- My Sunday Saltwater Reef Tank Maintenance Routine | Blue Reef Tank
This week, I'm sharing what I do on a typical Sunday as part of my fish tank maintenance routine, including glass cleaning, water change, dosing and feeding the fish. Sundays are usually quite busy, but the rewards are worth it - I love to relax and enjoy the tanks on Sunday nights!
I'm also showing how I set up my RODI unit. One trick that I've learned is to use a long airline tubing to connect the output directly to your water bucket. This way, you don't have to lift the heavy water buckets around anymore :)
I hope you enjoy this week's content and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss out on the exciting things to come!

as a freshwater scrub i bow down
Seriously, i really enjoyed see the video with introvet, calm, classes and no naration
Everything is so clean and OCD-level organized; I LOVE IT!
Thanks Jayson, glad you enjoyed it!
I really like this video because it shows all of the mundane tasks to keep a reef tank running. That and it looks so cool in this video.
Glad you enjoyed the video Jason. All the maintenance tasks that we do for our reef tanks are worthwhile in the end :)
Nice and relaxing to watch and nice song.
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it!
I love the photography , music and pace of your vids!
the best aquarium video ever
so satisfy and relieve
thanks for the video
Absolutely love your content. Please dont stop.
Thank you! :D
So peaceful ❤️
😇
Wonderful ..............
This is an important part of this passion 👍.
Totally agree! 🙌
I have 4 freshwater tanks and always considered trying saltwater. Watching your videos got me excited enough to order a waterbox last week. Time to give saltwater a try. Thanks for the amazing videos!
Good luck with the tank Dymone! If you have any questions, feel free to ask :)
I got 125 gallon salt water tank and i love it !
I've been watching many of your videos of your beautiful reef tank today. I apologize because I haven't been clicking the 'thumbs up' on the videos I've since watched. I've been watching using the playlist feature youtube has. I'll be going back to do just that beause I've been really enjoying them. It is really a beautiful beautiful reef tank! And the music? Uuh. Just a beautiful, relaxing, and enjoyable experience I'm having enjoying your upkeep and your beautiful reef tank. Thank you for sharing with us. New subscriber here...
best reefer on youtube!
I am nowhere near there but thank you so much for the kind words 😁
Great video. Everything looks spotless. Great Job.
Thank you!
Good vid as always! Nice and relaxing to watch
Thanks mate! 😁
YAYYYY A NEW UPLOAD

Thanks for watching and hello from Australia 😎
Great video as always bud.
Thanks Brian! 👍
Just found your channel, your videos are great! :)
Thank you Jo! Glad you enjoyed them
beautiful tank and very nice estup around them
Thank you!
Nice vid
Fabulous video! So relaxing with my coffee ;-)
Perfect combination! :)
@@BlueReefTank :-)
Great video!
Thanks!
Nice tank
Beautiful set up! Please make sure to keep an eye on any chips or cracks in the glass especially by the rounded glass corners. That series of tank has been known to fail at the corners, and unfortunately I know from a traumatic experience with the same exact tank! Best to have a backup/ qt tank ready to go in an emergency. Keep up the beautiful work and happy reefing!
Thanks for the heads up Michael! I hope you didn't lose anything (apart from the tank)
@@BlueReefTank Luckily with some fast acting and spare buckets all the livestock was saved! It's really too bad about those IM Nuvo series tanks because they are beautiful tanks but the rounded glass corners create weak points in the glass which is why their newer lines done have the curved corners anymore ;) My Nuvo 16 broke at the front right corner without any cracks or warnings besides rupturing out of nowhere. Keep those buckets handy!
Incredible videos 🙌✨ Loving your content, with practical advice on running and maintaining a successful reef tank.
Glad you like them! :)
😎💯👍🏾🔥….nice set up…new sub
Thank you so much for the sub!
This video is great! Beautiful simple setup. I'm currently battling low alk in my 25 gallon lagoon. I don't do water changes unless I'm dosing chemiclean for a cyanobloom, or dose and I'm starting to see the effects of it with my zoas. It's mainly softies, euphillias, mushrooms, and zoas. The mineral content has diminished over time and by doing water top offs with distilled water I buy from the store, the alkalinity levels have dropped off. The guy at my store says topping off with RO spring water would put the tank in a better mineral balance for the corals, so I'm going to give it a try when I run out of distilled and until then I'm going to do light water changes to slowly restore the balance. The only thing I dose is Kent Purple Tech, and occasionally chemiclean (when I do a water change). I've always been on edge about getting an RO system for sometime now, I think this video did an excellent job of demonstrating how easy they are to use.
RODI unit is one of the best investment in this reefing hobby :) It will save you a lot of headache in the long run. You can try to bring the alk up by dosing Sodium bicarb but definitely get a test kit before you do that haha
Having 0 tds rodi water is a huge factor in not having cyanobacteria build up. High tds can mean that other elements such as silicates might be entering the water column, and cyanobacteria feeds off phosphates and silicates. Simply making rodi water can in essence remove your cyano problem all together :)
Красота!
Same body cleanser😅
👍🏼
Great tank! Thanks for sharing with us. May I ask what light set you use for the mangrove plants?
I got that light from a brand called AquaVivo 🙂
👍
Wish only instrumental music was used, because I love the bg sounds but don't much care for the vocals haha. Great video anyways, LOVE the tank (and your floors lmao).
I will make one with no instrumental music next time :)
@@BlueReefTank cheers for the reply! Unless you're trolling me (which lol, fair enough), the ask was for only instrumental music haha. Again just a minor ask/note. The production and everything else is top notch! Keep up the great work.
@@zantrex4 Sorry I read it wrong! Haha I find that most people prefer instrumental music and hence why my latest video is all instrumental 😁 Some people even prefer to have no music because they wanted to listen to the background sounds
@@BlueReefTank you're the man! I hope to one day have an aquarium setup like yours. Thanks again and keep the videos coming!
I'm suggesting to start dosing MG, CA (BIG 2) buying a tester and this for one time only, that you'll know how much it needs for your tank. Try pellets than frozen food, it will maintain your nitrient level, btw nice video.. love watching that mandarins 👍
Thanks for the suggestion mate!
What wave maker are you running in there? I'm looking for somthing small for a waterbox 10 or 20. It looks perfect.
Love your setup and the style of video! What is the name of opening song?
Thank you 😊 It's called Crush by Liam Maye. All the songs are listed in the video description.
Thanks! I checked the description and didn’t see it, must have overlooked it, haha.
Hey, very nice reef tank! where do you get those phyto containers? I would love to see a video how you setup your phyto collection.
He already has a video on how he cultures phyto
Hi Han - As William said before, here's the video on how I setup my phytoplankton culture ua-cam.com/video/j0EVgH7l0gc/v-deo.html 😁 Hope you enjoy it!
Nice tank. Well organized and maintained. What size tank?
Thank you! It's a 16 gallon tank :)
Relaxing, thanks! Do you also scuba dive?
No I don't but if I do I will take some videos :D Why is that?
@@BlueReefTank you gotta certified esp if you're in AU, see the coral IRL ( I'm an Advanced diver). Promise you will not regret it and you'll wonder why you haven't done it yet!!
@@areyouarobotz That definitely sounds cool! I'll check it out, thanks mate😎
How old are your tanks? What are your other main methods of nutrient export outside of water changes? How do you avoid algae when dosing so much aminos/reef energy and daily feeding? Very well made videos! Just subbed.
This tank has been running for 6 years. It's my first ever reef tank. Water changes is the only nutrient export method that I used. I have a lot of worms, sponges and feather dusters in the back chamber that keeps the nutrients low 🙂 I like to keep things simple. Haha thanks for the sub!
@@BlueReefTank Thanks for the response!
super videos, they are so calm and relaxing. I just watched all your videos now. Haha... I would kindly like to ask you something, so the RODI water that you mixed with the salt on that bucket, is that the water you will use for the water change for next week? just wondering because you mixed it after you did the water change in your tank and is it ok to let the water sit inside of the bucket for a week? thanks a lot :)
Hi Leonel - Glad that you enjoyed the video! That's correct, but I sometimes use that water to do a bit of water changes during the week in my quarantine tank as well. :) I always like to have some new saltwater ready just in case something happen.
@@BlueReefTank thank you so much for the reply! Very kind :) is it safe then to keep it in the bucket for a week or so? No issue with the water? I think I need to start doing that. Cheers
It should be fine for a week 🙂 I normally keep a pump and a heater running all the time so the water stay heated and aerated
@@BlueReefTank Thank you so much for the reply and help! very kind :)
Most welcome 😁
Hello, congratulations for your channel,,, and for your beautiful aquariums,,, I have a question for you,,,, what osmosis equipment do you use,,,, greetings
You can find all the equipments list in the video description 🙂
Hi, I'm looking at the list in the description of your video but I don't see the name of the osmosis equipment, sorry
which is the background song that is beautiful !!!
I listed the music in the description 😁
This tank is pretty what tank brand is this? And what sizes do they come in?
This tank is from Innovative Marine and it's the Nuvo 16 version. I think they've discontinued this tank due to some issues but they still have other tanks 😁
Can you give me a link to where you purchased your RO/DI unit?
What camera do you use? It’s very nice
Thanks mate! You can check out the description. I list the camera and lens I use there 😁
Bonjour c’est quoi votre raclette pour nettoyer les vitres ? Vos aquarium sont magnifiques !!!
Thanks Julien! It's called Flipper Cleaner Float Nano :)
what percentage do you run the kessil 360 on in that nan0 tank ?
I've shared my Kessil A360X light schedule, you can check it out here: ua-cam.com/channels/dggrloP2N08UIsRpb6Kfww.htmlcommunity?lb=UgkxINSyuLGb03q5dEJHGv3aO2L7Hgj0g66u
Hello can you please tell me where you get the sodium bicarb ?
How much would I add to a 25 gal tank?
Thank you 😊
Hi Chore, You can get it from any supermarkets. It's basically called baking soda :)
In terms of how much to dose, it varies from tank to tank. If you have a lot of "skeletal" corals like LPS, and SPS, you might need to dose more than someone that just have soft corals. It's best to get a test kit and measure your current alkalinity level, and then add the sodium bicarb to the level that you desire :) Check out Bulk Reef Supply videos. They explained alkalinity really well
@@BlueReefTank Thank you!
Can i ask why you add salt to the new RODI water?
Just curious - when you lose water to evaporation you would just top up with regular RODI without salt right?
are you topping with salt water becasue youre doing water changes on top?
That's actually me making new saltwater for water changes and not my auto top off water :) and yes you are correct. You'd top up any lost water from evaporation with regular RODI water and not saltwater as the salt doesn't evaporate
How often do you do water changes? I want to start up a saltwater tank and don’t know how often I should do it?
I do 10-20% water change every week or two 😁
@@BlueReefTank thank you so much for replying this helps a lot 😄
Hi! How you can stop the fishes jump out from the tank ?
Having a lid on top of the tank is the best from to keep them from jumping out of the tank
Beautiful tank but… lol too much time to take care of it. Took you half the day to do it. I keep a freshwater aquarium and my maintenance is 45-60 min tops.
Hi. Did this flipper scraper scratch your tank?
Not at all 🙂
How did you have an established colony of copepods in your tank?? I really want a mandarin fish :(
I usually dose phytoplankton everyday to maintain the copepods population :)
How many gallons is that?
How many days do you often do the water change?
I usually do water changes every week :)
Great video just didn’t wanna watch it because of the music though
So your maintenance takes the whole Sunday? 😰
Probably 2-3 hours per tank and I have 3 tanks so yeah, whole Sunday haha
Poooorrrraaa. Que densimetro é esse???
Sorry what tank is this
Tank is too small for those fish. Nice video though.
