News of the Times Episode 327 | 1831 & 1835
Today we look at two stories where the ultimate motivation of killing is to catch a husband.
Our first case from 1831 takes place in Coventry, where Mary Ann Higgins, orphan, has been taken in by her kindly uncle who treats her as a daughter. Mary Ann has many admirers but settles on good looking Edward Clarke. Alas, Clarke’s primary focus seems to be getting his hands on her uncle’s money. To keep him, Mary Ann complies.
Our second case from 1835 takes place in Bristol. Mary Ann Burdock has spent her life skirting the law. She finally ends up running a lodging house where handsome young sailor Charles Wade entrances 38 years old Mary Ann. Alas! Wade requires money to marry her and also to start up a shop. Another of Mary Ann’s lodgers conveniently is a wealthy widow who does not believe in banks.
Two crime stories from history motivated by a wish to marry is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.

These two cases of women who were desperate to marry were truly pathetic, period. First case, Mary Ann should have listened to her uncle who raised her about not marrying Edward who she thought loved her. I'm not surprised that she received the death penalty for the poisoning of her uncle. I personally thought that Edward would have received penal servitude instead of being acquitted. Second case, Mary Ann murdered a wealthy widowed lodger to marry Charles and who lied and said she was a poor widow. Mary Ann paid the ultimate price in the end with a death sentence. Do you know whatever happened to the second Mary Ann's two children? Were they able to inherit from her estate/insurance? Great investigating, presenting, backstories, illustrations, photos, and videos, as well. Take care 🦋

You are quite right - there was a wrangle in the end about who would get the money from the murdered lodger. Burdock spent much time with her lawyers trying to ensure the money would go to her children, but the relatives were already working to get their hands on it. There were also debts - including her lawyer's fees (which she complained strongly about). We would have thought, given that she was guilty, that the money would then by right be handed to the relatives - but we are not sure how those legalities worked in the 19th century. You would think she and her family would not be allowed to profit from the death. Most probably, like now, the lawyers got the bulk of it! They would have been paid first! We do not know what happened to Burdock's children - we are guessing the workhouse. Children suffering for their parent's crimes seeemd to be a theme in Victorian England.🤔

In the first case, I cannot believe Edward got away with murder!! I think he was instrumental in the murder of Mary Ann 1's uncle, who was right about Edward's dodgy character!! In the end, Mary Ann paid with her life!!
I reckon Mary Ann 2 knew exactly what she was doing, and murdered the poor widow for her money!! Why lie that Mrs Smith died penniless?! It was obvious she wanted to throw the murdered lady's relatives and friends off the scent!! I wonder what happened to Mary Ann 2's children?! I hope they weren't stigmatized for their mother's misdeeds!!

Yes, we quite agree re Clarke with the first Mary Ann. As for Burdock - she had had a hard life and apparently she fell completely for Wade. We do not know his age - he is only referred to as "young", but we know she was 38. He was most clear apparently that he wanted to marry her but couldn't afford to. Interestingly, after the crime and being caught, she spent enormous effort trying to ensure that the money that was left (which she had gotten from killing the widow) would go to her children. She just sort of ignored the fact that the relatives were owed that money. Sadly, we do not know what happened to the two children. We are sure the question of who got the money probably ended up in court - there were some debts to to be paid off too. We doubt the children managed ot keep hold of it. 🤔Thank you for your support!🙏
@@newsofthetimes Yes, Mary Ann 2 seemed oblivious to the fact that the money she wanted to leave to her children wasn't actually hers to give in the first place!!
@@nadiabrook7871 Yes - it seemd really odd to us - it was like she felt sure she deserved it and it was her money! So strange! We are not sure where she would fall on the psychopathy category....🤔

At one time, people seem to have held a near-universal belief that marriage should be contemplated only by those who could afford to set up house - and especially in an era before the existence of welfare benefits, they certainly had a point. But how grimly ironic, to see murder as the pathway to "doing the right thing."
Well said! 👍 In the second case iwth Burdock - she may have been judged in our day as a desperate cougar. The first case is quite sad - we reckon she was played. The second case, burdock - she knew exactly what she was doing. 🤔
