  • 🌟 Today, on Women Veterans Recognition Day, we honor the contributions of women in the United States Armed Forces. This day marks the anniversary of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, which opened the doors for women to serve in the regular and reserve forces during peacetime. Before this, women could only serve as nurses unless it was wartime.
🪖 We had the privilege of meeting Phyllis Wilson, a retired Army Veteran and president of the Military Women's Memorial. She spoke with us about the Military Women's Memorial Register, a national repository that collects and preserves the stories of women who have served. With over 311,000 stories already gathered, Phyllis emphasized the importance of documenting every woman’s service experience.
👷 Many members of the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) have military backgrounds. Programs like Helmets to Hardhats have been instrumental in helping Veterans transition to civilian careers in the #elevatorindustry, and the recently-launched IUEC Veterans Assistance Program (VAP) helps members and their spouses access the benefits they earned through military service.
