Hi Greg i find your videos very informative, q. ... it is usual practise to put the toilet cassette access on the outside of the van, but i can see that body shape - mouldings might make this difficult , internal access would be a lot easer. Do i assume that you do not get any toilet smell with this installation?

Greetings from Colorful Colorado. I've had to completely rebuild the aft 3 feet of a conventional travel trailer (bath/shower area) due to roof leak water damage, and I've done two cargo trailer conversions to campers. When I need to glue a piece of material to a wall, as in your shower build, I have found a pressure sensitive adhesive works well. You trowel the material onto the solid surface, (using a fine tooth trowel, 3/8 max) let it get tacky (the longer it air dries, the stickier it gets) then simply press your surface material into place. I'm not familiar with the adhesive you were using, and it might be great...but when you trowel on the pressure sensitive adhesive there are no air gaps, and it's not ever going anywhere. Warning, when you start to apply your cover sheet, make sure everything is lined up, because once you start to adhere it, it's like contact cement and is very difficult to adjust.

Hello from London Canada, excellent video and tips throughout. I'm still in the head to paper planning stage of my shower build for my Ram Promaster 3500 extended high roof. It's not as easy as many think to accomplish a well built functional DIY van build however you have taken a taunting task and somehow made it a much easier project with less stress and pitfalls. Thank you Robert in Canada

@@RustyCas999 My van build has been a work in progress, expensive non-budget friendly project. It has also been coupled with huge life altering events. Unlike a lot of people who have documented their progress from start to finish I started with still images but soon left that behind in favour of doing a completed video and explanation. I will say that no two DIY van conversions will be the same. When my van is completed there will be no other like it. Just the same as Greg's Sprinter build it's totally unique and took hours of work in completion. At this very point due to a family medical problem my van is about 75% completed, I need to finish it but doubt I'll ever use it for its intended purpose.

Really helpful video as always. Once you have drilled the holes for the shower waste, sink waste and any of the water pipes, how do you seal them? I have been trying to figure it out but can't seem to find any videos on it and was wondering if it was just a case of filling it with silicon after the pipe is in or if there's something else you can get. Any advice would be helpful!

At 6:53 - what is the grey paint on that surface, flecked with dots? Some kind of epoxy paint? Looks great by the way.
9:04 - that tiny detail of sloping the lip of the tray is astounding! I would have never thought of that. Your brain must be mulling these details over while you sleep. How do I make my brain more like yours?

Hello 😇, the grey floor finish is Altro and we covered the whole floor before fitting any furniture. See this video for full details ua-cam.com/video/ZsQjSd1625I/v-deo.html
Re the tray, I can let you into a secret. I put a square bit of wood in first and there was a gap so that led me to think it must be designed with a slope in mind. Good idea though 😎
Teaching is an admirable profession but the pay here is very poor. That’s typical of these type of jobs. Very rewarding on another level.

A proper home has a toilet and shower. A lot of builds don't have this, even my little campervan has a toilet and shower and I'd miss it if it wasn't there. A shower inside is not so important in really hot climates but why not fit one anyway if building a toilet cubicle, even if a bucket of water and battery operated shower head can be used in it to save expense if it's out of one's budget.
I see people have portaloos under seats and hidden in small cupboards but privacy is important I think plus the fact it won't feel like you're sh**ing or pi**ing in your kitchen lol, but seriously.
Can't wait until van tour vid!!!

Hello Ian, cut a hole just slightly largr than your drop out vent or pipe etc, file any rough edges off of the cut edge, paint with hammerite to seal the raw metal edges.
Place your pipe or drop out vent inthe hole and seal all around the top and underside with sikaflex 512. After it had cured I did spray the underside with waxoyl but that was only for added protection.

Hi Greg, we are doing our van conversion and following your videos as best possible. Thank you for being so thorough! It really helps. We were just wondering what water heating system you have used for the shower? We have seen some Whale under vehicle water heaters but they are REALLY expensive. Any advice on what you used as some people are sharing heating systems which aren't safe for van use. Thanks in advance.

I see you used PVC sheeting to line inside the shower. I was thinking of using white Alupanel (aluminium composite panels, two sheets of aluminium with epoxy compound/foam between the two layers 3mm thick. Any feedback using aluminium sign panel over PVC sheeting. I was hoping of curing the aluminium panelling to the shape of my roof bus (toyota coaster) and direct sticking to the bus frame.
My only other thought is in regards to fitting panels together. You did great tight joins between the vertical panels, however I was thinking that a larger gap might be better. My experience comes from the pain of having a fibre cement sheet flat roof with tiles on it once laid by a builder that abutted the sheets directly next to each other with sealant in-between. The manufacture recommended a 10mm gap between the sheets to be filled by sealant to give enough roof for thermal expansion. As you could imagine any movement say 1mm flex in the van with a small gap of 1mm would be 200% elongation required for the sealant. If you left a larger gap and pushed sealant into the gap say 5mm any movement would be better accommodated by the sealant's /adhesives elongation properties.

Hi mate. Plumber by trade. An angle grinder with a porcelain tile blade cuts stuff like that sheeting quick and clean. Doesn’t throw the sheet about or risk damaging 👍👍👍

Also when you fixed king span to roof why could you not get he fit 10 mm less and then run expanding foam in gap this would also stick it in place. But I must say this is the best build on you tube by a long way.looking forward to watch more videos regards kevin

Clair Sulley no I didn’t do a video of that because it wasn’t my best choice. So didn’t want to recommend it. I ended up putting a 12v AC fan in running off a mains transformer so I have to use my inverter. It’s not a good way of doing it and would be better if can find a 12v DC fan but not many nice ones about. Sorry that doesn’t help you much.

Hi Greg- Fabulous work - Even as an engineer and seasoned DIYer I am really enjoying your videos and picking up a lot of useful tips. Thank you! I have a question about why you decided to have the loo cassette pull out into the van rather than externally? Is it to do with the shower drain positioning versus the chasis ? or that you didnt want / couldnt suitably site and fit the required door on the outside? Many Thanks. Jon

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  5 років тому

Hello Jon, it was mainly because there is a lot of steel supports and van wall to cut out and remove to get the door to go outside and it would be halfway through the plastic trim which would have to be cut, the van side is curved and would need to be filled with tons of mastic, the list of negatives was huge. We have been in a van with a cassette inside and it seals itself when removed and with good hygiene, it was really easy to deal with and no smells at all. Easier solution all round I think.

Hi Greg, Thanks so much for doing these videos, they are so useful. Your attention to detail is Amazing. I am starting a Renault Master build in Sydney And will copy a lot of your ideas. Just a question on your shower, you did mention in your Q &A video if it was a good idea or not. Now you have used your van for a while, if you did another build would you put in a shower and toilet ?
I only just have room for one and like your design of 975 x 700 but it is a lot of space that may not get well used, when we can shower outside in Australia quite easily. Love to hear your experience so far?

Hi Greg, could you clarify something for me please. I need to purchase a shower kit (head, etc.), and i find mixed reviews and opinions whether "normal" showers would work with electric pumps or not. In theory, when the thumb lever is released the water is shut off. I read reviews that say for pumped showers where the pump is not pressure sensitive, this means the pump continues to try and pump water but without water flowing. This risks damaging the pump motor and blowing the unit. However some pumped showers are regulated by pressure - in circumstances where the water is stopped from flowing, the pump switches off. (I will be using the Shurflo pump you recommend.) let's clear this up once and for all: do we need to buy the "electric pump convertible motorhome showers" (as usual, priced way over the "normal' shower kits), or will these "traditional" showers work just fine. As I could not find link to what shower kit/head you recommend, this is the one i am considering getting:

    • @GregVirgoe

TinRobot I didn’t want to cut through the van at low level because it would have been halfway through the plastic trim and trying to weather proof it would have been difficult. We don’t have any problem with it being inside it’s perfectly sealed and always very fresh in the shower. We use the Thetford sachets and have a nice smell.
