This is the Hyundai INSTER - which definitely seems to have been named to try and attract the Gen Z car buyers. Only nobody told them that, if that’s the case, they should have called it the TikTok or the SnapChat because only old people like the electrifying.com team use Instagram, these days!
Anyway, the new Hyundai INSTER is based on Hyundai’s existing small city car - the Casper. The Casper is currently only sold in Korea (in my opinion, Casper would have been a better name to stick with!), which is also where it’s built as part of a joint venture with one of the local manufacturers. And that’s what allows Hyundai to reduce costs.
Speaking of which, Hyundai hasn’t confirmed pricing, yet, but the INSTER is expected to cost from around £22,000 - a similar amount to its arch nemesis, the Citroen e-C3.
It's not going to be fast, mind… The 95bhp, 42kWh INSTER will take 11.7sec to get to 62mph. The bigger 49kWh car gets a whopping 113bhp, for a slightly less embarrassing 0-62mph time of 10.6 seconds.
Thanks to a long(ish) 2.58m wheelbase means that the INSTER has pretty good space in those back seats, and you can even add an optional setup that allows the seats to slide and recline, so that you can prioritise more boot space or legroom. If you do add that option, though, you can only seat two people in the rear seats - rather than the three that you can squeeze in if you stick with the standard seats. As with the front seats, the rear seats also fold flat, but they only seat two people.
Join Ginny as she takes a close look around the new INSTER. Is this going to a winner when it arrives in the UK? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

I don't know about the target demographic but I think this will be a hit across all age groups. It looks cool, has really thoughtful design touches and really well integrated tech. Small, light and more affordable, this is a great example of what EVs should be - fantastic job by Hyundai.

I just fell in love with the inster, and it's not limmerence. Never mind the demographic audience for this vehicle, hyundai just ticked almost all the boxes of my wishlist what I need an compact EV to be to have value. I think this EV has appeal for all dempraphocs. Hyundai just blew the competition away in my view with other brands in this segment based on specs and features, as standard, interior en exterior, alone. If the 49 kwh can achieve all weather all season range of 186 miles between 20 and 80% soc I'm sold! Hoping the 49 kwh version will be well below 25000 euros incl taxes. If so it is true value for money than the competition. The eC3 basically only has the comfort suspension going for it, the fiat 500e has only the iconic design going for it for a hefty comparative price, the compact byd maybe has more style a slightly more interior stle but far less fully specced than the inster, the id2all may be a close competitor but will likely have a heftiger pricetag and slightlynless features, maybe only competing on slightly better performance specs, the honda ev has better front interior design for a hefty price butbwoth much less range and size, the Dacia is too basic for the price and performance and looks relatively expensive for the price, renault 5 looks lackluster in terms of total package compared to the Inster EV, but you're paying mainly for design and modern nostalgia (which will likely be more niche now in my view

This is so cool. It's going to sell so well in the UK. They've finally realised cheap electric cars don't need to be boring and that interior especially looks nicer than anything under £30K. Glad to see it also has all of the tech you expect from a more expensive car, including the heat pump as standard, it's going to be a much better proposition than the E-C3 and the new Fiat Panda. I don't think anything is going to come close for the money. I'd even choose this over the BYD Dolphin etc.

Looks like a brilliantly practical little car and also not skimped on the equipment either which is great! I know lots of people who have stepped up to a segment above what they want/need only because the equipment they want isn't available in the smaller car. @Jrfeimst2 День тому

@@Noah_E LOL. All of those models cost more than 40 grand. Most people in the US can’t or should not buy a car over 40 grand. You’re crazy if you think any of those cars are an affordable EV. We need an EV that’s less than 25 grand. And even then that’s still a lot of money for most people.

None of them was under $40k and my trucks were more than double that. New cars under $25k cars are almost extinct, regardless of power-train, and if they were available you'd probably be better served by a quality used car than a bare bones cheaply made new one. That's post COVID induced inflation reality.

It amazes me that so many motoring journos fail to realise that "City Cars" can be just as useful as any other car, especially when so much of the internal volume is not taken up with engine and transmission.
Don't get me wrong, I love large and high performance vehicles but the reality is that we rarely use the performance or the space. So wtf do we need electric cars to follow the form factors of ICE cars? If you can get 6'6" and a 6'2" people one behind the other, why do we need a car to be any bigger?
I regularly spend long hours on motorways and, with the exception of the holidays, I rarely see more than 20% of cars with more than two people in them, yet everybody seems to think that they need to "Impress" the population with some sort of floating gin palace on wheels!
And the reality is that it is perfectly possible to use a "City Car" for all a family's needs. I know, we had a Hyundai Atoz as our only family car for about 3 years. It already had over 250k on the clock when we got it and did another 350k before it finally died. And a lot of that mileage was on m/ways. At least with an equivalent EV we wouldn't have the engine singing along with every mile (we actually called it The Singer because the engine sounded more like a sewing machine than a car). With adaptive cruise control and all the other typical gear of modern cars, I really don't see the need for anything more.
Do I want one? Yes (and this is the first one of these ultra cheap, FWD EVs that has tempted me) but I don't know whether I can live without the flexibility that a van offers, but that is another story, and one that is completely irrelevant to 90+% of people..
Maybe we can get one of these and a cheap van for when those specific needs arise.

I love your comment...only one reason for a much bigger ioniq 5....
Anyone who regularly pulls a trailer cannot do that with this car...I do not expect this car / battery size capable of pulling 1600 kg...which more or less is the weight of a 2 person glider including trailer...or a one horse trailer.
I call this a perfect second car.

@@reiniernn9071 The fact is that there are plenty of medium sized vehicles that can't tow that much. I also need to tow quite regularly (and it's one of the things that annoys me about BYD in Euroland; the company just doesn't have their models homologated for towing... GRRRR). In my case, it's to lug loads of firewood.

Slow cars are the future. We used to have slow, and now we have more and lower limits so slow is better, especially for 20 mph cities. Nice and square and tonnes of room, which is such a treat, but trying to be cutesie, but not really got it. Those seats are so thick! Given it is a city car, surely the seats could be like train seats, really slim, lighter and leaving more room in the cabin. Very spoilable, markable, spillable fabric seats, should last 5 mins with the grandkids. Flat floor- perfect! Why not door garnishes for the outside to protect the doors from car park dings? Shorter people are going to have fun looking over that centre screen. No wireless Carplay? Not good! Love Hyundai/Kia they are the future. Wish them luck. Good vid, Ginny.

Love this car. Love the movable rear seats and the fact that they fold flat. Love the interior design. Great that it gets a heat pup as standard. Love the fact that's not just another clone SUV. This isn't just for gen Z - I'm definitely not in that bracket and love it. If this does come in starting at £22k a lot of other manufacturers are going to have to rethink their pricing. Just a slightly bigger boot (when carrying passengers) and range (at least 250m) and it'd be perfect 🙂 If I hadn't just ordered the dolphin (to replace my iD3) the Inster would definitely have been high up on my shortlist.

OMG, this is the perfect car! It's doing the sliding rear sits just like my 16yo Toyota Yaris, and has plenty of pockets and storage spaces, almost half of my 16yo Toyota Yaris, and it costs just over 10 times what I paid for my Toyota Yaris (with delivery to a shop and new clutch kit + fluids, breaks, etc.) 7 years ago (~£2000).
And it's a great urban runabout with almost 1/3 of the range of my 16yo Toyota Yaris.
And you can fold the rear seats flat and fit a matress then go camping in the parking lot at ASDA, so you can charge it and go back home the next day. BRILLIANT.
I'm 10 fold greener that any EV driver by keeping my old Toyota yaris, which is about £200 a year with 2 oil changes and 1 planned part to renew (aftermarket ones, on the cheap side), and it still does the same milege to the gallon as advertised (if I drive sensibly, not economical).
I drove this car on mountain paths where an Audi Q7 got stranded, but my little Betty didn't break a sweat. Drove it through mud uphill in 1st gear bouncing off the rev limiter for minutes, and she got me out of the woods on the rocky path on the first try. She had chunks of mud on top of it but didn't let me down.
Had the water pump fail at 155K miles, and she went all the way to the parking clunking and grinding, where she finally gave up and spilled the antifreeze. She didn't left me stranded on the side of the road. I love this car and will never give it up until the end, and that's far from now. To be honest I knew the water pump was on its last legs 4-5 months before it failed.
I drove Betty thousands of miles throughout Europe and only had good times.
I bought it as a cheap runaround, and hated the looks, but it grew on me, and found so many features that I didn't know about as the time went.
If you have a mk2 Yaris, did you know the rear seatbelts have child lock mode? or the rear doors have a little switch just under the latch that locks the door and it will open only from outside? and 9 airbags? imagine that...

I think this might actually be useful to a lot of people and I could see it being used by an old Italian farmer somewhere. Big kudos on the physical buttons for the heater and aircon.

Yep, we like the style a lot. It has some pros over the Citroën ë-C3 line.
Mostly the flat cargo floor, the choice for 2 sizes of batteries that also come with a heatpump, the option for a open/glas roof and 1 pedal driving.
    The rest is design preferences.
The pros for the ë-C3 seem to be the better comfort, the better suspension, more interior space and the fact that it is build in the EU could be an argument.
Claimed range for the ë-C3 is 199 miles or 326km for the standard version of the 44kWh ë-C3, NOT the 165 miles that you claim.
The standard version of the Hyundai Inter is 185 miles (300km) and for the 49kWh it is 217 miles according to the website of Hyundai itself.
AND, the Citroën ëC3 is for sale, and the Inster is due for mid to late 2025? and the exact prices have yet to be revealed in the EU.

It looks an interesting option in thst £20k+ space, the harder trick will be makers doing the lower price cars to match the cheaper IC cars on the market, I like the seat sliding and front folding seats I can take or leave the beige interior scheme should sell ok until something cheaper and better value comes along.

I think the USA will try to add tariffs to Korean imports next. I question the logic of two battery sizes when the difference between them is less than 17%. But from a battery resources point of view it definitely makes sense to give these options. We need to bring down the emissions of EV production by simplifying them, making them lighter, and keeping the battery sizes smaller. But there is a risk that by making EVs cheap (affordable), you also make them less likely to be maintained as long. The cheapest cars are relegated to scrap the quickest, because a major repair can make them cost ineffective to repair. I know that sound like a bad reason to keep car prices high, but sustainability requires us to build cars that last for very long time. Instead of seeking inexpensively produced cars people can afford, it might be better in the long run to build cars to last longer and be more easily repaired/maintained with interchangeable parts.
We're trying to address a Climate Crisis through consumerism, and consumerism has never solved any real problems. Historically, it just creates new ones.

The petrol Kia Ceed SW (estate) starts at £23k new ... I have a 2016 model, it has been a brilliant load lugger, as I only do about 3,000 miles a year I'm afraid switching to an EV of this size won't save enough to pay for hiring a larger car for camping holidays, trips to the tip etc. As a lifestyle second car it will probably hit the spot.

The cheapest (£22k?) smaller battery R5EV will be out in 18 months! They are starting with the more expensive higher performance versions (around £30k). Perhaps these are more profitable while the design is fresh and then it will become mass market next year.

    • @mikadavies660
      @mikadavies660 2 дні тому

@dougbamford Thank you but anyone with any interest knows this.... It does matter what is promised for 18mths time... Now is what matters when people are looking for an affordable EV ..... NOW.
I actually like Renault, their designs are spot on at the moment. Their Scenic EV is respectable value for money. But their R5EV just missed the mark. Maybe you forgot that we have already been waiting 2 years for its release. It will make a good cheap second hand EV, but new it's as much of a rip-off as the stupidly prices Fiat 500E

    • @dougbamford
      @dougbamford 2 дні тому

@@mikadavies660 yes the delays on getting cheaper EVs have been VERY frustrating. But car companies have to make a profit, so unless governments change the equation they will prioritise the higher profit models first. I thought the R5 had been developed relatively quickly for a new EV and was probably a response to the upcoming French subsidy regime for cheaper EVs. That has focused Renault and Citroen.

its all about the figures, you can live with most EVs if they have at least 200 miles of range a heat pump and 4 or 5 seats for under £20k, move past that price and there's masses of other EV's. So saying the more the merrier.
