    You may think I'm crazy, but I've been growing garden tomatoes for 40+ years and whenever I've found blossom end rot, I've stoppped it in its tracks by rubbing the end of set tomatoes to remove the stigma. Then I go through the plant and check for blossoms that are shriveled (indicating the plant us setting fruit from that flower) and I gentle remove it and gently rub end of that tomato to make sure the stigma is gone.
    I learned this from my grandmother.
    After doing this, I add a source of calcium but continue to check psets for a stigma that didn't drop with the flower.
    I don't know why this works, but it does. I was wise enough to never question Granny .

      Hello, what do you mean by stigma? As in stigma around mental health or drug use, or is this botany term?

    I once had a volunteer tomato plant come up between the concrete porch and the concrete step. I gave it 1 tablespoon of skim milk 2x a week to help it survive it's choice of residence. Gave us beautiful healthy tasty tomatoes

    I've got a tomato plant thats still alive from when it sprouted last fall jist before the frost came, so I took ot out of its small pot and put it into a 35 gallon tote full of amended potting mix and brought it inside into the corner of my bedroom and put a couple 4' full spectrum bulbs and pit the light fixture on parachord with a couple hooks into my cieling and its massive now. I've enjoyed fresh tomatoes all winter which was aewsome and I've also made quite a few clones from the suckers. My grandma worked for Heinz ketchup company for 38 years and she tpld me the secret to tomato plants and watering them. The leaves will tell you exactly when they're getting thirsty, they start to wilt a bit, water slow deep drinks I have a thin diamater tube that I gravity water my indoor plants with out of a 5 gallon bucket. It works amazingly well. I have tomatoes in pots inside and outside as well. My problem isnt the tomatoes its my outside bell pepper plants they're getting blossom end rot because of the rain here...i knew it was something wrong nutrient wise and thank you sir for sharing that neat trick. I'm going to mix up the solution and water with that in the morning. I have to pot my plants outside here because my new house has literally clay two inches down and further! I planted two well established tomato plants last year watered them and 24 hours later one was already dead and upon digging it up the water was all held and didn't drain off hardly at all so they both drowned...and I learned my lesson.
    My other problem is my okra plants are literally eating them and my potato plants alive I put some pesticides down and its like it isn't there

    BER comes from the roots drying out and not being able to uptake nutrients usually during the hottest weather. Keep your soil damp. A moisture meter from lowes or home depot will do wonders. Tomatoes love calcium so add some garden lime. Tomato Tone is an awesome organic fertilizer that wont burn your plant 👍. Good luck everyone!

    • @lilolmecj
      @lilolmecj Рік тому

      My understanding is that it is caused by low calcium (available) in your soil. It will increase as the year advances and your plants pull all available calcium. The calcium is essential for cellular integrity of the fruit. The more acidic your soil, the greater your issues. I start every year by laying down plenty pellet lime on top of my prepared beds. Then I water regularly with a calcium magnesium liquid fertilizer mixed into a bucket of water and each plant gets individually watered with the calcium mixture. With this method I have been pretty successful. Otherwise I wouldn’t be able to raise squash nor tomatoes. I ordered the calcium magnesium liquid online, I didn’t see it at any local garden center. My thoughts on epsom salt is the magnesium probably makes the calcium more available for uptake.

      I think it's got to be a calcium deficiency in my case. I have my tomatoes in a sub irrigated planter with a 5 gallon internal tank, that I monitor closely and completely refill every few days. So, insufficient water isn't the problem.

    I used tums last year on my tomato plants and it did work.

  • @WhatWeDoChannel
    @WhatWeDoChannel 4 роки тому +13

    That’s good info! I do some of those things too! I put eggshells in my compost so that a gradual supply of calcium is always being replenished, I thought I was the only person doing the Tums thing! I mix about ten jumbo tums per watering can load, I dissolve the tums in a cup of hot water from my Keurig coffee machine mix it in the can of water and spray the foliage when the tomatoes get to about golf ball size, one can for about ten plants. I also put a human calcium supplement tablet at the base of each plant when they are young to gradually break down and add calcium. All that stuff is for nothing if you don’t maintain a steady water supply, if it doesn’t rain I water my tomatoes every day!
    God bless
    Klaus

    My experience is that there are often certain varieties that tend to get blossom end rot and need more calsium than others.
    I have grown San Marzano for many years and this variety often gets blossom end rot.
    This is the first year I don’t grow San Marzano because of these problems.
    Nice tip to solve the problem, Scott.

    To Scott: (When considering CN - calcium nitrate) Dissolve one tablespoon of CN (calcium nitrate) in 2-to-2.5 gallons of water and give it to the plants once a week - Calcium and nitrogen requirements will be fulfilled. Tested and it works. Ensure that you do not pour this too much that it drains down the drainage hole/s in the pot (we do not want to waste). Cheers.

    My sister gave a Roma tomato and gave instructions to put lime in, which I didn’t do. The roma is loaded with fruit and yesterday I discovered ber on three of them. Today I am trying your method so I hope to see an end to it. All of my other tomatoes which I grew from seed are doing fine, but I certainly will be keeping an eye on them. This is my first time growing from seed and only the second time growing tomatoes, my first attempt was unsuccessful and I have been a “nervous Nellie” with the plants this year. Thanks again for the tip, very informative.

    Here in KY it is rare for us to have that issue. We have limestone under our soil, practically the whole state, so even our tap water has lime in it (It is what makes our bourbon so good too). I have used agricultural lime on my yard in the past using a broadcast spreader. I think it was my dad that used to say, you have to sweeten the soil in the garden. I generally don't let the ph get below 6.5 in my garden.

    I noticed a green pepper just this morning what appears to be blossom end rot. It happened over night. I look at my garden daily to catch things early. I have the garden lime and Tums so I will try those remedies.

    I tried the third option that you used. My first tomato has bloom rot but the second one does not appear to be affected. I tried it anyway. I put it on all the plants in the raised bed the tomato plant is in. Hopefully this will work. Thank you for the tip!

    Just the video I was looking for today! A pepper plant I overwintered produced its first lovely pepper with blossom end rot. I'm looking for the antacids now. Thanks Scott!

      Usually what looks like BER on squash is really just unpollinated fruits dropping off naturally.

    I have tried this it works I did a small experiment with an individual plant and added a half a cup of milk if you add some magnesium to this it helps it absorb quicker it worked just thought I’d throw it out to youTo try for yourself

    I'm having to add gypsum to my clay soil for this and other issues. Good thing it's cheap because I have a lot of beds and just added eight more this week. Hoping for better tomato yields next year, with a little amending and prep.

    Tums 100% use it when planting add a crushed one to each hole and add later. I find I amazing that 20 videos will tell you 20 different things to use for end rot, I tried Tums years ago and never had a problem since. (Yes I use a light mixture of Jobes a couple times during growing season).
