What to know about Canada’s new Pharmacare bill

- The Liberal-NDP supply-and-confidence deal has passed another test. The two parties managed to table a pharmacare bill before the March 1 deadline. But the compromise legislation is a limited program, supplying universal, single-payer coverage to only two classes of drugs.
Marieke Walsh, the Globe’s Senior Political Reporter, explains how the program will work and how much it will cost.

the better question is why does Canada have one of the highest prices for drugs
A better question is who fed you this lie and why do you choose to believe it? Us prices are on average 256% higher.
This is NOT a Pharmacare Bill, in fact it is Barely a promise to Look at if a Pharmacare program is even possible. This is in NO WAY a promise to make this happen. At best they are going to take a look at it, this is why Christia Freeland would NOT respond when asked about funding, because there is NOTHING in the budget for it, nor will there be. And if after a year or two of study they deem it possible, this must still go through multiple readings in the house as well as multiple readings in the Senate and many months in Committee. At best, and I will put emphasis on "AT BEST" the NDP may see something in way of a "Real Pharmacare Bill" come out in about 2 years, but not sooner. In other words, (and I'm sorry to say but) the NDP voters got NOTHING.
Correct... even the simplest of bills don't get pasted in less than 2 years
I would MUCH RATHER have NATURAL HEALTH PRODUCTS and SERVICES covered.. we'd be MUCH HEALTHIER as a population!!! (less MAID needed too)
Exactly!! Its just a bill saying they gonna examine some health stuff. Nothing concrete and zero specifics.
@@snowbird6855Heads up Trudeau has just made a deal with Big pharma to bring in legislation to control the labeling, sale and availability of natural products and supplements.
It makes zero sense to have a healthcare system that pays for the diagnosis of a serious health issue but won’t pay for the meds to treat it. My father was diagnosed with diabetes but OHIP wouldn’t pay for the meds he needed to live and we were too strapped to pay out of pocket. Guess what happened?
Freeland just said on recent interview that they will follow the Fall Economic Budget last year. So meaning no Pharmacare this year.
Holland said the same ...not this year .
It doesn't exist. Freeland already said they're not even planning funds for it🤣👌
They signed a pharmaceutical wedge issue!
Overstepping into provincial jurisdiction again Healthcare is provincial matter not federal!
National security is a federal matter which they are doing nothing about!
Wrong on all counts.
@@gibletoid
What’s wrong?
It is absolutely a wedge issue. I’m one of those middle-class hard-working people, and my wife works, but we never get any benefits for that including this. It’s just another tax.
Healthcare is absolutely the sole responsibility of each province. The healthcare transfer payments come from each province to the federal government, where they take out their “tax” and then redistribute the rest of it to other provinces.
They signed a agreement , two and a half pages , saying they would discuss it . There is no agreement .

TWO things: Can we not roll out an education campaign that carbohydrates contribute to metabolic syndrome, hence T2D? With the reduction of carbohydrates in peoples diets, the need for medication will decrease as well. (Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. Sarah Hallberg)
I am walking around on ONE leg (right below knee amputation) as a result of cancer, would love to see prosthetics cover an adequate prosthetic, above “basic function.” I have a specialized “elevated vacuum” prosthetic that pharmacare will not fund, the very device that keeps me up, mobilizing & engaging in life tasks to keep me healthy, there by decreasing my burden on the healthcare system. (I am from BC).
Not all carbs. However, you are right about education. After finally getting to see a doctor, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, and pre-diabetes as well as being over weight. After a month of low carbs and intermittent fasting, I lost 17 lbs, my hgA1C are back to normal and my blood pressure is down. I use a glucose monitor to track the foods I eat and how they affect me. Dr. Jason Fung is an excellent resource. I wish I had this info 10 years ago. Preventive medicine on metabolic syndrome would save millions of health care dollars. Processed food consumption is destroying peoples health.
@@mickymiller6130 Me too, sort of. I'm a 75 yo man in BC, and a decade ago I began rapidly gaining weight [too many giant slabs of carrot cake - I have a wonderful recipe & love to cook]. My wife pointed me at a couple of modern diet books & I now eat one meal a day [early evening meat & potato style meal.] My morning starts with a mug of "bulletproof" coffee [using coconut oil as the added fat] as a hunger suppressant, and I follow what I casually call a keto-light diet. No sugars, no soft drinks, no seed oils, no wheat products [breads, cakes, cookies, pasta], but moderate amounts of animal fats [whole milk, butter, lard, tallow.] Occasional feasts of bacon, eggs & fried potato slices. Lots of fresh fruits & veggies in season. Canned Alaska pink salmon once a week in a big green salad. Works for me - my belly fat is gone & my knees & hips no longer complain. Your mileage may vary, of course. Eat only when you hunger, drink only when you thirst, etc etc.
Carbohydrates are a problem for a small number of people, also babysitting people at lunch isn't the governments job

I'm so happy to still not have access to healthcare but get to pay more for other people to get it.
When I do my income taxes every year, I add up all my medical expenses, including both dental & pharmaceuticals, for use in reducing my payable income tax. Does this not count toward the question of "who will pay for it?" If my dental & drug costs are now to be paid explicitly by the federal government, I expect that when my medical expenses deduction inevitably disappears, I'll be paying more income tax which the feds will use to pay my medical expenses. This is simply a "from Peter to pay Paul" money juggle. Note that the extra work for the back room bureaucrats working on this file will ALSO come from my increased income tax. Cui bono? All that changes is which level of government gains more power...
Too little too late ! Most companies include a health care plan .
Well on the outside of the rock where many of us live, there’s temp full time, part time, contract positions that may not include benefits. In fact, some employers refuse to create full time positions because they don’t want to pay benefits. Kudos though because you sounded so sure of yourself.
DRUG plan. It has NOTHING TO DO with health.
There’s no money allotted in the budget for this year or next year for the Farmer care bill. This is a farce.

After awhile all this meaningless chatter starts to sound like the teacher from the Charlie Brown cartoons. What is happening to Canada? Every year it's another roadblock, problem and issue that just keeps piling up and nothing concrete and actionable is actually done.
There is a two and a half page agreement , 5 pages in total because it's also in French so as the news reported online they agree to discuss it . There is no deal , it's liberal / N.D.P. political rhetoric thing .

It’s not meant for tax paying Canadian citizens
How so?
If you’re paying taxes, then you have a decent job, then you probably have a health plan from your employer.
The kicker is that most employer health car plans are still paid by the employee.
I was paying 62$every cheque at my last job for my medicine and come to find out without coverage my pills are $17.38.
I was paying $120 a month to save $18…
@@jgriffin282Not always...some people work full time and cannot afford all those bi-weekly deductions and therefore cannot afford their company's benefits plan. It happens.

Terrible for Canadians with insurance !! The feds will cover less…
This is not an actual pharmacare bill. This is an act to LOOK at the future, not the present. You are looking at more bureaucracy. The pharmacare is not in the budget, according to Freeland, and it will not be in place for at least 2 years.
Canada has more government employees, per province, then the U.S., per state. Buying voter's, it seems.
so easy to be generous with people's tax money !
how much tax you pay? you know no one with diabetes?
Its a start. If it does what it claims it will be a good start.
There is no claim, it is for citizens paying their own health plans, they also will pay for others; fine print is important.
I expect it to be a nothing burger. This way Singh can say they did something to keep supporting Trudeau. Singh is more of the reason we are in this situation in Canada. He’s to blame just as much as Trudeau.
Statistically, Canadians take more meds per person than any other nationality in the world, yet our level of general health is about in the mid to low ratings compared to other countries. The older you are in Canada, the more medications you take and the poorer your level of health.
We are living, as some doctors point out, in the Age of Excess: too much food (overeating), too much alcohol consumption and too many drugs (legal or illegal). All contributing to a poor quality of life on the Medical Carousel with self-inflicted abuse on people's health.
Other than basic class drug coverage, the government should not dive too deep down the Pharmaceutical Rabbit Hole. It will only result in more drug abuse, dependency and wastage. People should take some responsibility for their own health and live more sensibly. If they don't, then let them pay for the consequences.
You can compare this scenario to free booze at a wedding. More is consumed, wasted and unappreciated when people get it for free.
It's just human nature.
It’s one more thing I get to pay for that I don’t get.
I’m not sure why Liberals feel that hard-working middle-class people, have to do all the work for everybody else?
If you didn’t earn it, you just don’t get it
What will this do the already enormous national debt?
How nice. Now all those who do not use birth control or have diabetes that may be dealing with their own problems in paying for the medications that they need will also have to help out the group that was included. Oh, that's fair, right?
yes it does. wait till you get diabetes or a loved one does.

Got news for you but if affordability is a serious concern for you, pharmacare makes sense.
@@professorakiba434 I've got news also. They didn't say where the money is coming from to implement this. Just more of the same methodology and we see what this leads to. Just look at our deficit and the overwhelming taxes we pay.
I like that diabetes gets the pharma care, but why contraceptive? Aren't women supposed to have kids since our population is aging? We need kids instead of immigrants. Having kids or not is a personal choice, not a sickness.
They're ok with us being poor and starving.. they're not ok with us being too poor to afford birth control. Heaven forbid we contribute to more humans being born, that would go against their depopulation plans. They just threw diabetes in there to make it seem like they care about our health concerns. It's about keeping birth rates low at all costs (for those who are lucky enough to still be fertile and able to conceive).

We all pay for it.
@@mueezadam8438Oh I understand the idea is good, it the reality is grim. We’re not paying for this, we’ll be putting it on our national credit card.
