- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

- THE ROCK SHED -
I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

You have mastered the comedic genre of deadpan toothbrush humor.
Thank you. that has been my goal.
Hey, at least they’ll smell minty fresh. 🤣 Love this came out beautiful. ❤
It's good to have nice smelling rocks.
Here it is!!! You are awesome!
Holy cow Rob! You keep showing us new stuff!! Reminds me of some of the car video cutting out parts. quite fascinating!
I’ve been having fun experimenting with this. I’m happy with the Montana agate results, now I need to work on some other rock types.
Gorgeous❤job. I like how the community shares advise for new applications with each other.
I like that too. It's easier to figure things out if we all pitch in.
They look great, and I love the new sign!
Thanks, Patty.
I like the heart with the cross. ❤
I like that one too.
Well that is quite interesting to see. And it looks really good. Nice to hear the excellent guitarist.
Thanks!
Wow...those are so stunning!
That is soooo much better than the masking tape.
Yes, there was no charring around the edges like with tape.
They almost look like glass, I like those moss-agates when polished. Toothpaste, ok, yeah, we never get to old to learn new stuff😉 It went out very nice.
Montana agates polish very nicely.
Very nice Rob. Love the tips and tricks as well, I guess that’s an advantage in having a channel, you pickup some great ideas from viewers.
Yes, I'm learning stuff all the time. I appreciate people reciprocating with the ideas.
Excelente me alegro que todo esté bien, desde Panamá tu amigo Elías, todavía no has encontrado ese diamante, bueno a otra cosa sigue en tú búsqueda lo encontrarás.😀👍👋👋👋👏👏👏
Mañana saldré a buscar diamantes.

We're supposed to get 19 inches over the weekend in Alpena.
No cavities for those cabs😅 this is super cool. Groovy cabs Rob 😉😊👍
Nope, they're pearly white!
You came a long way my friend. I remember when there was a handful of us watching. Now you have on Heck of following. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, John.
Really beautiful work. Funny how the toothpaste works😁👍❤️🇫🇮
Toothpaste is so much better than tape was. More fun too.
I wanted to hear a lot more of that guitar. Or should I say, that guitar "rocks"! You have a talented neighbor! Great vid as always.

Who'da thought lasering rock's. Wow cool stuff Rob. Love the Heart and cross beautiful faith statement. Cheer's JV
It wasn't something I had been thinking about, but I am now.
Cool laser. That guy plays a mean guitar. Maybe next time he will play a whole song😊
We’ll see. Maybe I need to give him more picks for more song.
Thank you for your video! It's so cool! Love those works!
Cool seeing your progression with the laser! Enjoyed the sound demo too.
It's been fun to learn. I need to start playing with other materials now.
Thank you for sharing your process . All of these are beautiful and unique.
Nice work and smells minty fresh! 😅
Once again, great job, Rob, and thanks for sharing your projects.
Hey, Hey! Good Job
Although I prefer the natural beauty of the stones, still very pretty with the laser etching.
Something different anyhow. I wouldn't want to do this to all of them, but I like it for a change.
those picks do sound good even on an acoustic- like that heart cross engraving - super cool 👍
That's good to know they work well on acoustic guitars too. I don't play, so I wouldn't know.
very cool
Those are cool Rob! Nice job.
Thanks!
Love it. Well toothpaste has fluoride, which has Fluorite 😉🤷🤙🏼🏵️💚😁
Ah, nice mineral connection that I hadn't thought of!
Those turned out so well! I love the butterfly one! Great video!
Very very cool video!
Thanks!
I have found a sturdy microcrystaline quartz jasp-agate makes the best picks and you can make them even thiner. I find it is worth it to break test the material before final shaping too. Then you find the flaws before someone potentially gets cut on a sharp break.
Trying to break them ahead of time is a good idea. Thanks.
They were smart giving you that to review. I feel much more comfortable making a big purchase when I can see a demo and get tips from someone like you. Excellent work!
Are you openibg an Etsy shop to sell your stuff? I still want to get some of your Christmas ornaments.
I don't have an Etsy shop, but I do sell them at a local shop. They still have some ornaments in the store. They don't have an online store, but will work with you if you call or email. olivetbookandgift.com
Try warming your rocks just a bit so the heat isn’t such a shock when the lazer hits, who knows it might sharpen the melted edge of the image too. 🤷♀️
Are you just speculating about this, or is it something you've tried? I ask because I'm not sure how to heat them and keep them hot while they engrave. What you say makes sense though.
That kind of makes sense. When welders weld cast iron they preheat it first.

Your wife’s toothbrush 🪥 😂
😂
I didn't even mention whose it was this time. How'd you know?
Hey, Rob ✌️. Thanks a lot, now I need a laser😊. I taught myself the gimp photo manipulation program, and I love playing around with colors and designs, so when I saw your screen with all those numbered colors at the bottom, I was wondering if those are colors you can etch with 🤔. So, can you?😊
As always, thank you for sharing and showing. ✌️👍
No, those are layers in the program. So each color is for a different cutting speed and power. That's how I was able to do the oval in one pass and then switch that off to do the flower after.
@@MichiganRocks ahh, very cool 😎 👌
Recommend trying black tempera paint; then try zinsser 123 bullseye primer (to compare as alternatives to toothpaste)
Do you think that would work better than the toothpaste? I was pretty happy with how that worked and it was so easy to clean off.
😍😍😍
That’s fantastic ! Have you had any more break ? I wonder if you made more passes at a lower power rate if it would stop that.
❤❤❤
That's pretty interesting. If toothpaste works, have you tried using zinc oxide? Something like Desitin cream zinc oxide for treating diaper rash in babies is pure white and very sticky.
No, I have only tried masking tape and toothpaste. Do you think Desitin would perform different that toothpaste?
Link for that tool for cleaning the toothpaste off? Awesome little twist to the hobby! Thank you for sharing!
That tool was a toothbrush.
@@MichiganRocks lol!
Do you sell the picks? If so, how much? My daughters father plays guitar 🎸
I do sell them, although I only have one etched one for sale. I dropped it off at the shop a couple days ago. They don't have an online store, but will work with you if you call or email. olivetbookandgift.com
Awesome will that heart pendant be for sale ?.....I just love the tree and stockings I picked up this year .
It was, but it is already gone. I might make more in the future, but not anytime soon. I have too many other things I'm working on right now.
Can you change the color, or is it just based on the rock?
It's just on a rock by rock basis. So far I have only seen black and white, but I haven't tried too many rocks. I think epidote etched black.
@@MichiganRocks, so the white color isn't from the toothpaste, but from the lazer?
@@NeroKosonen It's the laser on that particular rock, nothing to do with the toothpaste. I engraved gray rocks and the etched area was black.
Great video, I tried making guitar picks, but you do need a certain thickness, or they will break😢.
I think the type of rock is important too. Montana and Brazilian agates seem like good choices.
@@MichiganRocks I'm glad it's working out for you!👍🏻👍🏻
This was so interesting and beautiful. Where is your shop located, please
I sell a few things at a place called "Olivet Book and Gift" in Alpena. They don't have an online store, but will work with you if you call or email. olivetbookandgift.com
Would adding a mineral to the toothpaste mix color the design?
I don’t think so.
🙋♀️❤️
Is the engraving white because of the toothpaste? Did you choose white? Or can it be any color? Thanks
No, the toothpaste is just to give the laser something to focus on. Masking tape also works, but leaves burn marks around the edges.
Why is the engraving white on all these stones? Is it possible to get black or gray colored engraving on agates?
I'm pretty new to this, but I don't think you can change the color. When I engraved dark gray rocks, the engraved part turned black.
Why does it completely fill in the outline of the flower, it looked like your drawing was an outline of a flower, not filled in.@@MichiganRocks
@@josephroark9236 That's a setting on the laser. You can do it either way.
To. Is there a way to buy your picks?
Yes, I sell them at a local shop. They don't have an online store, but will work with you if you call or email. olivetbookandgift.com
@@MichiganRocks I will be reaching out soon Rob! Thank you so much!
How thick are your cabs
About a quarter inch.
Do you sell these ? I’d love a marker for my dogs grave and something to memorialize my mom .. she love butterflies . My daughter play guitar also so pics maybe .
I sell them at a local shop. I think the butterfly is still available, and I have guitars picks there. They don't have an online store, but will work with you if you call or email. olivetbookandgift.com
Have you tried Aluminum oxide in a alcohol base to coat the stones. It works well with glass and tiles. I have not tried clear acrylic though. use a spray bottle and use thin coats about three. thier are you tubes on using it.
I'll have to look that up. The toothpaste worked great though.
Less power more pases
So it sunk down
The engraved part is actually raised.
