Great Vid.. In my 60 plus years.... going down the Mekong river in a longboat, was one of the best things I've ever done, we finished the day in Luang Prabang and had a beer Laos watching the sunset...absolute classic watching them park those longboats literally shunting their boat in between two boats already parked and making a space.
Sounds great Scotty. I've done a few Issan boat trips but none of any real length, I have had plenty of Beer Laos though lol. Yes, those pilots are very skilful. I love the way they negotiate the strong currents. Cheers
Hi another great look at the real Thailand. We have same sort of thing , not as big, at the beach were a rock gets trapped then the tide rolls it about and grinds out the hole. Fascinating. All the best.
@karlsthailand new zealand. You mention wet season so I guess it's like longer tides. Yearly not daily. Also being told not to take souvenir rocks and luck. Well I did it. I have piece of Tham Luang oops 😬
@@karlsthailand Hi mate, I'm ok but getting over a serious back injury. I'm hoping to get to TH this winter but it probably won't be until January or February. I'll message you for a catch up if I get there 👍
Nice one Karl, another fantastic place to explore in Ubon. Not been to this one but been to similar on the Mun river outside Khong Chiam by Don Tana island. You can park right by the river or go by boat from where the Mun meets the Mekong. I’ll never forget going under the road bridge into Khong Chiam from Ubon. It was dry season and the high water mark was 20-25m above us😮😮😮 The mind boggles at that much water and the immense power of mother nature ❤🇹🇭
Yes, the Mekong is an incredible river and the power of it is mind blowing all along it's length. I've actually lived on the banks of it before and like you say the variance in it's height is remarkable. Cheers
Ahhh the magical tropics and sensational riverboat experiences just can't beat it. Went from SemReap to Phonmpen Cambo on a big V8 launch 5 or 6 hours in full flood like the expanse of ocean but floating mangrove islands stilt house and small fishing boats everywhere yeah....anyway booked tickets yesterday to Bangers and staying for 2 months.
@karlsthailand Thanks Karl yeah that's it the Tongle Sap! I've got 2 months and plan on visiting Chang Mai amongst other places. Bangkok only 2 nights then Patts meet up with friends etc. If you're around in Chang Mai would be interested in meeting up or an exploration walk.
Hey Karl I hope all is well. Very interesting place. There is an area in Central Vietnam with similar formations. 30 years ago I went over 3 "monkey bridges" and got a boot sucked off in a muddy area to get there. Lots of mosquitos in the Vietnam "holes" area. Also next to a river. That strange stone looks like a meteorite but most are made of iron and very heavy. They also usually contain fingerprint sized indentations that are made as they melt entering earth's atmosphere. That boat looked brand new.
Had a few changes today n my situation here recently Mal, will be in touch. Vietnam is such a beautiful country, hopefully I can get there to vlog sometime. Hope you are well.
Great vid Karl, ive not been there for about 12 years, also about 20 years ago further South (Kong Cheim) you could get the boat to see the two colour rivers then go to the Laos side to a market with all the knock off goods for sale. No customs or anything. Not there now 🙃🙃
I liked the bad fortune associated with taking a rock as a souvenir. next stop in town I'd be looking for a shop selling them. this is the case in the arizona desert at a location known for finding meteorites. there is a shop nearby selling them if you did not find one on your own.
You didn't sound convinced about the heart shaped hole. Is it frowned upon to take rocks or artifacts away from sites there? I'm sure I've heard of people getting in trouble for pinching things for souvenirs.
You picked up on that well Mark, I'm just too cynical to put much importance to those things although it can make it more colourful for tourists. Yes, attitudes are changing, Stonehenge is like Fort Knox these days. Cheers
Surreal landscape. Who needs to go all the way to Mars when you have this? Well done for showing us this place.
My pleasure Eddy, thanks for the comment.

Never knew of that place. Crazy the power of the Mekong and how it carves out the rocks. Very cool.
Cheers Karl!
It's a bit out of the way for many tourists Andrew but definitely worth a look outside of the Rainy Season. Cheers

Cheers Nigel. It was a cool trip and I’m sure we’ll do some more together.
Nice one again Karl, rocks look like the moon face . It’s amazing the power of the water to carve it out 👍

Yes, time has changed attitudes towards such souvenirs Donald. Stonehenge in the UK is like Fort Knox these days. Cheers
I went there when it was bone dry about fifteen years ago.. Had too poop in one of holes! you got to go, you got go.
Lol. Some of them holes are just about the perfect size for that aren't Paul? Cheers
This really looks similar to Hampi, a place in India, only larger.
I Googled Hampi, looks like an incredible place. Cheers
