    Hi Nick, I’m excited to see the Petrel kit come to life.
    It was nice to hear the evolution of the design.
    Be well,
    Bob

    Nick, Thanks for the in-depth usage of the different lengths. This was extremely helpful.

    I, as well, am looking forward to this series. I admit the strip built version is a bit intimidating as I would be a beginner at a project like this. Thanks Nick for your thinking and encouragement to a broader spectrum of us who have an interest.

    To add to what you said about weight (for people who don't know), a typical 12ft rotomolded rec kayak might weight around 50lbs with some around 60lbs. I have a thermoformed 12ft Eddyline and it is around 40lbs but is was twice the cost of rotomolded. S&G can be a good option for no other reason than it is easier to car top. I look forward to this series. I built my 17' Pygmy S&G around 18 years ago but have always want to build another. Maybe in a few years when my kid is older, we can build a Petrel Play together.

    Thanks for the video. It was some of your other videos that got me started on my own build. I really liked how you took the time to go through the design features of some of your boats. I would really enjoy it if you took the time to do the same with some of the other designs on your website. I'm particularly curious about the Runner design as I think it will go well with the microBootlegger that I'm building now.

      I was going to say the same thing. The design evolution commentary was very enlightening. I would really appreciate a continuation to the more recent designs right up to the latest Petrel Sport. I have been intending to build a strip built kayak as my current ones are heavier than I like loading onto the car. I've been a bit in analysis paralysis on which design to build (spoiled for choice almost), so this background would really help. Many thanks for all the effort you put into these build videos, I'm sure you'd rather be paddling than editing.

      I'm glad the design review helped.
      I am really enjoying the Runner design. It will not be my everyday boat, but for covering ground or for downwind runs it is a blast. Very fast and using the rudder in down wind surfing situations is a revelation. Lots of fun.

    I may never build the SG version, but I’m really looking forward to watching the build. I’m glad you took the time to explain the history of your designs. I was wondering what your paddling impressions were between SG and strip and you answered it well.

    Great stuff, really appreciate the comparison of your kayak designs. I've "cheated" and ordered one of Joey's composite Petral Plays. I'll still enjoy these build videos though!

    Always enjoy the scenery. Always. And you can tell Nick doesn't live in Louisiana where I live hence the gloves and wintery wear. Love CLC as well. Thanks.

    I had a chance to paddle Joy's Petrel Play (or maybe it was regular Petrel) some years back in 2-3' surf on a shallow inlet, it was fun, easy to control.

    Great video Nick. I have the kit in the larger version sitting in the garage. Unfortunately it is 25 degrees outside and not a ideal time for epoxy. I have to wait till spring. Looking forward to watching this series as Ive seen most of your videos. Done some S&G boats and a strip plank canoe but I can't wait to stain some panels and get this baby floating! Happy holidays!

    Would a hybrid build work with this model, stripped deck, plywood hull. like the wood ducks

    • @NickSchade
      @NickSchade  8 місяців тому +1

      A hybrid would be a possibility. The sheer line of the Strip Petrel Play and the S&G Petrel Play are identical, so the deck of one would fit on the hull of the other. However, I do not have one set of plans that include the strip deck and S&G hull. Right now both sets of plans would be needed

    Tried reading the name on your pogies but couldn't. They look like they fit a wooden shaft paddle much better than any I have found. Where are they from?
    Building a strip built petrel play right now. Looking forward to see how you do the rubber hatches on this one. Love my Guillemot that I built from your book a few years ago

    • @NickSchade
      @NickSchade  8 місяців тому

      The pogies are something I just picked up on Amazon. I have pogies from Mountain Surf and Snap Dragon, but neither are still available. This are by "Heytur" which I've never heard of. Not as good as my Snap Dragons because these have a slightly shorter cuff that lets in more water, but pretty comfy for $20. Here is an Amazon Associates link: amzn.to/3uNxbyI that will give me a kickback if you purchase.

    Hi Nick! Do you have any updates on 16ft Petrel Play? Did you find it nice to paddle or you do still want to make some finetuning before making the plans available or the public?

    • @NickSchade
      @NickSchade  8 місяців тому +3

      I am really happy with the 16ft Petrel Play. I think I will be calling it the Petrel "Sport". I'm currently working on finalizing the plans drawings. You can see some on-the-water footage at ua-cam.com/video/IiFTmNTdQ-0/v-deo.html

    Hi Nick, My wife has recently discovered the joy of paddling when we bought a pair of cheap root- molded kayaks for our local lakes and rivers. I wanted to go the better route and build us a pair of kayaks. I have already built a Canoecraft cedar stop Redbird canoe and love it but my wife loves the ability to single paddle a kayak. I saw the micro bootlegger and can’t decide between that and the petrel play. We may eventually take it out into big water but mostly lakes and rivers. Which would you recommend for us?

    • @NickSchade
      @NickSchade  8 місяців тому

      Bothe the Petrel Play and the microBootlegger Sport are appropriate for open water paddling. The Play will be a bit more stable, the µBootlegger a bit faster. I might lean slightly towards the µBootlegger for lakes and rivers, but it really depends on how you want to use them.

    • @dennismilton5348
      @dennismilton5348 8 місяців тому +1

      Thank you for your advice…. I was leaning toward the bootlegger myself. I’ll let you know how they turn out.
