So I actually rewatched tenet recently and there’s a scene where they talk about Oppenheimer and the manhattan project. Nolan taking a note from pixar by referencing his next movie 😂

    Excellent review. Excellent movie.
Nolan really did it. There was a palpable sense of dread, anxiety and fear in my fully packed theatre as the countdown for the trinity test hit 0. It was a feeling I won’t forget. You could hear a pin drop. Truly remarkable.

Your commentary was excellent, thank you!
    Two notes about Downey....
he had many great performances before Marvel, but they were often in films that didn't have much of an audience when they were released ( referring to Wonder Boys, Fur, A Scanner Darkly, NBK...). He was frustrated.
Every big break has been a result of him bucking the Hollywood system. Attenborough lost major studio funding when he cast Downey in Chaplin, and it's well known that Marvel refused initially to hire him. Guy Ritchie didn't want him for Sherlock, but Downey hounded him.
Marvel gave him the recognition and wide audience that his talent deserves, and that higher profile has led to Oppenheimer. Hopefully he will get opportunities now to work in more high profile productions and push the boundaries of his potential.
Also, if you haven't watched Downey's doc with Chris Smith, "Sr", I highly recommend it. It's about him coming to terms with the legacy his father has left him, the art and also the addiction.
It's a beautiful tribute from a son to his father, and from one artist to another.

Going to see it again today boys, at the huge IMAX dome theater here in Charlotte. Wish I could see it in 70mm IMAX, but at a dome theater in IMAX laser definitely has to be close to the next best thing right? Lol. Also, I'm partially seeing it again just to hear Ludwig Goransson's "Can You Hear The Music." So fucking sexy and sophisticated lol.

honestly even though I don't always agree with all you guy's opinions on everything (i tend to be a lot more negative of marvel/star wars/dc stuff), you are one of the best podcasts to listen to. Whenever I see a movie, I always go and see if you've done an episode on it so I can listen to it. This with EFAP are my favourite podcasts. Keep it up, love the discussion, always insightful. I'm not in the position to be able to donate but I would if I could.

How are the black and white scenes not influenced by opinion and emotion if Strauss had a petty feud with Oppenheimer that was so bad he thought a conversation about the fate of the world was about him?

Seeing your review so late on at the beginning of the year makes me wish to having seen this in theatres when it came out. Ofcourse I've seen the movie just recently a few days ago as we are fully in award season, and i have to agree its may well be his best film to date given that all the skills he has been building up to this might have been perfected in this Picture. And i agree with you that its the best film I've seen since Parasite. Thanks guys for the review. 👍

My great uncle John Grebe was a German scientist who worked at Dow Chemical and invented styrofoam there. During Trinity he was brought on in the Washington unit and was in Los Alamos for the bomb test. My G-ma says he was in TIME too, but obviously not on the cover like Oppenheimer. That was a big flex while watching the film with my friends. 😅

Re Kitty Oppenheimer ..I was a real career girl (ballet dancer) and my one baby cried 10 hours a day....years ago ..he should have been wrapped etc etc.. I know exactly how she felt! Locked inside 4 walls as a carer 24 hours a day 😢😊
Being a mother for me, was the hardest thing i ever did!

Guys, great episode as always. But am I the only one that noticed that the black & white and color perspectives are not exactly objective and subjective? Hear me out, its actually a tale of competing narratives - the story of Oppenheimer vs Strauss. You could see this by the end that Strauss is breaking down and telling all of his qualms about Oppenheimer and all of it are basically false and his personal biases. All of the black & white scenes zooms in on only Strauss' character. From the trial, to the roundtable scene, and the break room scene. Its subtle but its there. And judging that Nolan has.a habit of putting twists in his movies, it can also be a red herring to audiences to keep them on their feet.

Interstellar is still by far my favorite Nolan movie and I'll explain why. Not going to say Oppenheimer wasn't well made and well written, but I guess I just miss when films where about hope and heroism...his interstellar has the most of this ..escapism.. nowadays it's always about the villain being more humanized and the hero being more scrutinized .. maybe this trend will change but it's a very 'what's the point' outlook which I already have in life. I need escapism and just plain fun.. interstellar had the most of both fun escapism, drama and hope for humanity with it's amazing everything else in film making..films like the old Indiana Jones trilogy, lucas star wars, princess bride, army of darkness!! I understand it's different times, tones and genres entirely but,.. where did we stop having more fun with film??!! Oppenheimer is well crafted and tried to have heart, but also very forgettable with it's very deep characters and not something I want to watch again.. probably ever. I think of better films based on history I'd rather watch over and again like 'there will be blood', 'gangs of new york' even 'catch me if you can' or 'the aviator'. Oppenheimer does though have an important topic and should be exploited and in our history but definitely no joy in the world of cinema and for obvious reasons. Not something I'll revisit and it's not because of the execution but like I said.. can we please get a little back to smartly written cinema that still has a soul, charisma and very creative, memorable moments to it??!! Thanks for reading my review. 6.5 of 10 for the important message, acting and production.

I love you guys and I watched the video all the way to the end, but I think you have serious recency bias. It felt like you weren't talking about the actual movie we got, but the movie we all wanted. I think after the hype settles, we'll look back on this movie that should have been great but wasn't. I feel like this video gives more insight to the Manhattan project than the movie itself. I love Christopher Nolan, I was sure that I was gonna like this movie no matter what, but honestly, I can't say it was such a genius and so well put together movie as a lot of people say. I kinda liked the middle of it, but even that felt rushed. I wanna love this movie, but I couldn't say it delivered on the points you mentioned. The acting is brilliant though ;) Keep up the good videos. Have a nice day, guys.

Sorry - but I don't see Oppenheimer getting nominated for VFX at the Oscars, let alone winning. Tenet had a VFX team of over 300 people, while Oppenheimer has less than 20. The branch is not going to be as on-board with a movie with so many practical effects, hence why they snubbed The Shape of Water and Dunkirk (another Nolan movie). As long as Dune Part II is released in 2023, it will absolutely be winning Best VFX.
