- I continue to explore Finzi's musical orchards!
Finally got this HD version uploaded! Immersed as most of us are in the crazy turmoil of noise and perpetual bad news, take heart!
"Deep roots are not reached by the frost" - JRR Tolkien.
Here are three of Gerald Finzi's Five Bagatelles, composed originally for clarinet and piano duo - arranged here by Lawrence Ashmore.
The three inner bagatelles are represented, in the following order:
II Romance
III Carol 4:18
IV Forlana 6:15
The images here are of England's Peak District in Derbyshire, which I took at Christmas 2008 and 2009.
Great Longstone's 13th century church features in this clip, as does the Jacobean Tissington Hall and the Norman chancel arch of the church of St. Mary at Tissington.
Northern Sinfonia
Conducted by Howard Griffiths
Clarinettist: Robert Plane
A Naxos Recording
Quintessentially English - moves me to tears every time I hear it.
I met George's nephew a couple of months before he died fairly recently.
A hill to climb, a path to follow, these are the quiet joys shown here. Silent leaning headstones, pressed by time and winds, stand in testament to lives once led in a world so different to ours. Thanks for sharing these beautiful places with us.
Thank you. Your are ever poetic evanofelipe.
and nothing more beautiful than the English countryside - thank you so much
Shame we're destroying it to build houses
Wonderful. I once took a two month long vacation in England, and this music by Finzi was in my head the entire time. I own this recording, which is quite a fine one. I will share this with my friends who appreciate England and its frosty weather. Presently I live in Saudi Arabia, and seeing scenes of frost and chill fill me with great longing and nostalgia. Thanks for sharing.
This is the first time I've heard Gerald Finzi's music. A friend shared his information, and I have to say I am moved by the wonderful music
Had not heard this piece, but also love the photographs, they look like a page out of Masterpiece Theater. Thanks so much.
That clarinet just breaks your heart...💔
...the rural English countryside, fog and stone and trees so beautifully melancholy like Finzi’s expressive melody.
Thank you so much for giving us all this!
Love the sign, “muddy boots, kids and dogs welcome.” ❤️
I make huge profits on my investment since I started trading with Mr HChun Chen, her trading strategies are top notch coupled with the little commission she charges on her trade.
Of all of Finzi's music this seems to me to be the finest piece
His exquisite works continue transcending the times .
Ant PDC. - I love 💕 listening to Finzi’s 5 bagatelles. All of them on clarinet and beautifully played too.
I’m almost spaced out I’m so relaxed 😎 listening to these 5 lovely pieces of music. I also enjoyed moving along in the English country side with the video . Nowhere better, in my view.
Hells bells ANT, a pub that welcomes muddy boots, kids and dogs. The Pack Horse sounds brilliant and I wish there were more like it. Love Finzi and the video.
IKR!
here i am at 3am always coming back to one of my favourite composers ,thank you Anthony some days this is all that makes sense for me
Felix Bloxham A lovely comment Felix, thank you. Like you, I've always been a night owl...
Well I just visited a church at Ashmansworth and opposite the little church sits a beautiful cottage which has a blue plaque which says Gerald Finzi lived here. I’ve never heard of him but listening to this I’d say the man was a romantic as it’s peaceful and calm and not at all bad.
I became a devotee of Finzi from a vocalistic point of view when first I heard Intimations Of Immortality, but the orchestral arrangements really got to my soul to such an extent that led me into searching out anything by the man and was blown away. I can add no more to the accolade that has been voice re. Finziism. I hope his music stays around in the councioussphere as long as Beethoven,s. .......Peace!!
Delightful stuff, I’m so happy when my classical station deigns to play it.
What a joy to find this incredible performance. Finzi's bagatelles, with their beautiful, weaving contrapuntal lines, were indeed meant to be orchestrated, and Lawrence Ashmore's arrangement really brings out all the sounds and colors hidden in the score.
Classic FM often play these early in the morning. I find them partcularly beautiful and such a release from the chaos of modern life. These pieces are within the 100 Classical Works that you should own or at least have access within a library. It's a sobering thought that no one will ever compose music like this ever again....
The music and the countryside scenes are all so beautiful. Thank you.
Fan of Finzi since '80s, along with Parry, German, Quilter, and many more unsung ones. Discovered the Olde Gods (Holst, Vaughn Williams] in my teens in the '60s.
Gracias por estos hermosos regalos
This music brings back very happy memories of an extended trip I took to the UK many years ago. I spent a lot of time in Devon and the Lake District, and this music reminds me of those times. The English country side is truly beautiful, and this music expresses that beauty perfectly.
I've always loved these pieces (and many other Finzi compositions) - Thank you so much for creating this beautiful montage of exquisite photos; it was a great pleasure to watch!
Thank you very much for the Finzi and beautiful accompanying images.
As an Englishman, both resonate for me with a force that is hard to describe. Very bitter-sweet though, l'm afraid. This England, the home of my ancestors, will fade away in a couple of generations...
My friend England will never be lost.
FOR SHE'S HA'SHEM'S MAKING
QUEEN AND COUNTRY
SHALOM AMEN
I am suprised that I have lived so long and notg really been aware of this man's beautiful music. Still better late than never
Es la primera vez que escucho a este clarinetista. Su sonido, y su interpretación son para mí: autentico, cálido, inspirador, evocador, profundo, delicado, cautivador... Gracias Finzi, gracias AntPDC y gracias a los interpretes.
This is bliss, pure bliss! The images are stunning as well.
I make huge profits on my investment since I started trading with Mr HChun Chen, her trading strategies are top notch coupled with the little commission she charges on her trade.
His music is one of the few pieces that brings images to my mind’s eye. Such beauty!
And these photographs are exactly what I was seeing when I first heard this music on Classic FM when driving to work
Ah, so lovely--thank you, thank you!! Yearning to see this gorgeous countryside and all its offerings. I heard again Finzi's Bagatelles as I rode down the Nashville freeway this afternoon. They lifted my heart.
I'll make you a cup of tea while you do :)
If you live in a place like Nashville you NEED Gerald Finzi!
Thank you for your comments Jinney - so kind and generous of you. Gerald Finzi's music has made a big impact on my life and I shall ever be grateful for his continuing presence in my mind.
I vaguely knew of the Finzi Trust, and had made a note to look further a little while ago. I must take that more seriously now that I have returned home to England, and I very much look forward to many more conversations with you about this remarkable man, composer, and apple-grower
Ant
Inspired music complimented by beautiful images making an harmonious whole! I cannot understand the nine people who gave this a 'thumbs down'.
Sublime music and beautiful English Countryside, sheer bliss.
Bliss it is, belated thanks Russel :)
@@AntPDC Thanks for this pleasurable video but where is I and V ? I will look at your playlist...
@@Kiarinadia Thank you. Alas I haven't got around to making them (yet). Best wishes.
@@AntPDC Thanks, no pressure when it is towards beauty, patience is the way :-)
It's taken me 65 yrs to discover Finzi.
He passed at a relatively young age (in his 50's). A sad loss to the world of classical music. His melodies are gorgeous (as is this video production).
@AntPDC .Thanks for your response. Arabia is not a bad place to live, and there are indeed many possibilities and opportunities, but for a person with a four seasons soul like me endless sun and heat are a little hard to take at times. Postings such as yours quench my thirst for cool and quiet. When I leave Arabia for good I will treat myself to a trip to the green and beautiful British Isles.
That Tolkien should be a bumper sticker. Thanks again...for the beautiful music and accompanying images.
Thank you. Umm...Tolkien?
.. beautiful..
I absolutely adore Gerald Finzi's music I fell in love with him many years back when I heard the clarinet concerto and then much later his tremendous Eclogue so anything he wrote is so worth anyone's time to listen and enjoy Thankyou so much for posting X
Bliss. Have loved this music ever since I was 8 and picked up a clarinet for the first time.
Oh! Well done sir! You've treated us all to beautiful music and imagery...….thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!
THANK YOU FOR THE POSTING. ANTHONY, YOU STATED THAT FINZI'S FIVE BAGATELLES WAS ARRANGED BY LAWRENCE ASHMORE WHO KNEW FINZI QUITE WELL. ASHMORE GRADUATED FROM THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC IN LONDON, HE WORKED WITH THE LSO, RPO & BBC RADIO. A FINE COMPOSER & ARRANGER. SADLY, LAWRENCE ASHMORE PASSED AWAY LAST MONTH FROM A STROKE. HE SPENT 60 YEARS IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS.
I appreciate that you take the trouble to add panning images rather than just sticking a motionless album cover up for 10 minutes. I mean, these are videos, not mp3's. For me, I find in creating videos like this and choosing images (though mine are seldom so compelling) it forces me to really listen and get a better understanding of the piece than I would have. In this multitasking world, music is too often relegated to a kind of audio wallpaper, even for us fans. Thanks for the upload.
I love English pastoral music. Finzi deserves to be heard more often. Very nice photography as always.
Belated thanks Track :)
AntPDC Thanks Ant. I really enjoy your channel, lovely music and always excellent photography.
Thank you for sharing this. Finzi is one of my favourite composers. The pictures are very nice too!
I make huge profits on my investment since I started trading with Mr HChun Chen, her trading strategies are top notch coupled with commission she charges on her trade.
Always beautiful. The accompanying pictures are stellar and marvellously appropriate.
Another stunning presentation!!! After seeing your work, I want to grab my camera and jump on a plane from Toronto to Derbyshire with my iPhone full of Finzi's music.
Many Thanks
Hmm. I love the illustrations by Eric Ravilious, but I think I actually prefer these pictures. There was a lot of sadness in Gerald's life and these photos capture that sense of melancholy, isolation and perhaps emptiness that his music portrays.
Thank you for this sensitive video of Finzis' precious music
Such lovely music with wonderful pictures,if i feel stressed,i watch this. Thanks a million.
I've sung some of Finzi's choral works - this is beautiful.
I played the "Forlana" on my jury this semester... i love this entire piece, it's gorgeous!!!!!!!
I have just listened to and watched my morning dose of AntPDC. I can count on your postings to transport me to exactly where I want and need to be. The music could always do this, but the addition of your photography, gives me the look of the world that feels right. Thank you for all.
My sincere pleasure Harpers Faerie, as ever.
this is The Beauty... thanks a lot for this wonderful video over the amazing music by Finzi!
Magnifique musique vidéo merci 🌟🎶
Thank you again for sharing Finzi's gorgeous music with us. Another instant favorite for me! I plan to listen to as much as you'll share--and more!
It's a little gem of a piece Doc. Thank you for commenting.
This is one of the most beautiful things I have found on youtube. Thanks for the uplift.
A pleasure.
I come back time and time again to this particular video, the images fit the music perfectly
Thanks for you comment John, warmly appreciated.
Just now discovered this Composer (thanks to your Channel the beauty of utube) - never heard tell of him - been listening to Classical all my life. Never heard air play of him in Canada or U$. Thanks for posting… and introducing me - sounds beautiful - guess I have some catching-up/discovering to do in the New Year! ps. really lovely photos been to England twice - hope to return soon.
Excellent music by a long neglected composer...and a beautiful sound from the clarinet...great video, thanks!
It's like a double-edged sword. It depends on the person who connects with it.
There's good and evil. It's up to us to find the good in it.
Thank you for this wonderful video. The wintery photography seems to complement Finzi's music perfectly. I love the almost pastel nature of the colour.
so goooooood . thanks for uploading :)
There is a wistful, aching sort of beauty in much of Finzi's music, as there is in the lovely phoographs that accompany it here. There is a picture here of someone standing alone in a church that reminds me of one of my favourite poems by R.S. Thomas called "The Belfry".
I must look that poem up Carolyn. Thank you for your comments.
Wonderful Music
I am utterly charmed by your channel. Thanks so, SO much for doing this. It's beautiful. I love the pictures. Thank you.
My pleasure craffte!
Thank you so much for this music! I simply love Finzi's pastoral style.
You are most welcome Kenneth!
Needed even more now, to calm our souls! In addition to the fact that I'm currently playing this (the clarinet/piano version) with a young college clarinetist, and the pieces were played in the Third Annual Sidney Forrest Clarinet Competition (named for my father, clarinetist Sidney Forrest.)
schöne Bilder und Sendung, Danke!
Fabulous!
"The love of field and coppice,
Of green and shaded lanes.
Of ordered woods and gardens.........."
Just discovered Finzi's music a couple days ago and I'm already in love with his works 😍😍😍 20th century music is my personal favorite (along with the early romantic era haha 👍🏻)
@elainebmack It was my pleasure, increased by your most touching comments! It was good of you to take the trouble to let us have your insights. Very best wishes. I hope Arabia is being kind to you. I'd imagine there are huge possibilities.
Ant
@ECinUNow Thank you very much; I warmly appreciate your comments and very happy that you enjoyed this piece and my photos :)
Thanks for the heads up Kirrie! Listening to ++Justin's show now via Classic FM's "listen again".
Thank you Ben, and yes, it's Chrome Hill - a coral reef when Derbyshire's Peak District was roughly near the Equator. Best wishes.
merci pour cette sélection
@poonchop Thank you very much poonchop! As you can see, I am catching up, and your comment is most welcome!
Ant
Love. Lo más bello que he escuchado este último tiempo
beautifully played!
Beautiful!!
You are most welcome, and thank you for your comments, with which I agree wholeheartedly. It's always a problem to convey one's subjective ideas when trying to match images with music isn't it? And I think it was Vaughan Williams who commented "why even try - just take my music for what it is", or words to that effect! Best wishes.
@AntPDC i was lucky my clarinet instructor had it on on hand... it's now one of my favorites to play :)
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Finzi should be played far more. Wonderful pieces!
It is a very appealing piece Richard, thank you. Classic FM played it this afternoon (the Carol), and even though I know it well, as I drove down to Ashbourne, it brought a tear to my eye.
AntPDC Absolutely marvellous... I love Finzi, and these gems are incredibly beautiful... thanks for this video and these wonderful images!
lucamadeus A real pleasure lucamadeus.
beautiful video
Thank you Andy. Alas, I don't play the clarinet - wish i could. Best wishes.
beautiful
Danke :)
MARAVILLOSO
@alan1507 Thank you very much. I'm so sorry I overlooked your PM. Happy to share with you!
Ant
Thank you for your comment. The information you are looking for is in my Description. Kind regards.
I think we all really need to have pity on the one person who actually gave this music a thumbs down.
I'm so glad Robert Fripp turned me on to this composer.
@mrcctq I wouldn't know about that, but he speaks most eloquently here. Thank you for your comment.
@elainebmack I understand. It's a bit of an ordeal for one's soul to live in places which aren't "home" - in one's deeper heart and mind. I really miss Britain for the similar reasons. For me, I long for the tangible feelings England evokes - of ancient peoples, their buildings, and landscapes shaped by them. I'm sure this isn't at all unique. And I suppose it's all about being "homesick"!. Best wishes.
Anthony
My thanks to you for your comments. The house is Tissington Hall (please see my Description). Best wishes to you.
I think you may like Beetham, Cumbria and it's lovely church and pub - quite like St Mary's Tissington
@Caramellatta What a beautiful comment! Warmest thanks.
Loved his choices of music, and his gentle commentary. He mis-identified the piece that was played as the "Romance" from Finzi's Bagatelles - it was in fact the "Carol" (just in case folk get confused).
@LondonClarinetist I do wish I could play that most communicative instrument! Thank you for your comment.
Ant
I adore these pieces and your video matches it perfectly as usual - well done and thank you! The Romanza and Forlana are my favourites. What is the lovely house at 6.05 please?
@taiblademaster I do wish I could play that. I envy you :) Thank you for your comment.
No.4 for Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Rest in peace.
1- Romnce
2- Carol
3-Forlana
4- Fugetta
Thank you. This is a beautiful slide show to accompany some of my favourite clarinet music. Who is the clarinettist?
