A lot of people didn’t care so much about the matches. What happened backstage, the comical stuff and all the drama in between is what made the show interesting.
but... but this person deserves this and this person deserves that :00000
@@ryanjenki7948 What lol 😅
@@alexisflores7066idk that Ryan guy is a bit of a t*rd
I don’t think you speak for a lot of people. No offense.
Exactly. That's why I loved WWE. I mean also loved the wrestling but somehow you were more hyped for the promos and that stuff.
it was everything else besides the matches that made the attitude era great. there’s a reason why backstage clips and whole filmed segments are still fondly remembered not just the in ring stuff.
People watch clips of old Rock or Austin promos and act like the attitude era was 100% that. You had characters like “beaver cleavage” about a mom banging her kid
That's the whole point of a WRESTLING SHOW
@@thenationofdefecation7969 it just has to be said bc some fans ( cough cough) don’t get what makes a good wrestling show, and just have matches that are thrown together to get the approval of some guy that writes reviews.
Bro there was some amazing memorable matches cmon😂
@@thenationofdefecation7969no
Russo even said “we gave them more wrestling on the PPV since they paid for it”
Exactly. He wrote in like a TV show. Why have a 15 minute match with commercials interrupting anyway when you can fit two matches and a promo in that time? Save the 15 minute matches for the commercial free PPV.
@@jjalkman1999Austin left the company for the same reason. They wanted ppv shit on free tv. WWE is only hot for one reason right now, everyone wants to see this dragged out Roman reigns run come to an end with what was a two year build up with Cody. Thank fuck the rock thing changed.
@@jjalkman1999Okay yes, however like edge said 3 minute matches or less just can't be done in an adequate way.
And the attitude era PPV’s always sucked, because the fans were trained to not accept matches more that 2 minutes long, so all the fans were silent
@@dantegood2195lol no they weren't
What people don't understand was the pay off was in the PPV'S and also the main events were solid
Pretty sure edge understands that bro 😂
Only thing people REALLY remember are the top 5 guys.. what about the other 25-40 other people.. they have families yo feed as well.
@lyrikalkilla433 The rest of the guys went on to be main eventers and feed there family's really well.
@@lyrikalkilla433let's say the top 5 guys are Rock, Austin, HHH, Taker, Kane.
Edge was one of those midcard guys in the tag scene with Christian the Dudleys & Hardies. Dudleys definitely bring food to the table
Then there's guys like Foley, Val Venis, Godfather, Big Show...
@@lyrikalkilla433 everyone was over during the attitude era even the jobbers.
Even with those shorter matches, everyone felt like they mattered in some way. The mid-card guys were over, the main eventers were over, everyone had a place and a storyline, and it just felt incredible.
That's why people PAID for the ppvs and live events Where they would have long matches. Now wwe has these long drawn out matches showing a replay 3 or 4 times just to try and kill time.
You mean now aways 75% of the show is promos
@@csl9495yeah it’s clear someone stopped watching the product awhile ago lol. Nowadays you get like 30 min promos and only like 3 matches on the card lol
Thats why wwes on fire rn and ur crying w edge

WWE has long matches?
Edge’s hair… Can we take a moment to appreciate his hair during the Attitude Era? It truly was glorious.
Maybe he’s born with it.
Maybe it’s Mayballine.
And now matches are so long and drawn out with false finishes that you feel like it's going to take a gun to end the match. The story is everyone kicks out of everything all the time...
Great story
Exactly.
Lol they complain about hogan not selling. But all these wrestler kick out of 3 finishers a match lol

The attitude era was awesome to me because everyone from Crash Holly Dlo and Mideon were given a story and made to feel important.
Like Game of thrones every Character mattered.
Like Game of Thrones? My brother in Christ, one of the main themes of GoT is that almost noone really matters. At all.
Exactly. No moment was wasted
What made the attitude era so great was that we were all so invested in the characters and stories, we didn’t need drawn out matches everyday. These short matches were just used to push the stories all the way to the main event or PPV payoffs
Tbh, shorter matches are more realistic. Real fights only last a few minutes. Plus modern attention spans are shorter anyways. I prefer shorter matches & more backstage segments.
These aren't street fights
These are simulating getting your opponents shoulder on the ground for 3 secs
@@OliveMulewhich doesn't take that long. Which is why boxing and mma have it broken up into rounds

"Pro wrestling" and "realistic" don't go together.
What did you think of WWE Speed?
I prefer the shorter matches to what we have now, a 3 hour ppv with 2 matches and a bunch of talking.
I've been rewatching attitude and he exaggerates, most matches are closer to 10 minutes and that's plenty of time to do your thing and not bore people
Going to be honest, these day I watch the entrances and then skip to the last 3 mins of the match. Every time… so yeah..I’d be fine if we went back to the attitude era
This is why the WWE’s UA-cam channel are one of only a handful with the most subscribers & view counts in the world. Fuck sitting through a 3 hour Raw these days when you can literally watch the individual highlights that are uploaded immediately after they’ve just been on TV or you can just go on there later on when even more videos of the show get uploaded.
I wouldn't mind some of these matches today being a minute long
why is he acting like this isnt a consistent problem throughout the years 😂 not just then
I miss short matches . Every match now days is 15 to 29 min.. save that for main event 😊
15 mins is a long match to u?
@thenationofdefecation7969 for EVERY match. Yes . Why would rhea wrestle everyone for 15. Squash 80 percent in 3 minutes or under . Be dominant. And then when the right person challenged her to 15 20 minute. It puts them over even in a loss. Kinda like lasting long in rumble but not winning lol my bad 30 second rant over lol
@@tomthesportsnerd1892 - WWE is a tv company and get billions for their programming. Who the hell is trying to watch uncompetitive squash matches that have no value? It’s not 1985 anymore
The walkouts alone were better than most matches today.
I think you just dislike wrestling
@@thenationofdefecation7969 Nah the wrestling is the only part I care about that's why I like AJPW and NJPW, FMW, and Noah I just hate a lot of modern wrestling because it's a high spot choreography fest instead of a sanctioned "boxing" match. When it takes you 5 seconds to setup a move where it's obvious you're collaborating with your opponent you've lost me.
I remember VERY little in ring work. I obviously have my own highlight reel. But. It will ALWAYS be the entertainment side of it. Not just the wrestling.
He's right, I recently tried to rewatch the Attitude Era as an adult and it's absolutely brutal. Loved it as a kid though!
Lets be honest we loved the "tna" and comical.moments but those "full matches" def use to be 10 min at the most anything longer than that was a beat the clock challenge or literally the main event
now its on the other end of the spectrum where every match is a 25 min banger. when every match goes that long, it just feels even more contrived
We're approaching a high level balance between match length and promo length.
Let's not forget, that minute and eight seconds was also during the days of a two hour Raw. They didn't have all the time in the world. Nowadays, they gotta work to fill those three hours.
The thing I liked about the quicker matches was when a finisher was hit they stayed down. Now a finisher has the same effect as any other move. Which just leaves me thinking the move sucks not that the guy kicking out is tough.
The matches where not ment to be the story. You did great stories, that's why we really did not mind short matches on RAW and smackdown. The matches that where stories where on the PPV's
The long matches were saved for the main events or title matches. That's why there was so many mid carders, they needed people fill the time between
Attitude era was always exciting but we got awesome novellas on TV and beautiful stories on ppv
I was one of the few back then who cared more for matches, so i was a bigger WCW fan because of that
I don’t know, but I haven’t been this excited for wrestling in a LONG time since Rocky came back. I just wish Edge and Christian was still there. Christian has been stellar as a heel in AEW, and I’d love to see the Rated-R Superstar back in full force. They’d be an absolute threat if they came back and joined up again, with how more Rocky’s been saying whatever he wants despite censors.
They're both Wrestling on t.v. if you enjoyed their work you wouldn't care what channel they're on
@@thenationofdefecation7969 Lol, like AEW could ever touch the spectacle that is WWE. Get back to me when you wanna be serious.
Long matches just exposing those who arent great. No one enjoys every match having to go 10-20 mins cuz a jobber kicked out of 3 finishers
@thatwickedhotkid I agree I’d rather have a short match and then the longer match’s be with people that can go
Right 5 to 8 minutes is all ya need
I watch old wrestling shows on Roku and Peacock. I'm surprised how fast they fly by. 30 minutes to an hour at best. Matches aren't long at all.
The shorter matches on raw is war and then smackdown was probably to save the wrestlers from possible injuries going into PPV’s so it was smart from the writers team to do that. It all depends on what part of the show it was, it was allot of mix and matches, some matches were short, some were longer
Shows u how stacked the era was
Attitude era was better, just because edge wanted to wrestle more doesnt mean it wasnt the best. Im glad i grew up watching the attitude era.
Tht usually happens if ur not wrestling in the main or co-main event. By time edge stated headlining the attitude era was over
The reason the matches were short was because there were so many characters the fans loved idk just my perspective I haven't really watched wrestling since attitude era
I agree and I've been saying it for years. The wrestling got hot shot to the point of often not being coherent. The championships got diminished. Too much of a good thing isn't a good thing. Every week we got ladder matches, hardcore, the segments were more for shock value than story telling. The main eventers were always top notch in WWE. but the 96-97 storylines of WWF were better followed by better wrestling at the main event level.
What we are looking for is the perfect combination/mixture of the storylines, drama, and comedy of the attitude era with the ring work we have today that's what we want.
You don't get the ring work of today because every minute someone has to yell a catch phrase or throw a pie in someone's face. That's why cable t.v Wrestling sucks, they're desperately trying to get your attention like a tick tock video. I don't love modern wwe and aew has some problems but at least they let their wrestlers preform and take their time to craft a story
What you’re looking for is to be the same age you were during the attitude era with the same way of life and consumption of media and entertainment. WWE can’t make u 25 years younger
That's what it was , I was wondered why wwf matches during the attitude era felt different it was the quick pacing , edge is right but the matches were more entertaining because of the pace
Hopefully this new era will be a bit of both. The attitude era, but with good storylines and decent matches.
His biggest match in my opinion is the TLC triple threat tag match which was attitude era. Everything is all cutesy now. Was definitely better back then. Even Ruthless Aggression era was better lol
I would say Attitude era had better peaks, but overall balanced and consistency goes to Rutheless Aggression by miles.
I hate to correct Edge here, especially since he lived it and it was his job but this is not how I seen it at all. In fact it was quiet the opposite. Short Matches led to a product where you knew everyone on the roster and would cheer for them because you know you would see them every week and would become invested in their character. From the top of the food chain right down to the jobbers. Everyone had a chance and it was a time when even those jobbers would get big pops from the crowd. A lot can be said in a 2min match and was said week after week. Whether it was Kai and Tai segments, Eddie Guerrero's antics or it was Stone Cold coming out and Stunner'ing someone. There were many moments from the Attitude Era that made compelling storylines and some if not many of those segments were only a few minutes long but told a story we all remember to this day. Like someone else pointed out here, at leat back then you got a variety of matches and wrestlers in the 2hr program. Not like today where things drag on for so long it's boring and where finishers don't mean as much as the titles. Which is absolutely nothing and if I have to sit through another super kick I'll lose it. Even the titles meant something during the Attitude Era. I still remember the Hardcore Title belt when it went 24/7 and all the chaos that ensued was classic stuff...and guess what? It told a great story you wanted to tune in to watch.
Having some short matches sprinkled in is good, and ultimately important if the idea is to build towards the same two guys wrestling at a PPV. Yeah, Edge and Lance could have put on a 20min classic on some random RAW, but the point of that match wasn't to put over Edge or Lance, the match was just a vessel to facilitate the growing of the feud between Christian and Edge. And having a great, 20 min match end on a run-in by Christian would have been a disservice to the match and fans. You don't want fans clamoring for more Edge v Lance, when you're trying to sell PPV buys for Edge v Christian.
People only cared about the "*Moments*", and why they cared about Attitude Era so much was the insane amount and immense size of Monents there were during that time
I’d rather weekly programming be 5-10 minute matches, and a 20-30 minute main event. With emphasis on promo’s/story building.
PG era was not particularly great for the promo/story building.
I don’t need it to be as calloused/wild as the attitude era (having people strip, storylines of infidelity (which actually lead to real life infidelity) kissing the bosses ass literally, etc…), but I need to at least try to believe the wrestlers don’t like eachother. And sometimes swear words, con-chair-to’s, a beat down in a supermarket, and edgy dialogue are necessary for that.
You kinda lost me there chief. One of THE biggest things missing now is the PUPPIES!!!
THOSE were entertaining!!
🤣🤣🤣
The matches were backdrops to the theater of the stories and characters.
The height of popularity that was the recipe.
The stories weren’t told during the match. It was the awesome mic work between the matches that we want back
Good thing about 3 min matches is they didint have time for an ad break mid match.
now we get 3 minute chop exchanges
Edge and Kurt Angle's sign promo was funny. I'm glad they brought that back later on.
Ironically, this was why i preferred WCW was the fact the matches in WCW were fairly long.
Yeah the Attitude Era was awesome and everything but I have more fond memories of the Ruthless Agression Era. It had the violence & the tv14 content of the Attitude Era but with 4 star/5 star classics from the smackdown 6 and others!
As much as the attitude era was an awesome time. Yeah the matches I’m Raw and Smackdown were short most of the times (1-5 minute matches). It ended in a DQ, count out, no contest, or a job. Not saying every match needs to be 30 minutes each no of course not. But it did get annoying at times. But they made it up with good characters and story telling.
He’s being nice. The talent on those rosters was once in a lifetime stuff
Thats why the Ruthless Aggression was perfect
Dear god no
Hell yea the best wresting and group of wrestler the wwe has ever had as far as pure ring talent, it was crazy
COOK
No
@geoffreystacey9006 oh God yeah
That’s why the ruthless aggression era to me was slightly better, AMAZING matches with still a good story.
The matches are too long for most people now. Used to matches were fast and to the point but still felt impactful. Now every match is main event length, it kinda gets exhausting. Let finishers become meaningful, get rid of the constant replays, and give us more backstage content instead of regular promos.
Current WWE programming isn't bad, I just see why the Attitude Era is looked highly upon.
The downside I do remember is that every match ended with some kind of interference and chairs. I can appreciate that wrestling has moved to more about techniques and good sequences for the most part.
That Booker T and Stone Cold in the supermarket segment lives rent-free in my head well that and the Hospital segment with Vince and Stone Cold.
Those 3 min matches had more action packed into them then a 20 min match does now. Its so slow now.
Bring back the Attitude Era. Nowadays you get bored just listening to them talk and talk and talk.... 😢
My perception of the attitude era was that everyone was a superstar. Everyone was so entertaining that the guys that were on the bottom of the totem pole didn't feel like jobbers. Crash Holly was a trip. He was so paranoid trying to protect the hardcore title. People tried to pin him in his sleep. A fan pinned Crash Holly, and the referee counted that ish.😂 Fun times.
Alot of people...myself included don't like those long boring drawn-out matches 😒 1 minute and 8 seconds is a bit crazy id have to agree on that but I mean yeah once in a while at a PPV or something have a 20 or 30 minute match with the right people but for the most part 5-10 minutes was perfect 👌
Exactly. As with most things in life, the best lies somewhere in the middle. Back in the day, the old TV title matches were either 10 or 15 minutes, and guys like Arn, Tully, Steamboat and Regal had zero problems putting on an entertaining match even if it was a time limit draw.
The only people that had 1 minute and 8 second matches in the attitude era were wrestlers who didn't bring anything to the table then.
You think EDGE didn't bring anything to the table???
@@shunakiyama6275 from 1990 to 1998 definitely not... Not with the roster they had... And the bosses new that and that's why he had 1 minute matches.. you don't have 1 minute matches because your good.. he became a top star after the people from the 90s that were better then him retired.
@@jonathan3240 this is simply untrue, let's take a random attitude era episode, say the episode with stephanie mcmahon and test's wedding, there are six matches in this episode, three of them are a minute long, the longest one is 8 minutes, this isn't an edge problem, the attitude era simply had short matches.

Attitude Era was hot shot booking at its best
The problem with wwe/wwf is that they were cramming too many matches in a too short of a time slot
I feel like it’s the style of matches & the way they were presented is what the people want back but hey I can only speak for myself
The only matches that should go over 15-20 minutes are wars for the title or grudge matches between 2 workers that can get it done between the ropes like GUNTHER or Dragunov.
Everyone else is better in a sprint. 8-12 minutes is a sweet spot. Work on your character, promo, & backstage spots. That's when wrestling is at its best.
In my opinion the Attitude Era had best storylines, the New Generation had best gimmicks, Hulk-mania had best promos, and Ruthless Aggression had best matches
Edge was also a mid carder at best during the Attitude Era. Rock and Austin, Taker and Foley, HHH and Angle were not having 1 min matches

Well they balance it out now by having their intro sequence take 4 and a half minutes each.
Tbh stories are made outside of matches but finished in matches
I mean to be fair the main eventers during that era got to go longer, he just wasn’t there up the card yet
Some people weren't wrestling fans...they were fans of the entertainment aspect.
Short matches are like short stories, if you can't tell a story in a limited amount of time, then you can't write a novel.
some times, the best stories are the shortest ones. You don't need 2000 pages to tell the best stories in life.

Lotta people here trying to justify the shortcomings of the attitude era because they’ll do anything to defend taker strapping stephanie to a cross marrying her against her will and beaver cleavage. I don’t know why a lot of people exclusively watch wrestling for segments and storylines, I want to watch a good ass wrestling match
Sometimes you can tell a story no asked for, such as Roman's title reign
The attitude Era had better characters then now they weren't marketed to children like now
Ah yes the true great in depth characters such as "I have a penis" and "haha it's funny I'm Japanese"
Honestly, doesn't the impact of a 1 minute match destroying a wrestler really show the greatness of a 1 hour grind in the Royal Rumble and stuff? Or like how a PPV match may pull out more stops and go for 10 minutes because of what is at stake.
They could honestly do for more promos and story other than constantly kicking out of finishers. Now they're all just signature moves at this point.
Nice to see the workers admit they really weren't setting any new standards back then.
I will zone out halfway through 20-minute matches every time. To be fair, I do have ADHD. But I sat through the movie “Talk to Me” the other night and I was riveted the entire time. Maybe 20-minute matches just aren’t captivating to me.
Im a die hard wrestling fan since I was a child but I think a lot of performers get way to caught up in the matches… literally everything before the bell and after the bell is what keeps me coming back.
People are talking about 2 ends of an extreme personally i like my wrestling to vary as the night goes on. You have one 8 minute match thats just a soild match to get the night started. Later on maybe you have a surprise squash that totally stuns everyone and then in the main event they go 20 minutes and its intense and back and forth. Wrestling is supposed to have variety guys
Been saying this for years
that’s actually not a bad thing for most people, especially casuals, no casual wants to watch a match for more than 5 minutes
Old people love their nostalgia
Aw mane I just had flash back when edge was in that vampire group lmao 😂 and the game was on 64 it was a black cube classic I remember looking at them like who is these guys damn man I miss the ole days mane
The matches ain’t what sells tickets playa
So in theory… if matches were only that long on TV and more people were watching than ever before and since… wouldn’t that be the best way to present the product?? I mean, aren’t the pay-per-views/PLEs where the long matches should be?
The attitude era didnt need high workrate regularly cuz all the characters were good
I've always preferred promos over actual wrestling.
“YOUR” Matches were only 3 minutes lol
The irony is the WWE announcinig a new Title with matches under 3 minutes
They did so much damage to their bodies during the attitude era. When I was a kid I thought that shit was normal.
Raw, smackdown, both have wayyy to much wrestling. Wwe needs to be a show
Promos. Brawls. Comedy. Drama. And the matches should be mainly a showcase for new blood or a contender match. House shows and ppvs is where we get the important match
Better than the 3 hours of weekly promos we get now.
Not sure that it really is. The best ratings come from story building. The crescendos just are more common for ppvs now than they were then
