Swarad Gat T's not necessarily so. History is his one thing, archeology/prehistory is another. History based on actual texts should be correct to a large degree. at best archeology/prehistory is guesstimate. For example the Baghdad battery. Even if recreations can make a battery, doesn't mean the culture associated with used it as a battery. Until evidence found that that culture used it as a an electrical current source, should be false to say that culture created the first battery.
waswestkan yeah the TEXTS are correct cause the ppl have ACTUALLY written them. But we have done a lot of guess work in predicting the way the ppl lived by examining certain monuments or clues. Some of the predictions may be logically correct but some are not. That's what my point is
you're right... but in this case they were. the avenues run generally parallel to the length of the island while the streets run perpendicular to them. if you look at a map of Manhattan it makes complete sense. no other arrangement would be as efficient. I think you are on a bit of a wild goose chase here.
yes, I get that. the part that is stupid to me is where he envisions this phenomenon being discovered by future beings after some apocalypse ends our civilization and they try to decipher it's meaning. By doing so he seems to imply that alignments at ancient ruins may also just be random phenomena that we have given undeserved meaning to... which is certainly not the case.
this seems a bit pointless... Stonehenge and other ancient ruins are aligned to certain positions of the sun that act as a calendar - lining up with the solstices and equinoxes, not random days like May 28 and July 11.
If they concluded that America was all about war and baseball they wouldn't be far wrong, would they?
5 years from your comment - no, no it wouldn't.
Hay.... America IS all about War & Baseball.
2:13 dat whistle at the end of the sentence...beautiful
What an incredible man made phenomenon
the expression when he said "America was about the war and baseball" is kinda says that "well it's not totally wrong, really"
Neil is clearly fit to be Carl Sagan's successor. Different, sure, but certainly worthy.
Happy Manhattanhenge day!
Wonderful! That is so Cool! 🌞
I'd say we're going down a rabbit hole, but I'll defer to you: a wild goose chase, it is.
Great commentary, as usual. Slight clarification: actually the equinoxes are now around 20 March and 22 September. See Wikipedia.
"What the future archaeologists will conclude about our culture?"
Priceless! LoL
He’s got the voice!
This video clearly proves that we have misinterpreted the history and have made wrong assumptions about the early civilisations

Thoughtless Parodies mu
fabulous
Is there anything written about why the original planners of Manhattan chose to rotate the street grid?
every time I listened to NdGT, I always learned something...
Thumbs up for Matryoshkas in background!=))
AWESOME
This leaves me in a state of affective state of exaggerated well-being or elation; ie, euphoria! Hat off to you, good sir!

Neil needs to be president and education and science would flourish once again in the States.
yes, I noticed he neglected to mention that caveat as well.
This is a cool video.
I don't know what Neil is smoking, but I want some...wow!
Me encanta you tube tiene muchos videos divertidos... :D
When science makes me feel insignificant, I watch Neil deGrasse Tyson
I feel that he can burst into "we got a bad ass over here" pose at any given time.
it`s not that the street grid is rotated, it is that the island of Manhattan does not lay on a north south axis. no mystery about it.
How about "street-henge"?
Manhattan's grid also aligns with the rising sun in early December and January: Advent and Epiphany.
Holis no los conosco pero me da mucho gusto conocerlos besos;)
Vsauce ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Hei neil come in Sardinia..we have a lot of ancient monuments like those!

Streets don't have to be cut, according to the contours of a land mass. Take a look at the City of Huntington Beach, CA.
Actually, the Sun never rises and sets due east and due west outside of the tropics.
if i was a street in manhattan i'd be broadway.

Wait, July 11tth, Manhattenhenge... Surely we are celebrating the convenience store as we also give away free slurpees on that date.
"They would conclude that America was about war and baseball." And they'd be bang on the money!
Neil strikes again
War and Baseball is about right.
7-11 is significant occult symbolism.
War and baseball
That’s America for the majority of everyone here
How would they know about Memorial Day or baseball games. NDT silly.
We know about the holidays of ancient civilizations. Or at least, we think we do...
What Cryptid said plus we have videos, pictures, and less cryptic recording methods (at least to us). Not that silly
luke hoskam Perhaps by the other evidence we would leave behind?

I was the 666th like! I had to do it.
