To all the guys at 1A Auto... I wanted to thank you guys for the tutorials. Today, I got up the courage and knowledge from watching these videos to replace the radiator and shocks on my 2000 Chevy S10. Replacing the radiator was really easy. The shocks were a bit of a challenge as I had to use a sawzall to hack off the nut on the top of the front shocks as they were seized up. I paid $250 for my parts and installed them for absolutely nothing as I had all the tools I needed to complete the repairs. This was the very first time in my life I've ever done something like this. Thank you all again for the videos. They provided a lot of useful information.
Thanks you guys have been saving me hundreds of dollars for simple things I can do on my own with a little vid. Appreciate it. I have a 2003 chevy s10
One thing you should add: It helps greatly if the front of the truck is raised on jackstands and that the wheels/suspension is just hanging. This allows the upper control arms to be in a position so you can better access the upper shock shaft nut. In my first attempt I used ramps but had to switch to jack stands so I could reach the upper nut.
Just got done finishing replacing my shocks on my 02 Chevy S10 Blazer and it was all thanks to this video. Thank You very much Mike and everyone at 1aauto
Mike.. I watch all your videos before doing any of my mechanical work. You always do a great job explaining details, and very clear as well. thank you for taking the time to help others like myself.
Thanks for the awesome tutorial! I was scared to do this, but thanks to you, I have the courage to take on this task. You ROCK!
Thank you for watching.

thx just the video I needed
Your videos are GREAT! I have saved so much money on not paying someone to work on my vehicles. I get all of my parts from you guys! Thanks for the help!
Good tip on removing the caps by hand. Some idiot put them BACK ON my truck with an impact, and most of them fell off within a month because they were stripped.
thanks for the video. just installed front and rear monroe shocks on my 98 s10. video was a big help. having the list of tools you have on the video helps so you dont have to go back and forth finding the right tool. FOR PEOPLE THINKING ABOUT DOING THIS AND USING JACK AND JACK STANDS ITS EASY. for the rear, use jack stands instead of screw jacks that he uses in the video to place under the leaf springs. jack the car up, place 2 jack stands under the leaf springs and VERY SLOWLY let down. NOTE; DONT LET OFF COMPLETELY! THE JACK WILL BE HOLDING 97% OF THE WEIGHT. the jack stands are just to keep the leaf springs from dropping any. ANYBODY CAN DO THIS. IT TOOK ME 1 and 1/2 HOURS. im 25 years old
I believe you are referring to the lower control arm. With the correct tools it is a moderate replacement. Without the right tools don't even try it. It is very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. I'll ad this to my list of items to shoot a video on.
Thank you! Great video. Easy to understand for one who is not an experienced mechanic. I'm going to try doing this job myself.
No problem, thanks for checking us out.
The 4WD has 3 systemsto check. First the dash switch can go bad. Second, the transfer case shift motor can stop working or the wiring can get damaged. Third the axle is actuated by vacuum so either the vacuum actuator or solenoid could get damaged or a vacuum line could get damaged or disconnected. Use a multimeter to diagnose the switch and transfer case motor. Make sure there is vacuum to the axle actuator. If you find any of those parts are bad we sell replacements on our website.
@Vacmasterthegreat Yes the process to remove the shocks on your 1991 Chevy S10 should be the same.
Shop quoted me 220$ for replacement for shocks and struts for my 97' S10... Swapping them out this weekend on my own... Great vid as usual 1A!
+Darryl Mason Thanks for watching. If any of our viewers need to make this repair on their vehicle, we carry the replacement shocks shown in this video on our website. We also offer free shipping on all orders in the lower 48 states. www.1aauto.com/1999-chevy-s10-pickup-shocks-and-struts/y-mo-c/1999-38-64?UA-cam&CTA%20Comment&ATony
Great video guide! Instead of a Sawzall, I was able to remove the rusted top nut on the shock with a nut-splitter.
So glad they made the shock design simple for these s10's
@OMARSIMENTAL It could, you may want to check the suspension pieces to see if they're worn or also if there's a possible broken spring.
You should order that specific for that vehicle. There's quite a bit to consider when dealing with spring rates, such as motor size and weight of the vehicle. The correct spring will ensure that you have a comfortable ride when going down the road.
We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows this particular repair. We'll keep this request in mind during any future repairs.
No problem, I did that kind of shocks years ago. My more recent cars had McPherson struts, require compression tool. Puny criticism, you say "bolt" while removing a "nut". Thank you for the encouragement.
Thank you for the great reply. We love to empower our customers by showing you how-to perform your own auto repairs while installing our high quality auto parts. Have a great day! 1aauto.com +Donald Ficken
Second request for control arm/coil spring replacement. I'll do that video soon. I will use a lift but not very high then use a floor jack to support and lower the control arm. Much more safe. The tall jacks can get knocked over too easily.
@PatriotsFanX9 Good Point, an S should shift on the fly, so try it in neutral. If this does work it is an indicator of a weak shift motor.
This looks far easier than I expected. Many thanks.
Changed mine out today, thanks to this tutorial. Hats off to you 1aauto!
@spelunkerd If you have a strut the shock and the coil spring will be set up as one assembly, and if it's not a strut the shock and coil spring will be separate from each other on the vehicle.
@supersanchez1991 We currently do not have an auto repair video of that particular repair. However you would need to remove the shock as shown in this video, compress the spring with a spring compressor, and unbolt some of the suspension pieces once the spring is compressed. These springs have a lot of compression and can cause serious inquiry if they're not taken out in the correct manner. You could also reference a repair manual such as a Chiltons or Haynes manual.
Thanks, Gave me an idea what i'm working with.
91 S10 Tahoe 4.3
Hi Cory, thank you for your business we appreciate it. Have a great day!
We currently do not have a video that shows this. We'll keep this in mind incase we need to do this.
Usually they're used on 4X4 applications to help keep the dirt and mud out of your shock.
Thank you for thoroughly explaining your method and reasoning. This is how a video should be made. Instant subscriber.
+Marc Johnson Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
1aauto has saved me a lot of mistakes and a bundle of cash. Keep em' coming!
Thank you for watching.
1aauto.com 888-844-3393
@dpsa98 Shocks usually will not squeak. that sounds more like a suspension bushing or ball joint.
Thank you so much for making the video, its a lot easier to do then I thought, this will definitely save me some cash.
Thank you so much 1A Auto. I have the exact same truck: 2001 Chevy S10. I am so glad I found your videos.
Thank you for visiting our auto repair channel on UA-cam.
@odrigo90 The basics should be similar. Usually there are 1 or 2 bolts at the top and 1 bolt at the bottom that hold them in place. hope this helps you out.
Thanks for watching. Have a great day ! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
@MrDeebo666 The shocks should be pretty straight forward. You may want to double check everything to see if they're mounted right.
if the bolts broke free, you will have to have the bracket welded either with a new bracket or with the old one if it is still in good condition.
@bosommm You have a 4x4 with torsion bar "springs" You can adjust them. I do not have a video specifically for this.
Omg this is way easier than I imagined. I thought you had to take the whole strut apart and compress the spring
@Guerreroville We currently do not have a shock replacement video on a 1977 Monte Carlo. However the basics may be similar on that vehicle.
Thanks for share your knowledge, you really inspire me, can you do a pedal brake replacement on a S 10...... Tnx.
I need to replace front shocks on my 2003 s10 pickup. Thanks - good video!
+Robert Aakre Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
@changomoreno13 You may not have to if you can get to the top mount OK and it is not rusted.
@perezeddie77 The basics should be similar. Usually there are 1 or 2 bolts at the top and 1 bolt at the bottom that hold them in place. hope this helps you out.
If there's a check engine light on you may want to run the code. It would help to point you in a direction.
@DZEyoyo123 Your Grand Marquis is a different make and model, so the procedure would be different. At the currrent time we do not have a video of the Grand Marquis shock installation.
I did this job and had one hell of a time because of those clips that hold in the bottom bolts. They broke and the bolts would not come out, they would just spin. There was no way to hold the clip to get the bolt off. It was extremely frustrating. I had to go out and buy a cutter.
If you are dealing with rust, you will not be able to do this job without a cutter to get the bolts out if those clips break, and will need new bolts and clips. I was doing the job on the ground and not strong enough to push and hold the strut in place, so I used a car jack to hold it in place while I put the bolts in.
@tweed187187 No problem at all, we're glad to help out our customers ...anytime!
if you need any parts check out our website 1aauto.com We carry a ton of great repair parts for your 99 Jimmy. All of our parts include FREE SHIPPING too.
@macwhite4265 - It is very similar on a Tahoe. 2wd vs 4wd will make a slight difference, but it is still fairly easy & straightforward to do.
Sorry, I didn't see it. Thanks for the videos. They are very clear and useful. Keep doing what you're doing.
Your awesome very helpful. I always watch your videos. Their the best out there
Not sure what year your S10 is but on some years you need to lift the motor up to sneak the pan out in order to replace the gasket.
Very helpful
Like how he was calling the nuts bolts
You may want to get them specific for that application.
I didn't know it was so easy for this truck, good design for simple maintenance thanks GM. & Awesome video!
Thank you for the feedback! +George Solo
@TweekinE The process should be the same on your 2001 GMC Jimmy. Hope this helps you out.
You may want to contact the manufacturer of the kit, to see if they recommend shorter sway bar links.
Wow. I didn't realize how easy it was to replace the shocks on a truck. I'm tempted to buy some new shocks and install them myself to save some money as my truck is in need of a new set.
+GrnArrow092 this is basically the easiest thing you can do next to changing oil. ive worked on cars ~10 years, but check facebook before doing anything new.. and uh.. yea. i could walk my mom through doing this over the phone.
Sean Barmettler This is something I never thought I would be able to do myself until I did it. I've never done any kind of mechanical work on a vehicle before. It felt real good to know I can do it myself.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I was looking on how to do this but no one seems to have a Tahoe with the coil around the damn shock. Even rented a spring compressor for it but was sure that the vids I watched were just not right...thank you guys!
Thank you for watching!
888-844-3393
Seems easy. Love this...my car has struts but ill do my truck without a thought thanks to your video. How bout oil pan or seal leaks?
Thank you so much for this video! It helped me to change my worn out shocks on my s10!!
Thanks so much for saving me a lot of money.made this much easier for this "back yard"mechanic....
Thank you for watching. Please let us know how the repair comes out!
1aauto.com 888-844-3393
TO engage 4Hi you actually need to be moving. Only when you want to engage 4Lo you need to be in neutral.
If they're worn, it wouldn't hurt to put some new ones in. If may also fix the issue, if that's the culprit.
@tweed187187 HI this video will show you how to do the front shocks on your 99 GMC Jimmy, they are the same, and this video will show you how to do the rear shocks.Hope this helps you out.ua-cam.com/users/1aauto?feature=mhee#p/search/26/NwvhT78juHI
Great video. One thing different I did was to double nut two separate nuts to loosen the top nut. You can get a lot better bite that way.
+Donald Ulrich You could use a lock washer to hold them in place. Thanks for watching. If any of our viewers needs to make this repair we carry the part shown in this video on our website. Here's a link to them www.1aauto.com/1A/shocks_struts/Chevy/S10-Pickup/-/-/1999?UA-cam&CTA%20Comment&ATony
@black29silvert Mike shows you how to over come this in the video when he says "Don't be afraid of the sawzall"
Thank you for taking the time to make this and many other videos I have watched on your channel. It is nice to see what kind of animal you are about to attack prior to the altercation. lol Thanks again
thanks for helping me out and you just cleared up my mind I'm going to do it myself
If you can easily remove the nut, then you can just use a rachet or a wrench on it.
Depending on how tight the motor is, you may have to lift the motor a bit to service the pan gasket. If you have a Haynes manual it should show you what needs to be done to fix the gasket. We sell Haynes repair manuals on out website 1aauto.com
Feel around and find the hole 5:58 LOL Great job love the vids
+T O Double D Thank you for your feedback!
Thanks for watching. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Excellent video. I was told I needed a torch to do this. It will be a breeze now.
Wow this looks very easy to do
I think you're referring to the little clips that have an extrusion through which the bolts thread up through. I broke one of these clips doing this job for my dad this weekend. So I cut the head of the bolt off cuz it wouldn't come out and just replaced the bolt with a new bolt, nut, and locking washer. This'll only work if the holes in that bracket are still intact.
@nebur5151 Not my area of expertise but yes I would imagine that you would have to change out the shocks to lower it 4-6.
I put Lock-tite on all shock mounting bolts. I have had them work loose before.
thanks to you I learned something new today...
Thank you that looks much easier than I thought
I made sure to put it all up in there. Thanks.
Thanks for checking us out. 1aauto.com +Ulises Juarez
Yes it should be the same. Thanks for watching. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Yes, exactly.
You may want to call the manufacturer of the lift to see what they recommend.
Dam guy why I didn't see your video first?, you make things so easy and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thanks I subscribe to the channel.
+Wilfredo Gonzalez Thank you for the great reply. We love to empower our customers by showing you how-to perform your own auto repairs while installing our high quality auto parts. Have a great day! 1aauto.com
Great video! Really not any different than my 82 S-10, except that my 01 blazer has coil-overs instead of torsion bars. Saved me hundreds again!
+joe odekerken Thank you for the great reply. We love to empower our customers by showing you how-to perform your own auto repairs while installing our high quality auto parts. Have a great day! 1aauto.com
@conkernero A 97 S10 2WD yes.
Tks for the insight, greatly appreciated...Hopefully my shock change goes just as smoothly for my 2008 Ford Ranger FX4.
Cheers,
John
Thanks for the vid gonna do my shocks soon an thought I had to take the ball joints off and pull the spring off
This would be similar since the truck in the video is 2WD as well.
If you can get it to fit in there, you should be able to.
I guess I'm a little confused by the description of shocks inside loaded struts for this vehicle. How do you tell on inspection if your vehicle has shocks or struts? Shock replacement seems easy, but I wouldn't want to loosen the wrong nut under tension.
You are awesome, Thank god for UA-cam
Jimmy Horace Thanks for the kind words. We're glad you liked it. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Quick heads up guys don't use a breaker bar to tighten your lug nuts use a torque wrench so you can get the right tightness for the lug nuts and watch using a jig saw to cut the the top of the shock oil tends to get in a lot of places on the truck especially if the shock is leaking it can be very flammable
+Armed soldier 1 That's all very true. Thanks for posting!
If it isn't the same it should be very similar. Here's a video that we also did on the rear shocks. Hope this helps you out. .ua-cam.com/video/NwvhT78juHI/v-deo.html&feature=plcp&context=C4441ac8VDvjVQa1PpcFMA78OAVN6CQAjG33fzZmKlTq3sA7og_og%3D
