    This was a huge inspiration back then. I was making music with protracker afterwards. So many nice memories. Still into making music and even working in a music software company now. The spirit of music from the demo scene and amiga games like turrican will never die, at least for me personally. cheers for the upload

      Amiga was the home pc of the mid to late 80s so its about which generation you belong to. There was a scene for pc too but more of generic mp3 music

      @@quadpad_music Not hating but this has little to do with videogames or the nes (both of which I love). This is about a simpler time, when music wasn't just some unoriginal preset beat layered with crap autotuned mumblerap dropout lyrics. When production was actually taxing on the hardware and you didn't have 16gb laying around for samples. It's nice that we have easy access to complete retro librairies. But it's nicer to have to find firsthand that special game that nobody knows about. Having to figure out on your own how to beat it because the internet wasn't there. Being called via landline to help a friend out with a particular game because you've developed skill and noteriety in the field at 9 years old, and biking long distances to help out. Literally hacking your way to boss fights that made you improvise on the spot to beat them on the first try, or not. When music had movements, meanings, solos... actual fn music and some were in videogames. They set the mood. The graphics were what they were and I think somehow it was a good thing; having your imagination set on fire by a couple of pixels with triolets and sinewave arpeggios. The kids don't know and thinking you do is why it is said that they have no idea and possibly never will. Different times.

      Sounds like a sampled analogue synth playing two sawtooth oscillators, one stacked an octave above the other, with subtle detuning (possibly unison) and envelope filtering. 'Euro-bass' is a popular name for these particular types of sounds on ROMplers (sample playback synthesisers/workstations).

    • @feralferret
      @feralferret 3 роки тому +1

      864kb in total, so yes it fit on a standard Amiga 880kb floppy disk. 1440kb was used for PCs, not Amiga. I believe there were 1.7mb floppies for Amiga but they were very rare, and I think you'd need a separate, external floppy disk drive, not the standard drive. But Music Dream used the regular 880kb floppy.

      Hello!
      But if it's like this, how does it most of the time show more than 4 at once? Is it just because the bars still go down slowly, after the sample already has been cancelled by another one on the same channel?
      Edit:
      Just had a look again, seems like the bars fading out slowly after the sample already stopped playing is the reason! Thank you :)

    I think in fairness to most Amiga demoscene music, it's mostly a little crass. There's some great examples of very good music to be found no doubt but so much sounds like where it came from. There's a certain charm to it of course but I think if people are honest, a lot of it hasn't aged very well in that same way 99% of pop music also is fairly throwaway because the people writing it were mostly not professional. Sounds like I'm shitting on it but I do love the Amiga and have a fondness for the time such is my constant use of the Amiga 1200. But objectively speaking it's not great music most of the time from the demoscene. Somewhat passable in a cheesy way but not great most of the time

    Why is it amiga composers always used those horrible hi pitched toy keyboard lead sounds, the worst one ever is that flute sound with a pitch bend I mean who in their right mind thinks a flute sounds good played 2 octaves too high and then pitchbent to fuck. I'm guessing these sounds came with octamed or something like that because every Amiga mod had them, funbass, strings1, peck, pizza, flute, popsnare2, they all sounded like shit. Of course there were some great amiga composers out there that used really nice samples but it was so hard to find their songs back in the day, 9 times out of 10 anything you downloaded from a BBS was a toy keyboard song with all those shitty samples ripped from popcorn.mod. I KNOW I'm not the only person who thought this!

      Don't forget the Amiga had massive hardware limitations in terms of studio sound... Audio playback for most of the Amiga masses had to be loaded using 880kb floppy disks (total sample storage for all samples [ignoring chip-tunes which weren't mainly reliant on samples], but this space for samples was considerably less if other data had to be placed on the floppy disk, like game programming, libs, bitmap graphics, etc.) often meaning that multi-sampling and velocity sampling that are commonplace today were completely out of the question back then, so rough loop-points and crude transposition across the whole key-range had to be used. Despite these limitations, I'm still marvelled at how great much of the Amiga music was.

    • @no9or9
      @no9or9 6 років тому

      Those "Amiga composers" was mostly self taught amateurs, who just wanted to have fun making something on their computers. Something more than playing games. Looking from an 8-bit computers music perspective even those 'toyish' sounds in Amiga tunes was huge leap in computer music quality. Listening to something else than just simple waveforms was completely different experience than listening to it today.
      Anyway - I don't like this music disk at all. Tunes are to repetitive. "Music Dream II" is one of my all time faves.
