The story about the mother making the quilts for her sons in the military really made me remember my grandmother getting a letter while my uncle was a POW in the Korean War. She worried about him terribly. I can’t recall her crying about him. He did get to come home from the war and lived a long life next to Granny and Pawpaw.

I worked with a very nice lady who was a child during the depression. Once a year, her dad would take her to the feed store with him and she would pick the grain filled feed sacks that would later become her dresses for the next year. I suspect her mother also used the printed feed sacks to make blankets/quilts. She told me after living through the depression and then WWII she never could throw anything away and always looked for ways to repurpose everything.

Thank you once again for sharing the wonderful stories about quilts. My Granma Lilly was a quilter and I am blessed to have three of them. The book by John Rice which you are sharing with us now has made me realize what a treasure I have. I remember coming home from school and and she would be working on one of them in the living room on frames. Sweet memories 💖. Thank you again for sharing your time and energy with us.

My husband bought a quilt for my Christmas gift about 5 years ago from a flea market. It has sunflowers in blocks with yellow and brown edges. The quilt had a note pinned on it telling its story. The quilt was previously owned by a daughter of one of the pastors. It was made in 1952 by the ladies group in London, Arkansas to fund mission projects. Each sunflower petal was embroidered with a church member’s name on it and the middle of the sunflower was brown embroidered with the names of the church’s pastors. Each person paid $1 to have their name embroidered on the quilt. I love it!!! 🌻🌻🌻

I cant quilt anymore but when my daughter was young i took a quilt everywhere i had to take her and i would work on it while i waited for her. Quilts are precious treasures.

Congrats on the new addition to your family! Yay Ira! Beautiful story, my granny was from Sevierville Tn and told us fascinating stories of her early life, her name was Ruby Jane. I treasure the quilt she made for me. My maternal grandmother, Ann Helen was a first generation polish immigrant and she made me a crochet Afghan. Both gifted me, the oldest granddaughter of 33 with these treasured gifts, I look forward to meeting them again.

Quilts are pretty awesome. I'm not a tailor, but I can certainly appreciate the work that goes into making one. My mom gave me a quilt that her mom made her for her wedding in the late 70s, when I first started trucking. It's still doing a great job of keeping me warm almost 50 years later. That's helpful, because I never really understood what real cold is before I went to Wyoming in the winter.

The family photos you showed made me recall when my 3 brothers and I were young a photographer would come to our home each year and take a photo of the four of us. We would always be posed sitting in a row. It wasn't until later in life that my mom told me we were sitting on her ironing board that had been lowered and covered with a blanket or sheet the photographer brought with him.

As I think I've told you before, my grandmother Chase had quilts aplenty in her house in Peterborough NH. I remember looking at them but because I was very young I never appreciated them. I don't know what happened to them. But I think a great deal of quilting as a skill and art that many women practiced.

I have a story about one of the quilts my mom inherited. I forget how many "greats" our grandmother was, but back in the civil war, troops came through and commandeered food and her quilts. She took a shotgun to their camp and talked to the captain of that brigaide and told him it was ok they took the food, but please give the quilts back. He did and my mom has one of them. It hung in the 5 points museum here in cleveland a few years ago when they haa display of quilts from the area!

I have a quilt made by mom, no details on who might have helped. She embroidered names from family and Church family in the blocks. One block has my cousins name, Charles B, one year old. Hes a few months older than me, Im 78. Its a common quilt made with love. Cotton batting Im sure and still in good shape. I have a smaller Dutch Doll pattern she made also. A tack quilt she made 1975. I made a few quits and throw covers for my children and grands, nothing fancy. Enjoyed! ❤ Patti

I gotta speak on the "slave quilts." I'm speaking from 6+ generations of personal family recorded history and boring undergrad / grad school education. My mother's family, which is partially (on the US part) Appalachian, had a number of quilters. But one great aunt was our champion. That's my beloved ppl from S. Carolina.
Back in time of enslaved quilters, many of us Black and Melungeon Appalachian folk (Dad's side) had *no* where to turn after we were released from being hostages. Wasn't safe to wander for most. In other words, even antebellum free colored folks HAD to live in. It wasn't by choice. You had to lean in to SURVIVE. Quilting teaches patience, i was taught.... clearly I don't quilt!
My family was luckier than others bc of our Revolutionary era Nigerian, European and Cherokee bloodlines, and therefore, lifelines among VA and SC state-mandated guardians/chaperones/"representatives" in order to stay "free."
Any Black quilt made at that time, no matter how true the love, no matter if she stayed by "choice," was done under emotional duress.
I love my Western VA on North section of Appalachia, Ms. Tipper ❤️, but Aunt Sweet's quilt is on my bed RIGHT NOW, and I had to tell HER/OUR story. Perhaps those girls were kind when others were not, but to live under someone's roof as a permanent servant with no other prospects *because* you are Black and it is 1865 - no. Consider the quilter's position, too, in further detail. With GREAT affection!❤

I can so I can hand stitch I can do ball gowns of the 6th 1864 65 in that area but quilting I have never accomplished that. Just wished that I knew how quilt, there are no groups around me that I know of. Teams in very beautiful quilts some ordinary and some very lavish.
