My wife and I are booked on a 15-day Hawaiian cruise with Princess in October, so for the past year or so, I've been checking out videos on Princes cruising. Thanks for the insight. Good reviews and I agree with some. I am a Diamond+ member on Royal and used to sail with Royal a lot, but after our first cruise with the Majestic Princess, that changed. We have then booked 4 cruises on Princess. Unlike you, I like the pastries on Princess more than on Royal and there are more selections on Princess. According to many, the service that you have experienced on Princess is fleet wise, not just on the Majestic Princess. It isn't fair to compare a standard cruise line (Royal) vs a premium cruise line (Princess). Maybe now, you can cruise with Celebrity and Holland America and compare them to Princess since they are all premium cruise lines.
we’ve had several comments about the fact that it isn’t an apples to oranges comparison, and that’s completely fair. However I think those details, while very well known within the cruise community (people who cruise frequently and/or as their primary means of travel and vacation), for the vast majority of travelers a cruise is a cruise is a cruise. for us and many people we know, we choose a destination, see what’s in our budget, and that’s what we book if the options look good. (though in fairness, we didn’t book the Royal Caribbean cruise. Stephen was working on that one.) Knowing the difference now, we would definitely make the distinction in the video, so that others who don’t cruise often know.

@@NLMusique we actually don’t cruise often! that’s the thing. we’ve been on exactly 2 cruises and decided to compare the two, not knowing until the comments were made that they were in different classes of ship and cruise line. we’re definitely newbies to this whole cruising thing and probably won’t be traveling via cruise a ton. we clearly have a lot to learn! 😅
I would love to see an update to this after you have been on a few more cruises with both lines. Our experiences have been nearly opposite but this is our first cruise with Princess.
that’s fair. unfortunately we aren’t the biggest fans of cruises, tbh, except to only a couple more, specific destinations. we’d love to do one through the Panama Canal and definitely would like to go to Antarctica. So unfortunately a few more on each line (or any line for that matter) is probably not on the agenda for us. Then again, you never know what opportunities may present themselves, so I won’t say it’s a hard no. ☺️
I agree. I was on Mariner Oct 8 - 8 (less than two weeks ago) and I kept getting a whiff of sewer. And, our bathroom sink obviously had stuff in the pipe causing a nasty smell when we ran the water. Our stateroom was roomy though and the food, for the most part, was good. Especially the steakhouse and teppanyaki. Usually Princess is thought to have good food but each ship and sailing is different. My least favorite part of Mariner was coming home to discover I got covid while on the ship. Isolating and medicating at home right now. Gives me a chance to binge your videos though!
I love the review! I have always wanted to see a good Royal Caribbean vs Princess comparison. I know that Royal is a floating theme park and Princess is more traditional. However, food, service and cleanliness can always be compared!
So here’s a comment about travel and dining and customer service in general these days. Because of how busy every place is (European travel right now is off the hook!!!) … and the staff shortages that exist everywhere, customer service in general is rough! As we have been traveling around, I have checked guest reviews for hotels and restaurants, etc. Recently there are just so many complaints about long wait times, overworked staff, and poor attitudes. I think it is a reflection of this moment in time.
Comparing Mariner to Majestic is not a fair comparison I've worked on both Mariner 2003 Majestic 2017 Compare Mariner with Caribbean almost same age.... hands off Royal, Compare a ship like Spectrum or Ovation to Majestic.

Thank you! We try to be aware of situations and perspectives, but at the end of the day, for what cruises are and what they cost, certain things like hygiene and service are deal breakers for us, no matter the circumstances.
Such a great comparison, it's interesting to watch as someone who hasn't been on a cruise ship before, although either one would be wonderful hehe. The street they made throughout the main part of the ship is actually epic, so cool!! Loved watching! Thanks for sharing you two!
I agree they did a nice job with the theme-like environment! But I was really missing views of the outside water while I enjoyed my food and/or drinks in those spots. The amazing horizon is easily the greatest asset a cruise has going for it, and it seemed like such a lost opportunity.
That was fun! We have only been on Carnival (4 times) and enjoyed it a lot each time. This was fun to compare 2 new lines to us. Thanks guys! Happy July 4th!!!

Seemed like a mixed bag there but good to see the side by side. In general it's probably best to assume the included food will not be amazing; one of those quality vs. quantity things. We're with you on Customer service; that needs to be top notch for a cruise or resort. Definitely a hard job, but it makes such a huge difference in the customer's experience. Being able to order food via the app and have it delivered anywhere on the ship is a boss move!
we should have had lower expectations for the food in both cases, but before our first cruise we kept hearing how amazing the food can be on cruises. I think it’s a combination of taste (ours just being different) and also many people love the quantity of food and choices. We heard people talk about how they can have as many entrees as they want, like that’s what made it good. You’re completely right about quality vs. quantity in more than one way!

I caught myself strongly agreeing on some stuff (like the cakes being kind of a weird consistency on Princess - still trying to figure out if they were like flourless or something), to strongly disagreeing on other stuff (had the exact opposite customer service experience). Thankfully I haven't run into the "smell" issue on either Princess or RCL - however I did have it on Carnival so I can totally relate and yea...pretty much a deal breaker for me..no more Carnival unless it's a different ship. Rock on!!

If you go, pick one that goes somewhere like Alaska or the North Pole (from Norway, I think?), or maybe through the Panama Canal. Those seem like the most interesting to us.
Was this a chartered cruise on Mariner? And Princess was a regular cruise? Age of ships? Amount of passengers? All of these should factor in. Your pastries was spot on. The medallion worked good in Alaska but on our transatlantic it was non existent.
yes, as we mentioned near the end, this is The 80s Cruise, and definitely not your typical cruisers. Which may be why some of the service was a bit off. The Princess cruise was a regular cruise. We did also address the number of passengers on each as factors. But she would certainly account for the condition of the rooms and definitely something we’ll consider/add in the future.
Super interested in finding this review as we have a trip with Royal Caribbean next year! We have been on Carnival before and might have to book a Princess one too to experience some of the big brands! 😀
I took my first cruise on Norwegian and I felt like they had totally top-tier service, similar to what you described with Princess, but at a price similar to Royal
I am so sick of cruisers using the term "dated". As long as a ship is well cared for and functional, and the decor looks elegant, then who cares what era it's from?
Wow I forget how these cruises are pretty much small cities it's so impressive. We can relate to the smells here in Mexico. Some homes have old plumbing and they smell bad at times or riding a bus and you end up close to the bathroom, that's the worst. We find it a little strange to have that smell for a cruise since they can be expensive but hey it happens i guess.
Yuck. We were recently in NYC and reminded how much it smells like pee in the summer. You'd think we'd be better at managing our waste by now in modern society. 🤣
Fun comparison :) To be fair though. There's often more difference between ships on a single cruise line than if you compared similar class ships across lines. The Mariner is 19 years old compared to the Majestic being 5 years old too. Have sailed Princess a few times but not RCI yet - but have two booked for 2023! I think we can all agree that being on holidays beats NOT being on holidays, no matter the location/ship/hotel :D :D
-you made an unfair compairson. Royal is a Not a luxury cruise line, Princess is. A true test would be to try Celebrity Cruise Line. Then you would have Apples to Apples, not to sour grapes. By the way we cruise Royal and Celebrity. Have been Mariner is part of the voyager class.
The princess medallion app only works if you have good wifi, we did a 7day norweigan fjords cruise and the whole time it didnt work so i wouldnt have given them any points for that on princess bases on our experience

Because I LOVE to overeat on a cruise (is there anything else to do?), I really appreciate food reviews. LOL, though I'm completely aware that everyone else's palates are different from mine (I love sweet, sweet drinks, and salty/spicy foods), I truly enjoy watching people sample and give honest comments! Great job!
@@StephenandAndie Mexican Riviera, which is the original Love Boat itinerary. We've been there many times because of our relocation to the West Coast, and I love simply being able to drive right to the cruise port, instead of jumping on a plane.
You are comparing old with fairly new. And not the same class Princess is carnivals fancier ship like Celebrity is Royals fancier class ships. try a celebrity ship of the same year or the royal quantum class ships and make another video. Good video but 🍎 to 🍊
Early October 2022, cruised this Caribbean Princess ...Not Up to Princess Quality. Buffet food was good quality, fresh but not inspiring and highly repetitive. Steak, roast beef are not offered but once in 10 days. Menu is uninspiring and reflects budget cut backs. Free swirled ice cream on pool deck was disgusting/uneatable.. Poor communication about disembarkation deck/door in ports. On lobster night, unless you dress for formal sit down, no lobster. I was disappointed. Not up to the Princess quality I paid for.
I totally get what you mean about Princess setting a standard and not meeting it in certain aspects. It doesn't make you an entitled traveler at all, I mean, if THEY'VE set the standard, you're totally allowed to be disappointed when they don't meet it. Of course that's just my opinion as someone who watches all your cruise content and has never been on one myself hahaha.
If we're being totally honest, you're not missing much. 😂 Our Ecuador series, which we're about to start posting, was so much more rewarding and interesting (and adventurous!) and cost less than a cruise would cost. Also lasted twice as long. There are definitely better ways to spend one's travel money. But since Stephen got paid to be on this particular cruise, who are we to say no? 🤘🏼 If you do go on one, though, we highly recommend Alaska! That's a place worth seeing by ship, especially if it cruises through Glacier Bay National Park.

We were on Majestic. For the most part, the food was pretty good. The most surprising however was all of the baked goods. They were consistently a little dry throughout the cruise. Didn’t stop our sweet teeth from trying again the next day, though. 😜
great question. I don’t remember the exact t details now, but it was an older ship that had been revamped more recently. I just don’t know how recently.

Just got off the independence of the seas public bathroom smelled bad as well and my cabin bathroom stopped working twice on a 4 day cruise

I've sailed on both and Princess has the Medallion technology is the only thing they have on RCCL.

Love a comparison as I’ve heard the various companies are really different.
and yet also really similar/generic. it really just comes down to details and the people (both staff and fellow cruisers) for us.
Buffet on Royal Princess was very disappointing. Which Princess ship did you go on?
We were on Majestic. For the most part, the food was pretty good. The most surprising however was all of the baked goods. They were consistently a little dry throughout the cruise. Didn’t stop our sweet teeth from trying again the next day, though. 😜

Was the Royal Caribbean ship old? You said the Princess ship was 2 years old.
great question. I don’t remember the exact t details now, but it was an older ship that had been revamped more recently. I just don’t know how recently.
