Oppenheimer is a 2023 biographical thriller film written and directed by Christopher Nolan. Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film chronicles the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist who was pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project, and thereby ushering in the Atomic Age. Cillian Murphy stars as Oppenheimer, with Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer's wife Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves, director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a senior member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. The ensemble supporting cast includes Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh.

I loved how Strauss was so confident in his scheme until the very end when he was denied a seat on The Cabinet.
He made me hate him so much! Such a good job.
It wasn't until the second scene with him to even realize it was RDJ, which in my view is such a good thing.

It does actually since Untitled Review is strictly spoiler free and Doug Reviews isn’t and given Oppenheimer was a real person it doesn’t make that much sense to think of Oppenheimer in terms of spoilers.
@@smoolluis7092 Broo what? It's a movie made for preteen girls (Who have absolute shit taste in everything btw) and wine moms who will forget the movie because of their thinly veiled totally-not-an-alcoholic-it's-just-wine alcoholism.
It's also just a shit movie.
Nolan tells us at the beginning of the movie that this is the story of Prometheus. Imagine telling the story of Prometheus and ending it with him giving fire to humanity. You lose the full meaning of the story if you don't show Prometheus' doom afterward. Nolan starts his film by telling us what we're going to see, he's very clear about it. It's like a more mature version of the opening of The Prestige (just as the ending is a more mature version of the ending of Inception). So when people complain that the movie wasn't what they thought it would be, that Nolan somehow lied to them by not making the full focus of the movie the atomic bomb, it just frustrates the hell out of me. We desperately need more media literacy in this country!

Yes, exactly, and it was literally titled “Oppenheimer.” The movie was about HIM.
I love that this wasn't a typical, histiographic, tortured genius biopic. Oppenheimer actually feels like a real person and Cillian Murphy deserves an Oscar for his performance. I usually roll my eyes at actors in biopics getting nominated because the movies/performances are sometimes so obviously designed to be Oscar bait. But Cillian's performance in Oppenheimer has a certain, subtle, non-scenary-chewing authenticity to it that deserves all the praise.
"Ive become death, the destroyer of worlds" the film made that quote all the more real and palpable.

Oppenheimer, was careful with his words after the bombings, but his actions politically showed his regret/fear of what he had created.
Reminds me of the story about Alfred Nobel reading his obituary "The merchant of death is dead" then spending his fortune to set up the Nobel Prize

And the way alot of people just ignored him. Really demonstrated, the naivete of the world and the lack of understanding of what they built.
His flaw was his naïveté. He thought creating the bomb would so terrify people they would never have another war. What he didn’t understand and what his arrogance couldn’t admit was that the scientists would not control the use of it. After Hiroshima/Nagasaki he realized governments would just keep trying to make more powerful weapons. An arms race. MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) wasn’t going to work as a deterrent to war. This film is brilliant. The people “not for everyone”! Are people who want to watch popcorn movies, not anything that will make them THINK.
As someone who had courses in modern physics back in undergrad, the first section of the film was a surreal pleasure, seeing all these people who started all of this study. Binding energies, the mathematics of fission and fusion, and all of these fundamental concepts we've built physics on . . . they were the pioneers who made the logical leap, then finding the math to back it up. It's hard, humbling, and inspiring to see these people and realize they were just people. Anyone could aspire to be as great. Then there's the project itself, which is increasingly well publicized and has moments of relatable humanity.
Fantastic all around. Three hours well spent.

@@talandelana6873 I didn't pay enough attention, and that level of physics is still beyond me. I can tell you the mass of a nucleus differs from the sum of its parts, and that the difference between the mass of a U-235 nucleus and its daughter elements times the speed of light squared is the energy released, but I couldn't explain, or even comprehend, their proofs why.
However, the people in the radiation lab had radiation burns when we first meet them, the story is apparently very accurate, and everything I did know about, aside from the sensationalism around fusing Nitrogen (which was never possible once they did the math, but was reported as possible when declassified) was accurate. I trust they did their due diligence on the math on the board. The people involved in the making of the film were obviously passionate beyond belief.
It honestly was one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time.
Murphy and Damon were fantastic and of course, Robert Downey Jr. nailed it.
As an amateur historian, I've read a few things about Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project but, never knew the whole scale and complexity of such a
project. Didn't know how the government wanted to smear the reputation of such a brilliant man.
I love also there was hardly any CGI used for the effects.
We need more films like this.

"It's the meme that saved movies" - so true! Disney [inadvertently] taught us that we don't need to see movies in the cinema, they'll be on a streaming service in no time. Oppenheimer countered this by reminding us that [some] movies are made for the big screen and have to be watched in a cinema to get the full impact. And Barbenheimer reminded us that movies are cultural touchstone moments, and if you want to participate then you need to watch those movies when they are originally released in cinemas.
What about Top Gun: Maverick from last year.

I nearly cried when that shrilling, chilling shriek full of pain and suffering came out of nowhere. I still can hear it in my mind. Horrific moment.
When he was talking to his team and they all aplaud to the fact that two japanese cities have just been bombed and they happily wave with flags... It hit me pretty hard. Great scene.

I’m going to be a little nerdy, but the silence before the sound of the explosion is true to physics. Light travels faster than sound, so the loud explosion arrived at the perfect moment in the scene.
Honestly the silence before the explosion is scarier than the explosion itself.

The last 3ed made the movie for me. Oppenheimer really did not fight back. He really did feel guilty.. The quote “there is blood on my hands” was a really real thing he said to Truman.. Truman really did call him a crybaby! The last 3ed shows that he is broken and just wants to be separated and he really did feel that humanity was doomed by his creation
Many people have compared this film to Oliver Stone's JFK (1991) due to the epic scope, masterful editing, & all-star cast. I've noticed that very few reactors have watched the latter. Hopefully, this would spark renewed interest in the genre.

As much as I love every single actor in this movie, I really wanna take a moment to praise Jason Clarke's performance. I was actually surprised by how good he was despite the limited time on screen. But, like I said, every actor is just flawless. Guess we are gonna have the same case with Cillian Murphy this year, as we had with Brendan Fraser the previous year. I don't know what possibly can prevent him from winning the oscar. And also, the sound design is just incredible. Especially when you went to the cinema for the first time in a year and a half. What a breathtaking experience.
His performance made me wanna reach through the screen and strangle him XD. Means he did amazing, as did everyone else in the movie.
Jason Clarke deserves just as much academy attention as Robert Downey in my opinion. He literally was the 3rd act antagonist.

Nolan getting his Oscar recognition is long overdue. I'm definitely hoping this movie is for him what "Titanic" was for Cameron.
Cillian Murphy has been a pretty underrated actor for quite some time. I'm so glad to see him get a role like this and completely knock it out of the park.
After seeing the movie 5 times (yes I am obsessed, I know) already, I can definitely say the 1st and 2nd acts are INCREDIBLE, and while on first watch, the 3rd act certainly seemed to drag a bit, upon rewatches, I think I have grown to appreciate it more. It does an incredible job of showing the fallout of a lot of the stuff that happened during the first 2 acts, and was very well put together. Overall I think Cillian Murphy was AMAZING, I couldn’t see anyone but Oppenheimer when looking at him and his performance, and RDJ did an equally amazing job as Straus. I really think Murphy, RDJ, Nolan, and the film itself will all be getting Oscar’s for this one

@@michaelb9537 it definitely was, I still get shivers down my spine during the trinity test and especially that first scream where the audio cuts out during the speech. Very good movie and as you watch it more, you start noticing stuff you missed and also appreciating it more
yeah the 3rd act on first watch felt anticlimactic until the turning point near the end, which it all came together and I KNEW on second watch and piecing the aspects of this film together, it would be a cinematic masterpiece.
In a way it's kinda fitting that a movie about the inventor of the atomic bomb came out in July, Because it's the 78th anniversary of the Trinity test and the anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings are also next month, So I guess they thought what better way to spend those anniversaries than to make a film about the man who created the world's most destructive weapon ever invented by human hands.
It's definitely more of a Holiday Season feature that we just got early on
It's a testament to Christopher Nolan's immense directing talent that he made a three hour movie mostly composed of dialogue, and managed to make it interesting throughout the extensive running time.

Funnily enough, there is indeed a mini series about the same topic produced in 1980 and aired on the bbc. Every episode is like 50 min and you get to dive really into the life of oppenheimer and how people lived and thought in that era.

Rami Malek as David Hill was phenomenal, the trial scene just shows how versatile and eloquent his acting can be. His greatest roles were in Mr Robot, Bohemian Rhapsody, No Time to Die and The Pacific. I hope he gets an award for this small but impactful role.
I will see Oppenheimer soon as it comes on a place I can manage. My uncle was a physicist and worked with the man. It will be interesting as Ed had little to say about it all as it was a moral delimma for him.
Yet he felt it was important for us to produce the energy first as America had a better set of values than the Germans!!

Incredible movie. I've been Nolan fan for a while and this is one of my favorites from him. Cillian's performance is mesmerizing. It would be great to see both Nolan and Cillian Murphy winning their first Oscars for this

If you think of this movie as a metaphor for Nolan’s own career, how he ushered in a new age of supehero movies or indeed a new age of filmmaking with TDK, yet simultaneously regrets it because of the consequences and how irrevocably filmmaking has been shaped since then, this movie gets even better.

It is so fascinating how these two movies happened to be made and released at the same time. They have more in common than it appears at surface level. The Barbie doll is a product of a post-war economic boom and also emerged out of a response to women having to return home after their husbands came back from active duty during WWII.

I’ll see Barbie this weekend so I can collect thoughts there. But my God Oppenheimer was a spectacle. The acting is phenomenal, the visuals are the best Nolan and his team have done yet & the story of the man behind the A-bomb is one long overdue to get a film treatment. I had tears in my eyes by the end and my breath stolen when the Trinity test occurs

This movie is emotional to me, as I am Japanese and I realized that even Americans didn’t want to drop the bomb, even though it would be a quick way to end the war. I nearly cried thinking of the thousands that were vaporized when the bomb dropped
If the US truly knew how much the Japanese elite and military brass were keeping the Emperor insulated and how the ordinary Japanese populace had mostly moved on to going about their ordinary lives, then Hiroshima and Nagasaki wouldn’t’ve been bombed.
The one thing that I don’t think the movie could have conveyed was that while yes Truman was horrifically callous to Oppenheimer, he himself even grappled with the idea of dropping the bomb.
Truman was a World War I veteran and the casualties that his advisors were projecting was at least one million. This isn’t even going into the catastrophic damage done to the people of Japan in the invasion. Needless to say the numbers horrified the 33rd President
But even bearing that in mind, Truman felt that dropping the bombs was the equivalent of unleashing the Christian apocalypse. In this respect though, Oppenheimer may have felt he had blood on his hands for inventing the damned thing, but Truman was also correct in that the blood was on Truman’s hands as he was the one who ultimately pulled the trigger.
@@wilji1090 Then again, Pres. Truman only recently stepped in upon Pres. FDR’s passing, and prior to his ascension, VP Truman was rather kept in the dark regarding the Manhattan Project and other matters of national security. To the eyes of voters who’ve lived in wartime for the past four years, Pres. Truman was under pressure to fulfill what his late predecessor had started.
Also, I think Gary Oldman conveyed that double-edged sword in his brief meeting with Oppie well enough, especially with that look as he somewhat-mockingly offered his handkerchief. “Yes Oppie, you do have blood on you, but I splashed myself with more for ending up as the only world leader to have approved two nuclear weapons dropped on human populations...so far. STOP telling us to feel the sorriest for you.”
I did Barbenheimer. I had an hour between my showing of Barbie and Oppenheimer. Definitely the soonest I've ever seen a movie in theaters after seeing another one. Not the first time I've seen two in a day, though (Titanic 3D in the morning and The Hunger Games that night).
I think your are spot on with the last 3rd. I checked my watch, realized I still had a lot of movie left, resigned myself to it, then was on the edge of my seat for the remainder of the movie :)

Loved the last third, I was practically engaged throughout the whole thing. I was pretty curious where they could have possibly ended the film and I love how it came back to that one scene.
Saw it last night. I was deeply affected by the weight of it and the tragedy of what they did to Oppenheimer. For a 3 hour movie, you absolutely don't feel the length. It is so tightly paced and the way they play with time almost seems to help that. I can't help but feel that the last line just scarred my brain. I don't think that will ever leave me, nor will the rain.
Good review bro. I love how you’re able to explain this excellent movie better than I could. Also, the only thing I’d add is that anyone who watches this movie should have empathy and/or an open mind while watching the movie because there are some parts in the movie that can get really confusing if you do not have empathy or an open mind or where you don’t use your brain to pay attention to stuff. Also, Oppenheimer is basically Pearl Harbor and The Godfather combined. However, this movie felt the most real to me because I could legit put myself in each of those characters shoes
If Cillian Murphy receives an Academy Award nomination, he will become the second actor to be recognized with an Oscar in Christopher Nolan's films. The first actor to achieve this distinction was Heath Ledger.
The third act is essential in telling his life! He was the most renowned man in America until his enemies destroyed him. Stopping the film before this part of his life is ridiculous. Nolan did a fantastic job adapting the book. We read it after watching the movie twice. So far we’ve watched it 4 times since July and it always blows us away. Masterwork.
For me, I had a very similar reaction to this movie as well. I was confused when it kept going, but then realized that it was to show everything crumble down around him, and I was hooked. I was frustrated. I wanted to scream at the screen. It was honestly brilliant.
All the actors, the director, editors, writers, etc. was completely on point. It’s probably one of my favorite movies of the year.
I agree with you mindset of not being able to do these movies back to back in theaters. Like I could probably do it at home where I can pause when I want, use the bathroom, get a snack/drink, streatch for a bit, SOMETHING other than sit in a movie chair! like honsetly even 3 hours for one movie is starting to push it! I don't binge things for 3 hours strait at home without at least taking a 5 minuet break!

Having the opposite reaction I had to Tenet - the more I’ve thought about it the more I love this movie. It was marketed as a Summer blockbuster but was really a cerebral arthouse bio-epic

I felt the same way it started to drag, but then it pulled me back in to really appreciate what happened.
I am SO happy that Doug made a comparison to David Lynch in this video because I completely got that vibe too!
I didn’t see them both in the same day, but I saw Oppenheimer on Saturday at an art house theater where they did a 35mm screening (it gave the film a more old school vibe) and Barbie at the regal the next day. I wanna see Oppenheimer again in imax.
Spot ON about the last 3rd and final line
I did Barbenheimer in one day and whilst long, it's not impossible. Personally for me though, I preferred Oppenheimer and I'd go as far as to say it's a horror movie without being a horror movie. What jarred me is when they're celebrating after the trinity test and that essentially they're celebrating over death. I like what was done with the explosion as well, I think it is meant to be kinda "is that it?" before you're blasted with noise. Surprisingly, I understood the science but not so much the politics and I swear if RDJ doesn't get at least nominated for best supporting actor, I'm gonna riot
You nailed it. I will probably never watch this movie again because it hurt so much. Every character and moment was so well realized... It was so wonderfully and horrifically done. I cried spiritually and teared up at a couple parts. The way it made you feel without showing, and forced you to empathize in various ways... It was masterful.

Fucking kickass movie, didn't see a single trailer so I wasn't expecting Robert Downey Jr. to be in it. A very pleasent surprise and an amazing performance not only from him, but from almost everyone else as well

Great movie!! Wished Richard Fyneman had a bigger part (the man playing the bongos). He would of added some much needed comedy to a very serious movie. Nolan could of added his shinanigans where he was cracking all the safes on the Los Alimos base just because he was bored.

I was aware of the length after the bomb scene, but I still enjoyed the last third, even more than the first! And I completely agree, as I was talking about it with my sister, that the last hour was appropriate to drive home the moral dilemma and the drama of the person Oppenheimer, because it was a movie about the Man, not the Bomb. The acting in this movie is phenomenal, I totally stopped seeing the actors and started just seeing the characters they were playing and believed that they were them. I also thought the movie was going to end shortly after the bomb and kept going, and you are not the only one that thought this, for sure, and for me it was like ok why is not wrapping up and I started to notice the time. I was like ok, I was good with it until now, then it just went on and then the unexpected happened, I was getting invested into it again and the aftermath of what happened, and made me think more about it especially as the movie ended and I was driving home and into the following days, such a good movie

Gotta say, since I don’t think he’s ever talked about it in a video before, I’d be really curious to hear Doug’s general thoughts on Tenet. Given what he’s said about Nolan’s overall filmography, I think he’d probably have some interesting opinions on it, though my gut definitely tells me he’d lean mixed-negative on it
I agree with your assessment - I drifted by a bit after the 2 hour mark, but the political thriller element really drew me back in and put all the pieces together. Very clever design by Nolan and company.
I thought a lot about the Chernobyl miniseries after Oppenheimer. Especially with the structure around the court room(s). Nolan did his twisty writing with it, cool, but in the end it felt wrong.
His writing also got a few chuckles out of me, after like the seventh mentioning of the greatness and importance of Oppenheimer, creating Nolan's Holy figure type all over again .
Its so confusing, the online critics are so split on this. I wanted to see it today but I just wasn't in the mood for 3 hours of talking.
I've seen it and it is better to watch at home with a comfy pillow and blanket if you're having trouble sleeping lol
The last 1/3, are you reffering the parallel with the opening title about Prometheus and what happened to Prometheus after?
Oppenheimer is an absolutely riveting film Christopher Nolan knows how to create great drama and this is one of his best stellar performances from everyone all across the board its my candidate for best picture personally.
Above average move but definitely WAY TOO HYPED. Saw this in IMAX 70mm and honestly should have watched it on a normal theater. Picture was not as crisp as I expected. Good storyline, FANTASTIC directing and filmography, amazing cast, but not something I would be losing my shit over like the whole internet is doing saying it might be the best movie ever.
I encourage you to read more about Teller and Oppenheimer in the post-war environment. This is a missed part of the story that explains a LOT about why so many friends turned on Oppenheimer. Obviously Nolan could not include EVERYTHING from that time, but you might be interested. I recommend the book The Wizards of Armageddon if you are interested.

The part that stuck out to me when the bomb was first tested and we see the explosives but it is dead silent for five minutes and then we hear it.
That's actually accurate. Light travels faster than sound, so you would see an explosion and then hear it.
I feel like I would get more out of it the second time around- by the last third, I was struggling to follow what was going on and I was starting to get antsy because I needed to use the restroom. I think if I saw it again and knew what it was going to be like, it would hit a lot differently.
Totally agree on the editing for reaction shots. I also noticed that there is noticeable lip-flap (or lack thereof) in reverse shots. Like, we hear a character speaking but their lips aren’t moving. Really distracting on a giant screen.
Schindler’s List is still the best movie about this time period for me. But this looks pretty good.
They're polar opposites of a similar coin. One shows the horror that mankind unleashed in its most primitive form, the other is the possible terror that mankind could unleash in the modern world. I recommend you see it.
My vote would be for The Imitation Game about the cracking of the Nazi Enigma code. Similar style of movie to Oppenhemier but a lot more discipline in the editing room and way better paced imo.
I can't say I don't love Schindler's List, but for me it would be Grave of the Fireflies or Two Women, both of which, like Schindler's List, show the lives of non-combatants in "enemy" territory--the former is about two Japanese children who lived through the firebombing (by early forms of napalm bombs) of their city, and the other shows the experiences of two Italian women (a mother and her twelve year old daughter) in 1944 during the initial invasion of Italy by Allied Forces and the war crimes that were committed, specifically the mass rape (mostly committed by Moroccan forces under French command) of between 2000 (government estimate) and 60000 (victims groups estimate) women between the ages of 11 and 86, according to Wiki (12,000 appears to be the most credible). Both are fictionalizations, but are based on real events.
Schindler's List probably never going to be topped. It is much more horrific.
After the movie, I watched a couple videos on UA-cam about veterans who were present when they were testing the bombs.
