The Grand Wagoneer name actually did live on for one more more year after 1991, as the highest trim level of the 1993 Grand Cherokee, with a 5.2 liter V8 engine and wood paneling.

Oh, yeah! My grandparents bought one of the last model year AMC-built Grand Wagoneers as their "retirement vehicle" - it was the SUV with the highest towing capacity at the time, so they bought it and a big camper trailer to tour the country for a couple years after they retired. And they used the 4 wheel drive on it regularly, after settling down in a remote part of Arizona. I still remember going to visit them over the summer when I was in high school, and we drove it to some canyon in Northern Arizona or Southern Utah (no, not the Grand Canyon) and did a 4WD tour of the canyon - the tour guides let you choose to ride in one of their Jeep Wranglers or use your own vehicle if it was 4WD. The tour guide drove, though. He *REALLY* liked driving their Grand Wagoneer... Any time he approached anything even remotely technical, he's ask cautiously if he could proceed, for fear of scratching/denting their vehicle. My grandpa would boldly "Go for it!" And where their house was in Southern Arizona, if they wanted to get to Tucson, it was either "a few miles of back roads, followed by a dozen miles of state highway" or "a few miles directly across the desert then a couple miles of state highway." My grandpa always drove the "across the desert" route. It probably scared other drivers seeing him come racing across the desert, then just merging on the highway where there was no ramp. (Sadly, the whole area has become built up now. And while my grandfather passed away a few years ago, my grandmother still lives there. Her house still has the back porch face directly on to empty desert, but there is now a town only about a mile away that direction, and the front side, where there used to be only a few other houses then "town" a couple miles away is now completely developed all the way to the town center. Anyway, I miss their Wagoneer. After the town started developing, they sold it and bought a '98 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight.

I realized something about Liberty's recently. It's mostly lower mile ones around because they are not worth maintaining past 200k miles. Unless they have a fastidious owner they're junk by then.
I remember one of the big car magazines of the time did a comparison test between the popular SUV's of the time. This was just before Chrysler ended production. IIRC it was the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Chevy Suburban, The Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Nissan Pathfinder, and Fords new Explorer. Despite being the oldest design in the group the Jeep still took third ahead of the Ford and the Nissan. The writer commented on while the road handling showed the platforms age, the Jeep handled the off road part of the competition at least as well as the winner (the Toyota). It's been a wish list vehicle of mine for years. Great video!
One of reasons why its so comfy might be the 200k miles. I had a 160k Passat, lowered even and whatnot but somehow it was the most comfortable thing Ive ever driven. I loved every mile in it, It just glided over everything. The very next car after it I had was the new one, not just a facelift, whole new platform and all better supposedly. It was stiff as a rock, regular version. As 99% of cars are today. Its horrible what theyre doing to cars, it used to be clear, they competed in luxury and comfort, stiffness was left for sportscars now they compete who makes the most versatile car and so it terrible.
I had an 89 Grand wagoneer as my first vehicle ever! That truck was miles better than any truck on the trail. Even with street tires, you could bury that truck to the mirrors and still go through it. I was in mine one time years back and was chugging through it. I came across this guy and his wife in an 89 Dodge Prospector trying to pull an old Willys that had slid down the hill. They were stuck too. Mind you i wasn't in 4 low yet. I threw her in low and backed up off the Dodge and went around. I hooked that Prospector to me, and he hooked the Willys to his and i gave that 360 hell! I pulled them both out on street tires lol.
I love the FSJ’s. The Grand Wagoneer, the Wagoneer they made from the 60’s on up, the full size Cherokee they started making in ‘74 when they killed off the Commando that I have a few of. Never thought I’d see the day that they’re worth so much money, I picked the wrong Jeep to start collecting
Reminds me of Thr 4x4 homer Simpson bought. I'd love that car, and I hate SUV and owners of 4x4s that have no reason for having one. My only issue is fuel. You'd need to be the queen to be able to afford to run that in the uk. But damn it's so cool.
I had one as my first car. Wait until all the power windows including the tailgate go. It was cool but a straight up turd. This obsession with these is beyond me.
I miss 20th century vehicles. When Jeeps were Jeeps, Cars were Cars, and Trucks were Trucks, and nobody had ever applied the term "crossover" to a vehicle
Hey Tyler, if you're serious about keeping the Jurassic Park Jeep, feel free to join the Jurassic Park Motor Pool on Facebook. They are a wonderful group of people with a plethora of resources. They can help guide you to finish that YJ!
I like the overall look of the patriot...it’s one of the few squarish vehicles out there reminiscent of what I think a Jeep should be. Too bad they are awful to drive and not very reliable 🙄
I’m still driving my first car, a 2001 XJ Limited (7 years later) and have had 2 other cars since and it is still the best. My grandmother bought it brand new and I got it from her for my 16th birthday. Still looks in like new condition and never has given me any problems. At my college of about 15000 kids I still see about 5-6 other XJ’s on campus daily. Great car and we’re a family of Jeeps. Most recently we added a Grand Cherokee Diesel, great new SUV.
I owned 2, 91 and a 93 and I agree with everything you say. Simplicity at its best and the ride is/was better than any SUV made (including the 07 RR HSE I owned). Still, like you, wish I had kept that last one but oh well such is life. Also agree if they redid this version but with modern electronics (engine basically) it would sell...... maybe not mini van change the industry sell but sell none the less.
@@mad_cat431 the Russians were kind of pulling the strings with East Germany so it almost qualified as a Russian car. At least the Trabant wasn't a reworked Fiat, you have to give it that.
@@smirkingdevil any Trabant or Lada over 25 years old (which includes any model Trabant) can be imported into the states as they're exempt from DOT/EPA regulations. The only exception is California. Getting a grey market car CARB certified for registration in California is really expensive. You can always register in Montana though....
And my Jeep Liberty (v6 5 speed 4wd) was easily the most reliable car I've owned and was tons of fun. My wife currently has a Patriot (2.4 manual 4wd) and while underpowered is a very capable vehicle for snowy climates. I just wish I didn't have to rebuild the transmission every 40k miles. I'm on rebuild #4 now.
same here! my 08 liberty with the auto trans has been crazy reliable in the three years ive owned it. i regularly beat mine up offroad, and it just keeps chugging along
Hey Hoovie have you ever thought of buying an AMC Eagle SX4? Seems like the kind of car you would like? They're cheap and would make an awesome offroading video.
I had a Eagle SX4 (straight 6 in it). Bought it in 1987 for $1200 and sold it a few years later for the same price. Just slid a piece of wallboard under it so I could slide under to change the oil. All the ones in Canada were Ziebarted at the factory - and I didn't have much in the way of rust on it when I sold it. Mine was light blue.
Funny story on one of those. One of my dad's doctor friends bought one brand new around 1989, fully loaded with all the trimmings. He was really proud of it. The second time he took it to the gas station, a young attendant said "Nice Wagoneer you got there." The doctor said "Thanks." then the attendant said, "Did you buy it like that, or did you restore it yourself?"
The new wagoneer will be like the new beetle... It will have the name and probably similar design to their predecessor but, all the innards & parts that made the original great will be replaced with glitchy, expensive electronic garbage and they will lose resale value like a range rover. 👎
Why the fuck would you dislike a video just bc of a paid promotion? How else is he supposed to keep on making awesome videos for us especially since YT probably doesnt pay enough
Dude.. you are missing a HUGE opportunity. Have you ever considered renting those rides out to movie studios for TV shows? BTW, I want that wagoneer for suggestion this AWESOME idea.. you're welcome. and you can contact me via my youtube page to send it to me. Thanks!
I guess your old Jeeps are like our old Land Cruisers and Land Rovers here is Australia. FJ40’s etc can go for crazy money, but I’d still absolutely love to own one, one day.
I also loved these things! I had an 84 (AMC) and an 88 (Chrysler) Grand Wagoneer. Really, not very much difference between the two, accept the 84 had 1970s style shag carpet plus a factory AM/FM/CB radio and the 88 had a grill and slight interior upgrade that gave it aliitle more up-to-date look for its time. The most comical part was the use of the old oval and square headed GM keys (steering column and door locks were sourced from GM) with the AMC (‘84) and Chrysler pentastar (‘88) logos stamped into them! Tyler was way too young to remember how hopelessly out of style these trucks seemed by 1992. At the time, they were regards an unbreakable by some and electrically troubled rust buckets by others. Most of their owners back then were over 55 males. Nobody really cried when they died (trucks not their owners) and collector’s item status came much, much later. They were extremely expensive when purchased new then, so a Land Rover or a Land Cruiser was it’s competition then and bother were trendier, as was the Cherokee. It was really a no brainer for Chrysler to cut it from the lineup, since most people thought of it along the same line as the long dead International Scout (a cool thing now, but not back then). Hoovie will probably hate to read this but the only modern SUV that I have driven lately that even comes close to the ride and feel of driving an old Wagoneer is the previous generations of Land and Range Rovers (like the one he buried)... probably why I have learned to love the old Brits dispute their numerous flaws! If Chrysler does bring it back, I bet it won’t have the same charm and feel as the original, thus it would disappoint me.
Now my family has a2006 commander but it is the limited and has a hemi...it’s hard loaded with all of Chrysler’s doodoo of the time. But it reallly is a good truck and and has held up very well given its age and 103k miles.
*Hoovies Garage* Love the Wagoneer, privileged to have driven one, also owned an AMC Eagle. Certified used car flipper, I have driven many, many cars. My favorite hands down is the 1984 Porsche 944, N/A and turbo. Owned 2 of them, drove 50,000 cheap and fun miles in them (unless they we're broken lol). Have you done an episode with a 944?, If not maybe consider it. My buddies called them the poorvettes, I called them fun sports cars with legendary handling.
I remember when they announced that they were going to cancel production of the Wagoneer, I thought it was really a stupid move on their part. Just when Cadillac and Lincoln were coming out with their SUV's . I live in Mexico and drive a '97 Honda CRV. I can't pull into a gas station without someone wanting to buy it from me, go figure lol.
I had an '88. I prefer the grille design of the '86-'91s. A place called Wagonmasters restores those things and sells them for stupid money. They ship them all over the world. A lot of them also go to Nantucket, for whatever reason. I love to have a mint one. Especially an Emerald Green '91 Final Edition. I think only 150 green '91s were ever produced. Keep that one, Tyler.
Only car with exact same body 30 yrs 1963 to 1993. Killed off by downsized cherokee which got 4 drs so wagoneer variant only distinguished by stack headlights and wood. Park it and people ask how much. Tonka made non wood toys of these
God almighty I wish I would have bought one 15 years ago when you could find one that wasn't roached out, hard to do in Iowa. Chrysler is going upscale with the new one? Pfffttt... AMERICAN MOTORS CORP. made them for the working man, the guy that enjoyed the outdoors and wanted to haul the family around in a nice rig. Jeep going luxury. GM fires another 15,000 employees. Trump wants to rake the forest. God help the Republic.
I like your videos but I politely disagree with your opinion of the Commander. I own a loaded 2010 Commander that has been a great car. I have over 145,000 miles on it and the car still looks and runs great.
Actually it probably literally is true that there are more XJ Cherokees running around than Libertys. More than 2x as many XJ’s were sold as the Liberty. Granted the XJ has been out of production quite a lot longer but Liberty doesn’t hold up as well.
A buddy of mine in high school had an '85 AMC Jeep Cherokee with a 2.5 litre 4-cylinder engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. We called it the Jeep O' Doom. We beat the hell out of that thing. It had 350K miles on it, was held together by Bondo and duct tape, and he even rolled it, but it kept going strong. 0-60 could have been timed on a sundial, but torque to climb up a wall. Great offroading rig. Especially since he didn't care how much it got beat up. Great times.

Nasty cheap looking watches. And - Oh My God, 1 minute and 20 seconds on them - snooze alert. P.S. I too love the Wagoneer, it looks majestic.
Hoovie those key fobs look a bit heavy. Let me hold some for ya
The jeep liberty was absolute garbage. 😂
Reminds me of Thr 4x4 homer Simpson bought.
I'd love that car, and I hate SUV and owners of 4x4s that have no reason for having one. My only issue is fuel. You'd need to be the queen to be able to afford to run that in the uk. But damn it's so cool.
Stephen Butler that's why he played the Canyonero song in the beginning.
@@herbiehusker1889 I'd already written it by then, and thought that was the song. It must of been 20 years since I've seen that episode. Lol.
I had one as my first car. Wait until all the power windows including the tailgate go. It was cool but a straight up turd. This obsession with these is beyond me.
I'm a simple person. I see a Jurassic Park Jeep, I click hahaha
I miss 20th century vehicles. When Jeeps were Jeeps, Cars were Cars, and Trucks were Trucks, and nobody had ever applied the term "crossover" to a vehicle
I don't normally like SUV's but that Grand Wagoneer is awesome.
The WJ 99-04 is great cars. Love the drivetrains, looks and the solid axels. But the Grand Wagoneer is the king hands down, and XJ the queen;)
Hey Tyler, if you're serious about keeping the Jurassic Park Jeep, feel free to join the Jurassic Park Motor Pool on Facebook. They are a wonderful group of people with a plethora of resources. They can help guide you to finish that YJ!
Love the mods to the truck in the profile!
Thanks @jack Adams. I sold it to a friend to get a stock 2wd S10 blazer that's now been dropped. Lol
The fact they didnt make the rear window roll down on the new 2021 Wagoneer is a huge disappointment. They look good but jus too big and expensive.
John Candy's car in The Great Outdoors. Can I get a thumbs up?
The first thing i thought about when i saw it. It was The Great Outdoors
"We shoulda brought Uncle Roman's car!" as he drives away with the bears on his roof and hood is one my favorite moments in the movie.
John Candy could make taking off his socks entertaining. "I'm saying you ARE stuck in Wichita."
@@trvr82 He could make typing on the computer or reading a phone book entertaining.
Still waiting for him to buy the uncle buck car and take his daughter to school.
I like the overall look of the patriot...it’s one of the few squarish vehicles out there reminiscent of what I think a Jeep should be. Too bad they are awful to drive and not very reliable 🙄
You sound like you'd wear a fancy watch
I taint mistaken He does generally wear expensive watches. Maybe not in videos sponsored by MVamt
12 yards long, 2 lanes wide, 65 tons of American pride. Canyonero...Canyonero. Dat episode was a classic.🤣
Hello sir. I'm very happy with my 2011 grand Cherokee,,,, so far, almost a hundred thousand on it.
Same here with my 2011 Jeep Liberty, has just over 100,000 miles on it and is easily one of the most reliable cars I've owned.
100k miles is something to be proud of now adays ? Cars likes Toyota’s are averaging over 200k without major problems. Jeeps will always be JUNK
Hi driving
So you are supposed to run your car into the ground instead of taking care of it?
The New Wagoneer is like 100 grand.
Just buy a Range Rover. I can't see someone spending 100k + on a *Jeep*
Move to 1:20 to skip the snake oil sales job. Enjoy!!
Its not "snake oil" hes literally just advertising watches
I have a mostly screen accurate jurassic jeep wrangler. #29 and I'll never sell it! it's bulletproof with the straight six 4.0
I love Jurassic park jeeps lol
My biggest issue with Hoovie is that when he reviews some beat up old car, I want it!
quartz watches are for peasants.
quartz
@@Gramps83 thanks...should i fix it? should i leave the error?
i thnk i 'll fix it...
Mechanical watches are better in almost every way and are not even much more expensive.
@@alitheretrokid thats not true at all
@@jacobfleming565 you can get a Seiko 5 auto for $100 or less.
I wasn’t finished watching Daddy Doug’s video 😡
I owned 2, 91 and a 93 and I agree with everything you say. Simplicity at its best and the ride is/was better than any SUV made (including the 07 RR HSE I owned). Still, like you, wish I had kept that last one but oh well such is life. Also agree if they redid this version but with modern electronics (engine basically) it would sell...... maybe not mini van change the industry sell but sell none the less.
Video starts at 1:25
I always chuckle when I see ads for watches. I havent worn a watch in 20 years.
Buy a communist car, like a Trabant or a Lada 😂
Trabant isn't even a Russian car
@@mad_cat431 alright alright, a *communist* car :P
@@mad_cat431 the Russians were kind of pulling the strings with East Germany so it almost qualified as a Russian car.
At least the Trabant wasn't a reworked Fiat, you have to give it that.
Probably not legal for street use in the US due to government regulations.
Put a snorkel on it and drive it into a river. Show Lexus how it's done.
who wears watches anymore?
no one Rolex owners basically
Oreo Jumper Guinea Pigs love my Day-Date actually haha funny you said that!
THIS IS SUPER COOL, LOVE THE WAGONEER, DOT SELL IT WHAT EVER YOU DO.
Ian Colquhoun haven’t had issues with my trans (knock on wood). What year do you have? I have 2005 3.7L
@@Varrylickers it's my patriot with the biodegradable transmission. The Liberty was unstoppable.
same here! my 08 liberty with the auto trans has been crazy reliable in the three years ive owned it. i regularly beat mine up offroad, and it just keeps chugging along
Ian Colquhoun oh I see I totally read that wrong
A reliable jeep? Have you ever driven....a Honda....?
Hey Hoovie have you ever thought of buying an AMC Eagle SX4? Seems like the kind of car you would like? They're cheap and would make an awesome offroading video.
I had a Eagle SX4 (straight 6 in it). Bought it in 1987 for $1200 and sold it a few years later for the same price. Just slid a piece of wallboard under it so I could slide under to change the oil. All the ones in Canada were Ziebarted at the factory - and I didn't have much in the way of rust on it when I sold it. Mine was light blue.
Only 46 views, never been this early for a Hoovies Video.
Well it's still 46 views 😂
Funny story on one of those. One of my dad's doctor friends bought one brand new around 1989, fully loaded with all the trimmings. He was really proud of it. The second time he took it to the gas station, a young attendant said "Nice Wagoneer you got there." The doctor said "Thanks." then the attendant said, "Did you buy it like that, or did you restore it yourself?"
We all know hoovey is nouveau-riche, no amount of wood paneling will change that.
Irony: the flashing clock on the stove while he's shilling for the watch company sponsoring the video...
Last time I was this early, Dougie was marveled by a Bentley...as usual..
The new wagoneer will be like the new beetle... It will have the name and probably similar design to their predecessor but, all the innards & parts that made the original great will be replaced with glitchy, expensive electronic garbage and they will lose resale value like a range rover. 👎
I hit it with a *dislike!* for the MVMT promotion. Otherwise, great video as always!
Didn’t they make a wagoneer in 93 with the grand Cherokee body?
You are correct
My mother-in-laws neighbors son had one of these. It was barley hit on the fender and he sent it to the junkyard 🤷🏻♂️
i don´t like suv´s but these oldschool boxy wood paneling pickups/jeeps are really cool :D
The ZJ was a great replacement for the wagoneer. I had one and it was a pleasure to own and drive. It broke a lot but it was easy to work on.
Now my family has a2006 commander but it is the limited and has a hemi...it’s hard loaded with all of Chrysler’s doodoo of the time. But it reallly is a good truck and and has held up very well given its age and 103k miles.
Love the Commander! Ours is pushing 180K, Limited, Hemi, lift, etc. Wouldn't trade it for most SUV's made today.
*Please do a video on how you fix that sagging headliner! I need to know what the Car Wizzard thinks works and doesnt work for sagging headliners.*
Jeep liberty’s were absolute shit.
Hoovie take some SOS pads to the white stripe around the wagoner's tires and it will shine bright again
Sad to say the Fiat Grand Wagoneer will probably fail to live up to the Wagoneer name.
And the answer is still... yes.
Only car with exact same body 30 yrs 1963 to 1993. Killed off by downsized cherokee which got 4 drs so wagoneer variant only distinguished by stack headlights and wood. Park it and people ask how much. Tonka made non wood toys of these
*KEY construction got some nice free marketing* @ 5:11 :)
I have over 145,000 miles on it and the car still looks and runs great.
hooptie watches hmm rather not
Actually it probably literally is true that there are more XJ Cherokees running around than Libertys.
