Great Video, really enjoyed the 1hr builds. I think the Sherman was a much easier project to tackle over the FW190. suggestion I have for a future idea for a quick kit in a way. Painting the unbuilt Airfix kit on the sprues for display. A guy at my local club did the 1/72 mustang and I’m considering doing a A-4Q Skyhawk the same way. Painted, Decals applied and still on the sprues in a picture frame.
A really well done video. Amazing sound editing and the pace of it was perfect to show each step and what you were doing but not make it take any longer than it needed do. The end product was amazing considering the time spent hand would look great on any wargame table.
Impressive results for the lunacy of the time constraint. I remember about twenty years ago, I participated in a Fine Scale Modeler forum online challenge of Mad Tiger Day, building a Tiger tank in not one but twenty-four hours. I went with a 1/72 Dragon kit, and with the extra twenty-three hours, about the only think that would separate my Tiger from your Firefly is a proper job on the track painting and a three-color camo. Much like you swearing off any subsequent one-hour challenges, I to have foregone building to an artificially timed constraint.
I'm sure the Bolt Action guys must be all thumbs up. You can get a whole tank section completed in a single afternoon this way. Well done, Alex. I think the One Hour Challenge can be beaten successfully with the proper kit. Alas, it's a stress I'd never choose to go through. Have a great weekend, mate.
Hey you did it!! Cracking build and an excellent quality finish given the insane time limit. I was far more invested in wanting you to succeed with this challenge... having recommended the kit I would've felt personally responsible if you'd found it to be a complete howler! Apologies for not watching and replying sooner, I've subscribed and set notifications but FB does tend to bury stuff these days. So the acid (and very unfair) test would be for me to compare your build against the same kit that I built with no time pressures... Actually you win easily, mine is still unpainted!! Maybe seeing your build will boost my flagging modelling mojo enough to pick it up again.
I was head over heels on the Airfix Bren Carrier HO/OO scale since I was 10 years old. somewhere somehow I never managed to get one. 45 years later I'm still waiting to get the bren carrier in my hand. Talk about a nostalgic bucket list .....wow.
Your One-Hour-Challenge build looks pretty good. As you say, it won't win any IPMS contests. But I think it's still a nice piece that would be right at home on a wargaming table. That said, I still think a better 'personal challenge' is the Weekend Build, or a Weeklong Build. But as long as you had fun; that's the point of the hobby.
Nice build. The only thing I would have done differently - build the tank so it is facing the other direction. Thanks for sharing. Very enjoyable. I would say MORE One Hour Builds, please - if you were to ask me.
As I said with the aircraft build - two hours would still be fast and that would have given you enough time to address the detail painting that you didn't have time for. I might use a version of this - maybe an 'afternoon' or 'evening' build as a bit of fun in the middle of something that's complicated and demanding.
Unfortunately, a "2 hour challenge" is not a catchy UA-cam title, and we are slaves to both people's whims and the YT algorithm. If people don't click on a video, ot doesn't get recognised and is quickly buried - sad but true
Most of the kits I built as a kid, including (if I remember right) a Matchbox Sherman Firefly, were built in about an hour. Without paint. And looking a whole lot less impressive than this. :-)
Fun video. How about a video of doing an older model old-style, eg brushes and enamels only for painting (no acrylics, no air brush), separate suspension and vinyl tracks? To allow for the differences you could have 100 minutes . . .
i had the original airfix sherman. it had individual plastic-strip tracks to fit the wheels. they were made from metallic-looking plastic and the ends had to be joined.........
Hi. Made it this time. I would suppose that the way to model quickly is to take a tip from athletes and practice. EG built the kit of choice and become familiar with where the bits go and what needs cleaning up and your assembly order so you can save the milli seconds of looking at the plans. What got more paint, kit or fingers? Nice bit of entertainment.
Hull machine gun on a Firefly ? Is this Airfix's mistake ? Very quick build indeed. Ive still got a 1/35 Firefly that's so far taken 7 years to build and now it's just left in it's box. It only needs the finalities doing, but I've lost heart with it.😂
My guess is that Airfix wants to use the basic hull for other Sherman kits, and they figure that modelers concerned about this minor inaccuracy would cover the hull machine gun mount with a layer of sandbags, or something. But this is easily fixed. I remember in the mid-1970's when Monogram came out with their 1/32nd scale Shermans using the lower hull from their earlier M3 Lee/Grant kit that used an earlier suspension than the one needed for the later M4 Sherman. Master Diorama Builder Shep Paine noted this inaccuracy on his included diorama tip sheets, giving a quick tutorial on how to update the Sherman suspension. As for your 1/35th Firefly; we've all been there. Maybe this build video will inspire you to take a second look, and finish your model.
Yes, the hull mg is an Airfix error - it's shown on both the box art, the instructions and some models, though interestingly the CAD renders shown it correctly ommitted. As @modelermark172 mentions, easily corrected but I just built it as it came.
Hi I may be wrong but I don’t think the Firefly had a hull machine gun as it was plated over to allow more space for ammo. Nice build this would have taken me a week, lol
A Firefly with American markings! I wish the Americans had adopted the 17 pounder or a reasonable facsimile, because the 17pndr was superior to the 76mm on later Shermans! Yeah, I know it's just a model, but it's historically inaccurate!
MODEL BUILDING IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN AND RELAXING… Yes, it takes some work to clean up the pieces and make them fit properly, painting and decals… BUILDING MODELS IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN… not a job Model on……………. CHRIS from OHIO 🇺🇸
I agree, as I said in the first of these challenges - but these aren't meant as instructional videos, just a bit of fun for you as viewers, and a warning to all to exactly what you said - enjoy your modelling, it's not a race! 😁
I took a 1:72 Spitfire kit to a mate's house one day and was determined to build and paint it for him in the space of an afternoon visit (about 3 hrs) and I almost did! And I'm no expert like Mr Mann here 😊 No airbrush, either - just cheap flat brushes from the kiddy crafting range available from The Range. My second quick build visit with a 1:72 Folland Gnat using just the supplied paints, brush and glue was a disaster in comparison...!
That looks better than what I can do with unlimited time. Very nice job mate.
Thanks!
....and 1 hour to get the paint off of your hands after the build.
Nah, it took less than a minute - all acrylics, washed off easily!
You're bulding/painting a better tank in an hour than I did during my entire youth..
I have to admit - not too shabby for a speed build 👏👏👏 Next challenge: do it blindfolded 😎😁😁😁
That's one I'm not sure I'll accept the gauntlet on!
not just blindfolded. make it airfix's large-scale blower bentley............ eh ??

That's an. Interesting idea! May well do that one!
Very nice build! Now it needs a base with a simple diorama. Cheers!

It was an interesting exercise, but not something I feel like I need to repeat!

Agreed, you too!
This is so fun!!! And incredibly well executed challenge, bravo! 👏
Cheers!
Fantastic modelling skills. Wish I had your ability.
Just one point - a hill mounted machine gun on a Firefly...?
Yeah, it's an oddity of the starter kit - the full kit includes the correct blanking plate.
I really enjoyed this video, great job in such a short time! 👍👍👍
Thank you!
Great job for an 1 hour build. I'm not sure if I could do it , I tend to get a little bit messy 😅
Thank you! 😊
Great result.
Thanks!
That was almost as fast as building a real Sherman. 🤣

Haha! Hope it does boost the mojo and would love to see your finished model
very nice even with the time restraint , shame you didn't put the stars on skew ,
I think you did a great job. Just shows what can be done with limits imposed.
Thanks! It was certainly an improvement on where I left the Fw-190!

Hey, it’s better than anything I build now…regardless of how long I take! 😮😮😮
Well the journey is the destination - so enjoy your modelling!
Excellent job! Now do an Airfix 1:72 Cromwell tank in an hour 😊
I do have my eyes on one...
@@MannsModelMoments I've got TWO going spare and I dread the thought of building them!

Exactly!
I like the idea of unreasonable model making.
Me too!
Can you explain about the Pledge and transfer application please? That sounds new to me
Nice build. The only thing I would have done differently - build the tank so it is facing the other direction. Thanks for sharing. Very enjoyable. I would say MORE One Hour Builds, please - if you were to ask me.
Maybe I'll try the F-35 starter...or maybe a car...I have the Ford starter set,....
great fun challenge
Thanks! The Sherman was more fun as a challenge build than the Fw190 for sure!

The hull looks very good, it's just the tracks and wheels that slightly let it down.
this looks great!
Thanks!
For an hour's worth of work, I say it looks great!
Thanks!
That was so much better than the Mary Rose you did. Good job in one hour though.
Most of the kits I built as a kid, including (if I remember right) a Matchbox Sherman Firefly, were built in about an hour. Without paint. And looking a whole lot less impressive than this. :-)
It looks better than the ones I take days to build if we’re being honest… great job!’

I could, but it'd be more like a one day challenge given enamels drying times...
not bad for a 1hr build but do agree with taking time.well on the other hand, just to see if it can be done under an hr,not bad at all.
Thanks!
3:43 the Sherman firefly didn’t have a hull machine gun
I made the kit as supplied - it's an error of Airfix's tooling
i had the original airfix sherman. it had individual plastic-strip tracks to fit the wheels. they were made from metallic-looking plastic and the ends had to be joined.........
I've done that too!

You're right - it's an error with the starter kit...I just built it as it came. Airfix corrected this in the stand-alone version of the kit.
