- A thorough review of the Canon ip8720 printer.
OK, let me rephrase that... a review of TRYING to connect the Canon ip8720 printer up via wifi (spoiler alert: it never connected)
You will learn nothing helpful from this review. If you're trying to set this turd up and just have to know if it's you, this might offer some consoling words. It's not you. This is just a Canon and not an Epson. My $50 Epson has connected to my network over the years every time in less than a minute.
Just set up mine this past weekend and felt your pain. The only way I got it to work was after holding the wifi button for two seconds, go to your wifi router and press the WSP button. You have two minutes to press it, it should connect to your printers IP, if you router has a screen, you should see the printers IP appear on it. Afterwards, on your phone using the Canon app, it should have no issues finding the printer as long as your connected to your house wifi.
Thanks for the suggestions! This looks like a great printer and I typically like Canon a lot. Unfortunately the mesh routers don't have WSP. Grrr!!!!
@@jordaninglis9923 Good solution! Unfortunately our mesh routers don’t have WPA but for a traditional router, this could be the ticket. Thanks for sharing :)
Literally going through this right now. I have mesh routers too (Eero). You'd think in 2024 this wouldn't be an issue. Ugh. Going to try cable set up next before returning. P.S. My old black and white Brother connected just fine!
Just tried setting mine up too - went through the same BS. Also returning.
I don't know what's going on with printers these days. I have an older Epson XP-420 and it's fantastic. Have had no issues in years. I just got their latest version of the same series. It takes literally 15 minutes for it to start a print job.
I really needed this to be wifi but I went through the same BS as you. I am now trying to set it up by usb. Even that fails! Pathetic!
IN 2005 I moved to Japan. I plugged my imac network cable into the office network, expecting to fight with a router in Japanese for the next three days. Turned on my iMac, opened a browser, and was instantly online. TWENTY YEARS AGO... it just worked (cuz it was apple, I know). Now, I'm fighting with this canon printer for two days straight and debating to keep fighting or just call amazon and tell them this crap is going back.
Of course the biggest issue is the total garbage "Getting Started Guide". Originally written in fourth century Yidish, updated into seventeenth century Latin, and then finally into Chinese, then English, by a 9 year old Polish girl living in Argentina. I honestly do not think it could be any more useless if it was just printed in ancient Mongolian.
(for context, I wrote online business software for 20 years, I know how to use a computer).
Yes, this was a terrible printer. I wish I could point to a better one. I went with an Epson XP-6100 because it prints to DVDs but it is much worse than my old Epson XP-420 that I still use. They really do make printers as a catalyst for selling their proprietary marked-up ink. The FTC should do their job and put an end to this.
