Quick comment responding to the suggestions to file a lawsuit: 1) There's no Fourth Amendment/Illegal Search and Seizure argument here because the casino isn't a state actor like law enforcement, they are a private entity, so unreasonable search and seizure, at least under the Fourth Amendment, does not apply here. 2) Similarly, this is private property, so the Second Amendment does not apply, either. 3) Finally, there's arguably a colorable invasion of privacy claim, but convincing a jury of the damages to award could be difficult. In Nevada, "To recover for the tort of intrusion, a plaintiff must prove the following elements: 1) an intentional intrusion (physical or otherwise); 2) on the solitude or seclusion of another; 3) that would be highly offensive to a reasonable person." PETA v. Bobby Berosini, Ltd., 111 Nev. 615, 630; 895 P.2d 1269, 1279 (1995). Assuming that this set of facts would rise to that level, I would have no special/compensatory damages as I suffered no monetary loss, and the issue of general damages for something like this is a crapshoot. Discuss.
Also, someone on Twitter pointed me to their weapons policy, although it's silent about searching bags: "What is the weapons policy? Except for on-duty law enforcement and special events with advance approval, Firearms are not allowed on property, including in vehicles. Knives with a blade length greater than 4 inches are also prohibited. Should a guest arrive on property with a weapon, it must be checked with Security on arrival. ABSOLUTELY WRONG!! Private and Public businesses/ Entities have a legal classification as "PUBLIC ACCOMMODATION" PER Federal Law, Title III Reg 28 CFR 36.104. You cannon be denied service. Federal Law 28 CFR 36.202 & 203. Furthermore, you cannot be charged with trespass in public because you have the lawful right to be there and do commerce. Trespass only applies if you are in a private place unlawfully. Such as a if they were closed and you are there now unlawfully. As for the search and gun taking, that is illegal. They cannot force you. Them taking the gun is theft! The most they can do is ask you to leave which is also illegal according to the CFR above. The no gun signs in Nevada are unenforceable! Depends on the state you live in if the signs are enforceable are not. Sue them for your property! You do not give away your rights when you enter anyone's property especially when they are a business open to the public.
@@thetyepilot2501 I wasn't denied service and I wasn't asked to leave, plus they returned the gun at the end of the stay. Arguably, I "consented" to their keeping the gun in the "vault", albeit under duress, because my options were "check it in or check yourself out."
What I have to wonder is if there is a precedence (and I honestly don't know the answer to this), if there is some equal application of Rights that Venetian or other businesses adhere too. That is, you can utilize Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Press, Religion, etc...but when it comes to the 2A, it's not a Right that's protected/respected. Cool, because metro in onsite at most strip casinos. Because Venetian host SHOT show, their security and legal dept knows all the ins and outs. A casino is private property which allows them to refuse service for any reason. Gaming on property allows them greater authority for security.

Wynn/Encore doesn’t even permit pocket knives. They will ask you to open bags. Resorts World will do a pat down search if they suspect anything None of the big companies like MGM/Mirage (obviously) or Harrah’s Caesars will even consider it. They’re private property with gambling on site, that gives them wider authority to limit weapons…the right to refuse service. If the hotel does not have an FFL it is illegal for them to transfer your pistol to themselves! This applies to the entire hotel and all the staff including security! Only police can legally confiscate a handgun without you present. The hotel and it’s staff committed a felony
Unfortunately, the majority of casinos and resorts in Las Vegas operate as autonomous entities under the protection of the Nevada Gaming Commission. The Nevada Gaming Commission is just an amalgamation of Organized Crime. Instead of being run by "families", they operate under the auspice of a "corporation". Much of the public brought this up when the bill was being introduced. The Democrats said that it's law enforcement's discretion in this case and they were sure there would be no problem if the casino were to take temprary possession of the firearm. They said that for a lot of things, including loaning firearms to friends and family for protection. It's all at law enforcement's discretion...
Most casinos n Vegas have metal detectors for bags now since the route 91 incident. So they probably passed them through and it rang so they decided to commence a search.
chances are high that when you check into the hotel there is a clause in the check-in sheet that says they can search your belongings as well as guns not allowed in the room.

You had me at ‘we searched your bags’. A whole department full of Barney Fife’s that probably let real crimes occur while they were running a legal gun owner through a maze of red tape while being treated like a criminal. I’ll never spend another dime there.
What concerns me is that it appears it was actually the bellhops who searched the bags to begin with, not actually security personnel. I'm sure most of them are totally honest in their wages-and-tips jobs, but not all of them. What if there was cash, or controlled drugs in those bags? I wonder how often items just go missing from bags being searched by non-bonded security personnel? They are worried about someone with a locked, secured firearm, so they implement completely insecure and haphazard policies to "secure" that firearm? Another question is how did they open a locked TSA case, to even know there was a firearm in it? To be clear, yes the hotel had the tight to do it. Their terms and conditions say they can, even if no one ever actually reads them. But to do so in such a slipshod, insecure way mocks the point of doing it. Almost as if they want to punish guests who make the mistake he did. Hard to fathom.
@@charlessherman5844 The problem is that most hotels don't do this, because it's a huge waste of time and money. Not to mention 99% of people staying there would be pissed if they found out people are just going through their stuff. I would be absolutely furious if I found out someone rooted through my stuff without asking or making it clear they planned to. Yeah a lot of hotels have that in there as a catch all in case they absolutely have to but isn't daily practice to go through customer's belongings. Quite frankly this hotel should be ashamed of themselves going through their customers belongings, no matter the reasoning behind it; as they say "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". If they continue to do this and customers are made aware it's happening without their knowledge, they will lose an immense amount of customers. I certainly won't stay at any of the places owned by these people again after seeing this.
XRay and metal detectors are not generally considered a search. I go to a venue locally that has metal detectors.. That is all they did.. XRAY it and call him to the desk. It was never "searched" to the legal definition of the term.

This should be brought to the attention of the SHOT show organizers so they can notify attendees of this hotel policy. It may be "their house, their rules" but the public should be advised of the rules so they can make an informed decision as to whether to do business with them or not.
The inconvenience is by design. This is how people infringe our rights without legally crossing the line. This is how the slope works. It becomes too much of a hassle and we just give up due to the harassment.
They've actually committed a felony by searching his bags and confiscating his weapons without his permission nor knowledge at the time. Only the police can take your weapons away. The security is supposed to either just let you go and stop being so damn extra about this crap or detain you and call the authorities to handle things moving forward if they're that perturbed.

When I went to shotshow in 2012 I had an incident with my hotel. We had the do not disturb sign on the door. My wife was in the shower when a maintenance man entered the room without knocking. He claimed he was there to fix the door on the closet, the door was in no way broken. I was insanely pissed. He was obviously there to steal our stuff. Good thing my wife just happened to be there

Exactly. When you purchase a firearm from an ffl you take legal responsibility for that firearm. Anything that's done with it is on you. Ffl dealers have specific safes, inspected by atf and have to follow strict rules when storing, documenting and recording exactly where that firearm is at all times when in their custody. How many people touched that firearm, had access to it, moved it, had custody of it? A bunch of young people, bell boys, "security" and others, and where was it stored? Who's liable if an employee walks out with it and shoots someone or sells it and it's used in a crime? Is your defense 'the hotel told me' ok they aren't a legal entity. Under this logic you could own a taco shop and store firearms in the basement because you're 'holding them for customers'. It's absolute horseshit and if atf did their job they should be making arrests.

For example, when someone hands their car over to an auto mechanic for repairs, they can get into serious trouble if they go through someone's belongings inside the vehicle. Especially if they take something out of the vehicle. My teacher once ran an autoshop and had to fire someone for throwing out someone else's private property(a paper bag, and yes I'm being serious here) that was inside of their car. Especially since the customer noticed and came back all angry. The consent was providing repair service to a vehicle, the only thing that can be touched was the parts that were being serviced. When handing off belongings to someone you're only consenting to the specific service provided and nothing else(AKA you can't rummage through someone else's belongings). With that being said, this gives me the queue to get a lead lined suitcase and a small tsa unfriendly padlock.
@@willharrison3740 the implied consent was for the bellboy to bring the bags to the room, what was not implied in any way shape or form was that the guy was going to search every inch of his bags and physically remove his personally property without his knowledge and not notify him until later (AKA Stealing). the hotel also legally cannot take people guns and hold them without an FFL which i seriously doubt they have based on the way they store guns, they are almost certainly breaking federal laws by doing what they are doing.
Note to Self: Don't ever stay at the Venetian again, unless you like strangers going through your possessions and confiscating or stealing what they want without your consent. Pity, I liked the hotel and the shows there when I visited a few years ago.
i take everything with me when i have to leave for awhile. the housekeepers get so upset that there is nothing to rummage through that they don't clean my room.
Like many commenters mentioned here, just the fact that they went thru your stuff is enough for me to never stay at the Venetian. Gun or No Gun, that's an automatic Deal Breaker. Thank you for sharing this story.
They've got x-rays, metal detectors and as for seizure, hotels in places like this have lots of extra legal considerations, plus they can probably argue you handed the gun to them when you hand over the bag.
That entire process was intentionally that inconvenient for a reason, they don’t want you to bring guns to their hotel… that’s crazy! I’ll keep that in mind, THANK YOU for sharing.
How is that crazy? Have you heard about the Las Vegas massacre in 2017 where a man killed 60 people? It's only natural that security would be especially vigilant now and tighten up measures. They wouldn't want such a tragedy to occur again.

If I’ve learned anything from Fallout New Vegas, your first mistake is that you didn’t pick up the perk that allows you to conceal any weapon in the casinos. Until you pick that up, stick to a silenced .22 pistol or a ripper.
This is the epitome of security theater. It's the absolute minimum they think they can do to prevent having guns in their hotel. But as you pointed out it does absolutely nothing except inconvenience a minority of the people carrying guns in their hotel.
Perhaps it is but after what happened in Vegas not that long ago and all he criticism that hotel received not to mention the lawsuits it would be stupid of them to not. Whether their rules and procedures are effective or not can be debated but you just can't blame them for being careful.
@@CCW1911 Well as shown they have plenty of room in the hotels to dedicate a section in the underground to be a storage armory and suit up area (kind of like changing rooms in clothing stores to equip your firearms before you go out). Reinforce that section (near check in), add a vault door, 24 hour surveillance, and guards to protect guests property 24/7, give them the option of a security password along with 2 forms of ID (at least one picture ID ) or an identification chip (kind of like a debit/credit card) check ticket to keep on their person, and be able to "check" it out at any time night or day. That way the guests property is protected and the hotel is doing at least some due diligence. Hey if they wanted to take it a step further they could add a gun store and an underground shooting range sound proofed so the guests and staff didn't hear it...I mean I would stay in a hotel like that in a damn heartbeat.

Venetian has been running bags through a scanner since after 9/11. I worked Security at Venetian from 2000-2007. The owner who has passed bought one of those airport scanners and has it down in the basement where all bags given to bellstaff get scanned. He was worth 30 billion dollars so he was able to afford one. The check in policy was never this stupid. Venetian/Palazzo are now owned by a corporation.

3 biggest takeaways - No.1 Understand people will look in your bags and snoop in your room so be prepared for that. Anybody who is near you is another set of eyes to be aware of, good bad or ugly - don't trust anyone you don't already trust. No.2 Do NOT let anyone handle your gear that isnt absolutely necessary to do so. Checking your gear for a flight is necessary but outside of that absolute necessity - do NOT let anyone you don't know handle your gear or even your general belongings. No bellhops, no cabbies, none of that. The more hands on your belongings, the higher chance that something will go stupid. No.3 The Grey Man doctrine is the best doctrine. No one except you should know you're armed unless legally necessity requires you to say so. Your life will always be easier if you're as unnoticed by others as possible. No one knows you carry, no one sees your carry, and no one hears you talking about how you are carrying - the less idiocy you'll run into.
Thank you for documenting my SHOT 2022 experience! I got the upgraded treatment, interview in a separate room interrogating me on why I was trying to smuggle a firearm in. My silence prevailed & they released me after checking my weapon.
Lessons learned, 1. Always wear your pistol on your person concealed. 2. Never let THEM take your bags to your room for you, always handle your own bags, or have someone who you trust or hired do it.

I would imagine they put you through this because you displayed irresponsibility with firearms by handing them to someone you don’t know. Also you have a UA-cam channel had they not followed their procedures you could put them on blast.
James agreed to searches of his bags the moment he signed a contract with them and submitted his luggage to them. They xray every piece of luggage and state this on their website and most definitely on the contract you sign when you book/check into a room.
Depending on what I was there for, I might just spend a day just going in and out, making them run the security detail back and forth. Get a couple of buddies to join in.

They look through guests bags yet anyone off the street can walk right into the casino and do a “mass event”.. So guest harassment over a little locked pistol case with a guest who complied and clearly displayed their willingness to get the situation settled was a top priority rather than being on the casino floor ready to take action against folks who may cause actual harm. Ill never stay at their casino now.

Even in the thumbnail, that's three security guards who could be performing actual work in lieu of wasting time on a person with a low-power, low-capacity personal handgun and 30 total rounds of ammunition who is acting completely within the confines of the law.

A few random bystanders may have witnessed this stupidity, but none of them would have had any idea what was going on. I'm sure it's a firearms policy meant to catch the guy bringing in a bag of rifles and magazines that also technically catches a pair of pistols. As well I'm sure Security escorted a lot of attendees out of the Casino because they were caught concealed carrying where they thought it was allowed when it wasn't.

This happened to me in January of this year when I made the mistake of staying there for my mini moon and had my firearm in a bag. My process was not quite as bad as yours but it was still a huge pain to lock it up and get it back. One guy was really rude about it. He basically told me I could stay somewhere else if I did not like it in a not so nice manner. I was pissed the whole time. I definitely will never stay at that hotel again. They are making the place less safe by doing this. Absolutely ridiculous.
Yeah I agree. I’m sure mr jelly donut and the other security there are top brass. In reality they wouldn’t stop any serious threat effectively or at all. Which would leave everyone else defenseless. Dumb.
@@kirksmith347 Most will if you let them. I never let them. I have carried and kept guns in the Venetian several times, but they never knew because they never get to look at my stuff. To note - there are no signs forbidding firearms, at least there weren't when I was last there a couple years ago.

@@MrJest2 There are signs at the entrances to the Venetian. They’ve been there for years. But they are on tiny plaques on the wall. The signs don’t have any legal weight in Nevada though, and I’ve carried in the Venetian at least once a week for years.
THIS is why I NEVER let ANYONE handle my bags at ANY hotel! I was at the Sig Academy a few weeks ago for several days. Walked in and out of the hotel several times carrying what is obviously an SBR soft case slung with a case full of handguns in the other hand. No one said boo. So yeah, The Venetian can suck it. @@Tannim98032 had to look it up. Best Western Plus Executive Court Inn & Conference Center in Manchester. It's not far from the Academy and it has a restaurant next door and pretty much anything you'd need in the area. Staff was very nice, rooms were spotless, it was quiet and reasonably priced. What more could you want?👍

Here are a couple of observations: 1) NEVER leave your gun unattended. 2) If you are not going to carry it, keep it in a backpack on your person - never check it in and certainly never let anyone search your bags. 3) Vote with you wallet and don't do business with companies that don't respect your individual rights!!!
NEVER means you cannot fly to a destination and bring a gun with you. If I followed NEVER, I couldn't hunt in several states...that are across the country from me. Good idea for local or car travel but not for many who want their gun at the destination end of a flight.

Yea, I'm too paranoid about losing a firearm to theft - unless it can be on my person at all times, then it stays home locked up. I was surprised that he let the Bellboy take his bagged firearm to his room. I've never taken a flight and had a firearm checked in - I just don't trust airline employees with such items.

I would edit that to the effect that keeping your firearm on your person would prevent any further stress. The firearm was the only thing to cause a fuss in this scenario. Had James simply had it on his person, he would never have known if his luggage he gave to the bellhop was even searched ✌️😎

Imagine the bell hop being anti2a and straight up stealing the firearm instead of taking it to the security office. I would have never turned a bag with my gun in it over to the bellboy in the first place. Also, I think it's very questionable that the hotel took it upon themselves to go through your bags without you present.

They scan ever bag that gets checked. They have 25 dogs on site, more then the city. They also scan and video each license plate and person who walks in. I toured the security facility
Yeah, so after reading quite a few responses, finally someone said what viscerally was my initial reaction while watching the video. I get it, you want to start having fun, but how much time would it have taken to go up to the room, secure the firearm however you chose to, and then commence a night of debauchery? Or forego the alcohol and wear the friggin weapon. After more than 25 years of carrying a weapon, I’ve chosen security, hundreds of times, over drinking in a public place. But that’s just me.

Without your Permission, without you Present, without informing you that they were doing so, then confiscated your firearm, for which you had a permit, while they were hosting a gun convention, my God the hypocrisy, would have literally driven me insane. I stayed at the Venetian a couple years back and I wasn’t sure if I could carry in the casino or not so I Left my Glock in my bag. They searched my bag, called me, and I went through the exact same process you just did! Word for word. It has to be on purpose at this point since their procedure still sucks years later.

You have a reasonable expectation of privacy but them searching what you left in their care isn't covered.

Security doufus, "Yeah, he has all of his ID and the names and addresses and pictures match but he doesn't have his top secret, super indelible, micro-stripped ticket thingy, so should I still give him his personal property back?" At least he didn't ask if you knew the secret password or how to do the secret handshake!
Not only that, he mentioned they were incompetent. I learned that if you keep things simple and ask the right questions and assert your rights they usually back off. I would have argues with them. They had no right to take it.
If they are doing illegal search and seizures you can always ask them where the money you had in the bag is? When they say there was no money, demand a copy of the video from the search to verify it was not taken by them. That will shed some light on the procedure, motive, and attitude of the staff doing the search.

WTF were they thinking when then decided to search your bags, especially outside your presence??? There was nothing stopping you from making a claim that something very expensive (cash, jewelry, etc) was missing from your bag. This policy is going to blow up in their faces.
Yeah, I'm with you. If they detected the firearm in a scan the right move would be to call you down, since they were going to anyway, and have you open the bag to surrender the firearm to security. Having you have to march around the hotel was also bullshit. They're a service industry company, they'll bring a muffin all the way to your door at no charge, send security to the Front Desk to collect the weapon.
Step 1. go to a jewelry store and get some pictures of you wearing some major bling. Step 2. Go to Vegas and hand your bag with a pistol in it to the bellhops. Step 3. When they tell you they took your gun, claim your jewelry is missing. You have photo proof of you wearing the jewelry. Step 4. Sue for profit

They have no right to search my possessions without either a warrant or my presence. Even so much as opening my bags out of my presence is akin to breaking and entering into my home. Sorry you had to go through this James. This is par for the course in Vegas. They tried this on me as well when I was checking in for SHOT a few years ago. I also stay at Venetian or Palazzo. One of the bellhops who opened the door to my cab asked "do you have any guns with you?" I just looked at him, smiled, walked past him and into the hotel. This is what happens when you give people "power" over other people. Everyone starts acting like the Stasi and wanting to get into each other's bizznas.
I had a similar experience in 2019 at the Flamingo Hotel. I travel with Pelican cases for my luggage and gear, regardless of if I am traveling with my firearms. I checked my bags because I was 3 hours too early to check in. When I went back to check in I was told I needed to see security for my bags. I was walked down to the basement where they informed me they needed to search my bags. When I asked why, they said because of the type of luggage they needed to make sure I didn't have any firearms in them, before they would give me back my property. I was only stopped because of the "tactical" look, and they stated "normal" luggage would not have been flagged. Also, not letting them hold my bags would also have no triggered anything. So, they have a garbage "policy" with garbage enforcement, coupled with theft and forced compliance under duress.
A garbage policy executed by underpaid , undertrained people who simpky tick boxes, and ask you for a business card as an ID. This whole story is creepy, because if you get annoyed or voice your displeasure, they will throw the book at you or harass you. I will never stay at the #Venetian. this is creepy.
I've stayed at hundreds of Hotels. None have ever searched my bags. No Hotel has ever asked me to check a gun. Even those that don't allow or ask you not to have Firearms. What kind of hotel is this?
Someone should organize a "Malicious Compliance Day" where dozens of people come and make the hotel go through the whole process every couple hours, each. Just overwhelm them and make civil complaints if they refuse to return your property. Just over and over and over...

The wife wanted to stay at this exact same hotel next month - I told her that we will not be staying and to find another…sure “their hotel their rules” but to have the audacity to search a guest bags is ridiculous - this needs to be pushed out everywhere so people are aware of their policy of searching bags. Are they searching your room when you not there as well?

If you check it in with the bell hop they run them through an X-ray scanner just like the airport does. I’m surprised he didn’t know that already considering how long he’s been staying there.

" The entire set up was also worryingly confused, with all that walking, rooms, guns everywhere. Imagine someone robbs that storage room with hundreds of guns in it ? It just proves customer service is dead. The Venetian like every other hotel and casino in Vegas feels you owe them. Customers are just marks to fleece. I have stayed in several different places there for conferences over the years. The difference between 30 years ago and today is shocking.
Only ever stayed at Excalibur, Flamingo, The Rio, Binion's and Vegas Club downtown, and the Las Vegas Hilton and a small place called Tuscany. Which hotels do you recommend that have a vestige of customer service? The only ones I'm considering are Cosmopolitan and Palms Condominiums, maybe Golden Nugget, Red Rock, or The Mirage.
I think they were just doing him a favor, and removing the ability for him to have an accidental discharge, you know? while he's "crushing beers" and what not through out the night? I can't believe he basically admitted that if this hadn't happened he would have been drinking and concealed carrying. Also doesn't sound like it would have been out of the norm for him.
You describe 90% of all customer service in Vegas. You owe them for bring there. They are only nice to you so that you will spend your money and tip generously. It isn't hospitality there, it is solely business. It's been that way for decades now.
If those rules were not disclosed upfront then, in my opinion, there is clear reason to file a suit. I have great concerns about a hotel who will search a guest bags without notification of doing so.

So I’m a former bellhop but at a different casino. For sure after October 1 everyone was on edge about people staying there and what they were bringing up to their rooms. That has since died off now as it’s been long enough that some people have forgot. Even back then though our policy was if it’s in plain sight we tell security. If you conceal it I can’t say anything to you. Also if it was in an oddball box like a pelican case or something how am I to know if it’s a gun or camera gear or whatever. I only had to do it once cause the guest was acting like he was on drugs and I didn’t feel comfortable taking his stuff period, so our policy is call security. Security comes and only in front of the guest goes through their items. We wouldn’t be able to just free for all on anyones bag in our back storage room. Security had to be there and the guest who owned the items had to be there. So the fact the Venetian has this rather loose and overboard policy in place is kind of dumb IMO. They make it more of a headache than it needs to be really
Searching through your bags when checking in is outrageous. I don't care what they are looking for, it is well understood that they are to secure your bags which would imply placing them somewhere that no one will touch them. As far as a no firearm policy that needs to be stated on the front door and when making the reservation. In Texas there is a legal placard that has to be placed at the entrance to warn you of their policy.
In Texas a hotel and the like cannot prohibit renters from having firearms in their rooms and the ingress/egress areas needed to get to/from your room with your firearms. They can only prohibit firearms in common areas.
As someone who lives in Vegas and concealed carries all the time, I can tell you that you definitely messed up by not just wearing it in. Almost all the casinos are "gun-free" places, and all the strip casinos are. But I've known several casino security guys and one club bouncer in town and they all basically say "just don't make it obvious, don't brandish it, we know people have concealed guns but we don't care as long as they don't make a scene". Most of our movie theaters and a lot of the best restaurants in town are in casinos, so I walk past "no weapons" signs while carrying a lot.
@@MrBadjohn69 Only if they say anything. If they see it, they can tell me to leave. I only get in legal trouble if I don't leave when asked to. Nevada has a very particular culture around concealed carry. In both my initial concealed carry permit class and my renewal class, both instructors told the class the same thing. Everyone who carries concealed in this town ignores those signs.
I had nearly this exact same scenario happen to me in March of this year. It was a total clusterfuck. And I’m a Nevada resident with a Nevada CCW. The bellhops and concierge folks that were supposedly trying to get security for me that were running around before security arrived were totally freaked out that I not only had a gun, but that I wanted it back after they fuckin stole it from me. They treated me like I was screaming aloha snack bar in the fuckin lobby. I was talking to the head guard escorting me because we had a 40 min walk all the fuckin way across Vegas basically explained he and most other guards hated this stupid policy, and then we talked about the irony of the security theater and that I could be carrying a concealed firearm, legally, being escorted by three guys who had radios lol. It’s such a joke, and is the last time I stay at The Venetian, and I’ve blown tens of thousands there. My biggest issues were the same as yours. There was zero forewarning that this was even a thing, and it was such a nightmare to retrieve something that, incidentally since they don’t have FFL’s I’m pretty sure is completely illegal, that it makes it not worth it to stay there. The one bright light from security was the Sargent, I can’t remember his name, basically suggested I leave the hotel once I’d retrieved it, circle the block, and mind my own business for the duration of the stay.
@@Cp12345737 James answered this in a pinned post. That said, I checked with some local FFL’s and NGC folks I’m close to, and it’s a complete violation of Nevada law for them to do this. The problem is finding legislators or DA’s in Vegas who will take action against them because at the end of the day the law only matters if someone is willing to enforce it.
i live in Vegas and have a ccw, the law here states that private property owners ie the casino, can restrict people from carrying a concealed weapon, and it is a crime, gross misdemeanor. But on that same note they cannot restrict your ability to open carry only ask you to leave and if you don't you can be charged with trespass there are no weapons charges that can come of that. Nevada is kind of weird where you have the right to open carry in more places that you can concealed carry.
This is a hotel. In Las Vegas. Where there was an infamous hotel shooting a few years ago. If you refuse to give your bag to the bellhop (to search it), they're going to assume that you have a gun in it. They're going to search your bag later (also without your consent). Either that or security will approach you directly and demand to search your bag under threat of trespass.

Sounds like following the rule of staying strapped all the time would have saved you a ton of BS; I won't be stay at that hotel on my next trip regardless of whether they change their policy at this point. It really breaks my heart to see this. I just came back from my 1st Vegas trip yesterday, had a great time staying at the MGM. I did travel with my firearm and carried the entire time including when I toured the Venetian and it's shops, and I really really wanted to stay there the next time I visited Vegas. If searching people's bags and confiscating property is the norm then I'll happily go elsewhere.
I would have found if there was other lodging available, and if there was anything else available I would have cancelled my reservation right then and there. I don't see how you're not more pissed they searched your bags. Granted, I always lock my bags, especially when there is a gun in them; I also don't use the bell hop, I have a suitcase and duffel bag with wheels, so it's easy enough to roll either of them with me. Thanks for the heads up on the Venetian though; I will never stay there now, so I don't have to worry about them.
Two major issues. First they went through your property without your consent or your knowledge. Second is this illusion of security all of the businesses constantly present to the public.
Doesn't seem like they went through his property as it seems like they x-ray the checked bags so that would have been when they discovered the gun. Notice the gun and case were still in the bag so I get the idea they never went through his bag. That said I don't like the policy when people are allowed to walk through the casino carrying a gun. If they really are worried about guns in the building then they should force everyone to go through an x-ray machine and give people the option to check their weapon or leave. Not that it would do much to help convince customers to come back when they have to now go through a hotel version of TSA experience every time they enter the building.
Stayed in Caesar Palace and Planet Hollywood with my ccw. Before arriving at the hotel I called the 2 hotels customer service regarding their policy for checking in my ccw. The rep said “we dont checked in handgun and besides it’s yours you can keep it in your room”. Kudos to CP and PH, from that experience I always stayed with that hotels.
My wife and I are looking forward to our first vacation in ten years in vegas this winter and the Venetian/ Palazzo were on our short list of places to stay. This is now off the table and this is purely on principle as as a resident of the DPRNYC I am already deprived of my human rights. They have a right to say their house their rules and I respect that. I simply choose to take my money elsewhere.
I don’t think the Venetian is the only casino on the strip searching/crating bags left with the front desk/bellhop. Not sure if they would do the same as the Venetian but I believe it’s a thing now. After the shootings on Fremont street I think they are or have installed metal detectors. I remember back in late 2020 I believe it was, going to Vegas when street crime exploded on the strip. A security guard at Bally’s checked my wife’s purse for weapons when we walked in. That was the first time I saw that and the only time. That hasn’t happened the last couple of trips to the strip.
I’m 45 years old, I remember going on hunting trips as a kid and walking into the hotels carrying my rifle all of us no issues. After September 11th they required use to check the rifles into security. It was the same process you had and a pain to deal with.
Honestly I've been on the fence about Mr. Reeves for a bit but the thoughtfulness of this video and him taking a devils advocate role, not giving into base frustrations has won me over. The fact that through a difficult situation where many would have gone apoplectic he remained calm and considerate means alot. Too many people stop reading the constitution at the 2nd amendment. So good on you Mr. Reeves with your handling of the situation and even more so for your responses to the many and varied comments. I'm now a big fan.
Thanks for doing the video and getting the word out. Had a similar incident in Boston. Good on ya for keeping a level head. Searching your bag or being treated like a criminal is not ok. I hope the hotel will change their policy or at least post it somewhere, but I doubt it.

This video was an interesting blend of hotel service rant, travel video, expert legal opinion from a professional (especially in the comment section), personal photo and video album, gun guy griping, a record of what it's like to cover SHOT Show with TFB, and general opinions about visiting Las Vegas and The Venetian from someone who has done it regularly. Who else would or could make a video like this but James Reeves? I love it. I'm reluctant to single out any one moment, as I liked it all. But one of the moments I laughed at was sharing a toast with Kirsten Joy Weiss in impressive style at 0:54. 🍺🍷 It was fun seeing all the silly photos: drinking poses at parties, games at dinner, making faces at industry celebs, goofing off on escalators, disco balls in cars, scheming with Hop and the crew, sometimes trying to work. It was a little taste of the social atmosphere. It's also nice that you brought your niece to a gondola ride and got remarried by Elvis. Plus I've seen in recent videos that you're kind to your momma. James Reeves, family man!
First off: Always go to the restroom and rearm immediately after retrieving your bags from baggage claim. (airports are sketchy places.) Secondly: find another hotel.
Even if you can get past the search of personal items , the fact that they do this and clearly do not have a process that is streamlined… at any time much less at a freaken gun show weekend is insane!!! I frequently stay at this property and I will NEVER EVER stay at this property again!

I don't know what to tell you. There are lots of hotels in Vegas that won't or can't enforce gun regulations after the 2017 shooting, none you'll be very comfortable with. Because we as a nation can't regulate gun ownership, Vegas had to step up or go broke. Maybe the next time there's reasonable gun regulation that will help to protect innocent people from mass shooters you think differently on it.

The government hires armed guards to protect people and property they care about like government buildings, national parks, the President etc. But they do not hire them for schools because? Can you even give an example of reasonable in the context that each citizen has the right to self defense with a weapon in general use per the SC and the constitution. Each year 1.5 to 2.5 million people save themselves from bodily harm or death in the USA using their gun. You willing to see all those people suffer or die when all we really need is real security in schools or to allow people to carry in the "gun free zones" so there is more protection from criminals who take guns everywhere?
I wouldnt feel safe known they will search my bags without me knowing it, or being present at the search. They could easily had planted something to try to nail you for it. If they wanted to search your bags, I think they should call you down so you are present. You know. Like they doing at customs in an airport or something like that. Beside they could had planted something, they could also had stolen something from you
"Their house their rules," That's not how this works. Just because you're in your house, doesn't mean you can illegally transfer a firearm from one party to another and it suddenly becomes legal. It is straight-up illegal for them to take possession of your firearm unless they have an FFL, and they don't.

@@patmcbride9853 You’ll get no argument from me about not going to any Vegas hotel, but they’re all (the ones on the strip) going to have the same terms and conditions. They probably even use the same counsel.
I live an hour outside of Vegas but I work and often go to events in Vegas and I can tell you that what the casinos don't know doesn't hurt them. They all post signs banning firearms from their property, but they also know that so many people carry concealed here that they usually take the approach of as long as we don't see it or know about it, it's cool. I know several people that work in security or concierge at multiple casinos and they all say the same thing. Next time, mount your weapon outside the airport and carry on...
I was a security officer for most of my working career and I am now retired what I see here is a hotel which does not clearly State the exact procedure you need to do to bring your weapon into their hotel during Shot Show. Considering the size of the event what they should have done is put on their website a information page which states exactly what the hotel wants you to do, so you can safely bring your legally licensed weapon into the hotel with as little difficulty as possible. And I can also see the other side of it as well Hotel Security Management all across the strip after the shooting incident a few years ago ended up being left on edge., and a lot of the current policies were written by the hotel chain lawyers in order to minimize liability. Believe me when I say the actual Security Management and operational Hotel security staff were never consulted when it became time to develop and implement those policies now in place. They have been placed between a rock and a hard place.
If the hotel's policy (or any corporate policy) "makes sense" to begin with, they can't then choose whomever they want to harass. This is 100% a case of a know "gun celebrity" getting harassed. These hotels have FACIAL RECOGNITION cameras, there's there's 0% chance they didn't know exactly who they were harassing.
We went for my wife's 30th birthday. Not to this hotel but, we opted to not have room cleaning. Two days later, we were smoking pot in the room and I hear a knock. I look out the peephole and there was a lady with a pantsuit and a security guy. We got a smoking room just so we wouldn't have to worry but, paranoia set in. I answered the door anyway and they told me that because I didn't get room cleaning that they have to come do a wellness check. Freaked me out. 🤣🤣🤣
Any security guards trying to enforce rules that are not clearly posted and, in this case, are violating federal law, should be physically subdued by any means necessary as a threat to society at large. Thugs for hire are the lowest form of human being and deserve suitable treatment.
@@blade420playElite , Excuse games that they play. I always hang the "do not disturb tag". Even when I leave the room for any reason. I simply don't want anyone in my room while I'm there. I trust no one, and I'm not needy or high maintenance. They can have their room back once I'm done paying for it.
I live in Vegas and your experience is insane. If I were you I'd never say at that hotel again. I've worked for some of the shows in the conversion center and it is a very long walk there and back. Usually, at the shows, there are at least 20 police officers there so I've never carried my gun and the company I worked for would have freaked out even though I have a Nevada concealed weapon permit. PS: Las Vegas is a Liberal City. When I moved there 15 years ago you had to register ALL your weapons with the police department. They would issue you a card that you HAD to carry with you when you carried that gun. If you didn't have the card OR got the wrong card for a different gun they would confiscate your gun. Also, if you ever went into North Las Vegas all the laws there are different. Once you arrived in N. Las Vegas you are not a criminal. Insane place. Liberals ruin everywhere they live. Including Las Vegas.
They don't have blue cards anymore, that ended in like 2009. You can carry whatever you want open carry over 21yrs old. And conceal any loaded pistol you want with a nevada ccw or ccw from a recognized state.

I’m a pitboss on the strip & ive never heard of our security searching anyone’s bag without them being present, or even being present. It is policy that ppl can’t carry in our hotel/casino, and I’ve seen people doing it & of course security shows up & does whatever they do. And during shot show we have tons of people there playing that are here for it & they ask me if they can carry. My response is always simple, as long as it’s not seen it’s not there as far as I’m concerned. If I know you’re carrying but it’s canceled I’m not stopping you from doing it.
Quick comment responding to the suggestions to file a lawsuit:
1) There's no Fourth Amendment/Illegal Search and Seizure argument here because the casino isn't a state actor like law enforcement, they are a private entity, so unreasonable search and seizure, at least under the Fourth Amendment, does not apply here.
2) Similarly, this is private property, so the Second Amendment does not apply, either.
3) Finally, there's arguably a colorable invasion of privacy claim, but convincing a jury of the damages to award could be difficult. In Nevada, "To recover for the tort of intrusion, a plaintiff must prove the following elements: 1) an intentional intrusion (physical or otherwise); 2) on the solitude or seclusion of another; 3) that would be highly offensive to a reasonable person." PETA v. Bobby Berosini, Ltd., 111 Nev. 615, 630; 895 P.2d 1269, 1279 (1995). Assuming that this set of facts would rise to that level, I would have no special/compensatory damages as I suffered no monetary loss, and the issue of general damages for something like this is a crapshoot.

"What is the weapons policy?
Except for on-duty law enforcement and special events with advance approval, Firearms are not allowed on property, including in vehicles. Knives with a blade length greater than 4 inches are also prohibited.
Should a guest arrive on property with a weapon, it must be checked with Security on arrival. It will be safely secured and returned to the guest upon departure or as necessary."

ABSOLUTELY WRONG!! Private and Public businesses/ Entities have a legal classification as "PUBLIC ACCOMMODATION" PER Federal Law, Title III Reg 28 CFR 36.104. You cannon be denied service. Federal Law 28 CFR 36.202 & 203. Furthermore, you cannot be charged with trespass in public because you have the lawful right to be there and do commerce. Trespass only applies if you are in a private place unlawfully. Such as a if they were closed and you are there now unlawfully. As for the search and gun taking, that is illegal. They cannot force you. Them taking the gun is theft! The most they can do is ask you to leave which is also illegal according to the CFR above. The no gun signs in Nevada are unenforceable! Depends on the state you live in if the signs are enforceable are not. Sue them for your property! You do not give away your rights when you enter anyone's property especially when they are a business open to the public.
@@thetyepilot2501 I wasn't denied service and I wasn't asked to leave, plus they returned the gun at the end of the stay. Arguably, I "consented" to their keeping the gun in the "vault", albeit under duress, because my options were "check it in or check yourself out."
What I have to wonder is if there is a precedence (and I honestly don't know the answer to this), if there is some equal application of Rights that Venetian or other businesses adhere too. If the hotel does not have an FFL it is illegal for them to transfer your pistol to themselves! This applies to the entire hotel and all the staff including security! Only police can legally confiscate a handgun without you present. The hotel and it’s staff committed a felony

Much of the public brought this up when the bill was being introduced. The Democrats said that it's law enforcement's discretion in this case and they were sure there would be no problem if the casino were to take temprary possession of the firearm. They said that for a lot of things, including loaning firearms to friends and family for protection. It's all at law enforcement's discretion...

Most casinos n Vegas have metal detectors for bags now since the route 91 incident. So they probably passed them through and it rang so they decided to commence a search.

What I find most concerning, not only did they search your bags, but they did so WITHOUT you present.
chances are high that when you check into the hotel there is a clause in the check-in sheet that says they can search your belongings as well as guns not allowed in the room.
Yeah, plus they've got x-rays and probably metal detectors. Do those first, search if something is suspicious.

You had me at ‘we searched your bags’. A whole department full of Barney Fife’s that probably let real crimes occur while they were running a legal gun owner through a maze of red tape while being treated like a criminal. I’ll never spend another dime there.
What concerns me is that it appears it was actually the bellhops who searched the bags to begin with, not actually security personnel. I'm sure most of them are totally honest in their wages-and-tips jobs, but not all of them. What if there was cash, or controlled drugs in those bags? I wonder how often items just go missing from bags being searched by non-bonded security personnel? They are worried about someone with a locked, secured firearm, so they implement completely insecure and haphazard policies to "secure" that firearm? Another question is how did they open a locked TSA case, to even know there was a firearm in it?
To be clear, yes the hotel had the tight to do it. Their terms and conditions say they can, even if no one ever actually reads them. But to do so in such a slipshod, insecure way mocks the point of doing it. Almost as if they want to punish guests who make the mistake he did. Hard to fathom.

Not to mention 99% of people staying there would be pissed if they found out people are just going through their stuff. Yeah a lot of hotels have that in there as a catch all in case they absolutely have to but isn't daily practice to go through customer's belongings. Quite frankly this hotel should be ashamed of themselves going through their customers belongings, no matter the reasoning behind it; as they say "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". If they continue to do this and customers are made aware it's happening without their knowledge, they will lose an immense amount of customers. I certainly won't stay at any of the places owned by these people again after seeing this.

This should be brought to the attention of the SHOT show organizers so they can notify attendees of this hotel policy. It may be "their house, their rules" but the public should be advised of the rules so they can make an informed decision as to whether to do business with them or not.

When I went to shotshow in 2012 I had an incident with my hotel. We had the do not disturb sign on the door. My wife was in the shower when a maintenance man entered the room without knocking. He claimed he was there to fix the door on the closet, the door was in no way broken. I was insanely pissed. He was obviously there to steal our stuff. Good thing my wife just happened to be there

Exactly. When you purchase a firearm from an ffl you take legal responsibility for that firearm. Anything that's done with it is on you. Ffl dealers have specific safes, inspected by atf and have to follow strict rules when storing, documenting and recording exactly where that firearm is at all times when in their custody. How many people touched that firearm, had access to it, moved it, had custody of it? A bunch of young people, bell boys, "security" and others, and where was it stored? Who's liable if an employee walks out with it and shoots someone or sells it and it's used in a crime? Is your defense 'the hotel told me' ok they aren't a legal entity. Under this logic you could own a taco shop and store firearms in the basement because you're 'holding them for customers'. It's absolute horseshit and if atf did their job they should be making arrests.

For example, when someone hands their car over to an auto mechanic for repairs, they can get into serious trouble if they go through someone's belongings inside the vehicle. Especially if they take something out of the vehicle. My teacher once ran an autoshop and had to fire someone for throwing out someone else's private property(a paper bag, and yes I'm being serious here) that was inside of their car. Especially since the customer noticed and came back all angry. The consent was providing repair service to a vehicle, the only thing that can be touched was the parts that were being serviced. When handing off belongings to someone you're only consenting to the specific service provided and nothing else(AKA you can't rummage through someone else's belongings). With that being said, this gives me the queue to get a lead lined suitcase and a small tsa unfriendly padlock.
@@willharrison3740 the implied consent was for the bellboy to bring the bags to the room, what was not implied in any way shape or form was that the guy was going to search every inch of his bags and physically remove his personally property without his knowledge and not notify him until later (AKA Stealing). the hotel also legally cannot take people guns and hold them without an FFL which i seriously doubt they have based on the way they store guns, they are almost certainly breaking federal laws by doing what they are doing.
Note to Self: Don't ever stay at the Venetian again, unless you like strangers going through your possessions and confiscating or stealing what they want without your consent. Pity, I liked the hotel and the shows there when I visited a few years ago.

They've got x-rays, metal detectors and as for seizure, hotels in places like this have lots of extra legal considerations, plus they can probably argue you handed the gun to them when you hand over the bag.

How is that crazy? Have you heard about the Las Vegas massacre in 2017 where a man killed 60 people? It's only natural that security would be especially vigilant now and tighten up measures. They wouldn't want such a tragedy to occur again.

This is the epitome of security theater. It's the absolute minimum they think they can do to prevent having guns in their hotel. But as you pointed out it does absolutely nothing except inconvenience a minority of the people carrying guns in their hotel.
Perhaps it is but after what happened in Vegas not that long ago and all he criticism that hotel received not to mention the lawsuits it would be stupid of them to not. Whether their rules and procedures are effective or not can be debated but you just can't blame them for being careful.
@@CCW1911 Well as shown they have plenty of room in the hotels to dedicate a section in the underground to be a storage armory and suit up area (kind of like changing rooms in clothing stores to equip your firearms before you go out). Reinforce that section (near check in), add a vault door, 24 hour surveillance, and guards to protect guests property 24/7, give them the option of a security password along with 2 forms of ID (at least one picture ID ) or an identification chip (kind of like a debit/credit card) check ticket to keep on their person, and be able to "check" it out at any time night or day. That way the guests property is protected and the hotel is doing at least some due diligence. Hey if they wanted to take it a step further they could add a gun store and an underground shooting range sound proofed so the guests and staff didn't hear it...I mean I would stay in a hotel like that in a damn heartbeat.

Venetian has been running bags through a scanner since after 9/11. I worked Security at Venetian from 2000-2007. The owner who has passed bought one of those airport scanners and has it down in the basement where all bags given to bellstaff get scanned. He was worth 30 billion dollars so he was able to afford one. The check in policy was never this stupid. Venetian/Palazzo are now owned by a corporation.

3 biggest takeaways -
No.1 Understand people will look in your bags and snoop in your room so be prepared for that. Anybody who is near you is another set of eyes to be aware of, good bad or ugly - don't trust anyone you don't already trust.
No.2 Do NOT let anyone handle your gear that isnt absolutely necessary to do so. Checking your gear for a flight is necessary but outside of that absolute necessity - do NOT let anyone you don't know handle your gear or even your general belongings. No bellhops, no cabbies, none of that. The more hands on your belongings, the higher chance that something will go stupid.
No.3 The Grey Man doctrine is the best doctrine. No one except you should know you're armed unless legally necessity requires you to say so. Your life will always be easier if you're as unnoticed by others as possible. No one knows you carry, no one sees your carry, and no one hears you talking about how you are carrying - the less idiocy you'll run into.

Thank you for documenting my SHOT 2022 experience! I got the upgraded treatment, interview in a separate room interrogating me on why I was trying to smuggle a firearm in. My silence prevailed & they released me after checking my weapon.
Lessons learned,
1. Always wear your pistol on your person concealed.
2. Never let THEM take your bags to your room for you, always handle your own bags, or have someone who you trust or hired do it.

James agreed to searches of his bags the moment he signed a contract with them and submitted his luggage to them. They xray every piece of luggage and state this on their website and most definitely on the contract you sign when you book/check into a room.
I'd say the way to deal with this is to publicize the hotel and its policies and let people decide if they want to patronize the hotel in the future.

Depending on what I was there for, I might just spend a day just going in and out, making them run the security detail back and forth. Get a couple of buddies to join in.
"Except for on-duty law enforcement and special events with advance approval, Firearms are not allowed on property, including in vehicles. Knives with a blade length greater than 4 inches are also prohibited. Should a guest arrive on property with a weapon, it must be checked with Security on arrival." This goes for pretty much any Strip property.

They look through guests bags yet anyone off the street can walk right into the casino and do a “mass event”.. So guest harassment over a little locked pistol case with a guest who complied and clearly displayed their willingness to get the situation settled was a top priority rather than being on the casino floor ready to take action against folks who may cause actual harm. Ill never stay at their casino now.

Even in the thumbnail, that's three security guards who could be performing actual work in lieu of wasting time on a person with a low-power, low-capacity personal handgun and 30 total rounds of ammunition who is acting completely within the confines of the law.

This happened to me in January of this year when I made the mistake of staying there for my mini moon and had my firearm in a bag. My process was not quite as bad as yours but it was still a huge pain to lock it up and get it back. One guy was really rude about it. He basically told me I could stay somewhere else if I did not like it in a not so nice manner. I was pissed the whole time. I definitely will never stay at that hotel again. They are making the place less safe by doing this. Absolutely ridiculous.

@@Tannim98032 had to look it up. Best Western Plus Executive Court Inn & Conference Center in Manchester. It's not far from the Academy and it has a restaurant next door and pretty much anything you'd need in the area. Staff was very nice, rooms were spotless, it was quiet and reasonably priced. What more could you want?👍

I would edit that to the effect that keeping your firearm on your person would prevent any further stress. The firearm was the only thing to cause a fuss in this scenario. Had James simply had it on his person, he would never have known if his luggage he gave to the bellhop was even searched ✌️😎

I would have never turned a bag with my gun in it over to the bellboy in the first place. Also, I think it's very questionable that the hotel took it upon themselves to go through your bags without you present.

They scan ever bag that gets checked. They have 25 dogs on site, more then the city. They also scan and video each license plate and person who walks in. I toured the security facility

I get it, you want to start having fun, but how much time would it have taken to go up to the room, secure the firearm however you chose to, and then commence a night of debauchery? Or forego the alcohol and wear the friggin weapon.
After more than 25 years of carrying a weapon, I’ve chosen security, hundreds of times, over drinking in a public place. But that’s just me.

I stayed at the Venetian a couple years back and I wasn’t sure if I could carry in the casino or not so I Left my Glock in my bag. They searched my bag, called me, and I went through the exact same process you just did! Word for word. It has to be on purpose at this point since their procedure still sucks years later.

You have a reasonable expectation of privacy but them searching what you left in their care isn't covered.

If they are doing illegal search and seizures you can always ask them where the money you had in the bag is? When they say there was no money, demand a copy of the video from the search to verify it was not taken by them. That will shed some light on the procedure, motive, and attitude of the staff doing the search.

Yeah, I'm with you. If they detected the firearm in a scan the right move would be to call you down, since they were going to anyway, and have you open the bag to surrender the firearm to security. Having you have to march around the hotel was also bullshit. They're a service industry company, they'll bring a muffin all the way to your door at no charge, send security to the Front Desk to collect the weapon.
Step 1. go to a jewelry store and get some pictures of you wearing some major bling.
Step 2. Go to Vegas and hand your bag with a pistol in it to the bellhops.
Step 3. When they tell you they took your gun, claim your jewelry is missing. You have photo proof of you wearing the jewelry.

Sorry you had to go through this James. This is par for the course in Vegas. They tried this on me as well when I was checking in for SHOT a few years ago. I also stay at Venetian or Palazzo. One of the bellhops who opened the door to my cab asked "do you have any guns with you?" I just looked at him, smiled, walked past him and into the hotel. This is what happens when you give people "power" over other people. Everyone starts acting like the Stasi and wanting to get into each other's bizznas.

I had a similar experience in 2019 at the Flamingo Hotel. I travel with Pelican cases for my luggage and gear, regardless of if I am traveling with my firearms. I checked my bags because I was 3 hours too early to check in. When I went back to check in I was told I needed to see security for my bags. I was walked down to the basement where they informed me they needed to search my bags. When I asked why, they said because of the type of luggage they needed to make sure I didn't have any firearms in them, before they would give me back my property. I was only stopped because of the "tactical" look, and they stated "normal" luggage would not have been flagged. Also, not letting them hold my bags would also have no triggered anything. So, they have a garbage "policy" with garbage enforcement, coupled with theft and forced compliance under duress.
A garbage policy executed by underpaid , undertrained people who simpky tick boxes, and ask you for a business card as an ID.
This whole story is creepy, because if you get annoyed or voice your displeasure, they will throw the book at you or harass you.

The entire set up was also worryingly confused, with all that walking, rooms, guns everywhere.

It just proves customer service is dead. The Venetian like every other hotel and casino in Vegas feels you owe them. Customers are just marks to fleece. I have stayed in several different places there for conferences over the years. The difference between 30 years ago and today is shocking.
Only ever stayed at Excalibur, Flamingo, The Rio, Binion's and Vegas Club downtown, and the Las Vegas Hilton and a small place called Tuscany.

I think they were just doing him a favor, and removing the ability for him to have an accidental discharge, you know? while he's "crushing beers" and what not through out the night? I can't believe he basically admitted that if this hadn't happened he would have been drinking and concealed carrying. Also doesn't sound like it would have been out of the norm for him.
You describe 90% of all customer service in Vegas. You owe them for bring there. They are only nice to you so that you will spend your money and tip generously. It isn't hospitality there, it is solely business. It's been that way for decades now.
If those rules were not disclosed upfront then, in my opinion, there is clear reason to file a suit. I have great concerns about a hotel who will search a guest bags without notification of doing so.

So I’m a former bellhop but at a different casino. For sure after October 1 everyone was on edge about people staying there and what they were bringing up to their rooms. That has since died off now as it’s been long enough that some people have forgot. Even back then though our policy was if it’s in plain sight we tell security. If you conceal it I can’t say anything to you. Also if it was in an oddball box like a pelican case or something how am I to know if it’s a gun or camera gear or whatever. I only had to do it once cause the guest was acting like he was on drugs and I didn’t feel comfortable taking his stuff period, so our policy is call security. Security comes and only in front of the guest goes through their items. We wouldn’t be able to just free for all on anyones bag in our back storage room. Security had to be there and the guest who owned the items had to be there.
So the fact the Venetian has this rather loose and overboard policy in place is kind of dumb IMO. They make it more of a headache than it needs to be really

Searching through your bags when checking in is outrageous. I don't care what they are looking for, it is well understood that they are to secure your bags which would imply placing them somewhere that no one will touch them. As far as a no firearm policy that needs to be stated on the front door and when making the reservation. In Texas there is a legal placard that has to be placed at the entrance to warn you of their policy.
In Texas a hotel and the like cannot prohibit renters from having firearms in their rooms and the ingress/egress areas needed to get to/from your room with your firearms. They can only prohibit firearms in common areas.
As someone who lives in Vegas and concealed carries all the time, I can tell you that you definitely messed up by not just wearing it in. Almost all the casinos are "gun-free" places, and all the strip casinos are. But I've known several casino security guys and one club bouncer in town and they all basically say "just don't make it obvious, don't brandish it, we know people have concealed guns but we don't care as long as they don't make a scene". Most of our movie theaters and a lot of the best restaurants in town are in casinos, so I walk past "no weapons" signs while carrying a lot.

Nevada has a very particular culture around concealed carry. In both my initial concealed carry permit class and my renewal class, both instructors told the class the same thing. Everyone who carries concealed in this town ignores those signs.
I had nearly this exact same scenario happen to me in March of this year. It was a total clusterfuck. And I’m a Nevada resident with a Nevada CCW. The bellhops and concierge folks that were supposedly trying to get security for me that were running around before security arrived were totally freaked out that I not only had a gun, but that I wanted it back after they fuckin stole it from me. They treated me like I was screaming aloha snack bar in the fuckin lobby.
I was talking to the head guard escorting me because we had a 40 min walk all the fuckin way across Vegas basically explained he and most other guards hated this stupid policy, and then we talked about the irony of the security theater and that I could be carrying a concealed firearm, legally, being escorted by three guys who had radios lol. It’s such a joke, and is the last time I stay at The Venetian, and I’ve blown tens of thousands there.
My biggest issues were the same as yours. There was zero forewarning that this was even a thing, and it was such a nightmare to retrieve something that, incidentally since they don’t have FFL’s I’m pretty sure is completely illegal, that it makes it not worth it to stay there. The one bright light from security was the Sargent, I can’t remember his name, basically suggested I leave the hotel once I’d retrieved it, circle the block, and mind my own business for the duration of the stay.

@@Cp12345737 James answered this in a pinned post. That said, I checked with some local FFL’s and NGC folks I’m close to, and it’s a complete violation of Nevada law for them to do this. The problem is finding legislators or DA’s in Vegas who will take action against them because at the end of the day the law only matters if someone is willing to enforce it.
i live in Vegas and have a ccw, the law here states that private property owners ie the casino, can restrict people from carrying a concealed weapon, and it is a crime, gross misdemeanor. But on that same note they cannot restrict your ability to open carry only ask you to leave and if you don't you can be charged with trespass there are no weapons charges that can come of that. Nevada is kind of weird where you have the right to open carry in more places that you can concealed carry.
To be clear, NEVER give your bags to anyone... period.
This is a hotel. In Las Vegas. Where there was an infamous hotel shooting a few years ago. If you refuse to give your bag to the bellhop (to search it), they're going to assume that you have a gun in it. They're going to search your bag later (also without your consent). Either that or security will approach you directly and demand to search your bag under threat of trespass.

Years ago when u used to go to Vegas regularly I rented a storage unit to keep guns, ammo and anything else I didn’t want to bring.
Sounds like following the rule of staying strapped all the time would have saved you a ton of BS; I won't be stay at that hotel on my next trip regardless of whether they change their policy at this point. It really breaks my heart to see this. I just came back from my 1st Vegas trip yesterday, had a great time staying at the MGM. I did travel with my firearm and carried the entire time including when I toured the Venetian and it's shops, and I really really wanted to stay there the next time I visited Vegas. If searching people's bags and confiscating property is the norm then I'll happily go elsewhere.
NEVER let the bellhop take your bags. I learned my lesson in Mexico where they stole a few things out of my bag.

I would have found if there was other lodging available, and if there was anything else available I would have cancelled my reservation right then and there. I don't see how you're not more pissed they searched your bags. Granted, I always lock my bags, especially when there is a gun in them; I also don't use the bell hop, I have a suitcase and duffel bag with wheels, so it's easy enough to roll either of them with me.

Two major issues.
First they went through your property without your consent or your knowledge.
Second is this illusion of security all of the businesses constantly present to the public.
Doesn't seem like they went through his property as it seems like they x-ray the checked bags so that would have been when they discovered the gun. Notice the gun and case were still in the bag so I get the idea they never went through his bag.
That said I don't like the policy when people are allowed to walk through the casino carrying a gun. If they really are worried about guns in the building then they should force everyone to go through an x-ray machine and give people the option to check their weapon or leave. Not that it would do much to help convince customers to come back when they have to now go through a hotel version of TSA experience every time they enter the building.
Stayed in Caesar Palace and Planet Hollywood with my ccw. Before arriving at the hotel I called the 2 hotels customer service regarding their policy for checking in my ccw. The rep said “we dont checked in handgun and besides it’s yours you can keep it in your room”. Kudos to CP and PH, from that experience I always stayed with that hotels.
My wife and I are looking forward to our first vacation in ten years in vegas this winter and the Venetian/ Palazzo were on our short list of places to stay. This is now off the table and this is purely on principle as as a resident of the DPRNYC I am already deprived of my human rights. They have a right to say their house their rules and I respect that. I simply choose to take my money elsewhere.

After the shootings on Fremont street I think they are or have installed metal detectors.
I remember back in late 2020 I believe it was, going to Vegas when street crime exploded on the strip. A security guard at Bally’s checked my wife’s purse for weapons when we walked in. That was the first time I saw that and the only time. That hasn’t happened the last couple of trips to the strip.
I’m 45 years old, I remember going on hunting trips as a kid and walking into the hotels carrying my rifle all of us no issues. After September 11th they required use to check the rifles into security. It was the same process you had and a pain to deal with.
Honestly I've been on the fence about Mr. Reeves for a bit but the thoughtfulness of this video and him taking a devils advocate role, not giving into base frustrations has won me over. The fact that through a difficult situation where many would have gone apoplectic he remained calm and considerate means alot. Too many people stop reading the constitution at the 2nd amendment. But one of the moments I laughed at was sharing a toast with Kirsten Joy Weiss in impressive style at 0:54. 🍺🍷 It was fun seeing all the silly photos: drinking poses at parties, games at dinner, making faces at industry celebs, goofing off on escalators, disco balls in cars, scheming with Hop and the crew, sometimes trying to work. It was a little taste of the social atmosphere.
It's also nice that you brought your niece to a gondola ride and got remarried by Elvis. Plus I've seen in recent videos that you're kind to your momma. James Reeves, family man!
First off: Always go to the restroom and rearm immediately after retrieving your bags from baggage claim. (airports are sketchy places.) Secondly: find another hotel.
Bro... the simple fact that they went through your stuff is enough reason for me to never stay there again.
Even if you can get past the search of personal items , the fact that they do this and clearly do not have a process that is streamlined… at any time much less at a freaken gun show weekend is insane!!! I frequently stay at this property and I will NEVER EVER stay at this property again!
This is one of my favorite hotel and casinos. I nor my friends and family will ever stay here again if this policy is in place. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Be sure to send their corporate HQ a nice note indicating why you won't be doing business with them anymore, otherwise they won't get the point...

I don't know what to tell you. There are lots of hotels in Vegas that won't or can't enforce gun regulations after the 2017 shooting, none you'll be very comfortable with. Because we as a nation can't regulate gun ownership, Vegas had to step up or go broke. Maybe the next time there's reasonable gun regulation that will help to protect innocent people from mass shooters you think differently on it.

The government hires armed guards to protect people and property they care about like government buildings, national parks, the President etc. But they do not hire them for schools because?
Can you even give an example of reasonable in the context that each citizen has the right to self defense with a weapon in general use per the SC and the constitution. Each year 1.5 to 2.5 million people save themselves from bodily harm or death in the USA using their gun. You willing to see all those people suffer or die when all we really need is real security in schools or to allow people to carry in the "gun free zones" so there is more protection from criminals who take guns everywhere?
Never stay at a hotel which would so brazenly search your bags and hold your property hostage. Basically a government checkpoint.
I wouldnt feel safe known they will search my bags without me knowing it, or being present at the search. They could easily had planted something to try to nail you for it. If they wanted to search your bags, I think they should call you down so you are present. You know. Like they doing at customs in an airport or something like that. Beside they could had planted something, they could also had stolen something from you

That's not how this works. Just because you're in your house, doesn't mean you can illegally transfer a firearm from one party to another and it suddenly becomes legal. It is straight-up illegal for them to take possession of your firearm unless they have an FFL, and they don't.
@@stupidanon5941 I assume that's as legal as any other private party transfer. You don't need an FFL to do that.
This is also why I park my own car and handle my own bags. You can't trust those people.

Except that he consented to the searches when he agreed to the Hotel’s terms and conditions of occupancy. Go to their website. Save yourself the time and embarrassment of saying such stupid things on a public forum.

I live an hour outside of Vegas but I work and often go to events in Vegas and I can tell you that what the casinos don't know doesn't hurt them. They all post signs banning firearms from their property, but they also know that so many people carry concealed here that they usually take the approach of as long as we don't see it or know about it, it's cool. I know several people that work in security or concierge at multiple casinos and they all say the same thing. Next time, mount your weapon outside the airport and carry on...
I was a security officer for most of my working career and I am now retired what I see here is a hotel which does not clearly State the exact procedure you need to do to bring your weapon into their hotel during Shot Show. Considering the size of the event what they should have done is put on their website a information page which states exactly what the hotel wants you to do, so you can safely bring your legally licensed weapon into the hotel with as little difficulty as possible. And I can also see the other side of it as well Hotel Security Management all across the strip after the shooting incident a few years ago ended up being left on edge., and a lot of the current policies were written by the hotel chain lawyers in order to minimize liability. Believe me when I say the actual Security Management and operational Hotel security staff were never consulted when it became time to develop and implement those policies now in place. They have been placed between a rock and a hard place.
If the hotel's policy (or any corporate policy) "makes sense" to begin with, they can't then choose whomever they want to harass. This is 100% a case of a know "gun celebrity" getting harassed. These hotels have FACIAL RECOGNITION cameras, there's there's 0% chance they didn't know exactly who they were harassing.
They had no right to search or seize a fkn thing.
We went for my wife's 30th birthday. Not to this hotel but, we opted to not have room cleaning. Two days later, we were smoking pot in the room and I hear a knock. I look out the peephole and there was a lady with a pantsuit and a security guy. We got a smoking room just so we wouldn't have to worry but, paranoia set in. I answered the door anyway and they told me that because I didn't get room cleaning that they have to come do a wellness check. Freaked me out. 🤣🤣🤣
Any security guards trying to enforce rules that are not clearly posted and, in this case, are violating federal law, should be physically subdued by any means necessary as a threat to society at large. Thugs for hire are the lowest form of human being and deserve suitable treatment.
@@blade420playElite , Excuse games that they play. I always hang the "do not disturb tag". Even when I leave the room for any reason. I simply don't want anyone in my room while I'm there. I trust no one, and I'm not needy or high maintenance. They can have their room back once I'm done paying for it.
I live in Vegas and your experience is insane. If I were you I'd never say at that hotel again. I've worked for some of the shows in the conversion center and it is a very long walk there and back. Usually, at the shows, there are at least 20 police officers there so I've never carried my gun and the company I worked for would have freaked out even though I have a Nevada concealed weapon permit.
PS: Las Vegas is a Liberal City. When I moved there 15 years ago you had to register ALL your weapons with the police department. They would issue you a card that you HAD to carry with you when you carried that gun. If you didn't have the card OR got the wrong card for a different gun they would confiscate your gun. Also, if you ever went into North Las Vegas all the laws there are different. Once you arrived in N. Las Vegas you are not a criminal. Insane place. Liberals ruin everywhere they live. Including Las Vegas.
They don't have blue cards anymore, that ended in like 2009. You can carry whatever you want open carry over 21yrs old. And conceal any loaded pistol you want with a nevada ccw or ccw from a recognized state.
@@tckpsa I definitely don’t miss having to have those stupid blue cards. I’m a pitboss on the strip & ive never heard of our security searching anyone’s bag without them being present, or even being present. It is policy that ppl can’t carry in our hotel/casino, and I’ve seen people doing it & of course security shows up & does whatever they do. And during shot show we have tons of people there playing that are here for it & they ask me if they can carry. My response is always simple, as long as it’s not seen it’s not there as far as I’m concerned. If I know you’re carrying but it’s canceled I’m not stopping you from doing it.
