Thanks for posting this! These guys are really cool and I love the show tapes! The only problem is each character doesn’t have much personality, but I absolutely love the bizarre designs. This footage is a real treat to watch!
I had seen this in person and was surprised when I first seen it as it seemed to follow in the footsteps of Chuck E. Cheese. Being fond of 50's music, I actually liked it more. Sadly, this was the only place that had this setup and it was in a small mall with only two anchors and it became a ghost town and was eventually closed and torn down.
They weren't well known as Chuck E. Cheese and it is clear they just performed music, where as CEC they had skits and other show items that allowed you to get to know the characters better. Uncle Boomers was clearly just the Deli's way of hosting birthday parties and offering a 'live' band, which turned out to be animatronics similar to those at CEC in terms of size and function. The character movements aren't as accurate as CEC characters either, but that is due to the fact that CEC characters use compressed air as the driving force, which is pretty fast and accurate. I am not sure what these characters used.
Thanks for posting! I remember this place. It was inside a German deli inside the old Gardiner Manor Mall. The deli hosted birthday parties and that is when they used the show. Sadly, the mall was one of the first that I have witnessed to turn into a ghost town. The deli hung on and was one of the last tenants to stick it out, but eventually they left as well. The mall was eventually closed and torn down. I am happy to see that someone managed to record this show and post it here.
Glad you enjoyed it! This video was filmed after the show was first installed into the deli, the person who programmed the figures sent me it. Do you recall the year of their closure or the deli's name?
@@PasqAnimatronics Yes, I did and remember it clearly as it was part of my childhood. After reading your description again, I had did a bit of research on that Scott Pokorak fellow and found out that he went on to create the animatronics for the Stew Leonard's chain of stores. Me, never having been to a Stew Leonard's yet, have no idea what was going on there. Since you mention Scott had given you that footage, I am now curious about other installations he had done. As you mentioned a couple of them, I had found one on my own. So that means he at least done four of them. As for the year the mall closed. I was dating my wife at the time I was showing her the mall and it was very close to the time of closure. So it was approximately 1997 - 1999 when the mall was closed and subsequently demolished. The actual name of the deli escapes me now, but I do remember the sign on the front of the venue saying only, "Deli". Also a fellow below mentioned Bernie's. But that doesn't ring a bell. For some reason, I am thinking of a woman's name that start's with an "A", but again, I am not sure. It was just always known as "That German deli in the mall". The video itself does confirm about what I said about it being a restaurant first, but I vaguely remember that. I know the deli took the spot over and only used the Uncle Boomer's attraction when they hosted a birthday party. For the most part, they served pizza for the kids and adults could order a deli sandwich. There was space on the deli side to eat, but just about all of an entire mall unit's space was devoted to Uncle Boomer's. The stage's backside was facing the mall and thus passerby's could not see into the venue. You had to go in the deli and then look through half wall windows into the birthday area to see the stage and as you probably can surmise, the curtains were closed unless the band was playing. Since my parents mainly did business with the deli, it was only on rare occasions there was a birthday party going on at that given time. Naturally I was a bad boy and forced my parents to stay so I could see Uncle Boomer and his band play. I am curious to know if you happen to be still in contact with Scott Pokorak, I would LOVE to pick his brain about this show.
@@jukingeo The last time I talked to Scott was back in May, his company is called VP Animations. Back when this show was made, he was working for United Robotics. The other installations that use this soundtrack are all shows from his own company. I believe the person who recorded the tracks is friends with him and produced a few more tracks for his later shows, although the voices sound slightly different.
@@PasqAnimatronics So you talked with him recently, huh? I was going to ask about who did the cover music, so he had is own band too? Wow! I would have been cool if he was able to do a disco show. I would have loved to pick is brain about his shows. I am curious if the driving force was compressed air or servos, or even a combination.
@@GrievingForGrace If you have your own footage of the show, it’d be pretty neat to see it if you’re able to upload it. I’m not sure if you meant your own video or this video, but as of now this is the only video of the show that I know of, so any additional video of it would be interesting to see!
I tried to do some research on United Robotics, but come up with very little on the company. Given that United Robotic / Scott Pokorak had made a few installations at the time, it seemed as if they were doing fine initially, but then suddenly went out of business. It could be that they might have been sued for the music material if they didn't secure the rights from the copyright owners. Even though they made their own covers of classic songs, these installations were put into locations where people used them to make money. I know that Chuck E Cheese was doing the same thing at the time, but did procure permission to use the "Chuckified" covers of the songs. Again, I don't know this for sure, but I am just speculating on that as to why they suddenly just went out of business.
this is how old iam my grandma took me here atleast once a week when I a kid. the things we did before cell phones and the internet you walked around the mall.
I respectfully disagree. I feel proportions do play an important role when it comes to characters. Obviously they don't have to be realistic but say having a tiny head with itsy bitsy feet and hands on a huge body may look weird if not appropriately taken into account when in the design process. Playing around with proportions can help create something that's more visually unique while still feeling alive when done properly. I was just wondering what the original designer had in mind as the other characters have fairly normal proportions in comparison to the wolf.
@@chichoschannel but it’s like a cartoon character. Why do clowns have big feet? Why do some characters have big noses. It doesn’t really matter or need to be realistic since it’s a wolf that plays the guitar. You might not like the design and that’s fine but I think it looks nice.
This is fun. These guys look great. The birds (I assume they are the Wingdings) spinning around with the wall is very cool. Shame they didn't have more shows with these characters out there. Would've been cool if they had some dialogue and developed the characters and their personalities a bit, but what can ya do. Also great to hear them singing covers of real songs. Been watching random animatronics shows recently, and there's quite a few out there that just sang lame public domain children's songs, like "This Old Man" and whatever.
Yeah, I really like their covers of songs too. A lot of the same people who created this show also made the Electric Mice Orchestra when they were with Advanced Animations. That show has a bit more to the actual characters as they all have names and some of their shows have dialogue.
@@PasqAnimatronics That's cool. It's fun to find animatronics shows from all over. There were *so many* throughout the '80s and '90s. I grew up in Metro-Detroit, Michigan, so my place was *Major Magic's All Star Pizza Revue* , with the *Birthday Brigade* animatronics that performed there.
I like the bear and pig designs (I don’t know their names sorry) but the two birds and wolf designs look weird and kind of cursed for the two birds it because of the lack of wings that birds have and the beaks with two much lipstick and makeup ( I know it because it was to show the birds were female but it looks really cursed on animartiocs sorry) and for the wolf it because his head is bigger than his body (as his body is skinny it compared) and his arms are really thin so it makes it really ugly to the eye (also if you like these designs then it ok that just my opinion and that yours).I like their show their singing it very nice to hear.
