I have never any intention to make a fake rock, but I watched it to the end non-the-less :-)
Thanks for the positive feedback and I appreciate you watch my video.
I didn't think I would either but I am doing a lot of clearing of noxious brush near my boundary and some of those piles house bumble bee nests that I do not want to destroy. I have been thinking about different "covers" I could make for the nesting areas I leave there and with every idea I come up with, I know people (passers by) will interfere with them, either deliberate destruction or theft. This fake rock idea I think just may be the answer. Bumble bee nests are not big like hives, they are quite little, and rocks just half the size he made in the vid will be sufficient. The only extra care I have to take is the cavity should be unobstructed and big enough to just drop over the existing litter mound the bees home is in, even allow for some nest expansion if they feel truely comfortable in there, and that there is an entry/exit tunnel made from a short piece of hose built into the rock at the base, and sloping downwards so rain can not enter the nest. After so long trying to come up with a safe solution to saving the bees, I'm pretty sure this will work.
Back in the day 1970’s when people wanted a “rock shelf” to hide the pool pump. We would build a frame to hold and access the pool pump. We then used whatever was about to make a base for the rock. Cover it with bird wire then, make a concrete mix adding various sized polystyrene pellets in the concrete. Sculpt the rock shape and powdering the surface with a coloured oxide. Let it cure for 7 days . Come back and pour petrol over the rock. All the exposed polystyrene would dissolve and there you are ….. a rock!
Thanks for the great feedback and sharing your experience. I appreciate you watching my video.
Thanks for your feedback I really thought that was a funny line. I appreciate watch my video.
You could also use rock salt pressed into the outside of the rock after you finish sculpting it. Then you can wash it with water; a LOT safer than using petrol!!
Thanks for the feedback. I do appreciate you taking the time to watch my video.
🥰BRAVO!!!👏👏👏
I was taught how to make textures using silicone forms made off of natural rocks as transfer templets we could press into the wet formed rocks we were contracted to make. When done they looked so realistic that you would never think they were hand made. My teacher was the son of the man that did Disney's Matterhorn in Anaheim CA.
Well, thanks for that feedback I really appreciate you watching my videos and I do a lot of molded rock features unfortunately, cardboard videos perform so much better than my molten rock videos, but check out my channel. I’ve got a lot of mold and Rock not just stamped, but actually casted rock.
Gen contractor of that was Tommy from AH but in that era arround Anaheim hills best craftsman was Eric ray good old days
When man loves what he does, the watcher of it loves it too.
Well, thank you very much for that kind feedback. I really appreciate you taking your time to watch my video.
Truth right there.
Looks great. And be sure to park your vehicle far enough away that you dont damage the paint. I harmed one car doing touch up paint on another nearby. It took me a minute or two to figure out where 100 tiny polka dots came from.
Thanks for the positive feedback and watching my video. Truck wasn’t near the spatter. It must’ve been an optical illusion. Everyone seems to think that it was going to get splattered and didn’t.
You did a great job on those boulders. Very creative, most interesting.
Well, thank you so much. I appreciate that feedback and the time you took watching my video.
And to think I paid 1,500 dollars to have rocks delivered to my yard! 🤦♀️
It’s all good…
Well at least no one can walk off with any of your rocks!
This is so badass especially when you consider the cost of landscape boulders.
Thanks Danny I appreciate your positive feedback. I especially appreciate you taking your time to watch my video.
Yes, last year I paid $450. For a small boulder in my flower garden.
This man just made a better looking rock with cardboard.😂
Great video!
Well thank you Michelle I appreciate you watch my video and giving good feedback.
Damn fine instruction... easy to listen to.
Blown away, Thanks!

Those are amazing. I would not have guess that those were made. Just curious, how much weight will they support. I have a Husky that I'm sure will jump on them.
Thanks I appreciate your feedback and the time you took in watching my video. The rocks will support me and you both jumping up and down on them repeatedly no worries.
Do you know how many rocks/boulders I have thrown away??????? NOOOOOOO! :-) I am going to do this. Oh yeah y'all!
Could you possibly create a Sandstone type finish for a future video.. Love your work just brilliant
Yes, that’s possible… I appreciate your positive feedback, and the time you took him watching my video.
Stunningly beautiful 😍👍💕🪨...Whats in the Hydro sealer mix? (In the 🪣)
Oh thanks for the positive feedback. I appreciate you watching my video. It’s just a simple cement sealer that I’ve come up with.

Seeing this video, i was like "I already have some real rocks in my garden. But uh, maybe i can try to make some Easter Island statues to shock my neighbours!". And right after this video i see you already did that xD
Thanks, i may try that too.
Thanks for the positive feedback. I appreciate you watch my video.
So I live in New Hampshire, and there used to be a natural face on a mountain called "The Old Man on the Mountain." It unfortunately collapsed back in 2003. It would be awesome to recreate a cardboard version or perhaps carve out some foam and make a rock replica. What's your thoughts on a project like this.? Thanks for sharing.
Over the years, I have figured out that there are 12 methods to creating any shape of rock… although cardboard is free, sometimes are limitations with it, but depending on the size, it’s probably what I would lean towards
I had a pile of broken concrete, so instead of dumping it, i stacked it in a bolder shape. Used a similar technique to coat it a few times but I used off white cement with the sand.
Yes another route to the same end. I have a Gentefied 12 different methods for creating rock the one you utilized a call, solid fill or usually I take a little bit of rubble a little bit of mud, a little bit of rubble and layer it and then coded at the end. Thanks for Sharon.
❤ you are an absolute Master great video presentation👍🏻 no wasted time extremely informative, creative and impressive thank you🫡
Well, thank you very much for your kind feedback. I really appreciate you taking your time to watch my video.
I have been wanting to put a large rock in the front yard. The dream lives again! Thanks!
Glad to be of service… Thanks for the positive feedback. I appreciate you watching my video.
The passerbys will see you carrying that large boulder and will be amazed at how strong you are, and wont mess with you! lol
I was nervous watching texture being spattered onto the rock with that beautiful truck in the background!
I’ve had that comment on Robert via devise. The truck was not that close to the splatter.
I like your work and was thinking of the possibility of making a large faux anvil and then in the last few moments I see the anvil patterns behind you. Greetings from Melbourne Australia
Totally clue glad to be of service… I appreciate you providing good feedback, and taking your time to watch my video
( ɷ◡ɷ) I love creative techniques, thanks!
Well, thanks for the positive feedback I really appreciate you watching my video
Great work. Clearly a craftsman. Thank you for sharing
Thank you I appreciate that a lot, not to mention you taking your time to watch my video
A trick I used on a cave I made that gave a really nice natural texture, was when it was about 1/2 to 3/4 cured, I brushed it vigorously with a wet chip brush. That smoothed out the finish like weathering but kept the lumpy.
Oh thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you taking your time to share and the fact that you watch my video.
There are a ton of methods that we can use to texture, and that’s one of them for sure .
@@fauxrock i am excited to watch the rest of your vids. This one already gave me ideas I shall use. Thank you :)
That’s awesome. I’m so glad to be of service. Thanks again.👍🙂
This was a fabulous video. Loved it. Thanks for sharing it.
Cyndy, thank you for that kind feedback I really appreciate you taking your time to watch my video.
Curious what kind of hydro seal you’re using? And what kind of bonding agent?
The Hydro seal that I use personally is one that I developed, which is proprietary to my company, but there are a lot of manufactures of hydro sealers on the market, so it’s not hard to locate. The bonding agent and the admixtures that we put in cement or one in the same thing. It’s an acrylic resin carried in water.
I really liked the shape of the chiseled looking rock but I’m sure the process is similar for both - super interesting!
I’m like you… I like the more fractured and chiseled rocks like you described, and I did both for the sake of that original full length video, where in I made a round and a more angular Rock, but as you said, the techniques are pretty much the same. Thanks for watching.
@@fauxrockDid you smooth out the surface of the chiseled rock with a trowel?
No… the mud was already dried when I chiseled it and there was no more smoothing it out but that’s the characteristic you want is a chisel broken look to emulate a fracturing…
That's exactly how I fill my own cavities.
Now that is funny… Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate you watching my video

Well, thank you for your subscription and I do appreciate you providing great feedback and watching my video.
It's basically a tech stone, Styrofoam and concrete, design and stain to make it appear like a real granite field stone, a 600 lb. Rock that you can put on your shoulder and walk down the street with it.
Yes, indeed… thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you watch my video.
Really awesome video! Inspiring me to get out and do something like this soon!
Totally cool… I appreciate your positive feedback and thanks for watching my video
Bravo, have done something very similar, built a whole pond using cement and chicken wire, rocks were around salvaged pieces of big foam packing material. Can check it out on channel of my own. The homemade rocks are extremely durable and its nice to make them exactly the size and shape you are looking for.
Oh, thanks for the positive feedback especially from a rock veteran yourself… Thanks for watching my video.
Well, I’m always amazed at what a small world it is… I grew up in Tucson and actually started my rock making business there in the 70s. I lived on the east side of Tucson off of Broadway and eighth Street. I went to Saguaro high school. I also checked out your videos that’s where I figured out that you were from Tucson. Nice work.
@fauxrock wow small world, went to Santa Rita, but had many friends from Sahauro. Still out here, yes rocks are plentiful out here but Heavy. Nice to be able to make rocks anyway you like. Might make a stone wall out front what is nice you can mix up a bag and do a little at a time ..before you know it you have something to be proud of.
@sweetsketch3 Santa Rita??? we used to have a Lotta beefs with you southern boys. lol👌
@@fauxrock I remember going over to your school, and some of our guys were dating your softball team. It didn't always go over well.
Hi, thanks for this tutorial. I want to know if faux boulders like this would be strong enough for sitting on?
You’re very welcome and I appreciate you taking your time to watch my videos.
Yes, the boulders can take a lot of weight where you could stand, jump up and down or whatever you wanna do on them
What a great idea! I live in the first house on a cul-de-sac, and the edge of our driveway is constantly driven over by big trucks which caused that corner to cave in. We recently have had the driveway repaved and have been looking at large rocks to put next to the corner to keep vehicles from driving over the edge. Rocks can cost a few hundred dollars, so your idea will be perfect for what we need. Thanks for sharing.
Glad to be of service… thanks for the positive feedback I do appreciate you watch my video
Pretty nifty. I wonder how much one of those faux rocks weighs?
Thank for watching my video and providing positive feedback. The rock in this video series weighed around 60 lbs.
after the second seal coat will it hold paint ? i used to make rocks occaisionaly for sets for plays, that I built scenery for. they werent weather proof, being on a stage, but alot had stairs or ramps built into them, and were fun to texture and paint but it was all styrofoam, chicken wire, latex, with thickeners, and fabric, didnt work with all of the cement products ...
Yes, after the second seal coat, it will hold paint, but we also seal it again, with a clear acrylic sealer the locks in the paint and stops the rock from becoming stand any further from foreign elements. Thanks for watching.
Great creative mind. Nice work.
I appreciate your positive feedback and thanks for watching my video.
Reminds me of the fake rocks at theme parks
Thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate watching my video.
I cringed when I saw spattering the rock with the brush and seeing thr car parked in the background Ooops.
Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate you watching my video… Truck is fine…
Thank you for the great tutorial. I just have a couple of questions. How much would a rock like this weigh on average? And also, how much weight can it handle, if someone were to sit or stand on it?
Thanks for the positive feedback… I appreciate you watching my video.
This rock weighs around 40-60 lbs. very strong able to have me jumping up and down on it.
Wow...and wow! You just showed me that I need another project...making boulders for my landscape. I am so excited to try your method. Thank you for making this video!!!
I’m glad to be of service to you… Thank you very much for your positive feedback. I really do so appreciate you watching my videos.
That’s genius idea but Watch out your truck you might get the splatters on it
Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you watching my video
Might be a stupid question; but does the cardboard ever get removed after the concrete sets/cures?
If you can take it out, you want to you can there’s no need other than I don’t want somebody that’s purchasing a rock for me to see the cardboard. It looks kind of tacky.
Thank you for showing the cardboard technique! My daughter and I make garden decor; birdbaths etc.- often with hypertufa. I just checked your classes- above in your description you mention a 15 day class (download version) listed for $495 but I can't find it on the site. Am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks!
Well, thanks so much for the kind feedback. I really appreciate that. And thanks for watching my video.
On my website there’s a bronze package that’s the 15 days synthetic rock DVD training course and it’s no longer on sale for 495. It’s currently a $700 price but that does include a new format where I give one on one training to you to expedite your understandings and executing your first and second project .

How much weight can one of these faux rocks support? Reason I'm asking....I'd like to make a faux rock base for a coffee table that will have a thick and pretty heavy wood slab top. The wood slab top could be up to 50 lbs, possibly. Will one of your other rock methods be better suited for supporting weight? Thanks for these video, they're super informative!

I love what you did
Thanks Ray I appreciate your positive feedback and the fact that you took the time to watch my video .
whats the price comparison between all those materials, compared to a real rock that same size?
The price of faux rock over real rock is usually less expensive when you figure out all of the logistics of using real rock compared to faux rock. Knowing Rock the size that I made in this video, there’s not too much heavy logistics and using real rock what is the rocks get bigger that’s where you start saving money.

Pool deck brush. We call it a "Dash Brush" dash and knock down was a popular texture in the Stucco industry back in the 70s
Yes… I was there as well. Now we are dating ourselves lol
Yep. I grew up in FL. Learned most of my theme plaster skills working at Disney
Thanks for the feedback… I appreciate you watching my video.
I’ve trained two different crews that worked for Disney. I also manufactured 50 different customized boulders that covered equipment items at Epcot center in Florida. Rock on…
I am not sure why, but I have a concern about the bottom being open like that. Could the rock interior become a haven for rodents, insects, or reptiles?
We make tons of these type rock and haven’t had a problem with unwanted guest. We always bury the rock about two inches below grade.
@@fauxrock Thank you for the response!
Thanks back at you…😀
This is awesome! I'm thinking about using this technique as a hide / shed for some desert property. Any tips on using something like this for storage?
Oh, thanks for your feedback and I appreciate you taking your time to watch my video.
Over the years, I’ve made a lot of equipment rock, which are well big enough to stand in and move around comfortably . I prefer to have cement floors/foundation to build on… but my technique would be no more different other than I would always make sure to use the mesh which I’ve used in previous videos

I have a question. With all of the material and time that you’ve put in, wouldn’t buying real rocks/ boulders less money?
Also, is the weight close to real rock or half of the weight?

love your work man, - hey, just a quick thought, to get different hues and colors, you can mix in random cement coloring agent so they look more unique.
This technique is great, its how the ancient Mayans got all their stone pyramids to perfectly fit together .... true story
Well thanks Mike for the positive feedback and information you shared. I’m one that always stains after the cementitious form is created. I utilize penetrating stains, and it cost very little to stain this way and it lasts and it doesn’t peel. Obviously we see all over the top of that to lock it in to give it UV protection. Calculate the cost of a rock being at $35 per square foot of surface area and to be honest with you I haven’t calculated the rock I made for the video. And to be quite honest, I haven’t made a single rock for somebody in a long time. I basically do projects, so the cost of what that should go for really isn’t in my thinking currently.
Interesting - near all the way through, i was thinking great 'shadow box' for faux GEODE
(if that makes any sense)
Well, thank you very much for the positive feedback. I really appreciate you watching my video.
This seems like a lot of work, but I suppose compared to buying a stone of this size for $400 it's worth it. Or you can just see it as a nice art project.
Thank you very much for your positive feedback… I so do appreciate you watching my video.
