That Chris guy sounds smart. Looks like you managed WAY better than your xcarve.
Haha! You were right Chris!
I DID IT!
I loved your excitement over what it could do. It’s a great machine. I want to se your reaction to the rotary.
Yes I just got one and it is very addictive
I would strongly suggest an enclosure for it. It only takes a single moment of exposure from a stray reflection to cause permanent eye damage. Plus an enclosure would make proper ventilation easier.
Also alignment would be way easier! It seems Peter has been reliably placing the crosshairs a bit to the right of where he needs to be.
Please please do this, there was a small pebble that must have landed onto our work surface (probably from having it near the floor and picking it up and placing it on the machine) and when thr laser hit it it reflected and my pop has a permanent spot in his vision now because of this. What we use now is not an enclosure but actually 4 lightweight broom heads that brush the surface as it works and also acts as a shield incase of any bounced light
He stated at the end he already bought one for it.
I'm shocked you are allowed to sell these without an enclosure and a bunch of enclosure must be closed safety switches.
But... you could just use laser goggles, no? Isn't that actually safer than relying on an enclosure?
Edit:I should say, a good pair. I know some are absolute garbage
It makes total sense that someone made sure to talk to you about the air assist. It's surprisingly very important for a laser, if dust gets on the lens it can be disastrous.
Tip to extend laser module life, try to burn/cut on lower power for longer rather then high power and faster, because they have can a really short lifespan at higher power (and they are expensive)
how expensive per replacement?
This advice only applies to co2 lasers, it makes no difference with diode lasers
This looks really cool and I'm looking forward to seeing future projects with it. I'm kinda surprised/disappointed the safety features don't come standard, though; I'd rather have to pay more to engrave cylindrical objects than pay more to see and breathe.
I imagine you could "set" the flexible wood into a certain shape by filling the cavities with resin, or just wood glue. You could make very organic fluid shapes that way! How about a wooden hat? Maybe some fun armor, like a pauldron? Furniture would be awesome, but not sure how you would scale it up.
Cutting positive and negative spaces of images in different colored materials/wood and then combining them like puzzle pieces? For extra flair, make them flexible. Privacy screens/shades for windows with decorative patterns that create fun shadows, lampshades, wine racks.
I have a lot of ideas, but my favorite: Snakes have interesting scale patterns, do you think they would bend into the shape of a snek?
I would love to see living hinges set into place via resin, that sounds amazing. Would be interesting to see how it reacted to different methods as well. Cut, stabilizing resin, and then resin resin maybe? Or could you do the stabilizing before the cut without issue?
If you all have ideas, suggestions, or questions I would love to hear them. I'm such a beginner with this!
You should turn a wood ring or bracelet and engrave a pattern into it with the laser and the spinning mount!
Make sure you have high quality protective glasses rated for the wavelength the laser uses
So one cool thing I've been doing with my laser is going to the craft store and getting 16x12 painting canvas' (any size that will fit in the laser area works for this). Using spray paint I put down my main color (say red) going both directions (top to bottom, left to right). Next is a layer of black spray paint done the exact same way. With that prepped, I went and found an image of Vader facing to the side, put it into Imag-R, cropped & resized it to the specs I want (typically a half inch less than the material), and then tell it that the material I'm using is Norton White tile painted Black.
It will invert the image so that the darker spots are what comes out as the color under the black. Save the file, put it into Lightburn then make sure to enable pass through, set the power between 21-30% (depending on the strength of your laser) and a speed of around 1000/mms. This is a link to my
ibb.co/6Hd1VjM - This is the Vader I just finished, I went lighter on the red to match an Obi-Wan I'd also done.
Engraving resin sounds like a terrible idea... So exactly something you would try😉
The enclosure will help with the fumes and smoke but you'd probably be better served with an actual exhaust out of the building, a dryer vent and inline fan would do the trick and not break the bank. If you are wanting to get into acrylic you'll need to get a C02 laser, a K40 or something like that, the diode lasers just don't work on the correct wavelength to cut Acrylic properly.
If you want a frosted glass effect, paint black tempera paint on the glass and then laser it. The paint washes right off and you get a frosted effect where it lasered. On my 10W laser I use 100 power 70mm/s speed. do some test patterns to dial in a look you like on your specific laser. I do pint glasses all the time with my rotary attachment. The honeycomb will help a lot with reducing smoke residue on cuts.
You can also replicate this by laying a wet piece of tissue paper over the glass and then engraving your pattern, leaves behind white frosted glass where the laser engraves.
I applaud that you’ve ordered an enclosure, air vent, and honey comb. These open air diode lasers always make me nervous. I’ve been running a CO2 laser for the last 10+ years, and when I compare the amount of safety precautions and things built into my setup to these open-air diode machines I’ve seen become popular in recent years, it just boggles my mind how slack people are with the safety measures.
Also glad you’ve gotten some better safety glasses. I’ve heard the cheapo ones that come with machines like these are barely more than colored plastic.
Despite all that, I have heard positive things about the xtool machines.
Hope you have fun with it!
Gets a laser cutter.
Immediately makes an adorable picture of himself and Mrs. Brown. 😂❤
She's not in near enough videos
Dammit. Another tool to my never-ending shopping list.
neat little machine love how it literally prints pictures on hard surface
May I say, I absolutely love how involved your wife is in your videos. It honestly warms my heart.
Oh you've jumped down a rabbit hole now, the things you can do are awesome!
I'm so excited to see what your projects are using this!
Awesome video, but these open frame lasers are terrifying. One mistake can blind yourself or worse a loved one. I'm glad you mentioned an enclosure at the end, and I can't wait to see it!
And don't forget pets that may wander in.
But maybe you'll blind an assassin who is closing in for the kill. So if you think about it it could save your life!
I really feel like having at least 3 pairs of goggles for guests and signs that say "if the laser is on you must have goggles on" is necessary either way. You can't be too safe I suppose but relying on an enclosure feels like relying on one of those safety stops for buzz saws rather than general shop safety, you know?
That being said, he absolutely needs a fume extractor so it may as well be laser safe
@@skeetsmcgrew3282 Enclosures are usually wired to kill the machine when opened. Fume extraction is very important as well as you've noted.
@@viru52000 Ooooh, well crap I'm just now finding out the laser I worked with was rigged af 😂. Literally just had a door made of the same laser proofed plastic as the enclosure.
Wow, looks like an awesome machine. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
I'm so excited to see you use this! I have the m1 and I LOVE IT. it's so cool to be able to do so many things with such a nice machine!
YOU GOT AN X-TOOL!!!! Oh the many projects you are gonna make!
Well Sir, once again you have managed to impress the stuffings ripe plum out of me. AWESOME AWESOME JOB!!! BRAVO 👏👏👏
im so excited to see what projects you use this for, its going to be awesome i know that much
It's fascinating how it feels like I can smell this video haha Excited to see what you have planned!
Great acquisition, Peter!
Excited for what you’re gonna do! Congrats
Thanks for the review. It's nice to see a review from someone who hasn't run a lot of lasers before since that is the boat I'm in. I've been looking at xTool lasers for a while and I really like their new 40W module but mostly because of the better integrated air assist input. When I watched the installation of the air assist nozzle on other channels, it seemed easy to mess up. I probably wouldn't need the 40W and right now it only comes as an upgrade kit so you have to buy a 5/10/20W kit and buy the 40W upgrade separately so I'm waiting for either new 5/10/20W modules with the integrated air assist or a 40W kit.
Love your stuff Peter thanks for sharing!
Well, this could be an exciting time to be a subscriber! I'm looking forward to what you have planned! Please, please share whatever you do, even if you don't think it's a fit for your usual content. It's a really cool technology that is fascinating to watch.
I've done several things with lasers and it's always best to keep a notebook with the material and settings.
Doing pictures on glass it's always best to mirror the picture that way the unpainted portion faces you and you can do a contrast color like an off white to give it an old timey look.
Something that really helped with my laser was a test square, on the horizontal line i had speed, on the vertical line i had power in increments of 10%. This will give you a grid of speed/power and the color it makes. I can also suggest lightburn to you. It has a free month trial but i think it's definately worth buying.
That paisley suit in your picture is badass
Wow, , what a fantastic job it makes!!! I love these machines!
I'm glad you got the upgraded goggles and ordered the enclosure. Watching the paint and aluminium be engraved, it made my lungs quiver.
Ok here's an idea. Have a material that has layers of different colors, and have the machine remove the layers to create a colored image. The Vault Boy would be a good test.
That would take an unbelievable amount of tweaking and testing but should be totally doable. The colors would need to be made of something that wouldn't really burn, maybe a car paint?
Yeah, otherwise it won't matter what color as all becomes black
I love this Peter it looks like a quality piece of kit and pretty easy to set up and use too which is always a bonus. I’d love to see how resin reacts to it so maybe start with multicoloured pour over a flat surface then cover that with a black layer and see if the laser can remove the black to show a multicoloured picture below. Hope that makes sense 👍🏻
Like Old School Scratch Paper, what a solid idea. I like it, hope Peter see this.
I’m excited to see more projects out of Peter. This channel is known to try new things.I’ve notice others channels that show it once and we never see it again. It could be because their viewers are the type who come to see one thing only, no flexibility on change 😄
It's not the viewers that dictate the popularity of content on a channel. It's the UA-cam algorithm.
@@tylergarza8695 perhaps I didn’t make myself clear….I subscribe to channels that are wood turners, they only turn wood …. they’ve demonstrated this tool on their channel, never to be seen again. Why, because some of their channel members make it very clear they are not there to see a laser tool. I’ve seen comments, people like to control content. I love versatility, flexibility. I watch a channel for the person’s ability to catch my attention then it’s content is next. I don’t care how a big channel gets if the creator can grab my attention. I’m a big No.
Maybe a project where you make the material flexible, mold it to a shape, and lock it into that form with resin?
Very cool. I've been interested in one of these for a while. It's nice to see a review by someone I already follow. I'd be interested to see how well it handles leather.
I gotta say that the glass etch or you and Mrs Brown at 6:57 was great. I haven't watched pass that yet.
I would love to see your take on laser projects! I could really use some inspiration for my own projects
You might try putting a picture of a landscape in the back of the frame with the etched black spray paint.
So glad to see another video best channel fsfs
Forget the new tool. I wanna know more about his paisley suit! Love your stuff Peter. Very entertaining and inspiring.
Boys and their toys! Have fun!
Soo many possibilities
You leave the birds out of this, Great video!
I've had a K40 for a few years and looking to upgrade. The xTool is on my short list and I can't wait to see what you burn with this machine.
Thanx for the demonstriation of the Eck Stool!
Snazzy machine, can't wait to see what you make next 🤔
that looks awesome
That thing would be so fun to put together
holy shit i haven't seen you in years saw something on tiktok that reminded me of the video where you use metal shavings and black resin to create a bowl and it just brought me back here i missed you're content so much
Thanks for stopping by!
I do love this. I’d take rainy California weather in a heartbeat instead of this Michigan weather. Lol. Thank you for sharing.
you and your misses remind me of the show tool time :)
Before I even clicked on the video and just saw the thumbnail, I said to myself Oooo someone's got themselves a new laser cutter/ printer lol. Congrats man, can't wait to see what you make with it
I went oohhh a new woodworking video from Mr. Brown...he'd make an awesome shop teacher.
Sooo many ideas to combine laser cut pieces with resin 😀
(colorfull lampshades, flat curved piece of wood lasered in sections that can be folded up into a bowl shape and then embed it in resin and turn it)
Love your videos man
Id love a bowl made of that living hinge design. Maybe one of those shallow fruit bowls.
Definitely better than the laser module I got for my tiny CNC machine, having the larger bed clearly makes a difference. Would be good to see how the 40W version handles acrylic.
Definitely keep doing projects with the the laser peter it's freaking awesome I love lasers!
It can't be a coincidence that I got an ad for this thing literally before the video when watching on console
I would be interested in seeing how it works on printer paper, leather, slate and copper sheeting.
Could you use it to make business cards? Perhaps out of aluminium?
Could you engrave a die and subsequently make prints from it?
Can you set the focal length and engrave into a substance but not through it like a Dvd?
Way to keep things interesting Pete!
All of these things are possible!
been looking for something to customize leather goods with. this looks intriguing.
That's really cool
"I want to be able to make little cavities... And , I mean, obviously hopefully fill them with different things..."
😉
I can't wait to see these cavities and what you choose to fill them with!!!
somehwere I found a cool 'swatch' of different living hinge designs to cut and try. to be fair the standard one you see a lot seemed to be the best performance for flex on a single axis. I've had decent success using a laser to cut stencils from tape to use as interesting masks etc. laser are cool
There's a laser cutter at a library close by me and I can tell you that with the right settings you can absolutely make the wood picture look like the other two
Pretty gnarly awesome laser machine, X-Tool you got there, NOICEEE!! 🤙🏼👍🏼
I just built mine, have the honeycomb and the air assist as well. Just here for tips!!
Neat machine. That rotary tool would make me quite cautious in an open frame machine. So many odd angles to catch a stray reflection from! If it were my machine, I'd rig the enclosure to cut power when the lid is opened.
ooooooo Mr. Brown got a new toy!
Also, a paisley jacket? Pretty bold.
i.imgur.com/aoIBk5o.jpg
I would love to see you put the spinning attachment through it's paces, since you know so much about spinning.
You should try etching the giant magnifying glass with this to see if it makes it more powerful!
Love the Vault Boy im a Massive Fallout Fanboy💛💙
Sky net has a LASER! We're doomed.
Joking aside, I look forward to future projects.
Remember to clean the lens on the reg and a light touch with rubbing alcohol with clear soot no issues. Mostly.
Have fun!
I don't need one of those, but I really, really want one.
Honestly, I've been saying the same thing for years. I'm really excited to try out some ideas!
If you did 3 individual glass panes with the three primary colors as filters in the software, when you shine white light thru them, it should be a color when you stack them.
when you mentioned the leathery Texture of the wood it made me wonder if you could try and make a cool book cover
I would make "cushions" with the flexible wood. It would make for a expectation defying experience.
I grinned so hard at the print of you and your wife.
The paisley jacket is my favorite.
i.imgur.com/aoIBk5o.jpg
@@peterbrownwastaken quite the dapper look.
That was a very informative video. Thanks for that, because I have been wondering whether I should get one. Curious of your recommendation between this and the Sculpfun S30 pro max 20W.
Wooden fantasy armor! You can make flexible wood. You could totally be a wood shop knight!
Use Tempura paint on glass and ceramics. That allows the laser to etch them and then the paint simply washes off.
I wonder if you could use the spray painted glass for tin type photography.
Project Idea: I've seen other You Tuber's make a Chess Set out of Resin (Resin pieces and board with a wood boarder and legs)...this would seem to be a useful tool to make the board squares and even etch a design into checker pieces to make a combination chess & checker's set with all the pieces matching the board colours (since they're all made from the same batch of Resin - mix the colours and pour half the squares and half the chess/checker pieces at the same time)...
One person I watched, bought a cheap plastic set from their local Hobby Store and used silicone rubber to make moulds for the pieces to cast the Resin Pieces with...
Neat! Would the rotary kit allow you to make etched rolling pins? Or just engrave on aluminum or steel bottles?
Everyone involved in a legnthy & intricate kumiko project just dropped their tools in disbelief. You can see the clouds of their souls leaving their body behind, floating away to the upper atmosphere...
Definitely use the air assist. It will reduce the surface burn marking.
The plate glass one would be cool to use multiple lauers of glass to have details with depth
You should see what of the various resin coloring agents you've tested work well with the laser :)
a knife with clear or transparent color resin handle with the design etched onto the tang could be cool
Could you perhaps turn a dark wood pen the traditional way and then deeply engrave a pattern into it with the laser then fill that pattern with a gold/silver resin? Perhaps then needing to turn/sand the resin back.
Make the flexible plywood into a shallow bowl. Press it into a mold and set it in resin.
Wondering on the black painted glass, can you shine light thru it? Very cool lazer and great video.
Welcome to the wonderful world of lasers. Caution number one, aside from don't look at the light, is to make sure what you are lasering isn't creating noxious gases.
As for a fun project, you can take a 3D object, like an animal head or a bust, run it through a slicer. Then use cardboard to cutout the slice layers. You then put the layers together and you have recreated the 3D image out of layers of cardboard.
A rolling pin with a pattern to make pie dough?
Those are cool! I could totally make one!
Only one step away from a 3d printer now! ;)
Dip the engraver!
Awesome fun tool. But can it etch a makers mark into resin?
5mm single pass is really good.
