Hi Nigel and greetings from Ohio. I am 66 now, but as a teenager, I believe I had acquired the 1969 Revell Saturn V model which was put together, only to be destroyed sometime later in a fire. Then, about 10 years ago, I got the itch to track down this model and luckily found just one that was located not far from my home at the Neil Armstrong Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio. They told me their supplier had located this particular model in Poland. It is the 1:96 25th Anniversary edition from 1994. Why I am writing is that several people have posted about how the Saturn V model paint scheme shown on the box, is somewhat different from the actual Saturn V's. That is correct. According to NASA, they built a "dummy" model of a Saturn V around 1964 and used it for various tests. It was nowhere near 363 feet tall, but I found a photograph of Kennedy Space Center workers using ropes in the Vehicle Assembly building to move the "dummy rocket" back and forth. Because of heat temperature concerns with the fuel tanks some of the black paint scheme had to be changed, so despite what the package photo shows, there was in reality, no black stripe on the first stage that ran around the circumference above the black stripes. The other change was in the section just below the section where the Lunar Module was stored. It went from short black stripes around the rocket, to just one solid black band. I came across these changes when looking at actual Saturn V photos and comparing them with the model rocket photo. All of these paint changes on the actual Saturn V were made and implemented before the first actual Saturn V, Apollo 4, was launched in November of 1967.

You weren't kidding when you said it was a big box. I ordered one yesterday and was shocked when I got up today, not only it was delivered less than 24 hours later, but when I walked into the living room I saw this massive thing in the middle of the room like the monolith from 2001!
Now I am too scared to even open the box. I wish I had already been practicing on something to get the rust off and skills up, no way I could try this as my first kit after decades layoff. Might just buy the Lego kit too and put that together, at least I'd have complete success simply clicking bricks together in the interim. No doubt be re-watching your 1/144 model build.

I had 1. I got for Christmas in 1970. The model was as tall as me back then. Those Astronauts who died in Apollo 1 were Gus Grisham, Ed White (1st American to do a SPACE WALK/EVA & Roger Chaffee were the 3 Men burned alive in the capsule fire in 1967. I don't know what happened to my model but I plan to buy another if they're available for sale nowadays. 🇺🇲✌💜🙏
I watched this video back in 2020 (after I'd just found your channel), and loved the look of it... also based on your videos, I bought the 1/44 Revell Saturn V which was a great kit - with issues! I built it straight from the box basically (no patience to be sanding/rescribing, etc around those odd bulges, and from a distance they don't show anyway!).
So any way, been waiting for a build video on this monster..!! 😁
I caved and bought one a couple of days ago, and have made a small start - sanding off the grill details from the block-1 Command Service Module, so that when I stencil-in the correct makings, it'll look better - but Wow! This whole thing looks HUGE!!
Got some white and black spray paints coming tomorrow.... can't wait to get started on the proper assembly!
I must make mention, as I'm sure that many others have already done, that the painting instructions are woefully wrong for a Saturn V - especially the manned missions. Use Google for photos of the correct paint scheme! Also the rolled section for Stage 3 (just below the Lunar Module) does not have the "USA" lettering , so use that sheet inside out, and paint it white to hide any bleed-through from the pre-printed letters! A lot of the exterior pipe/rocket motor pieces that are shown painted red, are not red... they're white or silver/gun-metal (Google is your friend for this too!).

The box is large because when its built and you want to bring it to a show and tell . Its designed to carry it with the two cardboard supports that are underneath the parts

Got the Revell model from my aunt for Christmas of '69. We blew it up with M80s once we'd finished it, probably because we were stoned from using that old-time model glue on it. ;-) This one is far, far superior to that kit. I look forward to building it.
I was born 23rd May 1968, from northern Ireland UK, I had the kit when I was 9 or 10 , at the time, yes the kit I had was the 1 with the kid on the front of the box back then,! Am thinking of getting this kit .
Watched you this morning Nigel ,starting the smaller version. I thought that was going to be quite a size but this is huge! Looking forward to the build m8. I was born a couple of weeks before the Moon landing so I have to treat myself. Great vid and thanks for sharing.
I restored one of these about 15 years ago. A friend had bought and built it in 1972, the base is very sturdy, there was no sag in all of those years sitting on a shelf.
This should make a brilliant model I had not realised one this size existed good luck with this one 👍🏻

Mate, this info and your channel are gold dust! I first saw this model as a 9yo and have missed out every time it was reissued. I've just bought a 40th Anniversary one and sat through all your descriptions of the contents, checking them off. Only missing the decals. I look forward to your build updates.
Space Model System has excellent replacement decals that cover all of the manned Apollo Saturn V missions, They come with detailed application instructions with photos from all of the missions.

The launch Escape system was used on a little Joe Rocket to text it it was never fired in a real launch
The launch escape tower did pull a boiler plate CM away from a malfunctioning Little Joe 2 rocket. This was an unplanned event that did prove that the system work as it should.
Really hope you decide to take on this beast in April, got the New Ware PE/resin kit to go with it but haven't the balls to tackle it on my own! Love the channel by the way.
The resin and PE upgrades sound interesting.With the scale leaning to oversized small parts.The shrouds i wouldve thought would benefit most.Good start for anyone looking to kitbashing sci fi spacecraft too.
3rd stage - S4B mean it was also known as the Saturn 4B. The early Apollos , up to and including Apollo 7 did not utilise the Saturn V. They were "stand alone" Saturn units which could be combined to give the desired thrust as they were never leaving Earth orbit.

I built this kit 20yrs ago, its a great model that i still have, the only problem is the plastic sheet rolled up stages with the USA and flag decals preprinted onto the sheets, the color has faded to a yellow white. You could paint the plastic but you would have to mask the decals, or sorce new ones. Great review
The part you are trying to remember at 18:30 is the "launch escape system" and you are correct, it was never used in any manned Apollo flight. About 30 seconds after stage two separation, the tower jettison motor would fire, removing this fixture, along with the boost protective cover from the command module.

I bought this kit in 1994 for the 25th anniversary. There wasn't much in the way of aftermarket items as there is now, so I got stalled trying to turn it into an accurate model of the Apollo 11 mission vehicle. One big thing I learned about this kit is that you will need to buy a set of decals for this one.
The white plastic, both the molded parts, and the printed sheets will turn yellow over time. Maybe yellow isn't the term, more like various shades of beige and tan! Otherwise. Assembly was pretty much trouble free. (just ignore the painting guide, and mask and paint to match the specific prototype)
The "new" on the box is a "bit of a con". 99% of people would think its a new kit ,not that its a old kit in new anniversary box.Others do it also and that's just as bad.When coke and pepsi change their packaging slightly they do not say "new" because they stand by the product and do not need to "con" people.Just my opinion on what companys feel is ok to do.
I'm trying to cut down in the large scale models that I build. Yeah, right! I'll end up buying this one eventually.
It was my birthday the other day, so I ended up buying the meter long Lego version Saturn V rocket. It's quite an impressive kit, even for a Lego set.

Unfortunately not. I haven't even started it yet.
Been having the kit since 1985, so it's way past time to get off my butt and build it. I think I'll do just that after finishing the two models I'm working on now, which is the 1/72 C-54 Blue Angels transport, and the 1/72 C-54 Thunder birds transport.

Before you paint check out all the videos on the Saturn 5 the paint scene is wrong on the instructions
I watched my brother making a 1/96 Apollo rocket, possibly revell or airfix I'm not sure, in about 1970. There were no full ring sections or flat panels to bend into tubes! It was all half tubes back then. So, presumably they have completely retooled to make the kit cheaper to make!
When this kit was released in 1969 it had the same flat panels as it has now.
I was only 5 or so, so forgive me if my memory isn't as good as it was. But I do remember it was the same height as me when finished. And had no flat sheet tubes.

I use tamiya colors in my airbrush, and I wonder what color I should use for the overall black on the rocket?
I've built 2 of these kits (the 1994 releases) and used Tamiya flat black. After masking and painting all the black roll patterns on the white kits parts, I used satin clear coast (semi-gloss) to give the kit the look I preferred (not too glossy and not a flat finish). They came out great.
you may know this, but the engine bells needs to be covered up in isolation material. they where normaly coverd with an asbestos isolation material to protect the inner bell from overheating. check out scott manleys channel for more info.

Hey Nigel, I started building this and have ran into an issue with one of the sheets that are used to form stage 1. Holes seem to be punched in the wrong place. The sheet with the USA flag. Have you discovered this issue yet?

Chris Elsen not a build along but I may do a video build? If I do it will be April next year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 13.

"I've never actually done a diorama before": Dude! Moons are easy! Do you get 'Sculpey" in the UK? It is bakeable "Plasticine". Craters and rocks can be done in your sleep with that stuff. Slightly less substantial but no need to bake: Stone Clay. Kenn Spriggs just finished an entire Clavius Base hanger including lots of Moon. Check him out.

I also have two of the Dragon 1/72 kits too.. oh and an Airfix 1/144.
Legally speaking it is "New" as it has never been issued previously as the 50th Anniversary kit. It matters not that kit is probably the 68/69 original perhaps with minor retooling. Any consumer legislation in the Western world would describe it as new.
The box looks like someone from Heller came up with design as it is very similar to their 'big' kits.
I think you need a bigger model bench ;)
7 mins before the box is opened, let's face it if you need to watch how to open a box you should not be building the kit .....lol
In The original kit the sides of the boosters were injection molded, not sheet plastic like it is now.
The first stage had 4 pieces to complete the cylinder. I don't remember how many pieces were used to make the second and third stages

With a awesome 1/72 Dragon Saturn V the Revell kit belongs in a dumpster...flat sheet make your own cyclinders...sorry its utter garbage and the Lego Saturn is more accurate...oh and more fun.
Revell should be ashamed re-releasing this kit...
