ALL IT TAKES Is ONE Listen & This 1979 1-Hit Wonder Will Become a FAVORITE! | Professor of Rock

- Coming up, an interview with Paul Roberts of Sniff 'n' the Tears about one of my favorite songs of 1979, Driver’s Seat. Technically the band is a one-hit wonder and what a story behind this one… First of all, Driver’s Seat sat on the shelf for years… because the label was changing distributors.. and then a worker’s strike at the record plant might’ve kept it from being a #1 hit because the factory couldn’t print the record so fans couldn’t buy it. And then when it did become a hit the band immediately broke up… but then a decade later the song finally hit #1 when it was used in an insurance commercial. The long and winding story of the classic Driver’s Seat is next on Professor of Rock.

The 70s 1 Hit Wonder you need to hear NOW! Coming up….It’s an extraordinary episode of Bottled Lightning- where a hit song took years to finally get a release… Years after writing and demoing it the band was finally able to record it and then it sat for a year because the label was changing distribution.. then it struggled in its homeland because when people wanted the record it wasn’t available because the record pressing plant had gone on strike. Finally, in 1979, it became a hit as the perfect combination of 70s guitar and 80s Moog synth and then the band broke up… only to have the song hit #1 again in 1991. The singer and writer of the hit tells us the never-ending saga next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightening where we celebrate a song that was king for a day or for many days. We honor artists and bands and that one glorious hit they had that rocketed up the charts…and for reasons unknown didn’t have another hit. We all know them for the term one-hit wonder but we try to step beyond that and celebrate them as Lightning in a bottle. Today we go for a ride in the Driver Seat with Sniff 'n' the Tears .. the #15 US billboard hit from 1979 with original lead singer and songwriter Paul Roberts. Roberts is also a gifted painter.
This was a perfect song for its time with a cool acoustic guitar opening that turned into a 70s-like AOR guitar attack with a dollop of sleek MOG synthesizer that was driving toward the future with irresistible background vocals and lyrics that were more than meets the eye. This was a song that stopped me dead in my tracks the first time I heard it. It’s one of the best Bottled Lightening tunes of the late 70s.
I caught up with singer-songwriter Paul Roberts about the song and he gave us some amazing insight including where the heck the band name sniffin the tears came from.

Poll: What is your pick for the COOLEST Hidden Gem Song of the Rock era? One that doesn't get played often?
Oh good question. I'll always have a soft spot for A Girl I Knew Somewhere
Sun Always Shines On TV 📺 A-Ha
...I'll say it 4, 397 times...The Kane Gang's *"Motortown"!!!!* ...that tune justs.....lights UP a turntable.....AWESOME Summer-y Production...ahead of it's time for 1987, too........
I'll nominate ... "The Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson.
You Got Lucky - Tom Petty and The Heart Breakers
One of the most amazing things about this song is how the drummer kept up that beat throughout the entire song using a very basic kit.
No kidding.
I just came here to comment on the very same thing. I have attempted holding drum sticks and playing that beat for the length of the song and my hands were exhausted after about 2 minutes.
I wonder how he managed to pull that off.
Quite seriously I’m pretty sure the drummers coked to the eyeballs
That 4 on the floor beat has been used in quite a few hit songs. It maintains a rock steady tempo but always seems as if it's driving forward. I also like the guitar riffs that sound like an old muscle car shifting gears. That beat is only difficult for drummers only because we love fills...lmaooouuut. No fills required in this song. It's a great tune loved it in boogie nights.
YOU DID IT EVERYONE! 1 MILLION, CONGRATULATIONS PROFESSOR! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yes indeed!!! Congratulations Professor!!!!!
*_Yes! It's ABOUT DANG TIME!_* : )
I've been glancing at that number for some time, watching the progress. Well deserved!
I love this song. One of those songs you forget about until it pops up on a random playlist and you cannot stop yourself from grooving along.
That's right!
Ok, I was a HS Sr in '79 and an avid listener of my local Chicago rock stations. How the heck did I miss this one? Thanks for filling in the gaps.
That “oh I forgot this song is cool” song.
"Driver's Seat" was (and still is,really) a really catchy tune that was unique at the time. It tends to get your attention from the start and is easy to kind of fall into as it goes on...Has it really been 45 years since1979 ? Time flies.........
Amen!
It’s still unique.
great song. one of the more popular ones played at the roller skating rink.
This song doesn’t sound 45 years old!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I agree with you-it sounds MUCH newer, like late 1990s maybe?
It's arguably one of the coolest songs, period.
Never ever tire of it.
The whole album is great. Glad I bought that one, back in the day. Still have it--on vinyl! Love to listen to it, over and over.
Summer of 1979. This was the post HS graduation evening cruising tune.
I heard Driver's Seat about a year ago for the first time in many years, and I was immediately taken back to those hot summer evenings.
This is truly one for ages. It never gets old.
I remember driving home at night from wrestling practice, in my Datsun and Driver Seat would play on the radio. This song and the Cars Let's Go will always remind me of driving at night as a teenager. Great memories.
Yes! Top classics on my regular playlist for sure 👍
Got my license in summer of
78.
This song and the Cars .......always on my car stereo.
The coolest thing about this song is that it doesn't really sound like anything else.
It has its own unique vibe that makes it kind of timeless.
That, and the black guy doing backing vocals , ye-eeeah
Agreed. And haunting.
It came out around the time I was really getting into "New Wave". It isn't in that category but it definitely echoed a lot of the intent and experimentation.
Now I have to wonder how Astrophysics would do a cover of it (ua-cam.com/play/PLs5vrZZybIi-AWIAF-Lt-23clxfTzE-1J.html)
1979 was arguably one of the best music years ever! Also when I graduated High School👍🏻
I absolutely loved Sniff ‘n the Tears. The entire album was a classic.

I graduated high school in ‘79 and remember this fabulous song well. It was perfect!
Congrats on your 1 million, Professor! I’ve learned so much from you!
Purple and Gold Class of 79!
Kirsty MacColl “They Don’t Know” was another treasure that failed because of a strike. Covered by Tracey Ullman a few years later but Kirsty’s version is absolutely the best. #1 in my heart. RIP Kirsty.
thamks thats the song i heard sunday but couldnt think.of the title
I discovered her music a few years ago, what a talent and stolen from the world too soon.
YEEEEESSSSS!!!!
I have loved this song forever. You are completely right on this one, Professor!
Another reminder from the professor of a forgotten song, but now must add to the music folder.
The opening riff instantly teleported me through time and space.
YES!
Please put it on your playlist! I put it on my playlist!
Stephen Lipson said this was the song he discovered the power of toggling the mute button which took the song to another level. This song launched his career, nice to hear him mentioned.
First time I heard it was around 98 and my dad had just bought a new jeep wrangler. The jeep also had a custom speaker system that was incredibly loud. My parents enjoyed taking my brother and I to beach that was two hours away. It was normal for my parents to just load us up on weekends and go drive somewhere and the only thing that cost them anything was food, gas and admission to park and staying at a campsite. It was late in the evening and my dad put on a random 80s music cd and this was the fourth or fifth track. I remember it fondly because we were headed back home and as the ocean waves came beating into the shore and the sun began to fall into the other side of the world, this track came on. It felt like the coolest moment in the world and one I never forgot. Great track and timeless.
'79 was my 18th year; just starting out in life with a job and a car and too much testosterone. No obligations other than keeping up with food, rent and gas. Saturday nights were reserved for whatever hedonistic fun I could find. Driver's Seat was one of those songs that fit the moment perfectly when it came on the car radio while driving around L.A. at night looking for a good time. Good times.
Thanks for sharing!
A great night song.
Graduate of '79 , you described it well !
Just 1979 ? It's one of the greatest songs of all time !! Sniff N The Tears discography is chock-full of great songs !!!

Art Bells Coast to Coast was playing this as bumper music way back in 1988
Really? I know he used "The Chase" by Giorgio Moroder quite a bit.
Absolutely! Really miss Art Bell. He also played a song written by Crystal Gayle for him specifically.
RIP ART YOU ARE MISSED
@@johnnyjohnson1326 💯 Great man and Greater loss to Mankind!
I loved listening to Art Bell late at night.
I always associate the song with Art Bell.
A song that came out of nowhere and caught us all offguard with it's unique and brilliant creative style. The opening, guitar riffs, and amazing vocals grabbed you instantly!! I loved this gem and was immediately hooked!! I was thrilled you brought it back to life with this cool interview!! Ty Professor!!❤
I was a 9th grader in 79...back when there was no internet and FM stereo was where one listened to whatever new music was breaking. There were 3 primary rock FM radio stations that I would listen to. WCCC in Hartford, CT, WHCN in Hartford and WAQY in Springfield MA. So as my friends and I would be cruising around in the car, we would quickly turn the dial, scanning those 3 stations to see if anything cool was playing...and Driver's Seat was one of those songs with such an incredible hook that if you hit that song while scanning the dial, it'd be an immediate, "LEAVE IT THERE!".
Indeed, an outstanding song!
@mbgrafix - Hey, Mike - I grew up in NW CT and was also a freshman in high school in ‘79 and listened to those stations, too, along with I95 in Brookfield and WPLR in New Haven. Those were some of the last great days of FM radio. >sigh< The times they are a-changing and not necessarily for the better. ✌🏼
I was in Springfield at that time myself, senior year of high school (Classical, while it still existed) so those ALONG with 'AAF / Worcester & later, 'PLR were my go-to album rock stations (talked to Lich a FEW times) with 'COZ over 'BCN around Boston at college (BRIEFLY) - correct me if I'm wrong but, didn't 'HCN do a CROSS-promotion with the WHALERS of some sort where a related cartoon image appeared as part of their marketing as WELL? It's admittedly VAGUE now - ANOTHER track I'll NOT soon forget from then: Ian Gomm's "Hold On".....
From Bristol myself.. remembering all those stations , even Howard Stern got his start in Hartford
@@edwinrodeo : actually headed down there on Sunday, as it happens - BEEN a WHILE since I was last.....
So glad you stumbled upon it.
I’d never heard the band or song before today-so glad to be introduced to this song and band!
Paul’s voice sounds like Al Stewart and it brought me to remember the song Road to Moscow, Year of the Cat, and Time Passages.
There's definitely a similarity between the two.
Wow, 1979 senior year of highschool, it was definitely a precursor to new wave. Driver Seat, take control of your own life, love it! Thanks for covering this classic!
Well said!
ONE MILLION SUBSCRIBERS!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO ADAM READER: THE PROFESSOR OF ROCK. May U have millions more. 😃😃🎆🎆🎆🎆🎆🎆
“Driver’s Seat” was issued as a single when I was 11. I don’t remember hearing it in my youth; I ended up stumbling upon it on UA-cam sometime in the last decade. Even though I’m not particularly devoted to new wave, it has been one of my all-time favorites from the first listen. Thanks for this, Adam, it made my day! 👍🏻
When I think of 1979, I think of hearing that song on an album rock FM station I used to listen to on an old radio that belonged to my mom that she gave to me..I'd wake up hearing it morning after morning after my alarm clock went off to get ready for school as a kid. Reminds me of early September, 79. A rock/new wave-y classic that's always fresh. Thanks professor.
I loved this song from the very first time I heard the song; Driver's Seat.
I still listen to it all of the time; just to get a great feeling.
This is one of my husband's favorite songs. He used to jam it while whipping around in his 1969 charger down dirt roads in the country side of rural Indiana when he was a teenager. He flips out karaoke hosts when he sings it in a line up with beds are burning and radar love 😂😂.
I was a club DJ from the mid 70's to mid 80's and I loved this one. I would remix it to extend the song for six or so minutes. No one minded at all! Still love to listen to this song!
I had forgotten how much I loved this song. Thank you.
Professor, you are the best at interviewing these artists. I remember this song but never knew anything about the band. Interviews like these should be part of a historical archive of music. Great job Professor!
Great backstory! Thanks Adam!Nice to meet the band and how it all came about!

I totally forgot this song. But I remembered this song in the late seventies early eighties on my car radio. This 😮was a fantastic song. I had worked at some rock n'roll clubs back in the late seventies early eighties in Norwalk and Westpot, Connecticut. Just loved music and then went into the corporate world. Now, I am living my dream on a hobby farm. Never give up your dreams. I always wanted to be around horses and farm animals ♥️. Music gives you power to think about your world.
