  • In 1976 two British soldiers completed the first successful all military expedition to the summit of Everest. To celebrate this endeavour, the Army return 30 years later to conquer Everest once more. The plan: To tackle the peak via the treacherous "West Ridge", a notoriously dangerous climb that has only been completed by 19 people.

Lincoln Hall wasn left for dead by his sherpas. They tried to push carry and rise him back up for more than 4 hours. And they already stood on the summit. Eventually they had to give up because they were almost out of oxygen and would've died themselves. Disappointing to hear such accusations. Sherpas are often the real heroes

They waited next to him for another while trying to shake him back up and nothing happened. They even poked his wide open eye and obtained exactly zero response of any kind so they assumed he was dead and walked away. They heard about him only the next day as Osborne and company found him conscious and moving around with his down suit to his waist up the second step setting up his "boat."
He really was left for dead, and his sherpas did indeed heroically stay with him for a long time trying to get him down.

Sadly, all this money and chances of dying, some ways horrifically (like the poor lady who fell 6000 feet to her death in a crevasse). And sure, it would be great to tell people, "I climbed Mount Everest!", but is it worth it? The most famous people from Everest are the ones who died, not the ones who lived to summit (or failed to). I am fascinated by this, but I would never attempt this.
Not worth the chance of frostbite, death, and widowing my wife along with leaving my two kids behind. I like my limbs where they are, can think of a heck of a lot of better ways to spend my money, and would not want to be a frozen corpse 28,000 feet and thousands of miles from my family and friends.
I just do not get the allure, but the real heros are the Sherpas who very often put themselves in harms way to save people (or recover frozen corpses, horrible!). Everest is beautiful, not as much as K2 and such but it was much better before humans decided to pollute it with garbage!
The bottom line is, accept the fact you might not make it back climbing, all it takes is a weather shift, mistake, sickness, or avalanche and you are a goner or losing limbs.

Rick Simon well stated! I guess I just don’t understand it, the real climbers are the sherpas clearly they should get better pay!

I love watching these Vids human endurance is what I see and the payoff is watching a team's plan fall into place. As for the sherpa's they are paid to do a risky job much respect to them as long as no one was hurt. Stopping short of the summit must be the most frustrating the view is the same I'm positive of that. But to reach the top you and I know life will be so much sweeter ego comes much later I would think.

So Bunting selected himself to summit? That doesn't seem fair.

The leader doesn't stay behind while others risk their life. He had to go up.

@@JVL1988 Chris Bonington (i.e. a real climber) never put himself in the summit team

They just walk after what the Sherpa's has done, is this the British Army?
Reinold Messner did it it on his own, without any oxygen. He even crossed the top and went down on the east side. That was a hero, a real climber.
The west bridge is only not climbed so much as the east for political reasons. From Kathmandu it was not possible for years. Nepal earns a lot of money, let crazy amount of people try, so most people go from Nepal. Is also very very dangerous. Off course the sherpa's do the work. I do not think the West bridge is so much more difficult or dangerous, it is more difficult to get a permit.
