Galveston always moistens my eyes. The imagery of a man off at war worried about whether his lovely woman will still be there when (and if) he comes home, well, I can feel it.

1967 was when kids were getting drafted out of high school to go to Vietnam. The hippie movement was starting. People were hitchhiking across the country and around the world. Things were changing. ..
Good comment Elizabeth. Wanted to note the generational change happening at that point in our history. Birth control pills and changing attitudes toward sex outside of marriage combined to profoundly alter young relationships. My parents’ marriage ended in 1970 precisely for that reason.

Glen was an amazing guitarist; one of the Wrecking Crew (studio musicians in LA in the 60's and 70's). He and Jimmy Webb were one of those great parings of singer and songwriter. To see him really tear it up on guitar, check out William Tell Overture, and I know there's a duet with Roy Clark. Vocally, there are versions of him singing Amazing Grace that show off his tenor range. Other greats are Wichita Lineman and By the Time I Get to Phoenix. I'm Not Going to Miss You was one of his last, as he was in declining health with Alzheimer's.
Glen was an extremely talented musician. Gavelston - Wichita Lineman - Rhinestone Cowboy are musts. And his version of Bonaparte’s Retreat shows of his talent as a musician as he played multiple instruments, including the Bagpipes.
Campbell was a great session musician back before he became a bonified star. Much like many members of the band, the Eagles and Toto. Session musicians are held in high regard in the music business.
Galveston is probably my favorite Glenn Campbell song, but you should also check out the Glenn Campbell and Roy Clark instrumental version of Ghost Riders in the Sky. It really showcases just how good both of them played.

nah, it's not dead... there are loads of good musicians around today. Lianne la havas, Laura Marling etc...... Mark Speer the guitarist in Khruangbin has breathed new life into guitar music. have faith.
He was a friend of John Hartford the original writer of this song. The John Hartford recording was the first version I remember. Glen Campbell heard his version and produced his own version. You will find the John Hartford presentation very personal and introspective.

By Time I get to Phoenix, Wichita Lineman. Glen was very good and one of the best to play the guitar. Many rock stars of the time would consult or ask him to play on their albums. Alice Cooper considered him to be one of the top 5 guitar players in the music industry.
John Hartford wrote this. The studio version is great.
One of my favorite tracks from the very first album I ever owned, along with By the Time I Get to Phoenix, The Dreams of the Everyday Housewife, Galveston, Wichita Lineman. BTW in my mind the 60's was anything but conservative. Arguably the most transformational decade of the post war years.
I grew up in that era. There were a lot of country songs about riding the rails, hobos and the rambling life in general.

The songwriter of this song, John Hartford, was such a fabulous musician & songwriter. My family used to love to see him live when he'd come to Chicago area back in the day. I was so sorry he left us in June of 2001. In regards to Glen Campbell, yes, "Wichita Lineman" is definitely the next one you should listen to. Glen Campbell had quite a few "cross-over" hits & he was on a lot of different music charts during his earlier music career.

Glen never got the recognition he deserved. He was an all around musician. He could fill in the white noise beautifully. He felt n heard it. He was a gem. Play anything by him. It's all good. Rhinestone cowboy, lineman , all his hits r bomb.

I grew up listening to Glen Campbell not realizing how good he really was I playing the guitar I know you love Roy Clark he doesn’t play the same way Roy does but he can play it behind his head I saw him in concert in the early 2000s When he first started getting sick and I’m so grateful that I got to see him live and he was awesome I didn’t realize how talented he really was and I don’t know if he’s passed or not but he was a wonderful wonderful man and a beautiful voice
Probably my all time favorite song... and I'm a person who listens to and likes all kinds of music. They don't write 'em like that anymore... unfortunately. Glen is considered one of the greatest guitar virtuosos of all time. He was in high demand as a session player and played on many famous albums including The Beach Boys. Glen and Alice Cooper were neighbors and close friends and played golf together all the time. Alice is one of the first who knew something was wrong with Glen because the spend so much time together. Most consider Glen a country artist... and he was, but he was much more than that. He was a true musician. He played country and rock and pop and anything else he wanted to. Suggestions... By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Dreams Of An Everyday Housewife, Galveston, Try A Little Kindness, Rhinestone Cowboy and of course Wichita Lineman.... which was the most played song on the radio that year. Also listen to "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" and understand he was dying of Alzheimer's when he wrote and recorded it.
Oh yeah... the wasn't the full version of Gentle On My Mind. It has 4 verses and that had 3, edited for tv time. It also combined words from the 3rd and 4th verse in the last verse there.
9 times out of 10 Glen gave credit to the amazing songwriter, John Hartford, when doing this live. Glen sure could pick the tunes. Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman" and "Galveston", along with "Gentle On My Mind" cemented Glen's place in music history very early on in his solo career.

Glenn's technical ability on guitar is top tier. Like the best just about
1967 was called "The Summer of Love." It was the beginnings of the Hippie free love generation, and it followed on the heels of the Jack Kerouac "On the Road" novel. Also, Woody Guthrie died that year. He was one of the pioneers of the roaming, rambling folk music movement. "Gentle on My Mind" is very much a product of its time and place.
He was a member of the legendary Wrecking Crew, a group of session musicians that played on a massive amount of hit songs.
Glen cut this song in 1967. This version was on the TV Show 'Hee Haw' in the late 70s or early 80s before the show was finally canceled. By the way; according to Rocker Alice Cooper (who was a close friend to Glen) Eddie Vanhalen asked Cooper if he would introduce him to Glen for some guitar pointers! Look up Alice Cooper interview/Glen Campbell on utube. It was done the morning Glen passed away.

Glen kills this and makes it his own but the original was written and performed by John Hartford. Many traces of the original composition are left behind in Glen's great cover.

Glenn’s version of Galveston live should be next. He was an amazing guitarist. I really love John Hartford’s version of Gentle on My Mind, because it seemed more believable. I could picture Hartford on the road, a hobo eating soup in a train yard, and having a non-committal relationship with someone he still loved. Glenn almost seemed too wholesome for this song. His skills as a guitarist cannot be denied, though. He was magnificent.
This is probably my favorite Glen Campbell song, I know that he wasn't the original person to do this song but the way he does it is just so good. I love the descriptive lyricism and just the way he sings it!

Introduced by Roy Clark! Roy Clark and Glenn Campbell has done a lot of guitar playing together, they even play the same guitar at the same time. Both world class guitar players.

I remember when this song came out. I thought that it was wonderful and I was really surprised when I found out that he was from Arkansas like me.
60's and 70's there was this "free" thinking about being tied down to anything, relationships, jobs, places. It was right up there with hitchhiking etc.. Worked for some people, not many, really.

Glenn Campbell was a studio musician before his solo career, playing on many hit recordings as part of the studio ensemble The Wrecking Crew. Among others they played
the backing for The Beach Boys' rock's milestone album "Pet Sounds", the group doing the vocal parts. Campbell joined the Beach Boys but left it as his solo career started really to take off. Lot more conservative than now, well what with the clock going backwards with purist attitudes and looking at the laws that have been set and suggested, not so sure.
Campbell fired some ultraconservative opinions back then around the Vietnam war, but did an anti war song "Galveston".
As far as I’m concerned, you just heard his best. There is more Glen Campbell worth exploring, of course. I really enjoyed and appreciated your reaction. For me, this is on my Top 10 for something I describe to my adult kids as my “Americana List,” songs that are etched in our national memory that depict some aspect of life in the USA. I believe you are right to some extent about the song pushing the limits but I think he (the author John Hartford) does so daringly, but reigns it in in the last verse. It seems to me he expresses these ideas through the main character’s rather bold and crass (for the times) memories of this relationship, then reveals himself to be delusional, living with the other railroad hobos, making the rest an invention of his memory - still gets his positions out there, but a hallucination is not quite as strong as a declaration.
I would enjoy the song just as much if Glen Campbell himself had told me I was full of shit. It is an extremely complex set of lyrics. When you add it to your playlsit and have heard it 30 times I believe you will have trouble recalling the lyrics in eal time just as I do after hearing it hundreds of times. My wife and I were fortunate to have great seats at one of his concerts many years ago. He was an outstanding entertainer and storyteller, even if the stories were not all his.
