    Thanks for sharing that. I've recently started down the same road and have been slowly assembling all the tools. You were a bit braver than I in turning your own mandrels. I worked with a local machinist to have a pair made to hold the pen body and cap, cost me $400, mostly because the guy hadn't cut 3 lead threads in ages and so took him extra time to make sure it was done correctly. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks for the tool list Bob...For some reason this video never came up until now, so it answers a lot of questions regarding these types of pens...and I think completely answers my question regarding making a fountain pen with a clear body...called a Demonstrator Pen by manufacturers...to me if you are going to use & make a fountain pen the cool part is seeing the ink LOL.
    Definitely a lot of stuff involved and a pretty in depth process to make Bespoke pens but I definitely want to do this...and I will slowly start getting the stuff I need and since I have a metal lathe I may try making some of the mandrels myself although I think you were using aluminum in the ones you have been making and the ones you bought are aluminum as well it looks like, so I can do that with my regular lathe :).
    Thanks again for the video on the tools needed, and your Bespoke pen videos are very interesting...Its all a learning process and I usually do so using scrap materials when I am not sure how something is going to work out...but you can't always do that either as the material may differ slightly from your end product...very fun series of videos.

    Great intro. I have made many kitless pens and would not recommend acrylic or wood. Alumilite is less chippy and takes a thread easily. Wood does not thread very well, especially in the finer sizes. I eventually switched to a metal lathe for more precision and accuracy. Couldn’t get a truly round hole on a wood lathe ... too much wobble in the tail stock. Once you master the section, everything else works out. Also, the metal lathe allows you to make your own mandrel. Good luck, it’s very rewarding.

    Bob
    Your videos, and also the recent videos produced by Lynn Lacey, are tempting me to try my hand at kitless pens. But before jumping into the vortex, I have a question - - -
    You recently purchased a Turncrafter lathe (and I enjoyed your series of fixing the controller box). I have the 12" Turncrafter that I would want to use. But I have noticed (and there are numerous on-line posts that also mention) that one of the characteristics of Turncrafters is that the tailstock is a little loose, and can wobble from side to side until it is locked down. I know from other projects that I have done that tailstock sloppiness can cause drilling problems. It is possible to correct for the inherent sloppiness in the Turncrafter by creating an on-axis dimple in the blank, and then centering the tailstock and drill bit to that dimple.
    What has been your experience with the Turncrafter in doing kitless pens? I know that kitless translates into precision machining (which is appealing to me), but have you been able to satisfactorily overcome the inherent wobble in the Turncrafter tailstock?

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  6 років тому

      Hello Louie,
      There is sloppiness in the tail stock. Usually when I clean up the end of a blank the tool will leave a dimple at the center. I use a starter bit and align it with that spot then lock the TS down. I do the same when I approach with the bit. That has worked well for me and I am drilling straight holes.
      Regards,
      Bob

    Custom tenon tool - sharpen the short end of a cheap end wrench. Turn it close, then use the wrench, sharpened leg up. It'll act like a skew doing a planing cut & when it reaches the size, it'll slip forward and stop cutting. Get a whole set at HF or Menards for under $10. =)

    Kitless sounds really exciting. As I think about it, however, without a kit, where do you get the transmissions, tubes, clips, etc.? I'll be watching you :>)

    Hi, what Lathe are you using or what do you recommend to turn fountain pens?

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  4 роки тому

      Any lathe will work as long as it has very little play in the bearings and good alignment between the head and tail stock.

    This! I want to do this. I've been reading that can attempt to cut threads with course tap/dies just to learn the ropes. Do you recommend learning this way? I don't know what I don't know so I'm coming into this blind. I am leary of buying specialized tools before I have a pretty good idea that I can or will continue down this road. What are your thoughts? Most of the woodworking (I'm being liberal with that term as I mostly tinker) I have learned with videos or trial and error. This seems a tad expensive to go off half cocked. So any advise is greatly appreciated.
    Joshua

      Hello Joshua,
      This is an expensive endeavor. I think using course taps and dyes is a great way to learn. You will also get lots of ideas for other pens.

      @@RJBWoodTurner Good morning, just wondering out loud about something. What would possibility be to insert a metal band near section and one near end of barrel then placing magnet in cap? I'm guessing probably could happen with a little imagination. Maybe would eliminate need for as many thread cuttings. Anyway, just a thought. Any ideas?

    Bob, I know this video is a bit old and I'm going to be watching your other kitless pen videos but do you still hold these tap and die sizes are the ideal ones to start with? I'm getting ready to purchase and want a perspective before hand.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  3 роки тому

      Honestly,
      I spoke to a kit less pen maker and purchased exactly what he recommended. If I knew then what I know now, I would have purchased single start tap and dies to start out. Not a big deal when your starting out.
      You can always add the triple start when you perfect your pen making.
      Here’s my tool list:
      drive.google.com/file/d/1hn5NwMEyKY8RsDuvUk67lnjb54O-sSGA/view?usp=drivesdk
      I also would have started with Parker style pens and waited to purchase the Jowo tap, it’s pricy.
      You can even make your own mandrel with brass and a carbide tool.
      I hope this helps.
      Regards,
      Bob

    I notice in your tool list you purchased an extra larger tap holder and extra larger die holder for the sliding tap/die tool. With the 2 each tap and die holders that come with the tool, that means you have 3 each of different sizes of tap and die holders. Just wondering if in the process of making the kitless pen, you actually use all 3 sizes of each tap and each die holder? (Just wondering if all are necessary and if I can cut costs by reducing some of the pieces of kit :) )

      I haven’t yet, it was recommended that I purchase them for future use. My hope it to turn a few more pens and do a sort of Bespoke on a budget video of the bare necessities. Being new to the hobby, I had to rely on what others were telling me because I didn’t know.
