In one way I hate to see such a beautiful restoration/conversion used but it is wonderful to see and hear it working. And what fun is it to just leave it sit in the shop and only run it outside on special occasions? I have to admit if I had the time and effort into it that they have I'd work it too. Meticulous maintenance of course.
No its been re-engined with a very large displacement diesel V8. You can see at the top of the engine the exhaust comes from two sides into a single pipe going through the hood. What's the engine out of. Who ever did the conversion did a wonderful job!
That engine is the Caterpillar D-17000 They are the V-8 version of the D-8800 4 cylinder used to power the D-7 and the six cylinder D-13000 used to power the D-8. They were sold as power units and gen sets and was not used to power any of Caterpillars equipment. They were used in the Letourneau Tournapull A motor scraper.
After seeing some better angles of it, I do believe it's a D7, the dash is very similar to a D8, but is narrower. Definately older than a 3T. I agree, that looks to be a very well done conversion. Sure would like to know more about it.
That's not a D7, it's a D8. Look at the dash, 13A or older. John Smith, Chevrolet had a V8 in 1918, many other automobile manufacturers had V8s years before that.
