As a Canadian, I was very shocked moving to America and finding out pancake syrup was not maple syrup😬
I’m confused. I’m from Northern Virginia and we just call it ‘maple syrup’. My father is from the south and he labels it ‘maple syrup’. My gram is from Pennsylvania and calls it maple syrup. And my gramps is from Queens, NY and he calls it Maple Syrup. I’ve never seen an American label it “pancake syrup”. I may just be misunderstanding your statement though.
@@sophiaspaulding3310 maple syrup is different than pancake syrup. I thought the syrup they put in pancakes like in ihop, Denny's or even in the supermarket was maple syrup. Example, aunt Jemima syrup is not maple syrup. I didn't know that. I just assumed everybody used maple syrup. I hope that cleared up any misunderstandings.

There's very little difference. You basically have to take the extremes (southern American vs Vancouver ie JJ McCullough) to hear any difference

I've lived in Calgary for pretty much my whole life and like you said, for the most part we speak with a standard North American accent, like what you might hear on the news or in most TV shows. I feel like the "Canadian" accent that people often point out usually comes from people who live in less populated areas, older generations, or from families with a long history in Canada. And of course, there are regional accents, like in Newfoundland for example.
Wait till you hear Na Newfie accent. Lived in Ontario for 20+ years and i find them confusing as fuck to understand.
An easy way to differentiate is how they pronounce certain words. Canadians (not all, but most I've heard) use the British pronunciation of certain words. For example, words like process and project. Americans pronounce it praw-cess and praw-ject, whereas Canadians pronounce them the British way, pro-cess/pro-ject. Other words that Canadians often pronounce the British way are against (a-GAINst), whereas Americans pronounce it aGENst. Pasta...Americans pronounce it pah-sta whereas Canadians often pronounce it pass-ta. A couple more obvious ones are how they pronounce their o's, so many Canadians pronounce sorry as "so-rry", about "a-boat", etc. There are many other examples, but as others have stated, it differs depending on the region.

The permanent winter stereotype is annoying. Especially during a 40C + heatwave in Quebec. We get from 40 to -40 in the same year lol

And when he said the woman he met said "Quebec people are dumb for not speaking English," that's hilarious because many people form Quebec do speak English/bilingual and most English Canadians only speak English, so they're basically saying they are dumb themselves.
I went in Alberta when I was young and only spoke French then. I asked the lady where the TOILETS were. She answered "Sorry, I don't speak FROG!". I feel that.

They do, but they call them Europeans.
I've never heard a single Canadian say "oot" or "aboot"; that's an American joke. It is based on something though, since many Canadians do have a specific pronunciation of the "ou" sound. In linguistics it even has a name: Canadian raising (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_raising)
It's not unique to Canada, some dialects across the border also have it, but it's pretty widespread in Canada.
It's more of a "oat" as in "boat." It's common here in the Maritimes. But when spoken fast, it can sound like "oot."
@@thecaynuck4694 I guess it depends on where it is spoken as well. Here in Ontario, I have never heard anyone pronounce anything differently that what is considered the "standard" American accent.
@@samraosmanovska4077 yeah in other places in canada the accent is a bit thicker, my cousin moved to alberta for 8 years once and the first time he came back he had a way different accent then he lost it over time living here.

One of the stereotypes at least here in BC is that the reason why stores close so early and people are in bed early is because they hit the Grouse at 7 AM. That we all hike and we hit the outdoors here and it's not hard to see why.
(Also BC means Bring Cash is another stereotype we hear here from Canadians coming over here)
I grew up in Whatcom, "Bring Cash" is accurate, as if Bellingham isn't overpriced as it is. Every local knows to top off the tank in Blaine as well , Petro Can gas pumps not only take credit cards, there is also a slot to insert the deed to your house.

I visited Canada 3,4 times and I don’t think the people are overly nice, they are just like every other place in my opinion…
The stereotype about Canadians being polite and nice usually only extends to other white people from USA, Western Europe, Australia from my experience.

In southern Ontario we have less than four months of cold snowy weather. It is always a green Christmas now and the bad weather starts in January. By March it rarely snows and the temperature hovers around 32 F.
As a boomer I can tell you when I was a kid nobody knew about poutine. The fast food industry real took off in the 70's. We almost always had home cooked food.

It’s funny how Canadians, especially on the Internet, try to act like they’re so different than Americans, but if this video is accurate then Canadians are just more high-pitched, nasally, and mellow Americans. Lol.
we are really different from Americans in a lot of way we think.. Maybe a bit similar to Californian and New england people.
Canadians and Americans are more similar to each other than any other nation, we even have some shared history. BUT, we also are two UNIQUE countries, with some very unique differences in certain key areas like health care, gun control, military and so on … we are similar but not identical… just as Norwegians, Danes, and Swedes, have many similarities and also some key differences… No one country or nation is ever a monolith.

Before i have never heard any Canadian say eh. But when i was schooling in UofA, I'm from Toronto. I was talking to my roommate, who is also from Toronto and I noticed she started saying eh in our 3rd year. I told her, you have integrated to well in Edmonton.

particularly i hate the superficiality of the west coast more so the Hollywood west coast then the northern west coast, the southern states with a lot of racism and more so conservative views like abortion rights laws and heavy religious god loving Americans that seem more racist then god loving and hyper patriots that talk down other countries to let you know america is better. But most Canadians hate the Americans we see on the news which is a poor representation of every American and we are aware that we only see and know what what the media shows which tends to be the bad apples.

It's hilarious, every Canadian I've ever seen vehemently denies "oot and aboot" but that really is what their accent makes it sound like when they say those words. It's subtle, and not so over-the-top as the spelling implies (maybe more like oat and aboat), but that is the #1 single biggest way to identify a Canadian - their accent on words with the 'ou' sound. Also like someone else said, they will use the british pronunciations and spellings of certain words while speaking in what mostly sounds like a broadly American midwestern accent.
I can agree with that, I used to play with these American kids online on my PS4, pretty American kids coming from a state like Ohio, anyways they were pretty cool but they would always ask me questions about Canada and even said that I had an accent a couple times, I didn’t really notice it but when I really focused on it I did realize some of the words I said had an accent. Ooot and aboot just doesn’t happen but I can see that we are pretty hard on the “ou” sound.
@@AlexanderNathan2346 like I said, I think "oot and aboot" is a little bit of an overstatement; I really think "oat and aboat" captures the sound better, it's not quite as exaggerated as the former implies. You really do have to listen pretty close to tell a Canadian from a midwestern American but the difference is there and is noticeable to those who aren't Canadian, but of course it's hard for y'all to notice it - it's your everyday speech after all, it just sounds normal to you! I enjoy all these regional dialect and accent differences, it really adds a lot of character in my opinion. Cheers

Canadians are polite, but not nice. They're actually quite unfriendly and reserved. Living here is very hard if you are a social person or like genuine intimacy. Especially in Quebec.

Quebec is friendlier than people give it credit for. You probably live in a big city, because people are less friendly in cities due to the stressful lifestyle.

@@thecaynuck4694 I lived in Montreal for 23 years of my life. The "unlucky" excuse is really tired. People in New York are honest, which startles Canadians. Though, there are friendlier places than New York.
As an expat Canadian, I will say that the biggest myth is "free" healthcare. Tax freedom day in Canada in around mid June. Almost half of your income goes to taxes. So yeah you are paying for healthcare.

my big annoyance with ontario stereotypes is that people immediately think you're from the gta if you say you're from ontario. ontario is a HUGE province. it's over 1 million square km, and while a lot of that is uninhabitable in the north, there's still a lot that still is. when i lived in bc i used to tell people that the distance from my hometown to toronto is about the same distance as my hometown to bc and it blew their minds.

I drove through Saskatchewan on my way to Calgary. I swear, it felt like my car was on a treadmill in the middle of an unedited world. The people were cool though.
We definitely don't say oot and aboot but we do say t'boot as in "in addition to that". At least in Ontario if we're complaining about a series of things and then we have that last clincher we'll say then blah blah blah t'boot. It's used like a sarcastic "icing on the cake". I think Americans have heard us say this and misunderstand the meaning of the term.

Try e Canadian accent is so easy to spot. The company I work for has quite a few Canadians that work here and I was able to tell who they all were by their accent.

You definitely should! Make sure you get your passport beforehand. I'm not sure if one NEEDs it to enter Canada, but you surely will NEED it to return to the States!
Here are my answers: 1. Canadians are extremely polite: True for the most part. Manors are really important in Canada and people will go out of their way to help you most of the time. 2: Canadians live in the middle of nowhere and men are lumberjacks: Living out in middle of nowhere can sometimes be true when you have the second largest country in the world with only a 35 million population this does happen alot. As far as Lumberjacks no. The forestry industry is huge in Canada a major industry in Canada but most people are not lumberjacks. 3: Canadians say "eh" "oot" and "aboot", people do say eh alot but the other two no. I think oot and aboot is for mostly french speaking Canadians where English is their second language. I never heard a person that English is their first language say oot or aboot. 4: Canada is freezing cold all the time, False, Canadian does get all 4 seasons and summers can be real hot in some places in Canada. Winter is our longest season and can last around 6 months. So it's cold most of the time but not all the time. 5: Canadians love hockey and know how to play it well, False, Hockey is Canadas most popular sport but I know lots of people in Canada that hate hockey and never watch it. If you're not a sports fan it is doubtful you will watch hockey. One of the best ratings a NHL game got was back in 1994 when the Vancouver canucks were in the finals and that had around 7 million people watching it, still that is only 1/5 of Canadas population. 6: Canadians eat poutine and drink maple syrup, Somehwhat true, poutine and maple syrup are delicious and lots of people eat it. We don't eat it all the time but it is popular.

What a fantastic assortment of Canadians! So awesome... I've known someone who does or personally fit everyone of the stereotypes. Especially when I had just apologized to my fork for dropping it 15 seconds before she mentioned someone saying sorry to a pen they dropped. lol
