I love this old house, my dad used to watch it all the time when I was really little (he used to work as a Mason and then ended up working for sears) my father is deceased and I'm now 25 and married but I love this old house and have aalways had respect for those in the trades
Great comment Michelle. My grandfather was a master builder and died before I was born but passed some of skills down the line to my late Dad and then on to me. I cannot confess to being a kid when watching TOH but I have seen every episode from every season - sometimes with my daughter Michelle sitting on my knee ! Stay safe.
*WOW* !! *EVERYONE from TOH AND Mike Rowe* !! *GREAT combo* !! *Yes, we do NEED someone helping with the skills gap* !! *Can NOT wait for rest of this build* !! #ThisOldHouse
It's like every home improvement show at this point. "We're operating on a budget here, but we're also doubling the home's square footage." I know people have different financial situations and concepts about what a lot or a little money is, but dang, even I took pause when I saw that garage appear.
Must be nice to get a free house from your parents, and then have the money to double it in size. Honestly, the house doesn't look all that bad the way it is.
@@mrpiccolo23 It's quite small, old and weirdly planned (see the old fireplace). They want an in-law/granny suite for the future, so they have to put money in - it'll be worth it.
Great idea posting this to UA-cam! I never really knew any different growing up, my dad fixed everything around the house including the cars, we could not afford contractors or mechanics. But you would never know how much I learned by holding a flashlight or grabbing a tool from the tool box. Looking forward to this series.
The apprenticeship program is awesome! They need to bring back that sort of stuff in school too. I been watching this old house for as long as they been on TV up until 2017. I've missed it since I haven't had TV since March 2017; these on UA-cam are really a treat! I don't have internet at home but I do have hotspot on phone so I watch on my computer on hotspot. I wish I had those old windows they pulled out of the garage, I want to build a greenhouse using many old windows.
Proud of you all for the years on TV and the distribution of your vast knowledge. I think I have seen most all episodes and enjoy revisiting them online. Thanks
It gave me a chill knowing Mike is safe and sound. I get through my college years watching Mike in my dorm room. Glad to see him still got his funny moments
When you see a worker putting on a respirator, safety glasses, white jumpsuit and gloves that means one thing. Abatement. Lead, asbestos, and/or mold. That is going to eat up a percentage of the budget for sure. However, with two little kids, you need to be sure that they can grow up healthy.
Just fantastic! TOH was very inspiring to me when I was becoming a Journey person 35 yrs ago, and now have 25 yrs in set building in the film industry. Thanks TOH!
I'm so glad to see young people learning construction, I've been working in construction for 34 years and i didn't see younger people get in and at the same time i was watching the older guys retiring, I'm afraid there is more retiring than getting started
Wow, Roger is looking great, glad too see him back. And I’m so pumped there’s more episodes. Love this show. Wish I could get them too come too Ohio and do my place. It’s got so much potential.
I’d love to save more houses. I love them and the history, and the families that have lived there. I’m not as young anymore, but I’m still active and working on my old house everyday.
this will be far more pedestrian than the last season's mid-century modern. their expansions are all living spaces and their HVAC would've needed to be updated anyway even without any renovation at all.
@@robgeach8105 12:21 I'd hardly call their plans budget-minded though, they're basically adding another building, removing walls and ALSO building out one room on each side, aside from other "updates"
@@austinhamann704 you realize when people say "removing walls is expensive" they're talking $5-10k for a beam most of the time, not a new BMW. it's the same for expansion framing. so long as they only put new finishes in new expansions you can make a tiny house 2500sqft for an extremely cheap 15 year mortgage.
It kills me to see the garage demolished like that! My garage doors are old, and that one is WAY prettier, the regualr door is nice, and I need one for my garage, and the roofing under the shingles, are really nice, and mine are all messed up from the old owners using old/used not matching, types of wood. If this was close, I would have happily removed all of these things, and helped clean up!! We're in the middle of a renovation, and are happy to use someones old stuff!
What a beautifully done ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxYGamVaHfdHiPlAQaLa7zkwR02OKpGYDU ! The instructions and the photographs are brilliant. It is thorough and genuinely informative. Ryan got another winner! No one does it better!
I think this show is great, but I wish they worked with people who don't have tons of money. Even this family's "limited budget" is pretty big if they're doubling the house AND building a second house essentially in the backyard. Also, if they want people to work in the trades, they better start paying trades people $22+/hr minimum.
"He gets the kids, you get stuck with me." - Kevin always making some jokes that are borderline sexual innuendo! There's an episode in S40 where a chef is demonstrating an induction cooktop to the woman homeowner. The chef says he doesnt like to break up the pasta noodles when cooking. Kevin says, 'Who doesn't like a long noodle?!' and the woman bursts into laughter. Hah!
Question: 11:47 garage as-is 12:22 future garage, ADU "granny flat" above for his parents to live in during summer. WHY build something for in-laws (who will age) above a garage, also necessitating the driveway work Roger and Kevin talk about with a retaining wall? Where Roger stands at 18:32, why not have that as the limit for a ONE LEVEL two car garage (as planned) with granny flat BEHIND? That area doesn't scream "heavily used part of yard" to me 🤷♂️
Fireplace was likely in corner of room BEFORE stairs to second floor were moved to that location to free-up original stairway location or when second floor was added in midlife of home.
Is there a way to view even more TOH content? I absolutely love the show and would be overjoyed to see an hour a day, every day. It would be super cool if they spent a bit more time on showing the blueprints of each project as well. I really miss Norm, partly because his absence makes me acutely aware of my own aging. It seems like yesterday when I watched the first episodes of the Dorchester project. I'd like to file a complaint against my father for abuse, father time that is. 😉
One of my favorite seasons, but would have done the house differently. Yet not my house. Theirs to enjoy. One thing I always hate to see is demolishing of a project like the garage, Put a feeler out for someone looking for wood, trim, etc. And some people would gladly come in and take it and recycle it elsewhere. (if this was not the case here)
When I took down my old garage, I took it down, piece by piece. Then I hooked a tow rope to the framing and my F150, and pulled the skeleton down. That was 40 years ago. Built the replacement by myself. Good old days.
Overlaying the house with the blueprint visual is awesome. Please continue doing so, lol.
This Old House and Mike Rowe is the ultimate combination!!
It's like the nexus of the trades universe!

I was impressed with the recent "Extreme Makeovers" but it's good to see TOH has returned to their WGBH roots and normal-people budgets.
A step in the right direction : training, transferable skills, jobs, union.

They have a “limited budget”.. but paid $25k just for a rain runoff system for their new house extension 🤔
