    So far, this is my FAVORITE version of heel turn!!!
    Many thanks, Enjoying your personality and the clarity of teaching. I also enjoy the Padding factor of heel..That is alternating a knit stitch and slip stitch for a thicker heel.
    Very attractive looking and professional.
    Thank you also for the sock reference book that you refer to for guidance!

    Enjoyed watching this video. You are a good teacher. I’m on a sock knitting kick presently after not knitting socks for quite a few years. I am a very old lady who loves to knit. Knitted my first pair of socks (Argyle) when I was a Freshman in High School. Everything I was a little insecure about after such a long time, is just fine now. Thank you for your good directions. It was a pleasure to watch and listen. Good wishes to you. Pat Dunning from near Cincinnati, Ohio.

    This is the BEST tutorial on socks I have ever seen! I don't know how I missed it weeks ago when I was searching. I made my first pair with an ok free pattern and some you tube videos to get me through the heel flap and gusset. When I watched yours today I did a swatch with some worsted wt yarn - I know that's a little heavy but slipper socks will be fine. Then I went to the calculator & pure magic! I was ready to try and figure it all out , trying to find info on negative ease etc. And here YOU DID IT ALL FOR ME thank you so much. I'll certainly subscribe and will be binging your videos

    Since I sort of suck at picking up the stitches along the edge with one needle, and I'm not real good at poking my left needle in and lifting it for my right needle to work off of either (newbie here), AND since I'm a crocheter for many decades, I just use a crochet the same size as my knitting needle, pick up all the stitches (like in Tunisian crochet) and then transfer them all to my needle before knitting the next section. Whew~!! I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually, but for now ... it is what it is.

    Hi Jana - I love your podcast and videos. You are so down to earth and friendly. I have a question about socks - when decreasing back to the original stitch count, is "knit two through the back loop" the same as slip slip knit?

    • @PurlTogether
      @PurlTogether  Рік тому +1

      They are slightly different. When you slip, slip, knit, you are slipping the stitches as if to knit, so you're turning them one at a time 180 degrees and changing the orientation of the stitch on the needle. When you SSK, the stitches tend to lay flatter then then you K2tbl. I hope that helps!

    Excellent videos. I’m knitting my first pair of socks and don’t use double point needles so used magic loop as far as the heel flap, then I found your videos so was able to carry on with magic loop 😃 Now I need to find your size chart and Facebook page. As I’m in the UK, I usually decrease with slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over rather than ssk. As ssk is basically knit two together (but leaning the opposite way) does it make for a stronger stitch than k1, p1, psso?

    • @PurlTogether
      @PurlTogether  2 роки тому

      I think it's stronger, and also looks neater. Thanks for watching!

  • @judithjenkins5043

    I love your clear way of explaining it. However I am having a proble with getting my head round left leaning and right leaning on the gusset shaping as to me it is the wrong way round. On the second of the decreases it seems to me to lean left whereas the toe on that side would slope right? My brain is not working this out right. What is wrong?

    • @PurlTogether
      @PurlTogether  Рік тому

      I'm not visualizing what you're explaining very well, but the K2tog leans to the right and the SSK leans left.

    Wonderfully clear instructions. But as a beginner with the magic loop I was doing fine till I hit the gusset, when it all went haywire, and after ripping all I'd done of the gusset back to its foundations TWICE! I reverted to the trusty DPNs. I found with the magic loop I kept losing track of where the gusset edges began and ended, and those awful wriggling loops getting in the way all the time were driving me mad!

    • @PurlTogether
      @PurlTogether  4 роки тому

      For magic loop, you'll want to keep the top of the foot (instep) stitches on one half of the ML, then everything else on the other half.

    • @hermoglyph2255
      @hermoglyph2255 4 роки тому

      @@PurlTogether Ah, I see. Thanks for that - I'll try it on the other sock, which is ready for gusseting. I'm determined to give the magic loop a fair trial, but I think for a while I'll miss the clarity you get with the DPNs, with your 4 sections neatly arranged on 4 different needles... Just a matter of practice, of course!

    Hi , thanks for all socks tutorials but how to know that I'm picking the right number of stitches .

    • @PurlTogether
      @PurlTogether  4 роки тому

      You pick up one stitch on the edge of the heel flap for each "chain stitch" on the edge. So if you're heel flap is 32 rows, for example, you should have 16 stitches on the edge to pick up. Then you'll probably want to pick up an extra one in the corner to prevent a hole. Hope that helps!

    Great. I’m using four needles...so having trouble knowing which row to do decrease. Do I decrease on my knit row then purl a row then knit a row with no decrease.???? Then purl a row and on my next knit row decrease? Does that make any sense?..

    • @PurlTogether
      @PurlTogether  4 роки тому

      There is no purling since you're knitting in the round. The only time you purl is when you're knitting the heel turn and the flap back and forth. When knitting the gusset, you're alternating the decrease row with the plain knitting row.
      You might also find it helpful to watch this updated version of the gusset decreases.

    • @PurlTogether

      A couple of thing could be happening. Have you tried on the sock? Was it tight? If so you may be getting ladders because you're stretching out the stitches and maybe didn't cast on enough to begin with? I'm also linking a video here about preventing ladders

    Hi Janna, so, I was wondering where would be the best place to increase the size of the gusset? My mom has arthritis in her ankles, so knitting socks the regular way, she has a bit of an issue getting them up over her ankle. The rest of the sock fits wonderfully, but is there any way I can make it so it’s easier for her to get on over her ankle/heel? Thanks! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

      Yes, check out the newer version of this tutorial and consider making the heel flap longer, so that you are picking up more stitches for the gusset. Doing so will make the instep larger around and make the decreasing more gradual since there are more stitches. Does that make sense?

    2 questions: 1. Where can you buy a 2.25mm needle with a 40”(?) length of cord and recommended brand. I think I would prefer magic loop. I’m using a combo of DPNs and a small circular. 2. Is there a tip/ trick for pulling the yarn through when picking up stitches up the side of the heel flap? I really struggled to have it stay on the needle. I ended up using a crochet needle to pull them through. It looks so easy when you do it. Maybe I am knitting too tight? Thank you so very much for your help.

      Here are the ones I prefer. amzn.to/3dAAXOq
      Using a crochet hook is just fine if you need to. Yes, you might be knitting too tightly. Thanks for watching!

    What are those needles that you are using here? The tips seem very pointy.

      They are the Knit Picks interchangeables here: amzn.to/2SS7KG8 (affiliate link)
      Since then though, I've gotten the ChaioGoo set and I much prefer them.

    My question is, how do you keep track of the decrease rows and the even rows? Very confusing.

    • @PurlTogether
      @PurlTogether  4 роки тому

      By "reading" your knitting. You can tell the decrease row because you can see the two stitches knitted together, slanting one way or the other.

    Are the instructions for this basic sock written out anywhere? I’m trying to take notes, but if they’re already written up, I’d love to print them out. (My notes are a bit of a mess). Thank you.

    Thank you so much! Watching your videos I made my first ever knitted heel! Wow! You’re the best teacher! I’m halfway to my first sock and will still need to watch part 4 to learn to close the toes.
    I will post my first socks on instagram @lillapuppi

    This is a terrible video. You're talking too much, too fast and you aren't showing your work AT ALL. No one could possibly see what you are doing here. Terrible. I note that one woman says "best tutorial ever on knitting socks!" I am assuming that she doesn't need the video portion and listening to you is enough for her. Some people DO learn that way - but this isn't a podcast, right? Everyone has their own way of learning, and I really need to see a video, so I am giving up on your tutorials. Maybe when I am an expert I will understand you. For now,I thank you for your effort and I am moving on.
