Yea, it's probably obsolete in the sense that I don't think there are many good reasons to get one now. There are better 6.5s, .30s, 7mms, and even a better .277 (6.8 Western).
That said, like many "obsolete" cartridges, a good firearm, some good ammo, and a good reloading press can take you very far.

7 SAUM is pretty comparable but 6.5 is not gonna be used for moose. 30s have a lot more recoil and or not as flat. Most 7mms are high recoil. The new 6.8 western is more recoil as well and in a lighter gun since it’s short action. Also 6.8 western and 270 wsm are almost identical, but 6.8 takes longer and heavier bullets and has a different barrel twist. Performance based they are the same out to hunting ranges as the wsm is faster. It was just a way for them to sell more guns and ammo instead of just making bullets.

Are there better rounds for anything I would use that type of round for? Absolutely. None of them, outside of the 30-06, has the history of the .270. That's my biggest draw to the .270 is the history.

The way you tell if a bullet is obsolete is by checking the shelves. So ….. I would say you are dead wrong on this. Doesn’t matter if other calibers are better. The 270 is awesome. There are maby others that are better in their current manufacturing. When you say ok , let’s mass produce 6.5prc( because it is much better than creedmore)…. I read a lot of comments and take them at face value. To say that the 270 is obsolete I think is a bit premature. Are there cartridges that outperform it, yes. I think that the real difference between the 270 vs 6.8 western is the heavy for caliber bullets and modern technology that wasn’t available when the 270 was introduced. Have always thought that the best caliber is the one that you can consistently shoot well and know that your caliber has the power to get the job done.

    • @garrytalley8009
      @garrytalley8009 2 роки тому +2

There was something that was brought to my attention just recently about the 270 and that is barrel twist. If one wants to shoot the longer bullets for long range, you need a faster twist than the 1-10 you commonly get in the rifle. I limit myself to 300 yards or less, so it does not matter to me to not use those high BC bullets. But for some people that want to shoot long range with better accuracy it might. The 270 will never be obsolete. It is one of those cartridges that can be purchased easier than most about anywhere they sell ammo. Not so with some of the newer cartridges or the ones that there are not a lot of guns out there to feed.

There isn't any rifle that is the same chamber from rifle to rifle. Just all the reasons you mentioned about what it was good for defeated your comment of its obsolete. I just bought one recently and just because I didn't have one. Many new cartridges have their purposes but most of them are suited only for longer range shots that are not common to that much hunting mostly target shooting. I am sure your friends counter will out do the likes of your video. There is a cost factor that is a positive as long as easy to get ammo.

For a one-rifle man, a 30’06 is the best bet in North America. For those fortunate to have the choice and option to taylor guns to game and terrain, like myself, I’d pick a 270, a 30-30, and a 35 Whelen for medium to large game, 270 is still a great cartridge. Are there better, yes. It depends on use. For what it is, the 270 is hard to beat given its design compared to more modern cartridges. It beats the 6.5 CM, has less recoil than 30’06 and the magnums, and with hand loads can come close to many popular long range cartridges using less powder. Availability world-wide, 270 can be found almost everywhere. Obsolete, I’d say no.

Good video. I love my .270 but admit there are better cartridges out there. The thing about .270 is that the vast majority of US hunters are 200 yards and in, whitetail hunters, that only shoot their guns twice a year. You can walk into any gun shop and find a used .270 and ammo and kill any whitetail you'll come across with less recoil than a 30-06 or 308. For most shooters less recoil means more accurate shots and more ethical kills. .270 in my mind is still the whitetail king. Keep up the videos man, love your channel. God bless.

Having both a 270 Winchester and a 6.8 Western, the 270 is not in the same league as the 6.8 Western. The 6.8 Western wins in all categories; accuracy, energy at long range, efficiency and is a short action. I love my 270 Winchester, but the 6.8 Western is a much better cartridge and is here to stay. I will still use my 270 for hunting at short ranges, but my 6.8 Western will be used for long range hunting and target shooting. All dropped and filled the freezer. I also have a 7mm rem mag because I like the heavier bullets that the 270win can not be loaded with. But when I decide to hunt, I always look for my 270 win.. A classic, yes. Obsolete?…Far from it! The .270 Winchester may not be the most efficient cartridge with the highest BC bullets, but it’s a fast moving flat shooter out to 400 yards and handles a wide range of game with authority. Just because there are newer cartridges that will accomplish the same or better doesn’t mean the .270 won’t continue right on filling freezers. Words mean things, dude. The .270 is in no way obsolete. Obsolescence means that the technology has progressed so far that there is no longer use for it beyond niche applications (I.e. flintlocks for PA muzzleloader season). The .270 is extremely useful and popular, and will be for decades to come.

To say the 270 is obsolete is about like saying the F-16 is obsolete. Are there better planes being made that are more capable on paper for what the F-16 does? Yes. So many other nations have purchased the F-16 knowing that fact. But it offers performance, support and value that is more than satisfactory even today. Barrel length could make a difference with whether a cartridge would be better than another. There are a lot of factors to be considered in a rifle and cartridge down to the bullet and power as well. .270 works great for me here in Georgia. In the northern half of the state, you don't shoot deer at long ranges, at least I haven't. I don't have it in me to hunt bears, so I only care about what works on deer. I have a cheap remington 7400 .270. I probably shoot 0-5 rounds actually hunting every year. At the range, my gun is the issue, not the .270 cartridge. The 7400 has a weak barrel, so sighting in a scope requires you wait a couple minutes between shots for the barrel to cool. My brother's fancy .270 is okee-dokee at 6-700 yards and you can take shot after shot, and use basically any .270 ammo, if you compensate for drop, etc.. With my little remington, I stick to Federal and Remington ammo. No problems in 15 years. I have a ton of ammo in my gun locker, so I'll probably never need another cartridge or even a better gun. My scope is 50 times better than my gun, but hey, whatever.

Most hunters don’t kill animals past 300 yards so making it shoot bullets 100-140g completely makes sense. It wasn’t created to out do the 30-06 but to compliment it. That, and the 6mms sucked away almost all of the demand that the .25s had enjoyed up until 1955. When the .25-06 was commercialized in 1969, it was already OBSOLETE! lol. Really though, for the practical hunter needing a flat shooting deer/predator cartridge, why get a .25-06 when you could have a .243 which is a better varmint cartridge and adequate deer cartridge, or a .270, which is a fabulous deer cartridge, and can be flexed into other roles, from varmint hunting to moose hunting?

Before the current events and ongoing plague I picked up a lefty ruger hawkeye 270. Never used a 270 before but I will try it and I also bought lots of factory ammo and lots of bullets and reload supply. I think the 30-06 is more universal and perhaps useful but until last year 270 ammo was very cheap and plentiful in my area. I'm agnostic on how I feel about it or like or dislike but time will tell. I've got lots of affordable Speer and hornady bullets to load and practice in it and plenty of the Federal premium factory mono ammo for hunting.

I listened to Chuke's rebuttal and, in my opinion, he didn't do too good of a job. So, I'm going to put my two cents into it. IF... There's anything wrong with the 270, it is the barrel twist. If you don't get MOA out of a rifle, it is usually, the rifle's barrel quality and/ are the person behind the rifle.
When you compare a 270 to other calibers you can only truly compare it a 30-06 based cartridge. No 308 based cartridge can statistically outperform it.
The only cartridges that can outperform a 270 are in the Magnum class. A 300 Win mag, 7 mm Remington mag, 6.5 PRC, 270 WSM, 300 WSM, and 6.8 Western are all magnums. And these cases the drawback is recoil. Compared to the 270, 308 has more recoil as well as all these magnums.
When it comes to reloading I'll have to argue that that is biased and it's not standardized. Thus, it cannot be used in a comparison due to the manipulation factor. So to be fair we have to look at factory ammo. As it states, you compare apples to apples. Example- Factory Hornady eld-x ammo would be a fair comparison.
Another issue is the design usage. Example- a 6.8 SPC was designed for a 14" barrel. Hornady bases they're ballistics of a 6.8 SPC for 16-in barrel. There are those who try to compare a 6.5 Grendel to the 6.8 SPC. A Grendel's ballistics is based on a 24 inch barrel. When you compare the ballistics between a 16-in barrel and a 24 inch barrel it's not s fair comparison. When you shoot a 6.5 Grand in a 16-in barrel it actually is below the ballistics of a 6.8 SPC.
Thus, the comparisons should be based on usage. The 270 was designed for honey and flatter shooting at distance. So, for any reasonable ethical hunting situation, 500 yards should be maximum. And in most cases 500 yd is long way except certain types of sheep and prairie style hunts and most hunters shoot well at that distance. In most scenarios is more about the person.
Most people are too fat or lazy to stalk to a closer range.
Also there's a mindset a bigger is better. "I use a 300 Win mag to make sure that it drops." Ok,... How far would be your max shot? "Oh, about 200 yd" that is total Overkill.
The only issues with the 270 is the standard 1-10 twist rate, which can be easily solved by changing to a 1-8 twist rate. Thus, newer and higher BC bullets can be properly utilized. But, at present, that entails reloading
In closing, if you can find a cartridge that has less recoil and superior ballistics than a 270 ,all things given, then you have a good comparison.

It is far from obsolete. I don't know what you have been shooting but I have not seen a 270 that can't shoot sub-MOA. I could even get sub-MOA 5 shot groups out of my father's semi-auto 7400 Remington. Of course, you are in Alaska, and I wouldn't choose a 270 to hunt there just because one might end up with a bear in their face and not enough gun for pure safety. I find the 270 a very accurate cartridge like the 25-06 and even the 22-250. But we all have our opinions. It seems you were praising the 6.5 Creedmoor and its ballistics are similar, but it does not make a 270 obsolete. Some other cartridges that shoot the same bullet will never make the 270 obsolete either. Because buying ammo off the shelf you often can't even find those calibers at the local store if you buy ammo for your hunt even when ammo is not hard to find. You are entitled to your opinion and shouldn't even own one if you really feel that way. BTW I have a couple of 6.5 Creedmoor's as well as a 270 and I love them all. The Creedmoor is more forgiving and will produce tighter groups, more easily but they will all shoot sub-MOA with the right loads and bullets.

The choice of 270 winchester for the most overrated cartridge is interesting, especially when it seems you're talking from a hunting standpoint. Your points of chamber issues and magazine length are a bit funny, when that's got nothing to do with the cartridge, but rather the actual firearms manufacturer. You also mentioned that the 270 has no match grade ammunition, and isn't accurate. It has no match grade ammunition because since it's inception it has always been deemed a simple meat getter. A favorite sako 75 that my grandfather owned won it's division at a local 500 yard groundhog shoot, and came in 3rd overall. Beating out 6ppcs, 243 ackleys, 338 lapuas, and other well known target rounds. So then, is the accuracy problem inherent to the cartridge, or the lack of match grade factory ammunition? If it's the ammunition that's the problem, then it's the fault of gun and ammo makers. Then again, I don't get why you brought up federal's match ammo in the first place when this seems to be a hunting debate.
If it is a hunting debate, then the answer to most overrated cartridge is easily the 6.5 creedmoor. It was designed as a long range target cartridge, and has been adapted to be a long range hunting cartridge. The problem is that it's most at home under 300yds on deer and elk sized game. Then the high bc eld-x starts to come apart and not maintain it's weight. At that point you need to look into something like an interbond or partition, or a barnes x. At which point you're losing out on the .625 bc that made it good in the first place. At that point you just have a cartridge firing similar bullets to the 270, but 150-200fps slower. I just don't see the advantage in the situation.

    • @AlaskanBallistics
      @AlaskanBallistics  2 роки тому

I love my 6.5 creedmoor but i agree that it's no .270 for hunting.
My point is that there's no match grade chamber so every rifle is different and many many rifles have that too long for the magazine issues.
I will say that my 6.5 creedmoor with the barnes lrx 127gr performed flawlessly at 288 yards on caribou.
But it's the 6.5 prc that is better than .270, the 6.5x284 Norma that's a tie or at least almost ties the .270, and the 6.5 creedmoor is way under powered comparatively.
It works fine as a hunting round but you need a hunting bullet not eld-x... that we agree on.

There was not a lot of facts in this video You can argue that there are better cartridges for specific animals yes but the 30-06 is the only other cartridge that is as versatile but it has more recoil. Both can shoot anything from coyotes to moose. That is one gun for everything vs 1 gun for every species. Every chamber is different and to be measured. Tikka is known for having short magazines. My Remington adl has plenty of room for longer bullets and seating. Since you only have one rifle you can change the barrel to a match barrel or get a different twist even they do make them. The 270 loaded correctly is one of the flattest shooting cartridges out there. Even competes with these new cartridges and it’s 100 years old. New bullet technologies have helped it a lot. Also it can be loaded hotter than most manufacturers have it so hand-loaders will get even better performance. Only one claim is true but it is true about every cartridge. IMO with the versatility, recoil, and ballistics, there are only a handful of other cartridges that are similar.

Just look at how hard it is to find primers, especially for shotgun/inline m-loaders. If your lucky enough to find a magic load, you will be lucky to find the same components to duplicate results. Id say on on the shelf ammo, common calibers(6.5 CM is common now as 243 to 30-06) will do well and the new hot rods of the day will suffer and possibly fade unless components availability comes back as well as being well stocked on shelves.

The fact is when it is compared to calibres of the same approximate size it does very well. Conparing it to a 6.5 prc is a bit unfair in my book they fall into different categories and when arguing ballistics the point can perpetually be argued to where your shooting animals with a 338 lapua or 300 rum. If one is looking for a midrange calibre with good performance and relatively low recoil the 270, 280, 7x64 etc. All tick the same boxes it will come down to availability and preferences. 270 will alwayse be popular.

It is interesting to see/read cartridge discussions. Opinions on what is more relevant and less relevant. I think for the masses what makes something more relevant is availability, marketing and how a name rolls off the tongue. “270 Winchester”. “6-5 Creedmoor” they just roll off the tongue. Historical performance speaks volumes and influences consideration as well. When the 270 was introduced it only real competition that was readily available(in the U.S.) the 30-06 and the 250 Savage. The 270 handily outreached(30-06[‘20s standards]) and/or outpowered(250 Savage) it’s competition. It earned it’s place on the shelves over a couple of decades or so of effort. It’s so entrenched I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon. Even the 6-5 Creed took about 8 years to get where it is. At this point I think it is entrenched as a hunting let alone target cartridge(though, like the 250 Savage of it’s time, too much is asked of it imo). But a couple of other things that have helped the 6-5 Creed along(like the 9x19) is low recoil(it’s a fact we are weaker/more sensitive as human beings than decades before) and not just availability but literally being swamped with them by every manufacturer wanting a piece of the bandwagon pie. I’ll stop my ranting there. I love em all really

God bless.

Most overrated? Easy: 6.5 Creedmoor. Nothing wrong with it at all. Just waaaaay over hyped.

a repackaged round like the 6.5 x55 Swede which has existed for a century. Just manufacturers marketing new sales.

The creedmoor beats the swede with factory ammo easily. If the swede were actually that good, it'd be popular too

As someone who bought a .270 only opportunistically (I found a lovingly cared for 1980s era Remington 700 BDL at a price I couldn't pass up), I have to agree with EVERY point you made. I reload, and I have to seat the bullets WAAAY far out, as bad as for an old Brazilian 7mm Mauser. Even so, my groups with every combination of bullet/powder/charge weight etc. I've tried are 1.5 - 2 moa, fine for hunting at practical (for me) ranges but not for bragging, even on the internet when there are no fact checkers measuring my groups. If I want groups to brag about I'll load up some 6.5x55 Swede and take out my CZ550 or one of my M38s. (I haven't taken the 6.5 Creedmore plunge yet, mainly due to limited safe capacity...) Still, I won't ever sell my .270. The old gal will get it done, perhaps just not as efficiently as some of the other choices. GREAT video, thanks for brightening my evening up! 😊
