  • Do Aussies love drinking? Have 'the sexiest' accent as shown in Hollywood and are convicts? Aussies react to the most common stereotypes by ranking them as true, false or somewhere in the middle.

    When I was in the city, I literally saw a group of women walking barefoot while in their swimsuit bra. I asked my Aussie friend and he said, "Not really. Probably bogans." And then I googled search and I was like, "Oh...a female Chav."
    And yes...I found a redback spider weaving its web under one of the pool lounges that I was sitting on. And my aussie friend carefully placed the critter inside a glass jar and set it off in the woods and he was so calm and even spoke to it and said, "Mate, please don't come back to my house. Thanks." I was like, "Bloody hell...This country's going to kill me."

    • @laetitiabailey-mortimer8532
      @laetitiabailey-mortimer8532 4 роки тому +1

      You're unlikely to die from a redback spider bite (especially if you treat it properly - start with an ice pack on it, go to hospital if needed) but they can be pretty painful. Sydney funnel-web spiders, on the other hand...

      I think in a lot of countries during Summer you'll come across guys and gals in their togs or something barely beyond the definition of underwear. In fact I think it's worse in cold countries because during the few days it's actually hot, everybody wants to act like they live in tropicália and wear next to nothing while sunbathing in the park.
      In Australia when it's hot, I just want to stay indoors in the air-conditioning, because hot days are a dime a dozen. And when I do go swimming, I wear boardies and a rashie because the sun's too powerful to leave much skin exposed.

Do you think it's a lot? I think you're right about the laid back attitudes and with the humour there's a sense of wanting to just kind of get along and for everyone to be mates a b have a good time...

    I was reading and hearing about Australian wines becoming more well known because many are sulphite free. I had read in an organic gardening magazine that Australia had poor soil and common farming technique was layering straw and compost - in regards to vegetables,I think it was? Sheep farming is fairly well known and shepherds pie is popular... Any Aussies reading this comment that know about these things?
    I also watch an abundance of vintage lifestyle/clothing channels from Australia - is this very popular?

    the dangerous animal thing is so overstated and over blown, i would say wild animals of north America are waaaaaaay more dangerous! Bears, cougars, wolves and Alligators, you know actual apex predators not a spider or a snake that'll usually flee from you if you get to close or Crocodiles that live in places that the majority of the population don't live near or dingo's that are rare to see and don't often approach people.

    Aussies really are not drunkards compared to most European countries. Seriously, go to any country in Europe (not just mainland Europe but the UK and whatnot as well) and you'll almost certainly be encountering a lot more drinking shenanigans (especially amongst the younger crowd) than in Australia.
    It might be because the liquor laws are petty crap in Australia compared to most of Europe.

    There were a lot of convicts sent to Australia, however a lot were either Irish and Scottish not English. As in those times Irish was still the main language spoken in Ireland many spoke little or no English and were assumed guilty when put before an English court if they couldn't speak English. In the 19th Century Irish was the second most commonly spoken language in Australia behind English but it was frowned upon and seen as suspicious so they would be forced to speak English. The Irish language still has a small community of just over 1500 speakers in Australia. There were also a lot more free settlers than convicts but many people would probably be descendants of both and the convict side is often more notable. During the Gold rush in the 1850s there was a sudden influx of Chinese immigrants. Also the British broke 3 of their own laws upon settling in Australia. They were only allowed under their laws to take the land if they fought an organise battle against the natives, the natives agreed to give them land or the land was totally uninhabited. The Dutch and the French had actually found Australia about a century before the British but they landed on the Kimberley Coast of Western Australia which is one of few places in the world where the desert meets the sea. The British claimed "Terra Nullius" or land belonging to no one because they saw no evidence of cultivation. The oppressed Irish and Scottish who had come from Celtic origins as opposed to Anglo-Saxon English, were generally more sympathetic towards the natives as they too had faced centuries of oppression from the English. Only a small portion were actually convicts. Melbourne and Sydney were built by convicts. Hobart, Tasmania was the original tertiary penal colony but that later changed to Moreton Bay, Queensland (The original convict Settlement in Queensland was actually Scarborough but it later moved to Brisbane, as they did not originally find the mouth of the Brisbane River which is quite hard to imagine now). The Scarborough settlement in Queensland was not very big and didn't last long because the area was too open as it is on the Northern parts of the Redcliffe Peninsula. Perth and Adelaide were not originally Convict cities but were changed into convict cities because the Population did not grow on its own. Western Australia originally rejected the idea of joining the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901 but reluctantly joined. Melbourne and Sydney couldn't agree which should be the capital and Brisbane offered to be the capital to avoid a dispute but were ignored. Instead the states opted for a capital around half way inbetween as there was the town settlement of Queenbeyan, which Canberra would be built around as the national capital.
