"Morning Has Broken" ua-cam.com/video/fcYmNICnIrw/v-deo.html is actually a Christian Hymn of Thanksgiving, with text by English poet and children's author Eleanor Farjeon set to the Scottish Gaelic tune "Bunessan." It first appeared in the second edition of Songs of Praise (1931). In 1971, Yes keyboardist/composer Rick Wakeman happened to be recording his album "The Six Wives of Henry the Eighth" while Cat Stevens was in an adjacent studio working on songs for what would become "Teaser and the Firecat." Wakeman sat down and began to improvise a piano accompaniment to "Morning has Broken," which was a rough sketch of what would later become "Catherine Howard" ua-cam.com/video/XHOMoa8_yao/v-deo.html . Engineers rolled the tape, and the rest is history. Except that Wakeman would not receive due credit or royalties for his contribution until sometime after 2000.

Love Cat Stevens. His songs always touched a cord in me. Especially while I was a hitch hiking hippie. Yes I'm old on the outside but on the inside I'm still that teenager.

Gotta react to “Where Do The Children Play”, “Peace Train”, “Father and Son”, “The Wind”, “Morning Has Broken”, “The First Cut Is The Deepest”, “Moonshadow”, “Bitterblue”, “Trouble”, “If You Want To Sing Out, Song Out”, “Hard Headed Woman”, “Here Comes My Baby”, “Oh Very Young”, “Sad Lisa”, “Tuesday’s Dead”, and “Sitting”!!
+1 for On The Road To Find Out. Cat Stevens wrote so many beautiful songs, and I gravitate towards the ones with irresistible beats. I’ll add Tuesday’s Dead to that category.
Us boomers were heartbroken when he retired. He just walked away from it. He was always a spiritual sort. He sang a children's hymn called "Morning Has Broken" that is rendered so sweetly it will bring a tear of joy to your eye. You might want to follow that with "Oh Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins singers, if you haven't already.
I REALLY love bauhaus. Saw them in 98 after their 15 year break, missed them in 2005 after 7 year break and had tickets to bauhaus 2020 but cancelled because Trump
Jamel, every year on New Year's Day I make a point of listening to his song "Peace Train", to kick off another trip around the sun. It is definitely your kind of tune. Cat is all about peace & love, love & peace.
Holy cow, i have had this on vinyl since i was a little kid. Tea for the Tillerman album. What a treasure. Are you familiar with his other tunes or what all else has happened with him? And thank you. Morning has broken Peace train - its amazing! Moomshadow Where do the children play Hard headed woman Cant go wrong with any of the above.

Ah... Also from Wikipedia. Cat Stevens' recording, with a piano arrangement arranged and performed by Rick Wakeman, led to the song being known internationally. When shaping "Morning Has Broken" for recording, Stevens started with the hymn, which took around 45 seconds to sing in its basic form. Producer Paul Samwell-Smith told him he could never put something like that on an album, and that it had to be at least three minutes, though an acoustic demo of an early Stevens version lasts almost three minutes. Prior to the actual recording Stevens heard Wakeman play something in the recording booth. It was a rough sketch of what would later become "Catherine Howard". Stevens told Wakeman that he liked it and wanted something similar as the opening section, the closing section and, if possible, a middle section as well. Wakeman told Stevens he could not as it was his piece destined for a solo album, but Stevens persuaded him to adapt his composition. In 2000, Wakeman released an instrumental version of "Morning Has Broken" on an album of the same title. That same year he gave an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live in which he said he had agreed to perform on the Cat Stevens track for £10 and was "shattered" that he was omitted from the credits, adding that he never received the money either. On his return to performance as Yusuf Islam, Stevens made a payment to Wakeman and apologized for the original non-payment, which he said arose from confusion and a misunderstanding on the record label's part. On a documentary aired on British television, Wakeman stated that he felt Stevens's version of "Morning Has Broken" was a very beautiful piece of music that had brought people closer to religious truth. He expressed satisfaction in having contributed to this. Wakeman included a 3:42 version on his 2017 album of piano arrangements, Piano Portraits.
The two songs that pop into my head right away are "Morning Has Broken" and "Another Saturday Night". My parents had his greatest hits album. Those songs and this one were the ones I played.
Yeah, I totally agree with you,Jamel. This gentle song is sung in such an intimate and genuine way that it tugged on the old heart strings and I just cried. Not many songs can do that, and I honestly can’t think of any new ones that are as deeply emotional. Thanks for sharing your musical discovery tour with us, I am learning about so much new music to love ❤️.
Cat was a huge part of my childhood, thanks to my parents, and I still love his music today. If you love this, you really must hear more of his music, Father and Son, the whole Greatest Hits album is an excellent start!!
YES, Jamel! FINALLY, you got to Cat Stevens/Yusuf (I've been asking for so long). 😄 He's an amazing singer/songwriter who started in the 60's, and he's still active til today. I recommend some classics; "Peace Train", "Oh, Very Young", "Father and Son", a more recent release "Roadsinger", (about his journey in the industry after converting to Islam). And my most favorite song, "Moonshadow". There is so much more, but that's a start. Thank you so much, Jamel! ☮ out. ✌🏼
This is such a wonderfully beautiful sad song.😌 Years ago A friend of mine was leaving her husband. Nothing ugly, she just grew apart from him. He was so sweet & kind to her through the process. As she was packing the last of her things, he played this song for her. 💙
Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) has an amazing "Best of" list. He disappeared from the english charts while he was focusing on Islamic music for a while. I was glad when returned to playing his old hits.
Grew up with Cat Stevens. Thank you Jamel. May God be with you and your family. Want to say. I love your channel because you are mellow. Happy. And seem like a straight up person. It's good to get away from the wild world and relax here with you. Take care sir.
I remember taking guitar lessons when I was 7 and my father had this recording from the BBC on tape. The beginning of the show is with ‘Moonshadow’ which will forever be my favorite Cat Stevens song, def give that or ‘Miles From Nowhere’. Now I’m in my 20’s and still loving guitar and Cat songs still being some of my favorite to play!
Yes, you've finally made it to Cat Stevens! Hopefully it's just the first of many reactions. As others have suggested, do Peace Train, Moonshadow, Morning Has Broken. ❤️
Tuesday’s Dead and Changes IV. A different side of Cat, with irresistible percussion. I challenge you to sit perfectly still while listening to these two.
You mentioned Cat was cool and smooth. So true in everything he sings. It's been mentioned, but I'll give a resounding amen to Morning Has Broken. So beautiful, and one of my favorites.
Father and Son by Cat Stevens is amazing - no song as ever done such a good job of capturing a generational rift between the men in the same family. It's incredible, beautiful, and after growing in life - you can sometimes see yourself on both sides depending on where you're at. It's incredible.
I keep over 20 Cat Stevens songs on my phone, and that's roughly half the number that I probably Should have. He's one of the finest singer/songwriters of the 20th century. "The Hurt" "Trouble" "The Wind" "How Can I Tell You?" "Don't Be Shy" "Oh, Very Young" "Here Comes My Baby" "Katmandu" "The First Cut Is The Deepest" "Father and Son" "Morning Has Broken" "Moonshadow" "Where Do The Children Play?" "On The Road To Find Out" "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out" "(I Never Wanted) To Be A Star" "Daytime" "I Want To Live In A Wigwam" and "Peace Train" are ALL songs that I am confident that you will adore.
This is the sort of soul inspired music the world is missing. His poetry of lyrics are beautiful. Moonshadow is a particular favorite, and this one. Oh, Very Young One, and, Peace Train, and, If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out, and, Another Saturday Night, are all great songs. We used to sing Morning Has Broken in church, an old Anglican hymn, always at the once a month guitar service, and if we didn't have anyone on guitar, then they played Cat Stevens' singing it to lead us. The movie, Harold and Maude, used Cat Stevens for the soundtrack.
"Father and Son" and "Miles from Nowhere" are the standout songs on that album, but the entire Tea for the Tillerman album is among the few dozen albums that I only listen to in its entirety. Its simply amazing from beginning to end and is a folk classic.
There’s a reason his music was on endless repeat on so many young women’s stereos…he’s like a mythical poet who can touch your heart, break it, heal it, and enchant you, in the space of a single song. And he’s still got it❤️
Jamel, there are so many, many songs of his that you would love. Appreciate your watching this and sharing your reaction with us. "Father and Son" is amazing, the push and pull of the generations, etc. It's beautiful and heartbreaking all at once.
Great performance! Never seen it before. I grew up listening to Cat Stevens, and love his music to this day -- he still doesn't sound like anyone else. My favorites of his include: Where Do The Children Play Hard Headed Woman Sad Lisa Father and Son [all of the above from the same album as Wild World] The Wind Morning Has Broken Moonshadow Peace Train [the above 4 from the album Teaser and the Firecat] ~as well as these 3:~ Oh Very Young Another Saturday Night [originally done by the great Sam Cooke] (Remember the Days of the) Old Schoolyard I can't speak for any other live versions, however, so personally, I would recommend studio versions of the above songs, unless someone else here specifically mentions a live version that they think is great.
My favorite Cat Stevens songs have already been listed in the comments, so I'll just add my support for ""Moon-Shadow" and "Morning Has Broken." There have been few singers who are able to make their music as intimate as Cat does.
Wow I forgot how good this song is. Thank you friend for doing this reaction. The lyrics are so powerful and this was recorded in the 70's. Pure music, pure vocals. Cat Stevens is speaking to so many people.
Cat Stevens is a very special artist for me. His are some of the first songs I remember as a child and I recall singing along with them with my mother. His music was also the soundtrack to one of my favorite movies “Harold and Maude” I would suggest Moonshadow, or Where do the Children Play but it would be hard to go wrong
loved this tune. his album covers were fantastic too. he did the art work himself.this song spoke to alot of what was going on at the time in the world. Course that can speak to all times.Just seems like the world/culture was changing very rapidly at the time.
Cat Stevens is, hands down, my favorite singer/songwriter of all time. "The Wind," "Father and Son," "Lady d'Arbanville," "Can't Keep It In," "Into White," "18th Avenue." The list goes on and on! Pick any Cat Stevens song at random and it will be great!
Besides all the other stellar tracks from this great artist already mentioned in the comments, I would like to add: "Sad Lisa", "Into White", "The Wind", & the almost painfully beautiful, "How Can I Tell You".
I love so many of his songs. One of my favorites is Trouble. He wrote it about having tuberculosis. How Can I Tell You gets me every damn time. Lady D’Arbanville is great.
"Oh Very Young", "Peace Train" "Morning Has Broken", "Where Do The Children Play", "Paper White", "Tuesdays Dead", "Father And Son", "How Can I Tell You", "The First Cut Is The Deepest", "Miles From Nowhere", "Another Saturday Night", "Hard Headed Woman","The Wind"
" PEACE TRAIN" You will love! " " MORNING HAS BROKEN " is a very beautiful song!! Also "FATHER AND SON" is one of those that will get to you deep in your hut ! Your going to love these songs as I do !
Great song! Please, react to his song "Morning Has Broken." He took an old prayer and turned it into one of the most beautiful songs ever ...with the help of Rick Wakeman, the keyboardist for Yes, who also plays the incredible piano on the song. You WILL love it.
Love Cat Stevens, grew up listening to him. So excited to see you react to him. Would love to see you react to Oh Very Young by him:) Love the lines: And though your dreams may toss and turn you now They will vanish away like your daddy's best jeans Denim Blue fading up to the sky ..
As a young child my dad would play his album Tea for the Tillerman. Cat's music always put a smile of my face when I heard his music. Check out Peacetrain, Father and Son, Moonshadow, Morning has Broken, Another Saturday Night, Hard-Headed Woman, just to name a few.

Morning has broken by cat Stevens. He makes the song so peaceful.
My most favorite song of all songs.
I have awesome memories of my grandmother singing this song. She played Cat, Aaron Neville, and James Taylor every weekend morning. Peaceful vibes!

He made a children’s book from the lyrics of Peace Train 💜
Where Do the Children Play?
Where Do The Children Play is another good one by Cat. Tea For the Tillerman us a fantastic album.
Why did he use THAT title? Probably because he likes 'em young.
Another good Cat Stevens song is Father and Son.
Morning has Broken, moonshadow, and peace train are also great songs by cat stevens
Add Father and Son to that list and it would be exactly what songs I'd suggest

Peace Train, Morning has Broken, Oh, Very Young, and Moon-shadow. He melds powerful, poetic lyrics with beautiful melodies.
All excellent suggestions, Amy K! You can't go wrong with "Peace Train"!
Morning has Broken is a English church hyme for kids like our kids sing Jesus Loves Me

Oh yes!! Please do react to them
Other Cat Stevens songs to do: Peace Train, Father & Son, Oh Very Young, Morning Has Broken.

Love Cat Stevens. His songs always touched a cord in me. Especially while I was a hitch hiking hippie. Yes I'm old on the outside but on the inside I'm still that teenager.

His song " moonshadow" is great.
I've been singing "Moonshadow" to my almost-two-year-old grandson since he was born.
Good list
I second Bitterblue. I can't believe more people haven't recommended this song.
Great list, but I would also add "Lady D'Arbanville." Such an underrated song.
Finally some Cat Stevens! Please check out "Father and Son," "On the Road to Find Out" and "Peace Train" next.
i was going to suggest that also life lessons in general
+1 for On The Road To Find Out. Cat Stevens wrote so many beautiful songs, and I gravitate towards the ones with irresistible beats. I’ll add Tuesday’s Dead to that category.
One of my favorite songs back in 1971. The radio was filled with so much great music back then.

I suggest the "Yusuf/ Cat Stevens - Peace Train (live Majikat - Earth Tour 1976)" version. It's a fantastic live performance.
“Father and Son” is some heavy stuff. My son and his dad sang this together. It’s just a moving thing. “Morning Has Broken” is a favorite, too.

I had a tape back in the day with Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin and Bill Withers songs on it. Ladies loved those songs.
Yes we did... Still do ❤️
Father and Son by Cat Stevens is amazing - no song as ever done such a good job of capturing a generational rift between the men in the same family. It's incredible, beautiful, and after growing in life - you can sometimes see yourself on both sides depending on where you're at. It's incredible.
Such a beautiful song. Yusuf / cat is one of those musicians/songwriters who just gets it.
Virtually any song of his from the albums "Teaser and the Firecat" and "Tea for the Tillerman" is gold.
I love all of Cat Stevens music but the one that'll hit you the most is Father and Son
It was in the 2nd Guardians of the Galaxy..
This whole performance is worth watching. 'How Can I Tell You?' is remarkable.
And he’s still got it❤️
Two words for ya ,
Amen sister ! 😎🌻🌼🤟👌✨🌟💫☀️🪐🌕🌟🌙💛🔆🔔 magical
That’s three I guess. Hahaha oh well🇺🇸. The song shoukd have won a award tho seriously.🏆🎸🎹🎤🥁🌇🎚💿🎉🪅💛🔅
To me three Songs from him are outstanding: "Father and Son", "Morning has broken" and of course "Lady D'arbanville"
Jamel, there are so many, many songs of his that you would love. Appreciate your watching this and sharing your reaction with us. "Father and Son" is amazing, the push and pull of the generations, etc. It's beautiful and heartbreaking all at once.
Peace Train, Moonshadow, Morning has broken...are wonderful!!! Also Father and Son!!! 💞ty Jamel! 👍
That right there is what we need more of! He is so amazing.
Bro, just pick up one of his greatest hit's album's and you'll see that he has alot of great hit's
SO GLAD you've discovered Cat! One of my all-time favorite songs is: On the Road To Find Out. Love it, in addition to all the rest!
Cat Stevens every song on the " Tea for the Tillerman" but "Morning has Broken" and " Father and Son" will do . Enjoy
Great performance! Never seen it before. I grew up listening to Cat Stevens, and love his music to this day -- he still doesn't sound like anyone else. My favorites of his include:
Where Do The Children Play
Hard Headed Woman
Sad Lisa
Father and Son
[all of the above from the same album as Wild World]
The Wind
Morning Has Broken
Moonshadow
Peace Train
[the above 4 from the album Teaser and the Firecat]
~as well as these 3:~
Oh Very Young
Another Saturday Night [originally done by the great Sam Cooke]
(Remember the Days of the) Old Schoolyard
I can't speak for any other live versions, however, so personally, I would recommend studio versions of the above songs, unless someone else here specifically mentions a live version that they think is great.
This was not one of his hits, but "The Boy with the Moon and Stars on his Head" is one of my favorite Cat Stevens songs. Really beautiful.
Course that can speak to all times.Just seems like the world/culture was changing very rapidly at the time.
i can still remember when I brought his album home in the 70's, "Teaser and The Firecat". I instantly fell in love with Cat Stevens.
Thank you so much for playing Cat Stevens. It’s been so long since I’ve heard him and I always loved his music. Try “Peace Train”
I second all the Cat Stevens recommendations here. But I’m surprised more people aren’t recommending The Wind. So beautiful.
Such a beautiful voice. Love his music “ Morning has broken” is a favorite.
Great artist! Love this song
Taking me back to early high school days. Love Cat Stevens! Thank you!!!
Check out "Father and Son" or "Where do the Children Play" or anything from "Tea for the Tillerman"
Not for the channel, but just for you- Check out the movie “Harold and Maude,” soundtrack by Cat Stevens. Hearing these songs in context is amazing.
" PEACE TRAIN" You will love! "
" MORNING HAS BROKEN " is a very beautiful song!!
We used to sing this every morning in Grade 2. I found out years later that my teacher’s father was a preacher. ❤️
It will be played at my funeral. No sad songs for me, just beautiful music.
Cat Stevens is a whole new rabbit hole to dive down... So many excellent tracks!
This is a classic my man.
This was great, seeing you genuinely connect to the song and not pause it. Fantastic choice for sure
Love Cat Stevens, grew up listening to him. So excited to see you react to him. Would love to see you react to Oh Very Young by him:) Love the lines: And though your dreams may toss and turn you now
They will vanish away like your daddy's best jeans
Denim Blue fading up to the sky ..
Me n my coworkers on cue some how all started chimed into tune n all sang n vibed to this unloading shipment truck

I love Cat Stevens ‘Where do the Children Play?’, ‘Father and Son’, ‘Moonshadow’, ‘The Wind’ are a few of my favorites.
Funny, back in the day when this song came out,?I didn’t care for it. But listening to it now, I enjoyed it and it actually touched me. Thanks Jamel.
Yeah - same with me - great performance! Really sincere & from the heart
As a young child my dad would play his album Tea for the Tillerman. Cat's music always put a smile of my face when I heard his music. Check out Peacetrain, Father and Son, Moonshadow, Morning has Broken, Another Saturday Night, Hard-Headed Woman, just to name a few.
"Morning Has Broken", "Peace Train" and "Oh Very Young" are equally profound and moving as this song. His style of music speaks to your soul.
