Absolutely LOVE my 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser. It's not a car, it's a life companion that I could put my life on the line for when it comes to reliability. And it's incredibly fun to drive.
And (except for all the power whatsits on the Grand Wagoneer) they're DEAD SIMPLE to fix. You may spend more on gas, but you save it on repair. Especially if you start doing it yourself which is easy on something like this. You rarely need 3 elbows on one arm, or an inverted flare finnigan pin retractor set to get a job done.
I'm so sad I had to sell my college car. It was a 87 grand wagoneer. Green with the wooden panels. It wasn't perfect but gas was almost 5$ a gallon. As a struggling college kid I couldn't afford to drive it 15 miles to class. It was like 10$ every single time I drove it. Wish I would've parked it and left it. This was in 2011.
"They (the designers) weren't trying to evoke anything, they were just trying to make a capable vehicle." And that kids is what we have come to in the last 35 years, style over substance.
I've had an 80 before, 4.2 straight 6 turbo diesel w/ ~200,000 miles on. Never went wrong mechanically. All the electric windows stopped working and the tail gate didn't close easily. Other than that, perfect drive.
Nah, it was the 1HDT. The turbo diesel with a 4 speed auto. Beautiful to drive, smooth as silk for a diesel. Sounded grunty too. Seriously loved that thing. Here's a picture for you: i.imgur.com/JCxIB8U.png
I owned and drove the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Rode great, was nice. HOWEVER it had like a 12 gal gas tank and got about 12 miles to the gallon. I was always on the hunt for a gas station.
@yamahonkawazuki What a wonderful feature! They think of everything, don't they? ... ... I'm _kidding._ No disrespect to the Jeep either, don't take everything so seriously. :)
So amazing that I went out and bought 2 77' Jeep Cherokee Chiefs and a 83' Jeep Wagoneer Limited. couldn't help myself. So comfortable to drive. My wife says "Thanks Alot" LOL
Plus, now days people need gizmos and gadgets to entertain them while driving, you know, because driving isn't distracting enough with all of the other people on the road getting in MY way and interupting MY time updating MY facebook status on MY way to the health food store. The nerve of some people, don't they know I have things to do?! Besides, more electronics=complete nightmare if just 1 wire rubs a bare spot in itself, 50 things quit working.
Mark Keller Actually, it's "over engineering" that's made cars far more reliable than they used to be. In the 70s and 80s even a three year old car needed repairs, sometimes major. There was no such thing as sealed transmissions or 100k mile tuneups. Carburetors were terribly inefficient and mechanical fuel, oil, and water pumps broke all the time. And don't get me started about starters 😉. I love old cars but I wouldn't trade today's technology for the old hassles. No way.
TrollBuster thanks for your input... but there is no such thing as 100k OIL. and take a trip to your local junkyard and look at all of the sealed transmissions, and sealed transacted laying around. it is my contention that the old timers knew how to build things better that didn't hit you in the wallet.😎
"It works, why make three buttons?" Pretty much describes the 70 series Land Cruiser. That's why they are in high demand in markets where they are sold.
Truth, although i rented a platinum edition ford edge to run from va to colorado and back and it was actually a blast to beat on up and down pikes peak.
Except for the Tiguan, which is actually a golf...interior dimensions are the same, and it uses the same platform. The main benefit of the Tiguan is worse fuel economy, and, oh yeah, for some reason it is allowed to tow, whereas a Golf isn't allowed.
So basically everything is the same for the Tiguan, except for gear ratios... Golf is designed for acceleration, whereas Tiguan is designed for higher ratio to able to tow... thus the decline in MPG.
The big SUVs, like two shown here, are still body-on-frame trucks. Nearly all of the smaller ones are car based, as are minivans. Most of them could be more accurately described as "tall wagons" than minivans.
To summarize the content of this video, these trucks are great, because they're simple, they work, and they know what they are. They have everything you need and nothing you don't. Modern sport utility vehicles place far too much emphasis on the sport, while these are all about the utility. People appreciate the utilitarian design, and will continue to appreciate it for far longer than the sportiness of modern cars.
I have a 1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. I love it, it’s been in my family since it was brand new. I’m the second owner and I inherited it when my dad passed away. My dad gave me a choose between the Jeep and all his tools or his $700k house. I took the Jeep/tools and my brother got the house. Some think I’m crazy, but for me it wasn’t about the money. It was about all the memories I shared with my dad in his Jeep Grand Wagoneer on father/daughter trips to go backpacking or snow skiing. Can’t put a price tag of memories.
Current Toyotas are fine. In the 70's and 80's all Japanese cars rusted like nobody's business. That's why it's so significant that that one was a SoCal car. Up in the mountains you still see some of these driving around with the fenders eaten half away with rot.
Thanks for the this, nice to know they are appreciating, more people will restore them and preserve them. I have had numerous Landcruisers since they first came out. Here in Canada they were available in diesel so that is mostly what I had. I have had 2 doors and 4 doors (when the family grew to 7 plus dog.) They were insured as trucks in Canada up until my insurance agent informed me that my truck was a "sport utility vehicle" and the rate was now higher, way to go yuppies! It is unfortunate you did not test them in off-road or winter conditions, you know mud and snow, etc. That is why I owned a Landcruiser, which is aptly named. (it never was a 'sport utility vehicle', it was a 5 seater truck/van with 4 wheel drive. I don't recall ever 'Sporting" in it! Both vehicles are unique units. The Landcruiser was at home off road, but the Jeep had very little clearance and got stuck easily. I pulled many of them out with my 'Cruiser. I have also plowed through snow over the hood with my Landcruiser. The 4 wheel system in the Toyota was bullet proof and very powerful. A farmer friend once accused it of being a 4wd tractor in disguise. The Landcruiser in diesel got 30+mpg, carried 2000 lbs and could climb a tree. It would start in -40 F when nothing else would! I really miss those trucks. The Toyota FJ should have a diesel. The only thing I would add to my old "cruisers" would be air bags. The old days were the best. Bad Grandpa.
Ooo got stuck easy? Pulsed a LOT OF THEM OUT? Hmmmm. Maybe it was just a Canadian thing. Never had to PULL ANY OUT in the US. Only real problem with the full axial 4x4 with them was the vacuum 4x4 switch. Other wise a very capable 4x4. Will agree with the diesel part though.
Wrong! Cheap gas is nice, but I live in SoCal haven't seen cheap in 8 years. But I know this, just bought a 89' Cherokee 4x4 in mint Condition for $2,500, it took some looking because the market is HOT, and good ones are far and few due to the fact a new one starts at 35k. I could drop 15 grand on this for a complete rebuild bottom up, still be way under current market prices for anything close to this, O' and by the way, I own a brand new Cherokee, and I could never imagine doing to this what I have done to the 89'.
That comment that Doug made about the three horn buttons on the steering wheel made me go out to my 1983 FJ60 Lancruiser. I've never noticed that - over 250,000 miles driven in that vehicle and I never noticed that the left horn button is upside down! Sure, the interior is falling apart and there's rust around the rear window - but it still runs good and brings a smile to my face when I drive it.
Damnn look at that carpet. I'd like to drive that barefoot and feel the side of the door carpet but I bet you can get the same feeling of quietness in an X6, or even a Hilux
Brian Pytka my bad for some reason has sure the X6 was only RWD, however the type of comfort is described in the video i don't think can the recreated by any modern car...
That doesn't mean it is safe. That simply tells you that all the force was transmitted to the driver. Older cars lack air bags, crumple zones and some lack seat belts. Modern safety standards are one the large reasons for declining fatalities from car accidents.
Back in the 80's I used to take my FJ40 and ram junk yard cars for fun. Modern safety cycled the FJ40 out, as well as the land rover Defender 90. But Let me just ram what ever new 900 airbag car you are driving now, and see how that works out. Even if we both come out unscathed, only one of us is going to be driving the same vehicle to work tomorrow. ;-) Just a light tap on a bumper these days results in thousands in damages. Thats not an improvement in my book.
***** the thing is, more than likely you will not come out unscathed in a older car because of the lack of energy absorption. Energy is conserved in a closed system like a collision between two vehicles. If a car does not deform, then the deceleration of that vehicle will be the deceleration of the occupants. So an older car will either subject the occupants to the full deceleration forces which cause severe internal bleeding or they will collapse, which does absorb energy but they collapse in such a way that the driver is crushed. I do agree however that light taps are an issue in modern cars. Older cars have real bumpers that were made to bump into things
I had an 84 diesel land cruiser I bought in 1986 for 12 years. It could go anywhere and you felt like you were actually driving it. Full chassis, hand throttle - a real truck. I now have a 2008 200 series diesel which is also a great vehicle for camping and towing. Much more car like on the road and a phenomenal engine - twin turbo V8. Goes great with almost 300,000 kilometres. I plan on keeping it a long time. Both cars were made in Japan and that makes a big difference to quality.
I once had an 86 Grand Wagoneer. Drove great, Handled great, the seats where as comfortable as your home recliner. It sucked on mpg but hey on snow covered roads that thing was a tank and you could go anywhere you pointed the wheels.
@@jeffreyrigged Wiki' said that between the feds' upcoming safety requirements; which would've required a major redesign; and sales falling in the wake of the fuel crisis and recession of the First Gulf War, Chrysler probably figured why bother.
In 1986, men owned SUVs, took them off road; used them for camping; took them down the Baja to go surfing. Men. Outdoors men. Sportsmen. Real men. If you buy one of those, you can pretend that that was you. Strangers will be impressed. But if you buy a 2017 SUV, everyone will know it's for taking your kids to soccer, and hauling stuff home from Costco. That's why old ones are cool and new ones are not.
Well said Mr. Teff! I owned a 1988 JEEP Grand Wagoneer and wish like hell I hadn't sold it. I drove 50/50 Highway vs. Backwoods roads and trails of the Rapidan Wildlife Area of VA Blueridge Mountains hunting & trout fishing. Everything was just Manly in what was the start of the Politically Correct Generations to come. William ~
The reason that older SUVs (and cars) are highly sought after is that they have simpler engines (less computerization). They're easier to work on, and for some models, finding aftermarket parts or doing repairs yourself is easy and cheap. With a modern vehicle you almost always have to go to the dealer to get anything done because of all the computers and modules found in modern vehicles. Something as dumb as a headlight bulb could cost several hundreds of dollars to replace (think Cadillac) and if you have an issue with say an ABS brake system you generally have to go to the dealer to get it diagnosed and fixed because in some or many cases, it takes special diagnostic tools you can't buy off the shelf at a local auto parts store.
"Something as dumb as a headlight bulb could cost several hundreds of dollars to replace...". I know for a fact that's the case on the Acadias. The dealer has to remove the front bumper! It's a 2 man, 6 hour job. Yess! For a light bulb! $610 + change as of a year ago.
No, but you are stupid. He asked a question, I answered it. "Because you can't take a joke, that makes you salty" There was no joke, you fucking idiot.
I have an 1982 dodge ramcharger royal se (luxury edition) it has power windows power lock and electric locking hubs and air conditioning and power brakes and power steering
A cousin of mine is a mechanic, and only wants older trucks with little electronics. Too much to go wrong, and he also lives on a dirt road where it snows, so 4x4 is required
Here's Why Old SUVs Are Shooting Up in Value........because its real steel, not the cheap shit plastic of today. I understand 100% I'd much rather have my old 1984 Ford F-150's body on top of my 08' dodge rams Diesel. the new suv's bodies are made in the same chinese factory. Back then, there was no such thing as a SUV. Thats a new word.
then came the dumb ass term "cross-over".....hey, they're doing the same with boats these days. LED lighting and all kinds of BS. The little Ford Bronco from the 70's was the best damn "SUV" around. Try buying one of those in good condition cheap!!
Lol Real steel?... just like the real plastic interiors and cheap cloth of back then?. What is so good about the "real steel" bodies of back then?, and why would you prefer your old 86' on your not so old '08?.
If you don't know why one would prefer the 80's steel to today's junk, then there is no way to explain it to you. You'd have to drive the finest cars of each generation to see that they had it right from the 80's to early 90's. Before planned obsolescence became the goal of nearly all manufacturers around the globe. I drive a 1993 Mercedes S class because I want to. And the 1987 I had before it was even better in some ways. 126 chassis and 140 Chassis are both amazing. A friend has an old 92 Landcruiser. What a truck!
Just import a Lada Niva or its facelift the Chevrolet Niva from Russia. This was a super modern vehicle back in 1977, but took some compromises due to FIAT-licensed parts, which by now have been replaced by Opel and Japanese parts. Rugged little offroaders.
I Leant to drive in a manual petrol 60 series LandCruiser. I recently bought a 105 series manual diesel LandCruiser for my practical midlife crisis car to haul the family and our gear. I love the sound of the engine, manual transmission and simplicity of the car. The car though has electric mirrors, electric windows, central looking and an engine immobiliser. The engine doesn’t have a computer so it’s simpler and easier to work on if there is a problem. Also there are no emission controls so the engine can vent all it wants.
In the UK Cherokees and Grand Cherokees don't hold their value well not sure what they're like in the USA but Wranglers they hold onto their value well.
I like the points made in the video, but had to stop watching because I thought I'd throw up if I had to hear "why make 3 buttons" one more time. I'd remake the video, and use the term once after the initial point is made, then maybe once more at the conclusion.
It's an early stage recyclable car!! :D It doesn't have a park heating but if you are in the woods stranded you burn the panels to keep you warm and cosy!! :D
Shut up! - I knew it's gorgeous wood trim in a luxury dream car - when I was a kid and you not gonna ruin it for me! And black and gold Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was the best supercar in the world too. So, you should be ashamed of yourself!.. :)
I know it was 6 years ago, but I feel the gmt400 platform is so popular for all the same reasons. Old enough to be good, but new enough not to be a pain to use. I bought a grand wagoneer just like that white one, with a 360, 4x4, in 2008 for 800$. I got it running again cleaned the crud out of the interior. It turned out really nice....but i had a hard time selling it. Not even 10 years later it's worth 1000% more, in the same condition.......
Does this guy realize that the horn buttons were put in like that so when you turned the steering wheel, whichever button was closest would appear rightside up? It's not a mistake, it's not imperfect, it's genius that nobody really realizes, nor takes for granted.
c'mon man, if you crash in a ~3 ton vehicle nothing bad gonna happen to you. Those car are mede of steel and are kinda slow! Just wear your seatbelt and you are good to go ;)
what about crumple zones. you know these old russian Lada's, after a crash, with a new cars, they look like a big dent and the new car is totaled, but why? becouse of the crumple zones, In these old cars, you take all the force from the crash, and in new cars, the crumple zones absorbs the forces.
last year i rear ended a Ford Fiesta with my 1987 Pajero (lifted and with heavy duty bumpers). After that the Fiesta was disintegrated, i don't even had to replace my bumper. Both driver safe.
That's because the crumple zone on the car you hit still absorbed the impact. If you rear ended another 1987 pajero, the crash would have been more dangerous.
And I have that white Jeep grand wagoneer! My wife absolutely loves it and would not trade it for a brand new loaded SUV!!! She wanted one ever since we got married in 94 and I got it for her in 2008 I believe and now I’m 2020 I still have it plus 2 others. We love them all!!
My 97 4Runner Limited is still an awesome vehicle. One of the reasons I've kept it, rather than moving up to a younger year, is because I read that the 97 4Runner was the last year they used a truck frame as a starting point for this vehicle, and that's important to me because I use it to it's fullest, climbing unpaved roads in 4WD to the top of mountains so, once I get there, I can strap into my hang glider and launch myself off of the top for a few hours of incredible fun... and this vehicle has ALWAYS got me there. I've had to go around my share of Grand Wagoneers that just didn't have what it took to ge to the top. Once I'm back on normal roads it drives like a luxury vehicle. Comfortable, roomy, with all the amenities. Rides like a champ but could be considered slightly underpowered for high highway speeds when fully loaded with gliders on top, harnesses in the back, and 5 adult men in the front and back seats. However, I got a sticker last month and sadly it may be my last. I used to fish a lot and I'd trailer the boat around the MA, NH, and ME coast, dropping it in and picking it out of the water at different places, often multiple times a week. The salt appears to have finally caused some problems. The main one being a leak in the permanently sealed rear end. Swapping rear ends isn't all that hard, but it's something I don't want to do anymore, particularly when he whole back underside pf the vehicle has seen as much sakt and as many years as the rear end has. Don't know why I wrote so much. I guess I just really like my 4Runner and will be bummed out to have to get something else after 18 years of trouble free ownership. I doubt a newer one will be nearly as good. I didn't notice that it was hard on gas either. I think it used a tank of fuel to go from boston to rutland vermont mountains, a 5 hour round trip, plus usually 2 trips to the top of the mountains when I got there and a little local driving where I stayed. It seemed reasonable at the time.

That or people just want something simple, rugged, repairable, and reliable
I'm so sad I had to sell my college car. It was a 87 grand wagoneer. Green with the wooden panels. It wasn't perfect but gas was almost 5$ a gallon. As a struggling college kid I couldn't afford to drive it 15 miles to class. It was like 10$ every single time I drove it. Wish I would've parked it and left it. This was in 2011.
I feel your pain, i sold my 88 and regret it
You shouldve parked on it indeed. I would take this over the g63 or any Morden SUV. I love the simplicity of the design.
I feel your pain! A lot of us wish we hadn't sold "that car". Some of us, like me, didn't sell when we had the chance.

yeah, if you have never driven one. I had a Land Cruiser. Got 6-7mpg ; Head gasket blew at 240k miles. Sold it as is for almost no losses.
I've had an 80 before, 4.2 straight 6 turbo diesel w/ ~200,000 miles on. Never went wrong mechanically. All the electric windows stopped working and the tail gate didn't close easily. Other than that, perfect drive.

my fj60 gets 12 mpg on 37s 4.10 gears and 170,000 miles. wtf was wrong with yours??
Sounds like the Toyota 1HZ engine. 200.000 miles is nicely run in. That is a million mile engine.
Nah, it was the 1HDT. The turbo diesel with a 4 speed auto. Beautiful to drive, smooth as silk for a diesel. Sounded grunty too. Seriously loved that thing. Here's a picture for you:

I owned and drove the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Rode great, was nice. HOWEVER it had like a 12 gal gas tank and got about 12 miles to the gallon. I was always on the hunt for a gas station.

So amazing that I went out and bought 2 77' Jeep Cherokee Chiefs and a 83' Jeep Wagoneer Limited. couldn't help myself. So comfortable to drive. My wife says "Thanks Alot" LOL
the reason they are still on the road today is because they aren't OVER engineered plastic pieces of crap. these things WORKED😎
TrollBuster transaxles
TrollBuster Modern cars have less issues for a while, but when they become old, they suddenly start to break everywhere.
They look so much cooler than modern SUVs or soft-roaders.

Most modern SUVs are crossovers which mechanically are actually mini vans.
And they're all front wheel drive.
So why were there 3 buttons?

Toyotas are collectible from that era. If you can find a rust-free model from the South or Southwest.
"Why make 3 buttons?" DUDE I GET IT!!!!
I'm gonna start using that at work.
Nicolas Gregorianov why three buttons?
That Toyota looks pretty nice...bet it would last forever also.
A pile of rust won't last forever dude! Toyota's are RUST bucket's.
Just keep it in Outback Australia, only moisture in 100km will be your sweat.
bushpilot2001 are you fucking serious? Toyotas are the most reliable cars on the road. Id love to see what shit box you drive
Current Toyotas are fine. In the 70's and 80's all Japanese cars rusted like nobody's business. That's why it's so significant that that one was a SoCal car. Up in the mountains you still see some of these driving around with the fenders eaten half away with rot.
Seed_drill That is true
Thanks for the this, nice to know they are appreciating, more people will restore them and preserve them. I have had numerous Landcruisers since they first came out. Here in Canada they were available in diesel so that is mostly what I had. I have had 2 doors and 4 doors (when the family grew to 7 plus dog.) They were insured as trucks in Canada up until my insurance agent
informed me that my truck was a "sport utility vehicle" and the rate was now higher, way to go yuppies! It is unfortunate you
did not test them in off-road or winter conditions, you know mud and snow, etc.
Hank Henry i
"but the Jeep had very little clearance and got stuck easily."
BS
Ooo got stuck easy? Pulsed a LOT OF THEM OUT? Hmmmm. Maybe it was just a Canadian thing. Never had to PULL ANY OUT in the US. Only real problem with the full axial 4x4 with them was the vacuum 4x4 switch. Other wise a very capable 4x4. Will agree with the diesel part though.
Hey I remember that Jeep! My friends mom drove one. Mrs. White is such a nice lady.

I could drop 15 grand on this for a complete rebuild bottom up, still be way under current market prices for anything close to this, O' and by the way, I own a brand new Cherokee, and I could never imagine doing to this what I have done to the 89'.
not wrong! its been proven statistically that high gas prices increase the purchasing of more fuel efficient cars
Great video. The old SUVs have character and are unpretentious. Classics.
There's a saying in the Arabic countries : "If you wanna go into desert, take any car. If you wanna come out, take a Land Cruiser."
and then they roll them like a dumbass
That comment that Doug made about the three horn buttons on the steering wheel made me go out to my 1983 FJ60 Lancruiser. I've never noticed that - over 250,000 miles driven in that vehicle and I never noticed that the left horn button is upside down!
Sure, the interior is falling apart and there's rust around the rear window - but it still runs good and brings a smile to my face when I drive it.
Damnn look at that carpet. I'd like to drive that barefoot and feel the side of the door carpet

And when you crash, the car will collapse and you will die. Old cars are the best!
Akash Hegde lmao there's a crash test 40mph into a brick wall and the truck still looks perfect.
Even if we both come out unscathed, only one of us is going to be driving the same vehicle to work tomorrow. ;-)
Just a light tap on a bumper these days results in thousands in damages.
I love the classic wagons

Right, trucks were used for "truck activities"
Theres only 3 real suvs left. Big, body on frame, v8, and purely American. Tahoe, Yukon, escalade, the last real SUV’s
And most SUVs were still 2 doors back then (except for Suburban and Grand Wagoneer and Land Cruiser)
Well said Mr. Teff! I owned a 1988 JEEP Grand Wagoneer and wish like hell I hadn't sold it. Cars today are over engineered transportation modules.
$610 + change as of a year ago.
i used to have a 84 toyota land cruiser like that, my first car, i loved it, 2F 6 cyl engine, 5 speed and 140kph top speed in a very good day.

Nah, its because of MemberBerries.
126 chassis and 140
Chassis are both amazing. A friend has an old 92 Landcruiser. What a truck!

My great grandpa bought a new jeep every 1-2 years all his life. I can only imagine how much money in jeeps that is today if he had kept them all.

c'mon man, if you crash in a ~3 ton vehicle nothing bad gonna happen to you.
It also destroys the car in minor collisions that could be repaired otherwise. Detroit loves mandates.
That's because the crumple zone on the car you hit still absorbed the impact. If you rear ended another 1987 pajero, the crash would have been more dangerous.
My aunt and uncle in Florida have that land crusier it’s in great condition and is really beautiful
