Billions are allocated each year to provide shelter for those who want shelter (it’s complicated because many would rather be left alone and remain outdoors)
Migrants flooding communities or actual flood waters flooding communities, doing nothing is not an option - money has to be spent. The goal is to allocate money, time, and resources to prevent the flood from happening in the first place.
It's what is referred to as "foreign aid", "humanitarian aid" which our government disperses to other countries , who take it, and do nothing to stop this problem. @@user-wv9pw9tq1g

NYC's right to shelter law was created to help New Yorkers who were derelict alcoholics living on the Bowery. The law was not written for illegal aliens. Change the law now. As a citizen I am outraged that this is ongoing.

There is a massive difference between illegal and legal immigration
100 %. But some people who are not called illegal migrants are really illegal migrants. If for example you're leaving your country because you're being oppressed you're supposed to go to the closest border not travel country to country to get to the United States and you can get welfare payments. So many of these people who are not considered illegal are.

We had a 11 year decline in southern border crossing to the lowest point in 50 years prior to Trump and his polices. By 2019 Trumps policies doubled the number of people crossing the southern border to 977,000. He only saw a reduction for the first 9 months of 2020 due to covid, before it went back to a 20 year monthly high in October of 2020. It has remained a 20 year high and increasing ever since under Trumps failed policies and Title 42.
Title 42 suspended title 8 laws and authority use to deter and penalize illegal border crossing. The Right was using it to undermine legal asylum under 8 US code 1158. It also suspended 8 US code 1325; the misdemeanor that carries a civil penalty for crossing the border illegally. And 8 US code 1326; stiffer penalties for crossing the border after deportation
That left out any legal penalty or deterrent for those crossing and stopped legal asylum, with few exceptions under title 42. Makes it difficult to enforce immigration laws when Republicans are fighting in court to undermine our legal enforcement. With title 42 suspending enforcement many immigrants re-crossed multiple times causing apprehension numbers to be inflated. The current rate of multiple returns was about 40% of border crossers.

There was a group of Venezuelans taken to a shelter and turned around and got back on the bus saying the conditions were unacceptable and they'd rather go home. I think if I came from a place like Venezuela I'd be glad to sleep on concrete if I was warm and dry.

This is a policy that has been in place since the 1970's. This Mayor tried to have it overturned but was outvoted by the City Council. States like Arizona and Texas get $Billions each year to provide for migrants and asylum seekers. Since those states aren't doing the job they get money for, it's more than reasonable to take all it back (plus damages, fines, interest, and indemities) and give it to places that are doing the job those 2 states are being paid to do.

New York also needs to stop thinking they are shouldering the entire burden. It has been going on in Texas forever and effects lots of cities that dont get the attention on the news. Federal funding has never been sent to Texas birder towns as far as i know. I guess the plan was to get a ton of funding from the federal government so migrants become an industry like homelessness where nothing gets solved and we all just oay for into eternity. Trump is hard to listen to and could choose different language but MSNBC is delusional if they think treating tax payers like they are the problem is going to do anything but enrage them. This issue is a problem for most Americans and we have compassion but also don't want to see our country commit suicide.

My grandparents immigrated from Ireland in the 1930’s. No one gave them anything, no housing no food no money. They struggled and it was hard. If we are comparing to Ellis island remember, back then, they got no handouts at all.

I am a staunch liberal, but the simple fact is that if it is too easy and comfortable or perceived as such to migrate illegally to NYC then the city would become overrun. Not what happened. It was after the election that migrants began to show up in NYC sent by the Governor of Florida. Mayor Adams tried to have the policy overturned but the City Council vetoed him. The policy was created in the 1970's by Mayor Koch (D) and supported by both Mayor Giuliani (R) and Bloomberg (R.). Adams was asked what he was going to do at a press conference after he found out that he couldn't reverse this policy and he said "Welcome them" which he has no choice but to do just that.
@Nyame-ama apparently you don't watch the news. Last year Adam's was on NYC one news claiming all immigrants are welcome in NYC since it is a sanctuary city. Now he is eating his words. I voted for him last elections, not making that mistake twice. He is part of the problem.
So if America ends up becoming a sanctuary city for the entire world, whats gonna be the outcome of that. I believe in helping people who need it but its strange that so many people who don't speak the language, little interest in assimilating really would want to move here. There are many stable countries in South and Latin America and I think the money the US is spending on temporary shelter could be re-allocated to those nations. It would ease the burden with the influx of migrants, migrants would benefit by not having to travel so far, they would be in an environment thats familiar with easier communication. But I see whats happening here, its cause and effect. A lot of these migrants see the best of America through entertainment and social media. They assume the streets are covered in gold and resources are here in abundance. The nice neighborhoods, clean streets, grocery stores with a large selection of fresh fruits, vegetables and different merchandise. But the sad reality there is no patriotism, loyalty or appreciation in wanting to come here. For many, its the American dream of what I can get out of the system for many of these migrants. At the same time, America is facing an aging population in the coming years and with many born Americans wanting to do white collar jobs we are gonna be faced with a crisis. So, we do need people who will do the work that many Americans no longer want to do: milk cows, pick fruits and vegetables, slaughter chickens. The problem is, a lot of these new migrants I'm suspecting don't want these jobs either. And thats the bigger problem. Many are coming here for bling, iPhone 15 Pro Max and TikTok.

This is happening in Canada right now too. I heard they are spending 600+ million to house and feed refugee migrants and asylum seekers. My heart feels for people fleeing bad situations but I’m in my late 30’s and back living with my mom because I can’t find an affordable place to live, and I’m having a hard time finding a job that pays more to afford to live on my own. I’ve lived here all my life and am now looking to leave.

False equivalency. Canada doesn't have millions of undocumented migrants illegally entering the country on foot each year. The vast majority of new Canadians arrive in the country by aeroplane with all the necessary documentation after their applications have been approved in their country of origin. Only a miniscule number of migrants enter Canada illegally and most of those that do so have the U.S. as their ultimate destination.
It is true, however, that Canada's population is growing faster than ever in its history and is currently the country with the highest percentage of landed immigrants per capita in the world. The year 2023 has been a record-busting year with an immigration level of roughly 525,000 new permanent residents, surpassing the target of 465,000, which is considerably more than the much-higher immigration target of 500,000 set for 2025.

You all love to take things out of context. The Mayor tried to get the policy overturned. The City Council wouldn't let him. When asked at a press conference what he would do since he couldn't get rid of the policy, the Mayor said "welcome them." He didn't have much of a choice at that point. Mayor Bloomberg and Giuliani both Republicans, not only supported this policy which has bee around since the late1970's, but they reinforced it.

Before they were bringing people over from all over Europe. If you had no land or no job, the agents say go to America. Then you work many years in factories to repay that ticket. There was a whole large infrastructure built in Europe to process people: hospitals to check health, accommodation, catering etc. Of course you had then second check of health at Ellis island and then you knew that you made it.

I can say in my lifetime it took me years for me to get to the status where I am at. I am at a good place in my life, where I don't have to worry about financial issues. I own my home, have a great job, but it didn't happen overnight. We have US citizens that are struggling and living from paycheck to paycheck, and they have been here for years trying to live a decent life and still trying to live a decent life. I don't understand how the migrants believe they can come live in the US and life will be so easy for them, when the majority of the migrants don't speak English.

If they are having food scarcity issues then why are they constantly complaining about the food they receive? My family has been poor and we never complained about what was given. We are grateful for whatever we got. It is unrealistic to keep giving them this much aide, migrants never got assistance before, why now? And the amount we give doesn't seem excessive?? We went from giving zero help to giving them everything. It can't be humane for U.S citizens to sleep on the streets either if it's inhumane for migrants to sleep on the streets.
