I have been a super steel snob for over a decade but have been finding myself appreciating "lesser" steels a lot more lately. One major benefit is the lack of loss/damage anxiety. Love me some VG10! Also a breeze to sharpen :)
Hope your FIL heals up quickly and regains as much function as possible.

Aw thanks so much man. PS me too! I am returning to the simple pleasure of worry-free steel that sharpens beautifully!

Good to hear from you Gabe! But sad to hear about your FiL's injury. I am sure your presence is a massive help on the farm. Sometimes, we have to deal with unexpected twists and turns in life.

Man, I definitely would want something longer than an SRK on the blackberry canes in my backyard. The thorns are nasty!
An added benefit to 8Cr13MoV is since it's less expensive, it makes a great medium for experiments in knife modification.

Yeah, 8cr is fine if it's well treated. Enough carbon to get 60-61 hrc, enough chromium to be fairly stainless, well balanced for the level of toughness required in a small knife. It's basically a slightly hypereutectic Sandvik steel with a bit more carbide and a bit less toughness.

Yeah guys true - I am coming around. I am more representing the fact in this video that me (and heaps of other people) were fed a lot of misinformation in the 2000's and believed it due mainly to lack of knowledge/testing at that time, poor sharpening, and lack of good heat treatment!

@@homeslicesharpening Much like 440c and 420HC. Its good when done well, and used in the right knife for the task at hand with the right geometry for it. They get horrible reputation when they have lots of retained austenite and are soft. 8cr is basically a 440B sort of steel.

Are you from new Zealand? You have a very american accent.

Nah man, I am from Washington State in the USA. I have just lived in NZ for the last 7 years. What about you?

@@homeslicesharpening I've lived in the midwest all my life. I wish I could live in NZ, dreamt about it for years, but I come from a very poor family in an area that has little opportunity for people without college education. Anyway, the reason I was asking is 1, because of your accent, and 2, I noticed you carry while on your property. I was just surprised to see that firearm ownership was legal there. I figured the laws were similar to Australia.

@@homeslicesharpening Oh yeah, I ordered a mora companion the other day and saw that moraknivs stainless knives in the companion and craftline series use 12c27n steel like that petrified fish knife you've been having trouble with if a cheap point of comparison would somehow help. When it gets here in a week or so I could also give you my own results after I put my own edge on it. I'll be using my typical grit progression of 400-600-1000 dmt to a .5 micron to .1 micron strop. (I get pretty good results on that.)

Awesome! I'd love to hear your thoughts on 12C27 - comment them into a more current video and I won't lose track of them (UA-cam filters out comments I have answered unless I go back and manually find them as I am now!)
The video is shot in Washington State (explained in the video, but I get it man - I always skip around the videos I watch) because I returned home to help my father in law to run his large farm in the US for 3 months. He was injured and lost a finger.

Good vid. Love when people can ditch the pretention and steel snobbery and just talk practical knife use backed by real experience. Few quick thoughts/info tidbits:
    • check midway USA and Chicago knife works websites for sales while you're stateside. Midway tends to have the best sales on Cold Steel, SOG, and Buck. CKW is usually just lowest prices I see in general. I got my SRK-C for $23 on a midway sale.
    • the SRK C is a great knife, but the one problem I have with it that keeps it from being a real user for me is that the handle is very thin. For those of us with hands in an XL glove or larger, it's just tough to get a good grip without bearing down and getting fatigued. I have plans to strip and convex mine and it'll live in my trunk in a breakdown kit.
    • not sure about availability for that specific model, but leathermans and other multitools have sheaths with pockets for bit kits. There are leatherworkers out there that can make you one, too. Pretty handy and space saving.
    • my first experience with magnacut was with an early 60 hrc heat treat protocol and I definitely had a wire burr and not too impressive performance. De-burred on a ceramic rod and it fixed a lot of the problem, but was still not too impressive. So much more than just steel type matters to the user experience. Part of why I hate steel snobbery. Even "budget" steels are fantastic in the right geometry and HT and well more than most people need in their daily if we were all honest with ourselves. Spyderco has had the best 8cr I've tried to date. Grab a Tenacious if you find a sale.
Sorry to hear about your FIL. Hope he has a speedy recovery!
