I've made powdered sugar with a dedicated coffee grinder. It came out great!
Hi.....I use my coffee grinder on fine to make colored sugar into colored powdered sugar. No gritty feeling just soft as a baby's bottom powdered sugar. I think it works better than my food processor. I don't like coffee but I bought my grinder for nuts, sugar and other baking uses.
This is a well put together website and professional presentations. I just came across this today and very impressed! Kay from Perth, Western Australia.
thank you so very much!
Thank you for this tutorial! I need black suede, so I'm going to try dark cocoa powder and add black powder coloring. Hopefully that does the trick 😊
I am looking to make black. Im curious if this worked for you
Hi Ashlee!! - Kids love color powdered sugar! Thanks!
GqueBBQ you are so right, my kiddo's love it!
What brand is the powdered color? Will the powder sugar stick to a marshmallow without coating the marshmallow with almond bark or chocolate?
Vitamix blenders works well for powdering sugars: Just watch out for the highest setting TOO long, as that will heat the sugar. Well done video!
+Dieter Davis yup a good blender works as good as a food processor, but yeah, don't cook the sugar ;) and thank you so much
Alternative idea for the colored sugar ---> powdered; grinding with a mortar and pestle. While slower than a food processor, it would be more thorough. Gonna try this; share results later!
Still relevant to this day!! So good. Thank you
I'm a kid and I tried it. It looks like magic powder
+juraj kalna very fun! what color did you do?
It’s helpful but what if we don’t have one of the food processors and only a blender. Would it still work?
Oh my heck!!! Finally. A UA-cam baker I can more deeply respect because you use a Bosch mixer! Yes!!! You are super easy and pleasant to watch, quality sound and video...and likeable. Definitely subscribed!!!!
thank you so very much! and yes a bosch is the only way to go!
Hello! i have powdered sugar and powdered dye but no food processor nor coffee grinder. Can i just mixed them by hand?
I was wondering the same thing.
When I watched your videos for the first time I was like she must have like 150,000 subscribers at least then I looked like no way she should have like 150,000 subscribers!
+samantha frost awww you are so sweet! I appreciate that - someday!
Can I use this colored sugar powder for dusting fondant flowers??
Hi everyone what do you recommend to change Cotija cheese ? Any recommendations please 😊
I don’t have black gel food coloring can I use liquid?
I love your videos a lot. Keep doing what you are doing. You are awesome.
+Cammy Elliott thank you so much! I appreciate that so much!
Ashlee, the powdered food dye. Is that the same as petal dust? Also if I want to a vibrant deep color how can I achieve that? The powdered sugars seem to be only pastels. Thank you!!
+L Fleisher no petal dust and powdered food dye are different, powdered food dye is a much stronger color and cheaper than petal dust. since your mixing it with SO MUCH white powdered sugar anything but pastels will be pretty hard to achieve
+Ashlee Marie Cakes thank you so much for your reply!
Hi Ashlee Marie, can you do a edible snow globe glass dome using the isomalt?
+Susan Segawa you TOTALLY could!
Do they sell colored powdered sugar?
Do you know if powdered dyes are safe to eat raw? Since this would be used to decorate cakes. Also, Can I use natural food coloring powders made from vegetables? Thank you for the tips!
yes it's safe to eat "raw" and I haven't used natural food coloring powders but I can't see why not!
thank you! :)
Hi Ashley, can you share a link to the video where you use the colored powdered sugar. I’d like to see that
I used one of the colors on this suede effect cake video ua-cam.com/video/UcptgzrKlm0/v-deo.html
Is this effect is only for fondant cakes, can I get the same suede effect on buttercream?:)
it works best on fondant - the fondant, when steamed, gets tacky so it is the perfect way to hold the powder. Buttercream is either too wet, or crusted over and too dry to really work well
you are nice person and good teacher.thank you so much
you are so sweet! thank you so much
Thanks for those share with us 😊
Thank for the video was very helpful!
You're welcome:)
wondering if paste colors would work
Hi! Can i mix different colours of powdered food colouring to create a new shade? For example yellow and blue to create green..
yes, but I'd try to just buy the color you want, the results will be better and more true as the powders won't perfectly mix together, it will just be a lot of yellow and blue poweres giving off a greenish look
Great job. Thank you. Love from kuwait
What if you don't have a food processor, how else would you mix it together?
Blender
+ashlee marie cakes when using the last method, if I'm making buttercream, do I have to put it in the food processor first or can I just mix it in with the mixer before adding my butter?
+tee96 nope, if your making frosting no need to dye the sugar, just make the frosting and add dye Straight to the frosting
+Ashlee Marie Cakes ok, I was trying to see if it would provide a DEEPER color if done this way.
gotcha, not really but letting the frosting sit (in the dark away from the lights) the coloring does get stronger. There are a few tricks with some colors, what color are you trying to achieve?
+Ashlee Marie Cakes I was looking for a deep purple and I'm wondering more about the taste after adding all that dye.🤔
yeah using a lot of liquid dye will effect the taste - gel will too after awhile, but the powder is by far the best option IMO, if your going for a dark purple maybe a little cocoa powder to help darken it first, but if your going for a jewel tone maybe not
Hi Ashlee can I use this sugar to color gum paste flowers too, thank you!!
I would just use the luster dust straight, you wouldn't want to be adding a bunch of exrtra sugar to the gumpaste, also since your basically "watering down" the coloring here the effect would be very pale vs using the luster dust straight.
Ashlee Marie Cakes thank you Ashlee, blessings!!
What's that blue powder??
Can I use this as a color dust for fondant figurines
it will be pretty faded - you can use the disco dust to color the powdered sugar - not sure it would be strong enough to go the other way.
Do you think this would be a good way to color royal icing?
+Michelle Walker I guess... but just using the dye straight would work just as good
I was thinking for red and black. They are such hard colors to get without using so much coloring that it will make you mouth red or black.
+Michelle Walker in the end you'd be using the same amt of dye, you'd just be adding it at a different time. For red and black royal icing I always use powder dye and make it a day ahead of time (for black I make chocolate royal icing then add the black powder).
Thanks Ashlee!
Another great video! Thanks!
Thank you!
Thank you! So handy!
+Choux Cake Studio you are so welcome!
If I don't have the food processor what can I use?
you could use a blender in very small batches but blenders tend to get hot and burn the sugar so you need to be careful. if your using the granulated sugar method really theonly way to really get it powdery at home is a really good food processor, if your mixing in dye you can stir by hand it will just take much much longer
Can we use this as luster dust?
it would be better to use straight luster dust than this "sugared" down version - it will be very faded vs the stonger color of the luster dust but yes
could i use this to 'powder pastel' paint my cakes????????
if your painting cakes by getting the dye wet I'd just use the dye and food grade alcohol, I'd skip the sugar
ok thank you. :D
This is used to make a Velvet texture on fondant correct?
or cocoa, yes, I match the powdered sugar to the fondant color
Ashlee Marie Cakes thank you so much I just subscribed
thank you so much
Amazing. Thanks a lot
You're welcome, thank you for watching it!
how bout if we add food coloring in normal sugar , mix it and then powder sugar the normal sugar after adding the color
+areesha ahmad yup, you can totally do that, BUT you might need to dry out the sugar first in the oven before grinding it all the way down
ok thnx
Excellent
Thank you so much!
how can i do color silver
+Jesse Diaz I'd use silver disco dust amzn.to/1P7wlxT mixed with corn starch/powdered sugar OR grind up silver sugar amzn.to/1I9wbGM
You Should Have So Many More Subsss Your Amazeee
+Kimberly Pena thank you so much! I wouldn't mind at all ;)
9+
thank you!!!
You are welcome!! glad you enjoyed it!
This saved my ideas for a gender reveal party treats! Thanks so much??
you are so welcome!
I'm gonna try the first one cause I'm cheap
I used my coffee grinder
wat about if we use food coloring
+areesha ahmad the liquid food coloring? because it's so WET it would simply clump or turn almost paste like to get a stronger color, and if you used very little so it wouldn't clump it would be very VERY pale, hard to see.
OH THNX
Hindi mein batao Jara yah kaun si dawai hai kis marj ki hai
I just subscribed
Oh thank you! I hope you are enjoying the videos!
And just keep putting your fingers in with the blade in there, some incompetent person is going to slice themselves.
Yes you have to be super careful!
Anyone else wondering if it’ll work for a snow day? 👀 ❄️ 👃?
👍🏼👏💖 thanks great video great commentary!!👍🏼
I use coffee grinder to make powder sugar out of regular sugar
why do you need a food processor, can you just mix it normally?
for the first way the gel dye and powdered sugar tend to clump, so the food processor help the color get spread evenly. for the second way you need it to break the sugar down into powdered sugar. the third way you could just stir, but this is a nice fast way to get it evenly colored
