I’m a college student at a trade school for auto mechanics and this video helped me so much so I can be able to drive myself to school this coming Monday! Thank you for helping me figure out how to fix my Miata !
I've gained valuable knowledge from your videos; specifically changing the L/R caliper and bleeding the brakes. I didn't know about the parking brake adjustment, so I squeezed the caliper open. Thank you for your excellent videos.
Thanks from the UK, mine blew yesterday from the handbrake, picked up a new one and your video made it very simple, especially tightening up the pads at the end.
One of the better videos I've seen on this, I'll be doing both of mine soon - but it's a lot more difficult working on the street with the car on axle stands - oh how I wish I had a garage, a garage with one of those car hoists would be out of this world, but never happeningfor me. Thanks for the video.
thi sis the best rear miata brake caliper video on YT. so many people go off by any of the other guides that don't even mention the allen adjuster, and most end up using a retraction tool, destroying their calipers and crying on the various FB pages.
I took mine to a brake shop a while back and I don’t think they adjusted the Allen head screw, sometimes I’ll hear a little clunk from the rear when I would go to hit the brakes. Thanks to you I’ll be able to do it myself the right way 👍
Another great video. I did want to ask though. I've adjusted my rear brakes as per your videos information. The issue that I'm running into, adjusting the caliper gears to tight, and the half turn back off, when I apply the parking brake, the car will roll, like the parking brake is only partially working. There is tension compared to the parking brake not being engaged, but slight hills and all bets are off the car is rolling away if not in gear. I've adjusted the adjustment screw at handle in the car, any other recommendations, or perhaps a trouble shooting video for the parking brake system?
Great video! Bolt protecting hex bolt is gone and the adjustment bolt is stuck and I believe stripped. Anyway will be replacing the whole caliper. Thanks for a very clear video!
Thank you so much for the instructional video! I have a 1991 & 1992 Miata MX5 project cars. I will be replacing the left caliper, however, I am trying to find the video on how to bleed the brakes. Can you tell me which one it is?
So you said usually what leaks on these is the ebrake, mine is leaking does that mean the whole caliper needs to be replaced or should I take that bolt off where the pin is and see if it’s loose and tighten it ?
Thanks Al this helped a lot! I was just initially just changing out my pads but as soon as I started retracting the piston using the Allen key my caliper began hemorrhaging brake fluid so it turned into a brake caliper replacement.
@@aracing I did replace with new ones, I figure there may some wear in the old ones so what the hey. New, powder coated refurbished calipers now on rear, correctly installed. Thank you very much sir.
Hey Al, I changed my rear brake pads yesterday, and one of the pistons was pretty stucked, I had to push it back with a c-clamp (gently) while turning the adjuster screw because it didn't move with the adjuster screw alone. I could tight it back though, and it brakes just fine so the piston seems pretty free to move now. But also the adjuster screws (both sides) were pretty grimy, with a really bad smell. I bled all the system but do you think I should change the calipers anyway? Is that a symptom of the beginning of a leak?
I had one the other day with the exact same thing. I did the exact same thing as you. I did notice that the ebrake doesn't work on that side. That is the only symptom I can see. I will be replacing that caliper in the near future.
@@aracing, I race with the NASA specmiata group. Typically I'm just fixing things as I've noticed they've worn down and break. Any things you think need to be replaced as prevention on a seasonal basis? Maybe there is enough info there for a short video?
I let a shop replace my rear calipers and now the pedal is squishy, i can push it to the floor and it doesnt brake very well. After i pump it a few times it becomes normal but a second later when im off the brake it becomes squishy again. Bled the system 3 times and nothing. Any idea?
Two things come to mind, one you are right that it is not bled all the way and two the rear adjusters are not adjusted correctly. I would look at those two items before I move onto a master cylinder. Master cylinder is a long shot.
Helpful if you already know what you're doing... But suggest you actually show what you're looking at /pointing at /touching... Otherwise the viewer has little idea what you're actually doing
i wish i watched your vid before i did my rears today. striped the sdjusted hex screw to shit, by not taking it out and yolo compressing the caliper. oh well .
Thank you very much, This video me alot of pain. Thank you again excellent video.

Best video ever!!! So clear and informative!!
Very helpful video, laidback, not complicated, but delivered the info I needed - great stuff!

Did it start leaking fluid at the ebrake. Ive seen that a few times. Glad I was able to help out.
@@aracing Yup - we call it the handbrake over here! Great video, really clear round the back while it was on the ramp.

First of all, you seem cool as fuck, love the video already and I’m not even 5 minutes in! Thanks for the help and advice
Good video! I'm doing mine, and the sliding pin at 3:40 is totally rounded from the past work on this... How can I extract it please ?

I got far enough on my NC to give up. Sure wish I had seen your video before paying a mech.
I address your comment in the most recent Monday Q&A, check it out: ua-cam.com/video/Z2ebEAey8Qk/v-deo.html
Looks great! Does the Miata vtec?
Yes in 2001 was the first Vtec. My sisters car in the video is a 2004. I don't own any of them. Thank you for the comment and watching Al
thanks man great video!

You should replace both those brass washers? Is it imperative?
Its a good idea, yes i have used the old ones too

Glad it helped
Where did you get the caliper from
O'Reillys
Just liked and subscribed, excellent video I might just do this myself after seeing how simple it is...thank you :)
Thank you very much for doing that.

Hello, when I reattached the Ebrake line to the caliper I had to really pull on the spring so it could sit in its bracket. Is this normal﹖
Was the e brake off?
Do you have any preference on where you get the calipers from?
I have had great luck with OReillys, and they come with a lifetime warranty
