Tamiya are without doubt my favourite model company. Every kit I have built by them has been a pure dream. The ease of construction, the quality and crispness of their moulds. All exemplary. My next project will be their F4u1 Corsair in 1/32 scale, which I’m really looking forward to. I’m just hoping and praying that they do my favourite aircraft, Grumman’s F8F Bearcat in 1/32 scale. That would be a dream come true for me.
Same for me. Well them and Meng. Their kits you can pretty much throw up in the air and they come down built. Their kits are as crisp as they come as well. 👍
My first Tamiya I bought was at a convenience store, one of those snap together mini cars that run on double a batteries. One of the cooling things I encountered as a kid.
Notice how the Tamiya tank model makers style of painting for static model without diorama scene is basically to do no weathering at all, except a little subtle to scale dry brush on edges highlights, and they really look really amazing without the mud ,filters worn out exhaust rust, or rusty tracks ect .This minimalist style that really works , makes you focus on the model and not the after effects of the weathering products available .
I've heard that there are two types of models, artistic and realistic. I agree with Tamiya's realistic approach. They don't look like they just drove out of an oil painting.
I think it's the style preference of the shop owners. It shows the model in a way that can be built by a "normal" person. Revel does the same with their presentation models.
I know it comes down to the personal taste of the modeler, but I'm not a huge fan of overdoing the weathering, unless it's needed to fit into the diorama. I think the Tamiya modelers have it just about right....although to not put ANY mud/dirt on a tank is a bit of a stretch.
Tony Greenland had said that he modeled military vehicles, not the country that they operated in. The same goes for too much gradation or highlighting, It's not a Warhammer figure..
I remember and will never forget my old man buying me my first Tamiya rc car it was the boomerang was one of the fastest in it's time I was the only kid outside near my place with it Thankyou dad
As a Tamiya fan since I was a teen in the late 70's, that's total heaven for me. Thanks for the tour,Andy! I'm sending my brother there when he goes to Japan in August. lol
I remember walking into my first Lego shop as a kid and being completely dumbfounded/overwhelmed by all the shelves full of Lego kits. Now as an adult its the same going into model shops like that and Andy's.
Yeah, this video is somewhat overwhelming particularly with endlessly repeating muzak without narration. I wish one of the staff came over to tell us some things about the store and the company.
That was a real treat, Andy. Best video tour I've ever seen of that store. It also reminds me that the next time I travel to Tokyo, bring an empty suitcase!!!

The quality of the models is what sets Tamiya apart. Every piece fits perfectly. Those dioramas are the best! love how we all use the same UA-cam music for our videos😁
Amazing! Great video. I am dumbfounded by just how many models Tamiya has, and how cool this store is. Just imagine what the factory display area must look like. I have never seen anything like this before. I am close to retirement now and Japan is on my bucket list.
There's a tamiya factory 1 hour away from here, it's in lapulapu island near the airport, in Cebu Philippines, there's at least two large Japanese factories there, Tamiya and Timex
We had several hobby shops with nearly this selection in the San Francisco Bay Area. I worked at 2 of them. Dream come true! Would love to visit Tamiyas home. Thank you
I was there about 3 weeks ago. Bought me a white Tamiya tee also my Japanese friend gave me as a gift a Tamiya hand towel. Very pleased with the visit to the Shinagawa station where the store is. Everyone who models needs to visit it one day for real. Peace to Andy and all the chat. Visit Japan !!!

This store is not at the Shinagawa station. It's in Shinbashi, Minato...
Boy! If I ever had a chance to go to that store, I would be broke. But then again, I would say the same thing if I was ever able to go to your store. I’m in Indiana.
That red Lamborghini kit on the left at 16:44 was my first Tamiya kit way back in 1988, and I've been a fan ever since. What got me over the years is how there's never a mis-aligned kit with warped parts that require filler, and how on every kit every last part fits cleanly exactly where it's supposed to. Throw in their acrylic paints that blew away Testors and the others, and I've become quite the brand loyalist with Tamiya.
Lol, I was there two weeks ago, pawing through all those kits. Great store, though I was hoping they would have some kits exclusive to the store. Kits are dirt cheap in Japan - you're talking 30% - 40% less than the US. I picked up the Stug IIIB, 1/48 Hien, and 1/32 Type 21 Zero for less than $100 US!
WOW!!! I’m speechless. I love Tamiya. They are the best with all their products and accessories. I know if I went that store I’ll be spending lots and lots of money. My wife will have to stop me. That store is a dream and I hope one day I’ll visit it.
If I was Tamiya and designing that store I'd have some professional modeler in a glassed in workshop building various kits and demonstrating techniques. At our nearby art museum which has some of the finest Japanese art on display they imported a Japanese sword master to make swords in a recreated ancient sword workshop. Makes it all come alive. It's one of my reasons for not building car models, most of the time they just sit there, not in a diorama to tell a story. (yes I could make a diorama of a car, but it's not the norm). It's how I started watching the channel, was watching Andy building dioramas, which is what I most enjoy building too, plus the story part of it (researching it, and figuring out how to convey that story).
WOW! Thank you for sharing this. Tamiya is my favorite model company. I especially loved the Tiger maintenance diorama! And the ships! If I were there I'd have to get on of each tank model.
This is wonderful, thank you for sharing. Japan seems like such a great place to visit for the culture, food, history....AND an awesome company’s museum and store...heck ya!
As a Tokyo resident, this is one of my go to shopping stores; amazing choice a great service. I also recommend to visit a Joshin store like the one in Oji, you would be impressed by the hobby area!
The store is nice to browse, but all the prices are full MSRP. If it's an exclusive or limited item, then ok, but Amazon Japan generally has normal release Tamiya products at a nice discount. For example, the pre-tax MSRP for the Tamiya 1/48 F-14D (61122) is 8800 yen, but Amazon currently has it for 6700 yen. If you live in Japan, it's a no brainer which price is better.
@@ericng5707 agree, I also found Amazon to be always cheaper. But still cool place for smaller stuff like paints and so on, and to let the kid watch the trains ;€
Thanks for the cool video. For those of you lucky enough to visit this store, the akihabara district is a short subway ride away. Tons of discount and vintage model shops in that area.
I hope your going to the factory as well. It's not too far from Tokyo and it's free with an email to Tamiya. Great place to go and it's empty most of the time. I went in 2019 and there was a lovely lady there. She could speak English but was so helpful, even gave me some free stuff!
That shop is great. I recently found an original 1:12 scale Fairlady 240ZG from the 1970's but it was missing the parts tree for the chrome parts. I went there and was able to order a replacement tree for a reasonable price. The shop keepers were friendly and helpful and the service took less than a week!
I'll be visiting Tokyo in the beginning of July and this shop is definitely on my list to go, too. Thank you very much for giving me such a great impression beforehand 🙂 And I've heard there are also a lot of huge model shops in Akihabara, too.
There are so many! But what really blew me away was the standard of the models on display by local experts. The realism and subtlety of the models, whether aircraft or armour, was truly perfect! (And a little depressing) Safe and happy travels.
Wow, that's Tamiya heaven. I'm more partial to the R/C stuff, but there have just about anything and everything Tamiya. If I ever get a chance to visit, that would be one of my stops for sure!
That was amazing, thanks Andy for the vidio, i could spend all day in there, it makes me sad that here in the UK we don't have so many model shops now, most off it is done online.
What a toy store. Take my money! Did they have and Francois Verlinden diorama's in the store? His dioramas were always in the Tamiya catalogues. Couldn't see if any of the German armoured vehicle's had zimmerit on them. I used to religiously but the Tamiya catalogue every year. I loved all the line work drawings they had in them. I got into they're RC cars. I built myself the super champ buggy. Then My uncle bought my nephew a second hand Tamiya RC buggy. He asked me to rebuild it for my cousin. I rebuilt it to match my super champ as I had gone to a poly body. It turns out that a regular in his pub, was a big cheese at the UK distributor for Tamiya. I got to meet him after building my cousin the first 4wd Tamiya buggy (can't think of the name of it but I saw it on the shelf in you vid. He gave me the official Tamiya RC car bag and cap. I was so happy.
Kudos for the way you presented this tour. If I were in your shoes I probably would have narrated it and ended up saying wow about 1000 times. 😊 Great job, thanks!
Thanks so much for this video. Brought back childhood memories when I used to build these models after buying them from a hobby shop. Mum used to be upset with me for having the Tamiya paints and my brushes everywhere - couldn't afford an airbrush as the time.
Fantastic. I love that they can leave some of the built models on the shelf without glass cases. Could never do that in the US without them getting touched or stolen. Sad.
I have and will continue to purchase almost exclusively Tamiya. The quality, accuracy and attention to detail is second to none. Moreover, every item manufactured in Japan, in my lifetime of model building and driving has been exemplary. I have literally forbid my family from purchasing any GM products. As a former skilled trades contractor at various GM plants throughout Michigan, I have been witness to some UNBELIEVABLE and ASTOUNDING F,U,B,A,R,s related to their products! Thankfully, some companies, such as Tamiya ect have put quality, dependability and a conscious into their products 🇯🇵👍
Wonderful video, I'm hell jealous right now. I was kind of hoping the store was _at_ the factory and you might get a tour through, ngl that would have made my week.
Awesome andy on monday i took in an out of production tamiya kit think the date on the box was from 1974 it was a M16 half track kit still in the original factory seal i picked up the luv buggy kit somewhat of a trade hope you or someone will enjoy that half track kit
Nodelwunderland in Hamburg Germany is a huge place. You will need 2 days to see everything in detail. Been there a few years ago around x/mas and was in 1 word,AMEZING to see. Now they got even the monaco f1 racetrack with cars who overtake eachother, how cool is that?? And when you ask them, they will show your behind the scene rooms, where they build the miniatures, charge the cars etc. Was a great experiance them, and sure still will be for everyone
Just been there a month ago, very friendly, not too big but items are good to me, just brought something but they give me a magazine and something more, it is so happy to buy a model in Tokyo, especially in Tamiya shop.
id be broke from all the high end radio controlled kits thanks for sharing this with the hobby community, the one in the current profile pic is a TA07R, i have 2 trf 420x
Awesome. I love it. I built models and they always came out shit but awesome learning experience. If i were in there, i would not know what to buy, they all look excellent.
It's a constant surprise to me that Tamiya have never produced any item of earthmoving machinery, based in Japan, along with hitachi and komatsu, I would have thought that a small range of equipment in 1/25th would be a possibility In fact i can only think of one or two items ever produced....and now long out of production...
Dear Tamiya Please manufacture the Sherman M4A4 or better known as the British Sherman V in 1/48 scale. This model of Sherman was involved in many important battles fought by the British and Canadians in Italy and the Normandy campaign until the end of the war.

Nice video, obvious you prefer tanks and such. That was one heck of a diorama of the tank being repaired!
a bit of paradise for model builders..😎
I like their models. And I like the Trumpeter ones also. Such great details to the models.
I have wanted to visit that place since I was a kid!
Great dioramas in there. Thanks for the tour!
Everything beautifully displayed to whet the appetite! Thanks. That was very comprehensive tour of the store. Kits, tools, accesories, all the scales.
Sad.
Same in Great Britain.
Not in France ! There is no more shops ! 😉
Filmed professionally. Thank you.
Thankfully, some companies, such as Tamiya ect have put quality, dependability and a conscious into their products 🇯🇵👍
fantastic vid! 19:38 I see a Hornet RC car. I had one of those almost 40 years ago lol One of my buddies had the Grasshopper
Wonderful video, I'm hell jealous right now. I was kind of hoping the store was _at_ the factory and you might get a tour through, ngl that would have made my week.
Make sure to visit the Hasegawa HQ in Shizuoka. I dont know if they changed things since the rona but they have a nice display of actual subjects.
Thanks for showing us this place. Soon I'll find my way there too. :)
I was there couple years back and didn't know there was an upstairs you can visit, this is cool.
Awesome andy on monday i took in an out of production tamiya kit think the date on the box was from 1974 it was a M16 half track kit still in the original factory seal i picked up the luv buggy kit somewhat of a trade hope you or someone will enjoy that half track kit
I am ready to move to Tokyo just to be near this store !
Visiting Tamiya is on my bucket list. As is visiting Kato and Modelwunderland.
Been there several times and will visit again next month
Always a good video. Man I would be a kid in a candy store there. Andy you need to come out to Daytona beach still.
Thanks for this video on the tamiya plamodel factory store in Tokyo! Haven't been there for years.
What a great store, thanks for sharing 👍👍
Just been there a month ago, very friendly, not too big but items are good to me, just brought something but they give me a magazine and something more, it is so happy to buy a model in Tokyo, especially in Tamiya shop.
id be broke from all the high end radio controlled kits thanks for sharing this with the hobby community, the one in the current profile pic is a TA07R, i have 2 trf 420x
oh crap! i missed you! i was there yesterday too! :-) what a great shop!
Cries in a place without hobby stores 😭
Edit: Model Cakes? 😮
Fantastic tour 🎉
Cool video Andy - I was lucky enough to go to the Singapore one, although it was more geared to RC Cars, great shop all the same , cheers Liam
I demand a Tamiya store in San Francisco!😍 Thanks Andy👋🏻
Awesome.
Nice vid smooth and detailed... Always looking for the Sand Scorcher but didn't see it !
A modellers heaven!!❤
Indeed ❤
Dear Tamiya
Please manufacture the Sherman M4A4 or better known as the British Sherman V in 1/48 scale. This model of Sherman was involved in many important battles fought by the British and Canadians in Italy and the Normandy campaign until the end of the war.
What a cool experience. Superb products and models.
