A dog will go a long way. Most don’t realize it until you get a day where you have no motivation, no drive. They are always happy to see you, no matter what.

Pick an area away from the wood chips to take him to pee.( gravel or grass would work). Wait there until he pees and then give him the command word (get busy) and praise. He will be so much easier to deal with on cold nights and the wood chips will not end up smelling like a litter box.

glad you got a little buddy :)
make sure you play with its feet, ears, and have it get used to you putting your fingers in its mouth. get the pupper used to you checking it. makes it easier to do nails, check teeth and gums, get for ear infections all that stuff:)
we have 3 aussies and its made life so much easier, and my wife is a dog behavior specialist for work and runs a dog facility :). not just pulling stuff from my butt lol.
your life just got soo much better. pups going to have a great life in the woods:)

You will need Mosquito and tick repellant; and a good vet to get your shots (rabies, distemper, lepto). mosquito's spread west nile and other diseases. We use Advantix II for our pups..... apply once a month during bug season. In your area I would think Heart worm is a big deal, so you will need Heartworm chewies for the mosquito season, as well. Dogs are better than hooman's. You will always have their unconditional love, but they are completely dependant on you. You are their whole world.

I dont usually comment, BUT I gotta say, getting the dog will be one of the best decisions you'll ever make. Whatever you paid, they will bring you thousands of times back in fun, love, and companionship. Dogs are the bomb!! (Always loved the look of the Burnese Mountain dogs. They're cuteness goes off the scale...) My dog is my avatar. P.S. I knew what the name meant, sort of an astronomy geek since the 5th grade, in my 60's now.

    Welcome to doGfatherhood!
I realize that it's too late, but you should dig a drain if the entrance pools with water.
The most important thing to remember when raising and training a doG is to be consistent. Until he's about 6months old, walk your property line with him, show him his boundaries. He will tend to stay within that area. It helps if your urinate in the corners, and along the way to mark it for him: then he will too!

We have a Pyrenean mountain dog (5th one now), you will need a less slidey floor, and probably less high steps on the door to start with, ours only had one or two pee accidents - but we could leave the door open into a fenced area. Nothing is cuter than a pile of mountain dog puppies !

Wooooow so Ryan you spoke of a subtle change around the Ringworm....a workshop, a cabin, a heater, a shower, process of a formal kitchen & now the addition of a furry dude....
Ryan did ya know they have a word for all that process.... domestication. 😆

Also, you should buy a wind up clock, old-school wind up clock, wind it up roll it in a blanket or a towel and put it next to the puppy when it sleeps because I don’t think it’s mother’s heartbeat. It will help with the whining at night.

Kipper is a cute little puppy. But not for long. He will grow very, very fast in size. Buy just remember he is not an adult until he is 2 years old.
In the meantime, he will need lots of love and reinforcement to learn the rules.
Congratulations on becoming a new Dad.

  • @davidwilkinson333
    @davidwilkinson333 Місяць тому +1

    You did it! Yeah!👍😁
I was blessed with one that never really went through a teething/chewing phase but you can guarantee that if he does he'll pick your most significant, not to be chewed, items and ignore all the wood surrounding you!
Mine never bothered with toys but occasionally would find the biggest branch around and then run past you scourging the back of your legs. Not good when you're in shorts! 👺
Waste of time trying to dry them when wet and muddy. Just put him in his 'kennel' til he dries off then just sweep it out. 🙂
If you think a Bernese sheds too much hair, try getting a Leonberg too 😳😂
He'll soon take to hanging around near you and checking on you regularly.
I wish you many happy years together ... and just take him along in the canoe. Where you go, he goes, get used to it! 😂
Oh! And hard-boiled eggs make good, healthy treats that are easy to carry :-)

As a person who has raised alot of puppies over my years. I would recommend the small fenced yard. Until the puppy comes when you call and keep on lead until he doesn't get distracted by new sents and will come away from them when you call. Pups can move really fast and get lost in a matter of minutes. After you know he will come back, or stays close to you. Then extend the freedom to roam. Even then a trained dog will sometimes take off after some critter or other. So wishing you great success with your new companion. I can't imagine life without a dog.

The small fenced in area that you mentioned, right out front, would be a good idea for times when pup wants to go outside but you are busy inside or just don't feel like walking him. That way, you don't have to worry about him straying off. Regarding the metric system, it may be easier for measuring stuff, but we're all so used to the imperial system and have used it for so many years, I'd prefer to keep it. The pup sure is cute.

Hey Ryan, The long leash is a good idea but if the dog is doing something you don't want it to do have something in your hand that you can tempt it with e.g. dog treats and instead of running towards it - run away from it waving your hand to show it the food / treats and call it at the same time. If you have trained it with treats, it should come to you as opposed to you running around after it. The negative aspect of a long or short leash attached to the dog is that it can get snagged as the dog is running and may hurt the dog. Enjoy.

Personally I would, but Pop's machine went down the road 30 years ago. May only need a sandpoint depending on location. Oh, and a solar windmill pump/generator. What company will step up for that? I don't know if you knew this, but the ash from your firepits makes great fill. Just sift it thru your trailer mesh and spread it out.
It's also VERY good fertilizer for grass.
Maybe a few seeds and ash???

Put flap type doors around the bed and the fold out section should have a screened perimeter fence for under the bed. it can be used to keep the dog out or in emergency to keep the dog under the bed.

You haven't even got the pup yet and it's already spoiled. You're going to be a great dog daddy. Can't wait to meet him. If I were you I'd check into a flea and tick collar for puppies. Maybe call a vet for correct information.
