. Do not believe this, then put it to the test, u will see in a short period of time that drinking diet soft drinks is causing u to eat more. There are also many dangers to one's health in consuming artificial sweetners. The government is using people like Jamie Oliver, who is payed huge amounts of money to front this nonsense campaign in ordet to create a new form of tax, thus taking more from the general public than they already do. Its nothing more and nothing less.

    Although there is a need to combat obesity sugar tax is a dumb idea. It is typically the poorer people that are obese due to junk food. They buy it because it is cheaper - adding tax makes them poorer still and ends up lowering the quality of their life. Level out the price of good food and educate is a better solution. Take tax off eating healthy food and sitting down to eat and I bet people would rather sit in a cafe on their lunch break than buy a multipack of crisps and a pasty from a supermarket.

    • @cassia3545
      @cassia3545 8 років тому

      If they are so poor, how can they afford enough of the junk food to make them fat. If they spend slightly more money on healthy food they get more nutrition resulting in them not having to buy as much as they did before because the junk food didn't contain much nutrition. Overall it would be cheaper to eat healthy and be average weight than not to eat healthy and be fat.

    • @worbianbrownia2038
      @worbianbrownia2038 8 років тому

      +Astrid "Enough of the junk food" is inexpensive in comparison to healthier foods. The best example I can think of is of school children I worked with - They could buy a sandwich, apple and bottle of water for £3 in a meal deal or get a multipack of Monster Munch for a pound, a large can of Monster for the same and a bag of haribo to boot. pound for pound, to an uneducated person, that is far better value as it lasts longer and therefore fill you up more. Increasing the price on the above will make these people pay more - not switch. We need to educate them that 6bags of crisps, an energy during and enough sweets for a couple of adults on a Saturday nights is not a good idea for daily lunch. If the price of healthy food drops, even better as it will become a choice of value so even if education doesn't reach every mind the choice will. I see no need to combat this, even you would be edit from lower priced healthy food and better educated children!

    • @cassia3545
      @cassia3545 8 років тому

      Many people are educated, poor people too, however they still buy it because it is cheaper. What the taxation is trying to do is balance out the price of the unhealthy and the healthy so the people who know what is healthy will stop buying as many fizzy drinks etc. the children who are not educated need to be educated buy their parents as it is their responsibility.

    • @worbianbrownia2038
      @worbianbrownia2038 8 років тому

      +Astrid +Astrid You make valid points but in regards to your first response and your statement about nutrition and not having to buy as much is exactly the kind of thing I was referring. People are not that well educated about nutrition and therefore won't save money by buying less in the faith they are having better nutrition. To those that I speak of its about quantity not quality. On paper raising the price looks like a good idea but in reality a price hike will just cost them more - not change their attitude (except make them angry at the taxation). Take a look at drinking alcohol - no one has stopped just because tax has gone up. They just drink at home instead of pubs. Pubs go out of business, kids can see parents inebriated and people who would normally be refused drink by the bar staff for being too drunk have no one at home to tell them that and all the time the Government just get more cash from the people. Its not an identical scenario, but the result will be the same...the only thing that will happen is the gov gets more revenue, the poor get poorer and the fat stay the same.

      ***** Look at your own contradiction: if taxing it lowers the demand, we will be at an economic standstill, so where will the extra money come from to subsidy healthier options? For extra money to be created you would need to tax it without lowering the demand, which would defeat the purpose of having fewer people consuming sugar. By the way, the economic principle is that demand should dictate the price, not the other way around. What I'm saying is that is not that taxing something doesn't make it less commercial, but that this practice doesn't pay off in the end, it's a really bad idea.
      You could create a 100000 pound fine for speeding. Would it make fewer people speed? Yes, but it's still a crap idea.

The problem is people are already over weight, their resting insulin level is screwed, they consume processed sugary foods that spike their insulin forcing their body to get fatter. If they happen to be consuming food where the majority of calories in it are coming from fat and the insulin level is spiked then the body stores that fat. Why are Vegans opposed to this ? Its nothing to do with vegans.
    *Natural sugars are good for you, provided you get the proportions correct in terms of calories consumed vs calories burned.*
    *Refined sugars are fucking bad for you, because you can consume disproportionately large amounts of them in a relatively small drink / sweet, and its often children that consume them; given their body weight / refined sugar consumed in a fizzy drink; that is alot of calories for a small body - let alone an adult*
    All the calories that kids and obese adults are consuming from refined sugars are contributing towards the obesity crisis.
    *Sugar is not the singular cause of the crisis and nobody said it was - its a complex problem, but it certainly effects kids*
    Given that the tax in Mexico worked I think this is a good move. Now they can look at Meat and Dairy - even Jamie himself has been quoted saying how good the data looks for veggies and vegans which is great. I stopped eating meat when I was about 5 years of age.

    • @Fastdags
      @Fastdags 8 років тому

      +Howard Selby Because where does it stop if the motivation behind it is to protect people from themselves and to reduce NHS costs from the associated consequences:Perhaps:Stop or tax people who play RugbyStop or tax people who practice Martial ArtsIn fact, why not stop or tax anyone who chooses to engage in anything the State then decides as "risky and dangerous"This is yet another step along the road of a nanny state.Note: tax on Alcohol and Cigarettes has nothing to do with encouraging people to stop using them nor has it made any appreciable impact. It's all about revenue for the Government coffers.Proper education and parenting is the key.

    • @Davbach01
      @Davbach01 8 років тому

      Fastdags Governments use taxes to manipulate supply and demand, the great democracies rant about the free market, yet they use import and export duty to protect/control markets/competition, VAT exemption or fuel duty all amount to manipulation of the market for someone's benefit. Tobacco carries a massive tax burden and raises billion more than the NHS treatment cost - plus, has smoking increased?
      Yes, education is the answer - it also needs money from somewhere to pay for it though.

    • @Fastdags
      @Fastdags 8 років тому +1

      Howard Selby I didn't say otherwise. My point was that Tax on Alcohol and Cigarettes has nothing to do with the Government wanting to reduce their use (despite what they might say for PR reasons) or that in actual fact it has had any appreciable impact on usage. After all why would they since, as you correctly state, they raise huge sums of money for the Government coffers and only a fraction of it actually goes on the NHS. In reality, smoking has been impacted/reduced purely because of changes in social attitudes from increasing awareness of the associated dangers, helped massively by the ban on smoking in public places. Smokers are now treated as those sad bastards who have to stand outside the pub in the pouring rain just to suck on a cancer stick, whilst the rest of us are inside in the warmth enjoying a laugh and pint in a smoke free pub. Nothing works better than a social stigma.
      Now, if they could somehow create a social stigma wrt sugar then they'll have more success than using taxation. However, how are you going to do that when Jamie's books contain delicious recipes for home made Apple Crumble and Custard which contains 298 Calories per portion (over twice what's in a 330ml can of Coke) or programmes like Great British Bake Off, have you any idea how much sugar is used in fondant icing?
      But in any case, you haven't answered my underlying point about where this leads. Why should sugar be singled out when there are so many other things that people choose to do (or not do) that either puts them in harms way, causes ill health or even death in many cases. Why for example, not tax people for not getting enough exercise which most experts agree is the biggest single cause of ill health in our society?

    People keep saying a sugar tax on soft drinks worked in Mexico. It reduced sales of those drinks but are all kids in Mexico now slim and healthy? If they aren't then it is a total failure surely?
    If you do just 10 minutes research you will find it is meat and dairy that are the main cause of obesity and other health issues. It is not sugar. I know for myself because I've reversed all my health issues by not consuming those foods. Read books like 'The China Study' 'Proteinaholic' and watch the film 'Forks Over Knives' or look for video's on UA-cam by Dr John McDougall, Dr T Colin Campbell, Dr Michael Gregor etc. Look at all the health studies on NutritionFacts.org. The evidence is overwhelming.
    Even the BBC produced an episode of Horizon with two twins, one who ate a high fat diet for a month and the other high carb/sugar. At the conclusion it was the one who ate high fat who was close to being diabetic, had low energy and was generally in a lot worse health than the one who ate the high carb/sugar diet.

Right now you have very healthy people paying for unhealthy people. I know so many people that don't even go to the doctors but they pay that insurance every month or year. +Mahalakshmi Balasubramanian That's not the problem for the obesity crisis - which is why this tax has been brought into effect. You are voicing a Vegan opinion, which has nothing to do with this.
      Children are consuming vast amounts of *refined* sugar in fizzy drinks. The tax *is not applied to fruit juices and dairy/milk drinks*. Some 5 year old children are shown to be consuming their own body weight in *refined* sugar *annually* - if you research *refined sugar* - it can almost be classified as a drug and it *certainly causes obesity*.
      Children are not consuming proportionately enormous quantities of meat / dairy when you weigh it up against the amount of sugar they are consuming - which is mind-blowing.
      I understand that vegans want rid of meat / dairy - but I don't understand how this conflicts with that lifestyle/diet - its absolutely nothing to do with it.
      Now that sugar has been addressed, there is room to look at other factors that could indeed be meat, dairy, exercise etc.

Fat is the cause of gaining fat, as fat is stored in fatty tissue. pretty simple really, even that is too hard to grasp for you and the morons that take their children to eat fast food. The sugar tax has now been introduced. It will have more effect on peoples consideration on sugar intake not just from drinks. KFC Krushems have more sugar than their regular coke.So people need to however read the labels on other products they might change to.Why not just tax sugar and salt at sauce. That way manufactures will look at ways to use less sugar or salt throughout the food chain?
