- Blossom End Rot is due the tomato plant not being able to access calcium and nutrients. It is more about consistent watering than actual calcium in the soil. You should address both. Eggshells need to be dissolved to create water soluble calcium. Here is the treatment for tomato BER.

A woman here on YT said she buys powdered milk, adds a little to your planting soil then waters the plant. When I told my neighbor about it she never had any more BER. It's been several years now but she was sure grateful that I told her that.
When I plant my seedling tomatoes I will add a handful of powdered milk to the hole.
It works. As long as you get available calcium there it doesnt matter how.

This is the best explanation video I've ever seen on this topic. Very graphic. People hear "egg shells work" or "they don't work". But when you explain exactly how and why egg shells don't work they way most people are using them - just breaking them up and dropping them on the soil or in a planting hole. Love the science, love the facts. Clever work with the Sharpie. Hope everyone appreciates the efforts you make so that we understand the process! Have a great Sunday!

I love how you had to use a sharpie to show blossom end rot. Don’t have a problem with blossom end rot, but I had something like a fungus, turned the leaves and stems brown, still alive, but with a brown layer on the leaves and stems. Killed some, some have healthy tips, and some aren’t very affected. I’ve sprayed some 3 in 1 on them and some look better but with the rain I’ll have to spray again.
Yeah lol. Most of my tomatoes are still green but the idea is the same.

@@dailyamusing235 no. I should have sprayed when it first saw it but it’s been very hot. I got lazy and was basically watering and harvesting and nothing else for about a month. It just took over. I’ll know better next time.
a thing i have learned about blossom rot is, what happens above the soil is a result of what's happening beneath the soil. i added a fungus inhibitor to the dirt and the blossom rot went away. treating the roots with anti fungals will get rid of the rot.
Plants literally cannot take up any nutrients without mycorrhizal fungi.

Here’s the (metric) recipe I’ve been using for years, to great effect, here in Tasmania:
* rinse egg shells, then heat in a 95ºC oven for 30 mins to sterilise
* grind to a very fine dust
* combine 1 tbs eggshell dust & 1 tbs vinegar and mix well
* sit for ~30 mins for reaction to complete (creates free Ca)
* 1-2 tsp of free Ca per 1 litre of water
* apply 'calcium solution: container volume' in a 1:5 ratio
* shake well before use

Very interesting video as usual. Thank you for always taking the trouble to be clear, whilst also being concise. On a point of chemistry, the reaction between vinegar (acetic acid) and egg shell (calcium carbonate) releases calcium acetate. The calcium acetate is much more soluble than the calcium carbonate, promoting fast absorption by plant roots. Best wishes.

The calcium carbonate present in the eggshells should neutralize the acidity in the vinegar.

I consider myself a total novice container gardener, so I had no idea that blossom end rot was even a thing. Huh, I guess I’m really lucky that I’ve bumbled along and haven’t had anything worse than planthoppers and the very rare tomato hornworm. I solved the latter problem by encouraging the birds to visit my deck with a birdbath and treats. They took care of every worm before they could eat much of anything. But I’ll be saving up my eggshells from now on. Thanks so much for the information; it is incredibly helpful.

I had BER early in my first season, which disappeared after a single application of natural gypsum (CaSo4 plus many micronutrient salts, which are water soluble). Now I just add gypsum dusting to the soil every Fall. Be sure to use the natural gypsum to get all the micronutrients included. A 5 pound bag of gypsum goes a long way, and so much easier than trying to capture Ca from eggs or bone dust. Ca can't be absorbed through the leaves, so you have to apply any Ca source through the soil.

I will keep that drying shed in my garden goals folder! I hope to someday that I’m producing so much that I need a structure like that! I planted up my romas last week.. prepped the soil with granulated tomato fertilizer, worm castings and bone meal. I recently watched a video about using the water from boiled eggs being used to water tomatoes for calcium.. I imagine there’s no harm, but do you know if there’s a calcium benefit? I cried my way thru 2 semesters of chemistry.. 😂
No harm but boiling water doesnt really break down calcium carbonate. The vinegar does.

A friend of mine used her blender to crush the eggshells and it RUINED her blender. Lucky for me, I've been putting hand-crushed eggshells in my garden for years, so I am reaping the benefit of that ealier effort.

I plant in containers, last year I had BER terrible- used your lime slurry. Can I do the egg shell vinegar mixture to prevent BER? I’m extremely careful about watering. I did add lime before planting. Just wondering if you should only use that if you get BER or if I can do it now as a preventative. Thanks, Gary!! My neighbor said Romas typically have blossom end rot with the first tomatoes. Is that true? I am growing them first time along with my usual San Marzanos. I wasn't sure if it's just her watering habits, or should I really expect it upfront?
I pulverize my eggshells into powder and throw some in the beds during prep. Even if they are not readily able to provide calcium, worms love them as grit, from what I have read.
They both get it very easily.

I have always used Calcium Nitrate if I can get it. I make up a slurry with water. The big thing is to make sure the soil is moist enough for the roots to take up nutrients from the soil including calcium. I still get a bit of BER on oldest ripening fruits. Not that big a deal as I have loads of fruits anyway.
Earthworms can eat and digest egg shells too.

This is my 3rd year attempting to grow San Marzano tomatoes. The first 2 attempts were all disappointing with tons of blossom end rot. I am very diligent about watering as I mostly use containers in my small urban space, but still haven’t gotten it right. This year I threw some gypsum in one area and bone meal in another just to see what happens with the extra calcium. I don’t have tomatoes yet, so we’ll see if it makes a difference. All of my other tomato varieties have grown without issue.
If it does start, you can buy a spray (I think it’s call “rot stop”) and spray your whole plant- leaves and all. It saved my tomatoes last year, they were all getting it and once I sprayed the ones that had it didn’t get worse and the newer ones were perfect 👍

The are prone to it. I sell calcium nitrate at my shop and you can make a water soluble spray with it. That can help but honestly,, try a different variety after 3 tries.

Is there a difference between getting blossom end rot when the tomatoes are green vs. red? I got a lot of them on green tomatoes this year.
You can buy a spray (rot stop or something like that) and spray the whole plant, leaves and all and it will stop green tomatoes from developing blossom end rot once it starts. It won’t help the ones that already have it but the ones developing will be fine. It saved my tomatoes last year. I definitely will try his egg shell recipe to prevent it this year.

You should wear a respirator when grinding eggshells. The fine dust can get into your lungs and will never come out, much like silicosis.

Hi,do you have to sterilize the eggshells,before putting it in the coffee grinder
As a Hail Mary fix you can buy spray (I got mine from co-op) that will treat BER if it develops. Last year it hit my tomatoes and I sprayed them, leaves and all, and it stopped any more of my fruit from being ruined.
I sell calcium nitrate at my seed shop. It make BER mix spray. It works as it get calcium to the plant via the leaves.

I noticed that my tomatoes in the 5 gallon pails aren’t thriving but those in the beds are doing great. Both get the same care. Do 5 gal pails need more water and fertilizer or should I go to a 10 gal fabric pot?
They need much more water soluble fertilizer. I would go to 10 - 20 gallon pots. I do sell that size in fabric pots btw.

How long will the egg powder last? And, do you clean out the egg smell first before putting it into powder form?
I just let my shell dry many days and grind. I dont wash them.

Hi Gary, love your videos and have learned a lot but now I'm faced with an issue. I have 4 tomato plants. They are in a 3'x8' raised bed and I built a chicken wire cage on top that is 7 ft. tall. Last year at summers end I was up on a ladder harvesting the fruit because the vines were about 5 ft. above the top. Is there a way to keep the vines shorter and within the cage? I'm seventy five and the wife worries about me with a ladder.
You can cut them anytime you want. New sucker all form on the sides and you can let the grow up. Check out my alternative pruning videos from a few weeks back. Just like the suckers are cut in that, top of the main vines. You can also bend them downward.

I'd recommend growing a determinate variety of tomatoes, rather than an indeterminate variety. They tend to be much shorter, which I prefer.
@@KaileyB616 Thank you for the suggestion. It sounds reasonable for my situation. I have no experience with determinate varieties, isn't the fruit yield less and if so, how much less?
All it does here in northern NJ is rain everyday😢. My tomatoes are super green, huge and sprawling but hardly any tomato action. It’s just sooo wet, hot & humid. 😢

I red that egg shells have been dug up that was in the ground over 100 years and are still intact.

What about bone meal?
It also mostly calcium carbonate. Over time it will work but not immediately unless you use vinegar. Well in theory but I never tried it that way.

Do eggshells need to be baked in the oven first? I don't get blossom end rot, but we raise chickens and I often wonder what to do with the healthy egg shells. Any other ideas?
@@dorothyhughes1061 I always baked mine I heard it on another channel. Gary says grind to powder then mix with vinegar and they're good to act immediately.
My issue is my pink brandy wine tomato’s with cracks.
