  • Cleaning the filter on a front loader Frigidaire FTF1240FS washing machine.
This is good to do if your front loader is having drainage issues or has any old smells.

Thanks for the video. Those are channel lock pliers, made by vise grips. Vise grips is most known for their ratcheting pliers, which are colloquially called “vise grips”

This was really very helpful. Oddly enough, there was not plastic coin catcher in ours, but there was a small coin collection in the filter. What I was not prepared for was how difficult it is to loosen and replace the green things that hold the hoses on. It was hard, and very frustrating. But, it's done. I was hoping that the pump wouldn't have to work as hard as it has been, but this seems not to have made a difference. The machine is 18 years old, though. Thanks for video!

Thanks ! ! I could not believe the trash in the filter : about $1.00 in coins, 20 plastic coffee stirrers, hair, lint. There was so much it was difficult to pull the hard plastic filter tube out. Removal was fairly straightforward, replacement not so much. Use soap or silicone lube on rubber tubes ! ! ! After a half hour struggling to get the last "constant tension " hose clamp on, substituted a worm-drive hose clamp- DONE!!!!

Excellent video, thanks for your help. We had no coin trap in our model, just the boot. It had about 7 coins, 3 screwdriver bits tumbled smooth and a live .22 ammo cartridge! However, all that wasn't the problem it wouldn't pump--the pump needed to be replaced. Your video made the job easier and let me know what to expect. The only thing I would add is that hooking up a wet vac to the discharge pipe first will suck all the water out before you loosen the clamps. Even though I had a towel underneath I couldn't believe the amount of water trapped in that boot and the entire system. Great job on this, thanks!

Glad it helped! Wow, a .22 ammo, now that's something you don't see every day!

I have the exact same washer. I haven't cleaned the filter since I've owned it (~25 years).

How are you folks containing the standing water? I might have to get a new machine. 12yo. But I'm almost certain that it's a simple clog. Can't deal with it like you mentioned initially. My filter/trap needs full disassembly. My next machine will have access.

There shouldn’t be much standing water. A shopvac may help to get some out.

Use vicegrip pliers to easily remove the hose clamps. Use a bit of dish soap to grease the mating surfaces to make re-installation easier. And if you EVER need to replace the pump for this do not buy the OEM part number. Buy a LPUNI1 for half the price and just replace the pump portion and save yourself half the cost.

You’re welcome. Wife thinks I’m crazy for keeping this washer but the damn thing just won’t die. Biggest job I did was the tub seal and bearings while I was in there and even that wasn’t too bad.

My machine doesn’t have the bottom panel to unscrew…best to call a repair person?

Great helpful video. When our washer stopped draining, we tried everything till we came across your video. There was a sock and many coins and some plastic in that rubber hose. We cleaned it out. However...we just couldn't put it back on with the green clamps. That part is definitely frustrating! Any tips on how to do this?

Glad the video helped. Indeed the hose and green clamp is a bit difficult to put back on. I would recommend having a good set of grove-lock pliers or vise grips to compress the green clamps fully and then slide it on the plastic piece first. Once in place and still being held open, wiggle the hose on next, then you can bring the green clamp back over the hose and release the clamps. You can also put a tiny bit of dish soap on the hose to act as lube so that it slides on easier.
Once the hose is on, be sure to use your fingers and feel all the way around it to make sure it’s fully on before tightening it back up. You don’t want any leaks or water could end up all over your floors
