    I watched this again. So would you choose 1095 or d2 in an outdoor knife. Seems to be more and more cheap outdoor knives being made in d2.

    • @homeslicesharpening
      @homeslicesharpening 9 годин тому

      Between the two I'd choose... 14C28N 🤣 oh, sorry I had to say it. On a serious answer, I would do 1095 over D2, and I would do well-hardened 1075 or 1084 or any near-1095-variant (1095 CroVan, SK5, 80CrV2, 52100, CarbonV) over plain 1095 as less carbon or alloyed variants help address the weakness that can be introduced in regular 1095 by plate martensite.

    Iron sharpens iron apparently. If you were carrying an axe, would sharpening a knife on an axe give you a better result than a rock?

    • @homeslicesharpening
      @homeslicesharpening 9 годин тому

      Haha - yep, so says the book of Proverbs. I'm sure the Axe would help with deburring, Todd Simpson did an article on scienceofsharp.com where he found that steeling on a kitchen steel actually does remove some metal from the apex. The hard part about the axe would be that you'd likely be trying to sharpen something 56-mid 60's HRC hardness with an axe (usually more like 45-55 HRC except for the cutting edge being harder sometimes). So it could realign and remove damaged steel, but would not be hard or abrasive enough to reshape the edge.

      You are welcome sir! Lower BESS can be super frustrating at first. It defies all feeling of edge aggression (and indeed sometimes you can get a lower BESS and lose some edge aggression). I hope your strop works well! I have found lately that Mother's Mag polish on flat denim drops the BESS on softer steels, and harder steels respond well to 1 micron diamond or similar on hard leather or basswood. The rough side of a hanging unloaded leather strop almost always drops 10-30 g off a BESS number for me as well. Usually to get under 100 g - I have to 1) Spend my time minimizing burr on the stones and take the edge to a fine grit 2) Strop on Mother's Mag or UF diamond emulsion, 15-20 strokes. 3) Strop on hanging leather, 15-20 more strokes. Best of luck!

    Got the sandrin monza today, shaving out of the box, cloudy mirror edge, definitely a higher polish than any other factory edge ive seen, polished but still very agressive, more agressive than a steel edge at this level of polish, it wont whittle my head hair (i have super super fine hair) but it will whittle my beard hair which is fairly coarse. Definitely a nice factory edge

Those saber ground, thick knives are extremely hard to push, requiring 5x more force in some of my testing. • @homeslicesharpening
      @homeslicesharpening 4 дні тому

      Hello again. I think you could get a dual grit edge on a DC4, but it would just take you trying it to see if it's worth it. I find that some stones leave an apex extension that is too fragile to help with edge retention, while others yield a robust and aggressive dual grit edge. If I were you, I would just give it a try! I do find my best results presently are on Coarse Diamond, Fine Water-stone, and lightly stropped after. Cheers.

    No. Magna cut doesn't have better retention. Your straight wrong

    • @homeslicesharpening
      @homeslicesharpening 15 днів тому

      Oh hello. I may not have communicated clearly in this video - but I am not making the claim that MagnaCut has better edge holding overall than CPM 10V. From a CATRA (and real-world) standpoint, that is not true, the overwhelming amount of Vanadium in 10V leads to a much more enduring working edge (I cannot speak to fine edge because I have not done testing on it in these steels yet). The result of the test shows that in this (highly variable) test of plunging through a used ship rope filled with sand, coarse sharpened 10V and coarse sharpened MagnaCut experienced a similar dulling pattern. That's just the result of this particular test, and it is admittedly a very limited test, mainly undertaken for my own curiosity. When I mention a very low BESS reading for MagnaCut, I am referring to a test of an edge achieved by a different method of sharpening - that almost always leads to a completely different result. Maybe I did not make it clear in the video but I do not currently see this test as proving anything conclusive about which steel holds a better edge in real life. I have not yet done a test of 10V with the style of sharpening that helped MagnaCut excel - so I cannot compare directly - but I hope to do another test on it after spending some time optimizing a sharpening protocol for super hard CPM10V. All the best.

    Thank you, thank you,, this is the very best video on steel composition, that I've ever seen,, I have a CRK Inkosi on order, and I'm so, so, glad it comes in Magnacut,,, thank you again, I'll be watching this video over and over again,, all the very best, from England,, 🇬🇧,, ps, I live around an hours drive from Sheffield, where the very first stainless steels were developed,,

    Hi all Sharp steel is a wonderful puzzle - the dynamic interactive causality makes for a vast number of problems, each with their own various optimizations. Knowledge comes before and informs action and a lifetime of investigation is often involved in a major step or two of progress, which can take a generation or two before it becomes known. e.g. Cliff Stamp's method of sharpening "without" (i.e. minimally) forming a burr: One version of it has 3 steps - 1. Cut weakened metal from the edge using suitable stone/hone etc. 2. Shape the edge profile you want e.g. 6-10 deg per side, stopping when naked eye can no longer see light reflect off the edge. (10-20 microns) then 3. Micro bevel a fresh strong apex e.g. 12-15 deg Cliff passed some years ago but his YT channel still has over 300 vids and he shared plenty in his comments. Cliff considered forming a burr as part of making a fresh apex an inferior and unnecessary step - and stropping generally unnecessary. It could be that the next generation best practice will involve a mixture of Cliff's no burr and much less stressed apex steel and for some applications ... dual grit apexes. (1985 The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening set a world championship axe angle to 10 dps and their sports show razor was 6 dps ... you might want to rethink 17 dps. It's possible some of the expensive powder metallurgy steels have stability problems at lower angles, thus for some tasks they are not just unnecessary but are outperformed by ingot tech steels that are much cheaper???) Thanks for sharing and going through a re-think. I wish you all the best in just what you are doing, why, who it will benefit, how and getting valid testing really set up. It's not really worth doing testing that isn't going to show relevant valid results. sincerely d

      Thanks for the comment David, and the gracious way you delivered it. I appreciate the summary of Cliff's work, it is difficult to get a grasp on his work as a whole if you didn't go through watching his videos sequentially or ride along for the journey as they came out. I have found the various perspectives of Todd Simpson, Cliff Stamp, Vadim Kraichuk, Larrin Thomas, and many other sharpeners to be fascinating even though at times they can contradict each other outright. My research has been a fun process for me, and is thus presently worth doing from my perspective. Among many privileges is the opportunity to have conversations like this and fit in another piece of the puzzle. All the best, my friend.

    I just went crabbing with a buddy of mine off of the coast of Oregon. Unfortunately we lost the very first crab pot that we tossed in due to old rope. So we decided to replace all of the harnesses before giving another crab trap to the bottom of the ocean. First I pulled out my Spyderco PM2. It didn’t go as well as I thought it would. So I grabbed my SOG Seal Pup and used the serrated part of the blade. HOLY SMOKES! Like a hot knife through butter. I decided right then and there that I needed a fully serrated knife for my new found salt water endeavors. Hence…why I’m here. 😂 I can attest to the fact that a serrated knife has a very specific purpose and that it excels at it. Thanks for the education and thank you Spyderco.

      @@homeslicesharpening I've lived in the midwest all my life. I wish I could live in NZ, dreamt about it for years, but I come from a very poor family in an area that has little opportunity for people without college education. Anyway, the reason I was asking is 1, because of your accent, and 2, I noticed you carry while on your property. I was just surprised to see that firearm ownership was legal there. I figured the laws were similar to Australia.

      @@homeslicesharpening Oh yeah, I ordered a mora companion the other day and saw that moraknivs stainless knives in the companion and craftline series use 12c27n steel like that petrified fish knife you've been having trouble with if a cheap point of comparison would somehow help. When it gets here in a week or so I could also give you my own results after I put my own edge on it. I'll be using my typical grit progression of 400-600-1000 dmt to a .5 micron to .1 micron strop. (I get pretty good results on that.)

      Awesome! I'd love to hear your thoughts on 12C27 - comment them into a more current video and I won't lose track of them (UA-cam filters out comments I have answered unless I go back and manually find them as I am now!) The video is shot in Washington State (explained in the video, but I get it man - I always skip around the videos I watch) because I returned home to help my father in law to run his large farm in the US for 3 months. He was injured and lost a finger.

    Good vid. Love when people can ditch the pretention and steel snobbery and just talk practical knife use backed by real experience. Few quick thoughts/info tidbits: • check midway USA and Chicago knife works websites for sales while you're stateside. Midway tends to have the best sales on Cold Steel, SOG, and Buck. CKW is usually just lowest prices I see in general. I got my SRK-C for $23 on a midway sale. • the SRK C is a great knife, but the one problem I have with it that keeps it from being a real user for me is that the handle is very thin. For those of us with hands in an XL glove or larger, it's just tough to get a good grip without bearing down and getting fatigued. I have plans to strip and convex mine and it'll live in my trunk in a breakdown kit. • not sure about availability for that specific model, but leathermans and other multitools have sheaths with pockets for bit kits. There are leatherworkers out there that can make you one, too. Pretty handy and space saving. • my first experience with magnacut was with an early 60 hrc heat treat protocol and I definitely had a wire burr and not too impressive performance. De-burred on a ceramic rod and it fixed a lot of the problem, but was still not too impressive. So much more than just steel type matters to the user experience. Part of why I hate steel snobbery. Even "budget" steels are fantastic in the right geometry and HT and well more than most people need in their daily if we were all honest with ourselves. Spyderco has had the best 8cr I've tried to date. Grab a Tenacious if you find a sale. Sorry to hear about your FIL. Hope he has a speedy recovery!

    Isn't it easier just to run it through one of those diamond v-sharpeners and then slap it a few times across a leather strop and you're good to go the Apex is fine unless you're going to be performing surgery or something like that and my not so humble opinion hell my coffee cup is usually good enough to keep my age fine and my fancy knife sharpening kit I hardly ever use usually it's only on super steels with 60 plus hardness

    Yeah, 8cr is fine if it's well treated. Enough carbon to get 60-61 hrc, enough chromium to be fairly stainless, well balanced for the level of toughness required in a small knife. It's basically a slightly hypereutectic Sandvik steel with a bit more carbide and a bit less toughness.

    • @Elektroslag

      Lmao it's better toughness edge retention and corrosion resistance that 1095. It's a great steel and dirt cheap. Don't be a snob.
