Awesome job promoting this. I played it shortly after release, and its a modern masterpiece. Pays homage to the classic 90s FPS games while still standing on its own. The atmosphere, guns/enemies, music, and especially level design are top notch. As I got into ep2 and ep3, some of the levels were jaw dropping to me. Cannot recommend this game enough.

You made me a huge Newblood fan when you uploaded this and the only reason I'm not playing Dusk for the 30th time is because I wanna forget how great it is so I can rediscover it
great game, last time i played it i finished episode 1 on duskmare intruder, many deaths later it was satisfying to finish it. for those who don't know duskmare is the highest difficulty where everything 1 shots you, and intruder mode makes you start each level with only the sickles another thing that wasn't mentioned in the video is that the sickles can reflect enemy projectiles if you time your swings right which is just fun to do
Yeah, none of the weapon in the game are bad, everything has a purpose. Even the basic pistols have a purpose, they can kill low HP enemies pretty quickly, saving your stronger ammo for bigger threats. One of my favorite challenges is to play Erebus Reactor using nothing but sickles and environmental objects. Never been able to complete it, because killing cowgirls w/o a riveter is a pain. But it's really fun to do anyways.
Celestia bless your souls for pointing me in the right direction in FPS. UT2004 was my first massively overplayed FPS, than Doom 2016, than I suddenly realized "I want to feel what veteran gamers felt in the 90's". CS 1.6, Quake, Doom 1993 and Doom 64 followed. Now people have pointed me to the direction of Blood and Dusk.
So the game is pretty cool but what really got me into the video was that old school "gameplay" at the end, pretty cool man. You reminded me when I used to search for UA-cam compilations of COD mw2 kills with throwing knife.
Hi new to your channel but have been watching all your stuff. I really appreciate your straight-forward style. So much content on UA-cam emphasizes style over substance, that I actually tend to skip to the middle of a lot of videos just to see what the actual point of the whole thing is. Your videos don’t waste the viewer’s time and every word and second matter. Even when I don’t totally agree with you (like say with God or War 4, I love all the original games but I also really enjoyed what the new game was going for) your conciseness is a breath of fresh and if we applied a value per second metric, your channel would have the “best bang for your buck” rating.
Loved how the review left me wanting more, then you unexpectedly jumped into one of your favorite levels to give us an actual taste of the gameplay, atmosphere etc. Probably the coolest review format I've ever seen, and never seen.
@@armondo4446 Oh yeah, it is a fantastic game. It just didn't 'click' with me. I will say though that the level design is top notch. Everything looks so absolutely gorgeous. I played through the game just to take a ton of screenshots to use as wallpapers.
Dusk holds a special place in my heart, it was the first game in the "doom-like" genre of games, and the level you showed gameplay of was the first level that I really stuggled in. I came up with strategies, and found a bit of tech, like you can jump off of the fire spewing pillar, bunny hopping, and you can jump over the wall to go to the main facility. I love Dusk and can reccomend it, I cant think of anything more to say about it, I just love it so much

6:07 - by the way, this game has prop jumping. You can stand on top of a prop and press 'jump' and 'use' repeatedly, so you will jump, lift it in the air and jump of it again.
This game is a great example of how I believe that horror should be used; primarily as an undertone that sits quietly in the background until the fighting stops and you realize how creepy the setting actually is or something spooky happens like the one teleporter in the lab level or the first encounter with the wendigos. It's like eating a cinnamon raisin bagel versus shoving a handful of raisins into your mouth.. You can always taste a bit of the raisins, and the occasional raisin you bite into is amplified by the lower amount of flavor in the rest of the bagel.
IDK if I’m the first one to find this, but there’s a little Easter egg in the second level. If you jump the last gate before it transitions to the third level, you will find a health cross with a label that says “you aren’t supposed to be here, go away.”
This video was really good, but I gotta say Civvie 11 really got me into these older style games a while ago. His series on shadow warriors, blood, dusk, and new doom are some of the best videos I have ever seen on youtube. If you haven't seen them, I recommend giving him a few hours of your time.
great analysis. i think you sold me on the game. i've been playing their other shooter AMID EVIl and it's great. it feels less quake/ blood and more serious sam/ hexen but that's not a complaint at all. really open, complex levels with tons of variety, interesting magic weapons and a fun mechanic where you can power up your weapons to do absurd things for a brief time (ricochet projectiles off walls, turn enemies into water, throw suns)
I bought Dusk when it first released and played through episode 1, but couldn't get more than 2 levels into episode 2 because I was so bad at it. Just a few weeks ago, having played retro-style FPS games fairly regularly for the past year, I decided to give Dusk another try, and this time I was able to complete the game on the medium difficulty. And I have to say, it's honestly one of the best FPSs I've ever played. It just feels good to play on a fundamental level; I often found myself strafe-jumping in circles around rooms after I'd cleared them out just because even the basic act of moving from one place to another in this game is incredibly fun. Not to mention, the game looks absolutely beautiful, especially with limited colour palette and 4x pixelation enabled.
Found your channel due to your love of doom eternal. You are making me want to get a PC dude. I haven't had one since like the 90s lol. I have been on laptops since. Yes that means i'm playing doom eternal on console
Sold. What really sells it to me is lack of some modern elements like open arenas, bullet sponge enemies, enemies coughing with powerups and well, everything about Doom 2016 that makes me play Brutal Doom instead. It really looks oldschool and it's in a good way.
I'd recommend grabbing the bundle that includes this and Amid Evil, which is very similar to Dusk but leans hard into being a throwback to Heretic and Hexen.
I hope that if they work on a Dusk sequel, they add some crazier weapons in the mix. Many 90's games had the usual roster of pistol shotguns, rifles/machine guns, rocket launchers, but the highest tier weapons were reserved for some cool weapons, like the plasma rifle and BFG from Doom; the thunderbolt, hyperblaster and rail gun from Quake 1 and 2; the Gauss Gun (which acts like Dusk's Crossbow) and Gluon Cannon from Half-Like... weapons that had limited ammo but could tear a new one for higher tier enemies and bosses. Otherwise, the game is indeed amazing, can't recommend it enough. It also feature tons of secrets and every episode has one secret level. For these secrets you have to remember that you can pickup objects and break grates (which I sometimes forget, given the old school feel of the game)...
Another good one is Hellbound: Survival Mode. I saw something about the dev making a campaign mode for the game too, but not sure when that's coming. As someone who enjoys survival modes, I really liked it. I'll also have to try this out, it looks fun.
It's also worth noting that the game has an SDK (that's still in beta right now iirc) that means you will have plenty of community-generated content for years to come as well as the tools to create your own! My main criticism of the modern DOOM games is that they break the id tradition of moddability, but the devs say they're working on bringing the engine up to par with the moddability level of previous iterations, then again, many studios have claimed they have mod support "in the works" and then never actually release or say anything after that, so I'm not holding my breath. It's honestly sad how the industry at large has moved away from mods, as they were how some of the biggest names in gaming today got their start.
I hope that in the next installment of Doom they just make the In-flight mobility rune active by default. Because in 2016 and Eternal that's the one Rune that was never changed while I play.
Playing Dusk is a good way to familiarise yourself with the play style that is very much necessary in Doom Eternal. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed DE as much if I haven't learnt all those skills from playing Dusk. I would also argue that Dusk handles weapon switching and the "use all of your tools" philosophy a lot better and a lot more organically than DE does, which unlike Dusk forces you to play that way by putting absurd ammo restrictions.
@@BosSupes For those new to boomer shooters you can learn and practice a lot of mobility basics and weapon switching. I do agree that DE is sometimes too complex
I'm so glad to see late 90s and early 00s gaming aesthetics return. Something about that graphical style is super evocative. The graphics give you just enough info, leaving your imagination to fill in the rest. I vastly prefer it to photorealistic graphics.
Dusk is more quake inspired than doom inspired. Also if you want a game like Doom Eternal just play Ultrakill, it has the weapon chaining and dashes with a lot of its own style, or dread templar for more of a mix between doom and quake.
@@jmachero5852 its not in early access because its a cash-grab like many early access games, the only reason it isn't finished is because the last few levels haven't been released just play it, you won't regret it

This vid helped me find your channel and I really like it, keep up the good work on those shooter analysis-style videos! :)
Yeah man, been playing Dusk for a while now - fantastic game!
Sold. What really sells it to me is lack of some modern elements like open arenas, bullet sponge enemies, enemies coughing with powerups and well, everything about Doom 2016 that makes me play Brutal Doom instead. It really looks oldschool and it's in a good way.
I'd recommend grabbing the bundle that includes this and Amid Evil, which is very similar to Dusk but leans hard into being a throwback to Heretic and Hexen.
this game is amazing, so glad you decided to cover it
I remember this from a year ago i couldn't remember the name! Thank you.
After Dusk, New Blood made AMID EVIL which also inspired by 90s shooter and it is a MUST play for any old school FPS fan
DUSK, IS, AMAZING. The music. The movement, I MEAN U CAN DO BACKFLIPS, TRY IT, just jump and fling ur mouse up or down.
Another good one is Hellbound: Survival Mode. I saw something about the dev making a campaign mode for the game too, but not sure when that's coming. As someone who enjoys survival modes, I really liked it. I'll also have to try this out, it looks fun.
I’ve been looking for another decent FPS like this. Cheers brah, keep up the great content.
Decent?
I can argue it is one of best if not the best.
Best levels in all of gaming don't wanna spoil them
Bhagesh Kumar sweeeeet
check Amid Evil too
Agus1881 I’ve heard of that one as well but haven’t gotten around to playing it, I’m glad for doom eternal I almost forgot how FPS games were
I played this game. What I love about it is that it leaves behind the old school elements that didn’t work
I love the visual aesthetic of those early levels. It’s like a midwestern American version of the village from Resident Evil 4
@2:50
If you overlook a weapon that does a lot of damage, and shoots through walls, you can't be helped.
I'm glad games like Dusk, Ion Fury, Amid Evil and the original Doom/Quake games are back undrr the spotlight of mainstream gaming
As someone who grew up with the original Unreal and loves it to death but has never played Unreal Tournament, I'm just happy I was included at all
If you like Dusk, Amid Evil is also a great classic-styled shooter. More magical and medieval themed, but extremely satisfying all the same.
your channels about to be booming my man
Hi Mayo! I love your channel. I just finished Dusk yesterday :D So now I can come and see your review. c:
So glad you liked it! Dusk is great!
Thanks for the recommendation!
My favorite gaming commentaries are the ones where you can hear the speaker aggressively mashing the keys
The old school hooter is coming back examples dusk doom 2016, doom eternal, wolfinstien reboot, serious Sam 4, ultra kill, and quake champions.
One of my favorite things in the game is rivet jumping and crossbow jumping
Dusk is awesome
THANK YOU
I've seen this game before somewhere but i didnt know the name
Now i know and i'm about to play the shit out of this
Thanks. You should show more awesome games while we're in quarantine.
Keep up the good content~! I love just listening to your videos, you bring up a lot of good and reasonable points and your video game taste is great!
That Terminator 2 shotgun reload animation is too cool
I hope that in the next installment of Doom they just make the In-flight mobility rune active by default. Because in 2016 and Eternal that's the one Rune that was never changed while I play.
My favourite thing to do is use the blades to reflect attacks back at the hordes.
Lol no
@@BosSupes For those new to boomer shooters you can learn and practice a lot of mobility basics and weapon switching.
Hell yeah son! DUSK is amazing and the subject of what I think is still one of my best videos
‘And it can be dual-wielded for a shotgun experience that feels really unique.’
I see you’ve never heard of Marathon: Durandal
Played it back in December 2018. Loved every minute of it
Dusk looks absolutely mint. Great content, just found your channel. Subscribed!
Bunny hopping is not strafe jumping tho
Dusk is more quake inspired than doom inspired. Also if you want a game like Doom Eternal just play Ultrakill, it has the weapon chaining and dashes with a lot of its own style, or dread templar for more of a mix between doom and quake.
But that game is only released as Early Access.
@@jmachero5852 its not in early access because its a cash-grab like many early access games, the only reason it isn't finished is because the last few levels haven't been released
just play it, you won't regret it
